Got one a 2 weeks ago. Still under 500 miles. I’m getting 17.7-18 mpg with 80% city driving. Transmission likes to keep the revs around 2k rpms. Engine sounds smooth all the way to 6700 rpm.
My 2022 Ranger likes to keep its 10sp trans around 1100 RPMs which is annoying as hell. Lugs the engine, bad for the truck and annoying to the driver. All for EPA standards.
This new engine is one of the best sounding V6's I've heard! Nice to see a manufacturer making an upgrade during the final year of a model. Thanks for sharing.

I feel that they are testing the new engine and transmission combination to make sure it's spot on reliable before dropping it in a totally new designed package. Because even if it's new, motor/transmission issues will bury it in a competitive market.
I think this is correct. After the MSOD issues with the previous generation transmission in earlier models (which was the fault of the radiator design, not the transmission) they probably want to prove this power train before the new model launches. I have a 2011 model with 155k miles and it still runs and drives great.

Andre, if anything the weight of the truck likely went down, allowing for the truck to haul more weight. Even if you compare the payloads of the Ram 1500 V6 versus the ram 1500 hemi, the V6 has higher payload capacity only because of its overall lighter weight. Thanks for the video, wish they still had the Xterra.
He showed us the payload rating of 1047 lbs. About the same as the current truck. So the truck itself got heavier. That payload is also less than 100 lbs more than the payload of a Toyota Camry. lol
hector nadal in the video, Andre is guessing the weight of the truck likely went up, because he said the payload capacity went up a bit. I’m saying that’s not always the case with payload capacities.
Because the Daimler Benz 9 speed will have better performance and MPG's. All OEMs have pressure to meet Cafe goals. And the MT probably only represented 1 percent on the old D40. Plus Nissan is cash starved and it would would cost allot to tool for the MT. Even GM dropped the MT on the 4 banger colorado. Ranger never offered it. Economically not worth the trouble.
@@HiPlains1 the DB 9speed will be (is) an unreliable overly complex piece of Teutonic rubbish. The cost of transmission rebuilds in vehicles so equipped makes them essential disposable. One dealer I spoke with said they are not rebuild-able just have to replace..10k $. We are now in the age where vehicles that cost 40/50/60 thousand dollars are essentially glorified kleenex. Blow once and scrap it. Agreed the no manual is economic decision, due to low consumer uptake. North Americans are lazy, in the UK most vehicles remain manual I understand. I doubt developing a new MT would be costly. They have a MT, bolt it on. Whats costly is re-jigging an assembly line to produce different configs of the vehicle. Agree Nissan being cash strapped they are following the least costly max profit approach to appeal to the absolutely generic consumer. Maybe this will save them, who knows. I had the old Frontier (4.0L MT) 2008 to 2014, traded for a Ram (6spd 65RE) to pull a boat. I still liked Frontier and considered getting another. I wont look at a truck with a 9 spd. Full Stop.
My 07 Frontier SE has 92,500 now, quiet, fast, RELIABLE and I still get compliments on how attractive it is. I'll buy another Frontier if this one ever wears out.
Isn't the Ranger motor a 2.3L turbo? Little engine revving the crap out of itself to make power? I'd be surprised if those engines have any longevity to them.
Deez Nuts The Ranger is pretty simple, the 2.3 revs lower and works less hard than any bigger V6. Turbo does not mean High RPM, quite the opposite. This Nissan is way past it’s sell by date.

Just bought a 2020 SV midnight 4X4. I looked at just about every other brand, and noting even came close to the Nissan for the money ! The new 3.8 liter V6 with 310 hp scorches the competition, with good gas mileage to boot ! The 9 speed transmission shifts well also. Not a bunch of frills inside, but everything you need.
The 3.8L has Direct Injection, known for carbon buildup around the intake valves, the removal of which is at least $1000. The new Toyota Tacoma's 3.5L V6, and all 2018 to present Ford F-150 engines use Dual Injection (Multi-Port and Direct), it keeps the valves clean and offers more power and mileage. I've seen them advertised as Direct injection though, probably so no question is raised about the rest of their cars that have Direct Injection.
I owned a 2015 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X, fully loaded. Great truck. My wife was diagnosed with cancer and I had to trade it because she is short and could not climb up into it. The port they installed in her left shoulder made it impossible for her to pull herself up into the truck. I miss my truck more than I ever dreamed I would. She was worth it though. Today she is cancer free and I drive a Kia Sedona mini van.
On an ancient model like this Frontier? Not sure if the engineers would go to the trouble when this body style is gone in less than a year. I think the extra weight is all from the new engine and powertrain.
For a single-take review video shot by the host alone, with no post production editing, it was very well done. Andre I agree with others in the audience who say you should see a doctor soon for a thorough evaluation. The Nissan Frontier has been my longtime favorite for it’s ruggedness, simplicity, & low price compared to the competition. I hope the new powertrain preserves those virtues.
I remember growing up in the mid 2000s and I saw one of these in black, it was a PRO-4X. I thought some day I'll buy a truck like that. Now that I can buy one, they still look exactly the same. Weird!
Saw an old man do a brake torque burnout across a dealer parking lot that way. He was pressing the gas and brake at the same time, the harder he would push the brake it would push the gas.
Looks really bad actually as you can see the big blank plastic plug where the ignition used to be. No clue why they wouldn’t just put the button there like pretty much everyone else puts it But that’s the Frontier interior for you. Everything is just odd looking (And I loved the old school Hardbody Nissans, but their style and looks have been going down ever since. Really hoping the 2021 is better)

ThomperBeThompin - there's one improvement they're yet to put on Tacos: the DUAL-INJECTED (port + direct) version of the NA-3.5L V6 already available in FWD apps, like the Camry and Avalon (+ their Lexus equivalents). That would up the ante to 305-310hp levels, like in the Colorado / Canyon (already has this FI system on their NA-3.6L high Content V6). Also brace yourselves as I believe this "Old Skool" Frontier has "the heart of Mrs. Z", as I believe Nissan will use a tuned (closer to 350hp in NA and 425-450 in T guise) version of this same 3.8L in the 380Z (N/A) and 400Z (T) rather than Infiniti's 3.0L, as I would figured before...
@@syxepop I imagine that the 3.0 would go in the new Z because it has been proven to fit in a compact space in the Q60. This engine seems to be too truck-ish and too big of a displacement to be fit in a Z in my opinion. But still seems like a great engine and I would rather have this than like a 2.0t.
@@mrl390 - it does (didn't checked before), but wonder then why the Colorado / Canyon NA-3.6L LGZ V6, which has a similar fuel injection system to the D4-S has quite a bit more output (308 vs. 278hp or close to +10%, which is significant). IMHO the majority of reviewers seem to think the Taco is TOUGHER (some people from overseas may argue for the HiLux being even tougher, but doesn't have a gas V6 in their options list, just I4 TD's) while the GM's seem MORE REFINED.
syxepop the power differences are probably attributed more to the design of the cylinder heads than the design of the fuel injection system. As for why toyota decided to use a detuned version of the 3.5 in the Tacoma’s, I’m sure they have a reason and it’s probably either related to how the power is delivered as well as longevity. Almost all automakers employ the same idea when they use a similar engine in cars vs trucks. Trucks need a flatter torque curve so they usually sacrifice some high end horsepower to achieve it. I do agree with you on the difference between the toyota and gm trucks. I actually bought a new Tacoma after years of GM trucks and I will say the Tacoma feels more like a tool compared to the more car like refinement of a Colorado or even a new Silverado. Given that the architecture of the toyota trucks is MUCH older than the GM trucks, that might play a part in that as well. I’m sure the next generation Tacoma will be much more refined as the Tacoma is going on 15 years of the same basic platform now.

manual transmissions make no sense anymore in practical vehicles for the american market. @@richardwroblewski8458 "manual transmissions make no sense any more" "The only thing manuals are good for is price, safety, overall reliability, fun..." Make up your mind. @@youtubetrollking1880 ranger is slow off the line. Can't stand the turbo lag on that motor. How would you know anything. Nothing released as far as 0 to 60 etc.
If its not dual injection, reliability will suffer for sure. Ford found out the hard way and now uses dual injection. Toyota has had it since day 1. If you keep your car more than 50 K miles, this matters. Why do I suspect Nissan is not DI, the Germans do it and get away with it, that's why.
@@blackericdenice Good Luck with that DI engine lasting as long as a port or dual injected engine. You could/should be using tier 1 (good gas) at the least. Not all people do. Diesels don't EGR much, if at all, at idle, the main culprit in carbon buildup on intake valves.

I still love the way these trucks look... And its probably the most reliable thing Nissan still makes so hopefully this new powertrain is good. I'd be interested in one of these in a few years. Thanks for sharing!
I've owned 2 Frontiers over the years, but my 2nd one (a 2017 Pro4x) had some issues, so I recently traded it on a 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-road, which I've been pretty disappointed in. It's definitely a reliable and rugged truck, but it's not refined. The transmission's ridiculous gear hunting and down shifting as well as quite heavy driveline vibrations in certain situations are all pretty annoying on a daily basis. Given the Tacoma's stellar reputation, I expected a much more refined truck overall. Even though I'm definitely keeping the Toyota long-term, I'm still curious about the next gen Frontier, just because I have so much experience with the current gen.
Still a great looking truck after all these years. My Dad had a 2003 Fronty CC Long Bed that my Bro in law still uses. Two things that will hopefully be addressed for the new model: 1) Turning Circle..! 2) a little more room in the backseat area in general.
3:17- “Best TQ number of any mid-size truck...with a gas engine” Is not an accurate statement. The Ranger has more TQ, and last I checked it has more TQ.
I’m sure Andre just overlooked this but Ranger has 310ftlb at 3000rpm, so Frontier is not torque leader And jeez Nissan, you could freshen this thing up. It looks ANCIENT
So according to TFL, this Nissan has the best torque number in it's class and because it's another new model year same old Frontier with a different engine, it's a "brand new, all new" truck. Edit: also let the young guys at TFL takeover, maybe they're good with numbers and keeping memory because Andre looks tired.
I was wondering that to. It looks an awful lot like the previous years. I was like hmm I thought the ranger had more torque. Sure enough I scroll to the comments and yup it does. Anyhow I still appreciate the look at the revamped nissan. Just maybe put a sub title fixing the miss info.
I always did like the Frontier. It has been 20 years though. My last one was a supercharged truck. Ran great but crappy fuel milage, especially when you were pushing it hard. But that roots blower sure did sound good. Thank you and be safe.
Nissan puts a new engine in their old truck: TFL “Nissan has an ALL NEW TRUCK!” Anything Toyota does :TFL: “Toyota needs to update their out of date truck, the people want it!” 😐
Also, because those two fan bases want different things. Frontier people don't like big changes. We like that we have a tried and true platform, and any major change threatened the reliability/performance we are used to. Tacoma fans (lately) want the latest and greatest gizmos and pickups have become more popular with people who don't actually use them for truck stuff.
The One Toyota has done allot of changing in the Tacoma at least interiors have more soft to the tough material and they are more modern, the frontier still has the cluster of a 2005 maxima lmao

I have the 18 inch tires on mine, averages about 1600 rpms.
How has it been for you? Any problems?
My 2022 Ranger likes to keep its 10sp trans around 1100 RPMs which is annoying as hell. Lugs the engine, bad for the truck and annoying to the driver. All for EPA standards.
This new engine is one of the best sounding V6's I've heard! Nice to see a manufacturer making an upgrade during the final year of a model. Thanks for sharing.
VQ 40 is pretty close. But better with 50 more HP. This will destroy the mid size segment. Especially with that daimler benz 9 speed.
There's nothing that really needs to be changed on the Frontier to the outside except maybe a minor front-end styling change. The interior can use an overhaul but I think updating the steering wheel would be a big help.

The thing that is crazy no a days is my 2003 Montero Limited has heated and leather interior and when It came out in 2003 MSRP on it was 38k! I was thinking the same thing. It's not in need of a refresh, it's in desperate need of a refresh..
Can't wait to see more of this truck. I love my Frontier.

A revived Xterra would do a better job at granting your wish than a redesigned Pathfinder
Absolutely totally agree
They took a great midsize three row SUV that can tow 7000 pounds and turn it into a damn minivan.
They kinda already have, take a look at the Nissan Terra, it's not sold in many markets, but it's built on the Navara chassis
yea it would be good if they made a off road version of the pathfinder, like a trim model but it's tough bc the market isnt there enough
I still have my 2000 Desert Runner with manual transmission. Running strong and an absolute gem.
im not a save the manuals guy but; why make the best engine and not pair it with the manual that has worked great for decades.
Full Stop.

He said the most torque of any midsize truck. He didn't designate turbo or naturally asperated.
He didn’t say that’s right, but it’s also true that the ford ranger is turbo and the 3.8 is not, so it does have the best torque for non turbo engines

Rigo M. There is nothing wrong with the 3.5 it gets the job done
William Vagabond honda and toyota have something to say about that my friend...
I owned a 2015 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X, fully loaded. Great truck. My wife was diagnosed with cancer and I had to trade it because she is short and could not climb up into it. Today she is cancer free and I drive a Kia Sedona mini van.
"Andrea you mention more weight, maybe Nissan made it safer by adding better protection up front or same frame but different metal's. "
On an ancient model like this Frontier? Not sure if the engineers would go to the trouble when this body style is gone in less than a year.
I think the extra weight is all from the new engine and powertrain.
Not when the new 2021 is close to being released. I think we have one more year of this design.
Weird!

Interesting placement of the push button start and hazard lights. Poor grandpa gonna light up the emergency lights and press the gas pedal 👨🏻🦳
Saw an old man do a brake torque burnout across a dealer parking lot that way. He was pressing the gas and brake at the same time, the harder he would push the brake it would push the gas.
I had the same exact thought! Like if they decided at last moment to put one just to say that it as this feature as a standard for 2020
Looks really bad actually as you can see the big blank plastic plug where the ignition used to be. No clue why they wouldn’t just put the button there like pretty much everyone else puts it
But that’s the Frontier interior for you.

They just want a capable reliable hard working dependable truck! well....they got one here!
Great update to this little truck. Now I really hope Toyota's impending updates to their trucks are going to be worth the wait.
But still seems like a great engine and I would rather have this than like a 2.0t.
syxepop The Tacoma already uses the D-4S dual injection system
That's not a storage compartment under the driver side rear seat. It's a subwoofer, on the passenger side it does have storage.

I’m sure Andre just overlooked this but Ranger has 310ftlb at 3000rpm, so Frontier is not torque leader
And jeez Nissan, you could freshen this thing up. It looks ANCIENT
monzav8 Next year it's all new.
I'd love to run my 08 king cab 6MT against this to compare how much faster the new one is.
It scorches my F150, V8 !!!
Thanks for the preview, looking forward to more with the new Frontier. :)
Nissan puts a new engine in their old truck: TFL “Nissan has an ALL NEW TRUCK!” Anything Toyota does :TFL: “Toyota needs to update their out of date truck, the people want it!” 😐
Because updating the grill and lights shouldn't make the new Toyota a New Truck.... That's what they did for 2020 from my understanding
Holy crap... this truck sounds AMAZING
I wonder if the price stays affordable or shoots up to Tacoma prices....
Going out on limb and saying it's gone up. Doesn't everything? But wait till you see the price on the redesigned 2021!!
honestly i think this is all the frontier needed! Upgrade the drivetrain and keep the cool boxy styling
Thanks for the video I still prefer my 6 Speed Manual Tacoma TRD OFFROAD. It's not fast but that's not what I bought it for.
I love when trucks keep the basic same rugged style but do small usefull upgrades over time. Just classic hardworking design but keeps up with basic tech needs.
