    I like incandescents to use for a heat source because they can be controlled by a simple light dimmer.

    Purchase an inexpensive electric heating pad for your backaches. Work just as well as those expensive pads for cheap. Probably find someone who would part with the pad they only used once. Set on a cheap timer and manually adjust to get right temp or one of those temp controllers. If you have an FSA you can purchase the pad for dual use pre-tax income. :)

    For an inexpensive heat mat: Look in thrift shops, estate sales, or ask older relatives, for a WARMING TRAY, used in the past to keep food & casseroles warm when serving.

    i understand this is doing what you want, If you wanted more even temp you could try 2 or 3 bulbs of even a higher wattage bulbs on a dimmer switch that is controlled by your controller. The dimmer will allow you to use any wattage bulbs you want and tweak it so they could switch on/off less.. Thank you very much for your idea, its just what I am looking for.
