    #SpiderVerrse #MCU #Review
And even though art is not a competition, I think it’s the best marvel movie of the decade. In fact, I think this movie does a great job of highlighting what’s been bad about the MCU over the past few years-especially a movie like Multievre of madness. And a little later I’m going to be joined by Screencrush editor in chief and spider-man book author Matt Singer, and Screencrush’s Colton ogburn-who, by the way, has seen the Flash. And he’s going to tell us how spider-verse and flash compare to each other.
[apply cream] First, here’s my take. So every time I watch the first spider-verse movie, I am still surprised at how awesome it is. It’s a movie that’s easy to forget about, but for my money it is still the best spider-man movie ever made. And this movie doens;t fall far behind it.
The visuals of this movie are so inventive-it is so rare that you can sit in a movie-especially a superhero movie-and think, “wow I have never seen that before. And yet, this movie’s animation even surpasses the first movie. Spider-Verse 1 was a comic book brought to life, using ben-day dots, sound effects comic panels-I mean ang lee tried to use comic panels in the Hulk, but these movies actually make it work.
But in this movie, they took the concept of the multiverse and used to ask, “what does each universe feel like.” Every earth we visit has its own animation style that is unique to that world’s spider-person. So for Gwen’s, they took the comic covers by her co-creator Robbi-Rodriguez, and reimagined them into a whole world of watercolors and pastels. The softer lines give the universe a more feminine feel-and I love how the visuals are always reflecting Gwen’s emotions.
The environment brightens or darkens depending on Gwen’s mood-after all, this is her world. And just that sequence where the helicopter is going to crush her dad, and she focuses, hearing the drumbeat in her mind. It’s a great way to show the teen angst of a girl using drums to beat out her emotions-and then how she harnesses that emotion to focus and save people’s lives.
Even the brief glimpse of Renaissance Vulture made you want to visit his universe. And spider-man india is such a fun break from the other spider-heroes we;ve seen for years. We're used to seeing these people haunted by tragedy. They joke, but they’re always making a swirling pool of emotions. People say the raimi films were camp, but there's a lot of crying in those [montages, set to music].
Whereas spider-man india hasn;t had a tragedy occur in his life yet he think s being spider-man is easy, he’s handsome-and his sequence is a breath of fresh air in a pretty heavy movie. And the visuals in his world are stunning. Every frame is showing off.
The movie’s real success is that these spider-heroes never feel redundant. It’s crazy how there are so many spider-people in this movie, but they all seem to have the same core-the essence of what it means to be a spider-hero. They always get to the heart of spider-man’s story-that he is a hero who can never have his cake and eat it too.
Spider-man or woman is always defined by this push and pull between what they want and sacrifice. A life of happiness or the life of a hero. Peter 2 tries to make money wrestling, so his uncle gets shot. Peter 3 has to promise to stay away from gwen. Peter 1 has to give u p being with his friends to keep them safe.
And in this movie, Miles is struggling to balance his civilian life with his hero's lie. He can;t save New York and be a good son to his parents. His greatest fear is that his parents will reject him if he tells them the truth. Actually there’s quite a lot of queer subtext in that, now that I think about it.

As a person of color, I disagree that the multiverse story outshined the Miles Morales story. Nothing stuck with me more thn the conversation he had with his mom on the rooftop about how he’s going to go into the world and he might not be accepted and protected but remember who you are. I literally shed a tear. That conversation outshined every joke, multiverse, etc.

I think Miles being sent to universe 42 was a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment. I didn’t notice it the first time, and on second viewing, I did but it was really quick. And I think Ryan didn’t notice that 2099’s universe was actually very dystopian. The surface level is like the Jetsons but underneath looks like Blade Runner. Also 2099 is antagonist to Miles, but he’s not a “villain.” If anything, he’s an antihero. He’s trying to stop universes from collapsing

The fact that they believe Mile's and Gwen's familial bonds are ignored or overshadowed during the Spider Society sequence is baffling to me when it's the impetus for the central conflict between Miles and Miguel and ultimately the reason why Gwen decides to help Miles. We know how important Miles' parents are to him, and I think it was a very deliberate choice that the movie made when it didn't physically show or cut back to them during the lead up to, and during the spider chase sequence. Their absence helps to push Miles' isolation and reinforces the emotion of Rio's speech to Miles about looking after the "little boy" for her.
It really feels like the criticisms delivered here boil down to the movie not lining up with expectations.

i knew mentally that the movie is long, but it never actually felt like a drag. every scene was amazing and fit the narrative. if they cut anything, a sizeable chunk of the plot gets cut, it's simply a pretty massive story that required a lot of working parts to make just the first half. if you can sit thru 3 hours of titanic or avatar or lord of the rings, i think 2.5h of this is pretty acceptable. if anything, it's just more bang for your cinema ticket buck.

It’s not as much of a feel good movie ITSV was, but because of its cinematography, the execution of introducing the other main characters and their impact on this storyline, also what miles’s “spiderman” journey is, it makes it was better than the first. It is one of the best Superhero movies to date period and it is the first part of a two part story, so you should take it for what it is and like Empire Strikes Back it's sustained by the success and innovation of the first one, lays the ground for the closing act and yes is way better than anything the MCU has released since Endgame.

A utopia is just a dystopia in disguise, and I definitely assumed his world was a dystopia. I mean, look how empty it was! Also I adored the pacing, I think it being two parts really gave us the room to take the time and have those scenes that people would be begging to have gotten if they were revealed as deleted scenes. The movie, like spiderman, is itself trying to have its cake and eat it too. Also, I didn't catch which world Miles was from so I missed that he was in the wrong dimension so that build up was a genuine twist for me. I think its a fun and devastating scene. Flash seemed like the norman summertime "blockbuster" that the production companies have to throw out there every year to justify all the money the advertisers spend to get in said movie. But Spiderman: Across the Spider-verse seemed like the movie with more heart and dedication to the source material. It dealt with a lot of heavy subjects as Miles and Gwen both struggle with their parental relationships. Yes, it did throw a lot at you with all the variants of spider people but they did such a good job of keeping the main story focused on how hard it is for Miles to find his place in all this chaos. And while it may not have an ending it definitely got the audience more invested in it's characters than Flash where most people just viewed the movie to see Batman.

I think comic books work better as a cartoon than live action movie or tv series.

Look I love the MCU and I have enjoyed the Multiverse Saga but Sony with Spider-Verse has definitely done the multiverse better it's no question.

At some point the guy on the left says he didn't like that the balance was off in terms of the multiverse and Miles trying to be a good son, but my interpretation was that it's the same Spiderman on a larger scale. He is struggling to be a good son but keeps getting ripped away by his hero duties.

Colton had a terrible take. Just looking to find negatives. He was completely off base and wrong.

Its interesting how no way home was about accepting the canon with May's death and the great responsibility lesson, whereas this movie is about questioning the canon event while still keeping the lesson.
The first canon death event represents the great responsibility lesson (Peter: Uncle Ben, Gwen: Peter the friend, Miles: Uncle Aaron). While the second canon death event of the Captain represents accepting that spiderman can't always save everyone.
So No way home was about the first canon death and across the spiderverse is about the second.

1:37 Gwen's universe was beautiful!! The walls literally drip and the paint runs in the scenes with her dad. I also had just finished reading the run the comics covers were based on so every tie in to those got me hyped

As far as the animation discourse goes, why would spot remain in his animated form when he pops into the venom-verse? Is it because he is not all the way in the universe so he remains in his art style? And now that I think about it, why does the vulture remain in his animation style at the beginning of the film?

Great comments and points from Ryan. It is when the guests start complaining about how long and incomplete (a part one of two stories) the movie is you lost me.

Oh one thing! This movie fixed the weird Morbius Vulture moment.
They said that villains are being pulled into random different realities. That’s what happened to Keaton. He said it had to do with “spider-man” and he was right, it just wasn’t the Dr Strange event like we thought.

It’s funny how Sony started the trend of superhero movies with the Raimi trilogy, and then started the multiverse trend with ITSV, and in both cases the original movies are better than anything that came after imo.

I was thinking, spiderman 2099 went to a universe where he was happy but died and tried to replace his dead version. From the video he was watching and the outside environment when the case started, I think the universe the spiderman headquarters is in, isn't Miguel's original universe but the nice one he tried to live in.

Based on Ryan’s “Roger Rabbit” justification, why wasn’t the Spot human when he went to Venom’s universe.

Regarding mixing of real and cartoon characters, there is an episode of the Simpsons, where Homer moves from Simpson world to Tron world so changes rendering and then to real world and becomes 'real' although still yellow. This would support Ryan's thoughts.

I think the movie is complete. Just like in Two Towers it was about the orcs coming to Gondor and Frodo trusting Gollum, Merry and Pippin with the Ants. It finished that story the over arching story is destroying the ring and defeating Saron. Just like the over arching story of Across is defeating Spot and saving his dad. The middle story is about Miles telling the truth about who he is (which he sort of does) and figuring out why his friends never came to see him and why he wasn’t invited to join the Spider-society. All of which are done. Plus getting to know the core three (Miles, Gwen, Peter B.) a bit better. It is a complete story it just sets up stacks for the next one. That’s why it doesn’t feel complete.

Speaking of a “4-hour Epic”, Sony should definitely do a limited release where you can watch Across and Beyond back-to-back with a short intermission in between. Those tickets would get eaten up.
