I'm Russian and knew about TL/TLauncher shenanigans way before your video. Nobody worships TLauncher like a gods, the only issue is that their VK group is literally controlled by them and they can remove any opposing opinion. Its like writing a bad review on their own site. The funny thing is most of latest comments under that post are not related in any way to the post itself, but to the game itself - like, "Why the f**** launcher uses 1.5 GB of RAM", "i got java error in *that random modpack name*, what to do to fix". The "We are Russians and god with us" is hilarious, because its kind of Russian meme.
As a Russian, i think 8:28 “God is with us!” Phrase is like a meme to me. TLauncher braindead admins were trying to call up to patriotism and etc, but every person with at least 1 braincell would laugh at that. Adequate people even making jokes with that, like “Two alcoholics are trying to catch a taxi and asked driver to get 3 onboard. Driver asked where is 3rd and alcoholics said, that they are Russians and God with us” Also, it such an irony, to radicalize every non-russian users by calling them nazis or racists. It’s like member of KKK trying to cancel others for slurs
As a Ukrainian, that part made me especially disgusted. So many Russians are just blinded by patriotism. Can you imagine your own grandma wishing you to be "freed" by the opposing country??
This reminds me of certain ruling people in your country. Thank you so much for being open minded and looking at both sides, without the need to call everyone the Na- word because they're not from the country and disagree. The whole "patriotism" thing makes people really close minded to the things others say and do. It's like one person can say everyone is a naz I because they don't support us and just do it because we're russian. It's ridiculous and really looks almost like people are brainwashed to not think anymore because otherwise they wouldn't be patriotic. Thank you again!
Calling everyone racist is a tactic that I’ve been seeing a lot more of outside the US. It was nonsense here from the very beginning, but the media and “The Party” in my country has been pushing it for many many years, and forcing it on other countries as a divide and conquer tactic. Why take over by force if you can get people to kill each other for race while spending money and voting for them without choice?
It's really hard to "take them out of business" and "turn their community against them" when you realise that more than half the users are kids whose parents didn't buy them the game and just want to play the game for free regardless of whether or not it puts a virus on their computer
@@siamofficialyt A virus can try not to break your computer and instead leave a backdoor in it, so other people (TLauncher owners) can execute any commands, having full control over it, but this is probably not a virus and instead a spyware that tries to silently collect and send info of your PC, which may and probably include passwords, login info or other important information to remote servers that are owned or managed by the creators of this spyware.
@@siamofficialyt How are you certain of this though? Most viruses run hidden in the background and not every anti virus tool can detect them. Some people use a virus invested pc for years without realizing there is a problem.
They just banned me in their VK group when I started asking them questions about the source code of their launcher. And they deleted all my messages so other people wouldn't see my questions.
It's just sad when you see people from your country saying something like "God's with us" or "America's trying to ruin Russia" in defence of cracked minecraft launcher

FYI, small detail- pretty sure the official Minecraft launcher bundles java by default, so if you don't have Java, you won't actually be asked to download this. Had an issue with this a long time ago when I tried to install fabric then realizing I straight up never actually installed java
It used to preinstall java but in the past 1-2 months they made it a manual install with no error message while installing the launcher but it only give you an error like "javaw.exe not found" when starting a version of the game after installing the launcher
I don't use Windows, on my end (I use Linux as my daily driver) when I install a Minecraft launcher (e.g Prism), java gets autimatically installed from the offical repositories. On Windows though I would I have install java 8 and 17 manually for most third party launchers except the offical one which has it bundled. Edit: I actually had same problem when using the offical Minecraft launcher on Windows, I tried to install forge, but java wasn't installed, my fix was to execute it via CMD, in the directory where Minecraft installs java.
@@TheRealAlphaXDofficial launcher sucks. The only case I needed it was when I wanted to run bedrock to test rtx (I was quite disappointed... Java shaders do better and give more frame rate). It's totally obsolete imho. Plus you get tons of spyware with that

their launcher is so good that when you get an OpenGL error they tell you to "Downgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 7" as a solution, holy shit what a solution.
Seems kinda weird that they want you to go through the hassle of downgrading and risk losing assess to other programs. Windows 7 has not gotten free security updates since 2020, so they may be using fake errors to get you to open a backdoor. R.I.P Windows 7

I was using TLauncher for 6 years, until 1 week ago. I watched your video, and even though Minecraft Official is expensive in India, I bought it. Thank you so much for the advice, and to letting me know that it had such a shady past, and may still be shady. (I am subbed for 2 years now :D )
I've been using TLauncher for about 8 years, I knew that this is some sort of sketchy things going on around here, but i didn't have enough money to afford licensed copy of Minecraft. Last year my ex-girlfriend gifted me an official copy of Minecraft. I'm suffering the consequences of using TLauncher until now. Here, In Russia, we have some sort of pirate culture and it's very big and developed, because of the prices on games and thoughts like "Why would I buy a computer game, when I can download it for free?".
what consequences did you face? i've been using tlauncher for a long time and nothing happened to me yet, if all they're doing is selling my data then i don't care but there's something else then i'm worried

I think an ingenious strategy to catch the TLauncher team with very solid proof is by running TLauncher in a virtual machine, then force freezing the Virtual Machine, and then dumping all processes to a file, and then also dumping all of TLauncher's contents onto that file or a separate file, and then finding solid proof to show TLauncher's dark secrets. And by doing this on a live stream, this will definitely get TLauncher out of the way, and TLauncher could also possibly be sued for false DMCA takedowns and privacy and malware stuff. Moral of the story: don't be a duᎷb and annoying and deceiving company
Summary: a UA-camr made a video exposing a shady Minecraft launcher with potential viruses, then 2 days later they responded with even more lies to “justify” themselves but were debunked in the simplest way.
Using lies to damage control, favorite tactic, isn't it? I plan actually getting Minecraft legitimately. You did the right thing, and exposed those fools.
There are still some people in this comment section that insist TLauncher is safe, which just goes to show how much of an influence it has. This is a serious problem with free software, especially in the minecraft community. People will go out of their way to download sketchy software, and then are surprised when the sketchy software is malicous. This series on TLauncher is really well put together and I hope to see more deep dives like this in the future.
how is it malicious? all the actual evidence he shows is 10 virus alerts on virustotal from some random modified file (not showing the actual code that flagged the virus alerts) and also showing some code that collects diagnostic info for crashes and general system info every other software collects (btw i dont use tlauncher and have not heard of it before watching this guy's videos)
@@AnEnderNonI mean, when you consider their incredibly shaky response with absolutely nothing to back it up, I’m gonna be honest I think it speaks for itself even if the proof to begin with wasn’t entirely telling

@@TheMisterEpic why? you say that "oh they COULD change it to something malicious", yes they could but so could the actual minecraft launcher, if you didnt find anything malicious why would you put that part in?
@@AnEnderNon because the official launcher (as well as other "honest" launchers) downloads Java from the *official* source. You can always check the hashes and make sure that the files have not been modified. In case of TLauncher, _for some reason_ they download "their own" Java when they could download the official one, and you have no way to make sure that this "their own" Java will not harm your system.
@@aleks-ivanov legally they have to download OpenJDK as licensing the regular release of Java for anything that isn't personal use is messy, which is why even the official launcher uses OpenJDK
Official launcher uses Microsoft OpenJDK Build, which can be confirmed that it won't harm any system. TLauncher, on the other hand, we cannot make sure if it's a safe JRE build
I knew before that there is something shady behind this crappy launcher and not knowing any alternatives motivated me to buy Minecraft for the full price, which is somewhat expensive there. Thank you for bringing this up as not so many people know about it. It would be nice for the vid to have captions in other languages, like Russian for example as the language barrier can be a problem and if someone would want to reupload the translated vid it would probably be DMCAed. Most people don't understand one single thing: good virus is a sneaky one, you won't be able to find it unless you're specifically trying to do so. If they haven't found a virus in there, it doesn't mean that there're no viruses. 2000 rubles (that is how much minecraft costs in Russia) just seems too much for a game for most people. I've personally seen just two pirated minecraft launchers. One of them is TLauncher. The other one is TL (older version of TLauncher, as far as I know), which I've discovered by buying a disk containing a pirated version of the game (I haven't realised that it was pirated until that shop got permanently closed for legal reasons (yeah, you could buy a disk with a pirated game in Russia, that's a long story though)). Just two, and both of them were made by the same team. That's how popular TLauncher in Russia is.
and to be fair 2k rub is quite a lot considering that places like steam have regional prices that would drop that to at least 1.5k And u know steam wouldn't drop prices for nothing
It's so sad too. The original dev is still working on his launcher naming it the "tlauncher legacy launcher". It's still updated and is the safest launcher out there
I have bit more information on this. This is not original TLauncher. Original one was renamed to TL, original author is turikhay (as i remember). The current TLauncher just registered a trademark and started to sue with turikhay for it. As a result, they ARE doing bad things with viruses and an original launcher is still alive.
Lmao I used to use Tlauncher to play when I was still in highschool, but have since upgraded and bought myself the actual game immediately after getting a job and being paid. Too bad it had to come to this. I salute you for spreading this information, cause I definitely didn’t know that it was this bad
I am Russian, thank you very much for telling everyone that the tlauncher is a virus, my translation may not be very good. Good luck hitting 1 million!
Why do you tell this? Your comment has literally 0 mistakes. It's always like that! People who worry that their translation might be bad, and they literally have 0 mistakes. But the ones who are actually bad at English never admit it, and try to defend themselves when you criticize them for their grammar mistakes.
its so ironic, my friend told me about 3 days ago that if i don't want to pay for Minecraft on pc, i can just download Tlauncher and still have the updates and the ability to download mods, and then i see two videos exposing it for being a scam launcher
And just like that, politics is now in Minecraft as well. As a Russian myself, I apologise for my braindead comrades. It's just because without TLauncher they most likely won't be able to play pirated Minecraft (not sure how many pirate launchers are still out there), and that would be a disaster to them. Piracy has become an integral part of gaming culture in Russia, and it's still growing ever so stronger because of current politics and sanctions.
Piracy in itself does not feel much like a bad action, when the volume of players looking to pirating doesn't overwhelm the amount that give the parent company (Microsoft in this case) money. I bought my account at a time where the price was lower than it currently is, so I know it's become less accessible for people who can't put money aside for a game. My worry is that when people struggle during times of conflict or economic recession, it's easy to form distrust of things that don't benefit you. Malicious people take advantage of this, they give enough of a good thing to satisfy struggling people in order to exploit them. That's what I believe causes this extreme following. I think people are satisfied by what they are given, and either don't think of the chance for better, or are scared that they will lose it.
Typical Russian "shady men". Srsly, among all the popular dudes who turned out to be criminals, most of them tried to defend/justify themselves with more list before trying to escape the country
what i most hate about tlauncher is once you uninstall it, it completely delets your .minecraft folder yet leaves trays behind with sus exe files. Of course i had to find out the hard way, looking through my programms i dont use, uninstalling it and then boom, loosing 15gb of minecraft worlds, texturepacks, mods etc. No confirmation, nothing. They just wipe you off.
Well, I agree that TL sounds very suspicious, however I would like to explain exactly what the functions you screenshoted do. 5:03 This function sends telemetry about what version of Minecraft you have installed, and has nothing to do with the programs installed on your pc. 5:07 Another basic telemetry. 5:11 Now this is really bad. This way they are logging the ip addresses of the servers and thus they are directly violating your and the servers owners' privacy. 5:19 The cmd mentioned is actually called by TLauncher. You can see the command prompt window pop up when your game crashes and it shows the error stack and displays some launch logs. The Launcher runs Minecraft verbose in order to show these errors similarly how you would run your Minecraft server manually. 5:25 dxdiag cannot alter any drivers from your pc. The option "/whql=off" will enable dxdiag to display information about drivers that were not downloaded via windows update. As a conclusion TLauncher does indeed collect some stuff from your pc. This is a somewhat normal telemetry. Official Minecraft does this too. Your browser does this too. Even your wallpaper engine from steam collects some data. If you really really want privacy, then just don't play Minecraft and switch to linux, start using tor or even better become a monk. From a legal point of view all this data should be mentioned in the "terms and conditions". I am not supporting TLauncher tho. I am saying that your claims about the code are to an extent exaggerated. Stay safe and do not pirate games.
5:11 is actually used for blacklisting servers in launcher. And this is really cursed shit. Basically they promote servers and one of the most expensive server ad is adding server in servers tab ingame, and if you as server owner refuse to pay overprice(because often they say one price, and then that price can turn out to be many times higher) they just blacklist your server so players can't login on your server from TLauncher. Aggresive marketing, my ass.
Using Notch as a legal justification is also doubly funny considering he has literally nothing to do with the game now. His word today on the topic means nothing let alone his word 10 years ago.
So, as a russian who also uses VK, there is a huge possibility that TL devs/managers/whoever just delete all the negative comments, because thats kinda how VK works. If the comment is left in a place that you moderate you can just delete it without any problems (Like deleting a message in your own discord server if im to make this comparion)
7:54 I've had T launcher a while back (thankfully I bought the original game) And all my laptop ports got fried. We couldn't use any of them until we asked a PC technician. The best reaction is what TheMisterEpic did, which is spit in their face and double down.
I still remember the real author of the launcher - turikhay. Back then, when I returned to Minecraft after dropping it in 2015 or so, I figured the TLauncher at that moment looked a bit too "polished" or commercialised. Eventually, my suspicions have all been arriving at a well disguised conspiracy turikhay has gone through. Since then, been using the OG TLauncher from turikhay that looked as (to its own benefit at this point) bland and simple as before. Though a bit of digging the entire internet to find just his version was needed to play Minecraft on any of my closest people's machines.
Hello from Russia and yes, this 'software' is very popular here!!! The problem is that TLauncher became the big part of Russian Minecraft Community. And even I've had the Pirated Minecraft back in 2010's. Average Russian child can't afford 2000 rubles for Licensed one, so that become to existence of TLauncher. Sadly, a few from community can see the problems in TLauncher and most of the people would defend TLauncher rather than buy the licensed copy. Upd.: sorry for my English, I tried but my knowledge of English is awful.
I understand this a bit, my friend playing minecraft on Nintendo Switch, got his switch broken and stuff, so he had to move onto PC. That's when he used Tlauncher for quite some time, eventually, his antiviruses caught on that there is malware in that software. So him, being the child he is, used other versions of pirated minecraft. Can't blame him though, 30 USD to play on all devices sounds like a dream to him.

The new launcher for the java edition that replaced the 1.6 launcher of the game downloads its own version of Java. The reason for it boils down to oracle tightening security on newer releases of the JVM. This means the fix mojang had introduced to allow versions that predate release 1.6 to run in other directories broke when running on a version of Java newer than 8. Forge also breaks when running on newer versions of Java. This being said, Mojang hosts downloads for Java. There is no reason to host your own versions of Java.
The worst part of tlauncher, is that there isn't a direct uninstall button. You have to directly go into the files and delete them yourself. When I finally bought mc, I had to find every minecraft related file excluding mods and resource packs.
As a Russian, I want to say that most of TLauncher audience are just kids who don't have enough money to buy Minecraft/can't do it cuz of sanctions. And that became their only reliable source to play mc
I remember using this launcher before and it was always shady to me. I never understood why I could never find the original TLauncher and kept finding the Russian one, but now I know why. I haven't used it in a long time, thankfully. P.S. The launchers themselves are perfectly legal since they don't contain code owned by Mojang, it's downloading the game JAR from a source other than Mojang's server that isn't.

The "We are Russians and god with us" is hilarious, because its kind of Russian meme.
as a half Russian I agree

As a person learning Russian, I agree
(I know 2 words)
As a Russian, i think 8:28 “God is with us!” Phrase is like a meme to me. TLauncher braindead admins were trying to call up to patriotism and etc, but every person with at least 1 braincell would laugh at that. Adequate people even making jokes with that, like “Two alcoholics are trying to catch a taxi and asked driver to get 3 onboard. Driver asked where is 3rd and alcoholics said, that they are Russians and God with us”
Also, it such an irony, to radicalize every non-russian users by calling them nazis or racists.

Nice I will buy the game one day when I get 800 💷 so yeah this video made me feel bad
I pirate!
Essentially OP blew basic telemetry out of proportion as malicious when most of the software we use that's deemed as safe does he same thing.
are you sure bro
00:01 Funny how Russians and Americans both seem to think each other's countries are rules by oligarchs but not their own
6:07 Also would like to add that the person tweeting doesn't even own Minecraft anymore.
7:54 I've had T launcher a while back (thankfully I bought the original game) And all my laptop ports got fried. We couldn't use any of them until we asked a PC technician. This is genuinely a strategy in 5th generational warfare (information warfare). Russia and China have repeatedly said that they know that racism and culture war issues are America's weak point, and it's typically their first avenue to attempt to shut down criticism from Americans in any capacity.
Though a bit of digging the entire internet to find just his version was needed to play Minecraft on any of my closest people's machines.
the og tlauncher is now known as legacy launcher btw
Hello from Russia and yes, this 'software' is very popular here!!!
The problem is that TLauncher became the big part of Russian Minecraft Community. And even I've had the Pirated Minecraft back in 2010's.
Average Russian child can't afford 2000 rubles for Licensed one, so that become to existence of TLauncher.
Sadly, a few from community can see the problems in TLauncher and most of the people would defend TLauncher rather than buy the licensed copy.

4:30 this happened before I bought Minecraft, I had some issues with my computer and I didn't know of MalwareBytes yet, so I had no option other than to install a pirated antivirus, I somehow installed an old version of Kaspersky antivirus and activated it. Funnily the first thing it did was deleting the modified Java. After that something went wrong and I couldn't use Chrome, luckily internet explorer saved me and I installed java from there.
Internet explorer always there when we need it! Real MVP
I watched your previous video on tlauncher and I uninstalled it. I then saw the pinned post on r/piratedgames and decided to buy Minecraft for myself. Thank you for making this video TheMisterEpic!
bruh Tlauncher didn't even put a ton of effort in their lies.
Did you also need to delete java
Since I just bought Minecraft and I don't know if I should also delete java

why do i still use it even after it was proven to be malware

I remember using this launcher before and it was always shady to me. I never understood why I could never find the original TLauncher and kept finding the Russian one, but now I know why. I haven't used it in a long time, thankfully.
P.S. The launchers themselves are perfectly legal since they don't contain code owned by Mojang, it's downloading the game JAR from a source other than Mojang's server that isn't.
some countries like mine actually allow piracy, it's actually very interesting bc i can legally pirate: music, movies, shows, apps and games completely legal for personal use but if you share it is when that become illegal.
It's crazy that Tlauncher, such a huge minecraft launcher, uses a bunch of viruses, proves that just because a company is big, doesn't necessarily mean that the company is safe.

Amazing video! Keep up the great work!
They worked around the method used to have it actually scanned - Now we have to re-sign the file(s) pulled with a certificate we would generate using SelfCert found in Microsoft Office installations to have these actually scanned. They cannot work around this as the certificates are generated using unique randomness (in Linux terms, some kind of /dev/urandom) generated thanks to the entropy gained on your local machine - Those who had a history with GnuPG know what I am talking about here.
