To be fair Stearns didn't hit on everything. For example 3 players from the opening day bullpen are still around. And 2 of them are Diekman and Ottavino, who are the likeliest pieces to be replaced at the deadline. I've been way more impressed with all the mid-season moves than the offseason.
I saw the moves Sterns made with 1-2 year deals with player options was moves that the ball club was in the players hands. It was for them to prove themselves and see if they still got it. And it was a slow start, rough start. And it's definitely not easy coming off a bench to play a baseball game when you've been sitting for 1.5 hours. I remember when Sal was critiquing Severino and others as "maybe they will be good". I like moves like that which allows players to prove themselves and all players (batter wise) are really proving themselves minus 1 or 2. But in those player's defense again, playing off the bench isn't an easy task.

Yeah, it's a small sample size but with this new playoff format more of the underdogs are winning, especially in the divisional round when the division winners with byes in the wildcard round have been sitting for a week. Getting a week off in football is great, but not in baseball. In the two years of the new format I don't think any of the division winners in the NL with byes won in the divisional round. NLCS was all wildcard with Philadelphia-San Diego in '22 and Arizona-Philadelphia last year.

Again, lower seed at higher seed. Winner of that game is WC team in the next round.
