Hi Niamh !! I liked your video!! A young girl who knows a lot of progressive rock especially the seventies (the best phase), uauh!!. I would put Jethro Tull in the S, Camel in the A, Rush in the A, and the other stuff in general I agree. Genesis, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd are outstanding!! The best progressive rock albums ever for me are: Selling England by The Pound, Foxtrot, Fragile, Aqualung, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Animals, Trilogy, In The Court Of The Crimson King, Larks Tongues In Aspic, Red, Moonmadness, Free Hand. If you don't mind can I give you some suggestions (as a much older person who has loved rock music since the early teens)??!! for old groups: Barclay James Harvest (Try the seventies albums, not much the 80s), Manfred Mann's Earth Band (all the seventies albums and early eighties, fantastic!!), Procol Harum (not all prog but some albums are), Focus (seventies great Dutch band), Premiata Forneria Marconi (aka PFM) (Italian band, perhaps the best Italian prog rock group), Strawbs (UK folk-prog rock), Gryphon (UK medieval folk prog rock). Bands still playing and formed this century or very near the end of the XX century: Wobbler (Norwegian band), The Flower Kings (Swedish Band), Agussa (Swedish band) Big Big Train (UK band), Spock's Beard (American band), Agusa (Swedish band). See you!!
Nektar and Kansas are highly recommended. For Nektar, Remember The Future and A Tab In The Ocean are good starting points. Kansas, their first 6 albums are awesome, but for their biggest prog album, thats their self titled debut. The last 2 tracks, Apercu and Death Of Mother Nature Suite, are just magical.
If you want a great Klaatu album, hope is my personal favorite from them. Works more as a single unit than any of their other albums. Most of their other stuff is really cool though. Like ELO/Beatles with just a bit of prog.
Nice tier list. I love Caravan, Gong, Camel, Kansas, Gentle Giant, Nektar, VDGG, PFM, Le Orme, Banco, Klaatu (very Beatle-esque), Renaissance, etc, a lot of Krautrock and underground Italian bands as well, all their 70's albums are very good, you know. I still didn't get Magma after years of trying to like them. I love this bands but get bored of Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Alan Parsons, Styx, Supertramp, because people plays them and talk about them always, all the time on social media and youtube, that's boring after years and years of that same thing on and on, just like when people only talks about Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Marilyn Manson, Queen, AC/DC, Limp Bizkit, KoRn, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, or Yngwie Malmsteen. * I prefer Sepultura's early albums (1986-1993) before Roots (that's one of my least favorites like Bestial Devastation EP, Roorback or Dante XXI) and like some with Derrick Green like Against, The Mediator, Machine Messiah, or Quadra. I like a few Max Cavalera's Soulfly albums. Nailbomb was a great project.

Great list. I highly recommend you listen to the first 5 Kansas albums, you'll really enjoy them. Their debut and self titled album Kansas is great. Song For America has some great epic tracks like "Song for America", Lamplight Symphony" and Incomudro-Hymn to the Atman". Masque is great, the song "The Pinnacle" is a masterpiece. Leftoverture is one of the great Progressive Rock albums of all time in my opinion "Carry on Wayward Son" was a big hit for them but rest of the songs are even better. Point of Know Return is excellent the songs are little shorter but the whole album is really good. They have other good albums too but these 5 are the go to albums for me. First time seeing your show good job.
If you haven’t already, listen to A Passion Play, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses and Stormwatch; all by Jethro Tull. As a die hard fan, I’m so glad they made A tier.
The Moody Blues should've been on the list as well. Also, give 'LeftOverture' by Kansas a listen. And BTW, begin with track #2 ("The Wall") as track #1 ("Carry On Wayward Son") has been overplayed to death for decades on classic rock radio.
I agree on Rush, very consistently good. ELP is a bit weird for me. I actually haven't listened to that much of it, some was definitely not my thing, but Tarkus I think is pretty much the "epitome" of 70s prog rock.
ELP are like Marmite…not because you either love them or hate them, but whether you like them or not depends very much on how thickly you spread it. Too much it makes you sick. Camel, Caravan, Yes, Genesis, Tull are all S Tier for me.
Niamh...I watch your channel when it pops up and I've mentioned to you before there are 2 Italian bands you should hunt down they're not too hard to find, on UA-cam . They are Acqua Fragile (two albums done in the 70's and one in (2017 not as good)the first 2 are amazing right up there with Genesis IMO and MAXOPHONE only 1 album from the 70's but it's one of my all time favorites.
A good and fair review , I would have put ELP in the top bracket but I understand ,they did fall from a great height with stuff like In the Hot Seat and Works 1 .Genesis and King Crimson I totally agree with , have you tried Focus at all, brilliant band and have seen them live in the few years !
Nice to see Renaissance included! I see such lists often. Two of the very best '70's bands (for me anyways) are always missing, maybe because UK audiences never embraced them (I'm in California). I'd include Horslips and Strawbs on any list of progressive musicians.
it always cracks me up when ppl would rather complain about someone's list rather than just make their own. i have a feeling it's because they're so Fragile they're afraid someone will....criticize their list.
Van der Graaf, Gentle Giant and Magma are S for me along with all your picks. I needed time to get used to all three. Jethro Tull, Gong, Camel, Caravan and PFM would probably be my A tiers. Mars Volta, ELP and Nektar at B; Eloy's C; can't get into Porcupine Tree, don't care about Klaatu or Kansas, for some reason have never heard Alan Parsons (knowingly at least)
Great video and your ranking is pretty close to mine. I would have Eloy and Nektar in the A tier, Klaatu B and Gong S. Porcupine Tree I know but don't listen to. I would put Kansas in the C. Nice to see a video from you! Keep it up!
Good list. I like your extra categories. Of course Tiermaker fails to include several artists, including my favorite band, Marillion. You could do maybe a Classic Rock or Prog Metal one as well (or others, like any of the Metal bands or albums, or maybe Punk?)
A short and "classic" list but it is just a bit of the point of the prog iceberg, i see also that you still didn´t dig enough on the Italian(a world of their own) and Escandinavian prog for example, so i leave you some names for you to listen, i am sure you will like, from Italy there are so many and many of them with only one or two records, i leave here just a few, Area, Locanda delle fate, Semiramis, Osanna, Moseo Rosenbach, Arti e mestieri, Quella vechia locanda, Balleto di Bronzo, from Escandinavia Anglagard, Anekdoten, Wobbler, Arabs from aspic, Jordsjo, Ring van mobius, The chronicles of Father Robin, lars Froislie, from France, Shylock, Ange, from Germany Pell mell, Novalis, Triumvirat, Frumpy, from Spain Crack, Triana, Iceberg, Gotic, from Canada Sloche, from USA Cathedral, Babylon, Hands, Yezda Urfa, from Portugal, Tantra, Jose Cid(10 000 anos), and this is just a litle tip of the prog world you can discover, so enjoy the ride
great idea niamh. also great to see you back here. i hope you update your tier list in the future, when you wanna add more prog bands to this list:) and maybe you should do metal and classic rock or even grunge videos too, couse you love those. just my opinion tho. some proggers hate metal but, who cares, this is a music related youtube channel, you can do whatever you want.
Have you ever reviewed Mighty Baby? 1969 British psych prog rock...amazing but never heard of them until the past week. I can understand burnout and I like to think I just like good music and genre be damned. Glad to see you back and check them out if you haven't heard them
i'd put van der graaf generator up there with genesis. but same as you, i can't get into vdgg albums easily, i love the ones i listen to, some of those albums took time to get used to and consume as well. and again, i listen to every bit of peter gabriel era genesis, not as challenging i guess. but both bands do equally great music in my opinion
Good music is good music . I try not to limit my listening choices by giving it a category . I have always thought that Yes was the best , full stop , but Rush was only three guys. Jethro Tull was so diverse , but Todd Rundgren broke so many barriers with some of his work . I've listened to , and loved Zappa , and I'm not even sure if he has a category. Music is music . Good music is good music , and great music is so precious it should never be L I M I T E D !
This is my list S: King Crimson, Magma, Van Der Graaf Generator, Allan Holdsworth A:Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, Jethro Tull, Camel, Gentle Giant. B: Porcupine Tree, Rush C: Gong, Caravan, Eloy, PFM, Nektar D: The Mars Volta, Renaissance
I can highly recommend Kansas's classic albums like Leftoverture, Point of No Return, and Song for America. Kansas back in their prime delivered the proggy complexity and virtuosity, and they could rock really hard. They are really good beyond just the hits. When I got to see them live during the 90's and 2000's, they were fantastic in concert.
I'm surprise to see PFM in your list. An italian band. Have you ever had a chance to listen to AREA? It's really great Italian progressive/experimental band.
Fun list. While YES is my favorite band, I can't disagree with you, especially considering their last several albums. There's S-tier YES, and then there's B YES, and then there's C or D YES. I think when Steve Howe passes one day, it will be on stage, playing one of his solos.
A solid B on these valiant efforts, but a solid A+ on your intelligent choice of genres. As they are all technically proficient, weight has to confer upon pioneers of the form, which was pretty well complete by 1974. King Crimson, Early Yes, Pink Floyd, PFM, Moody Blues, Zappa, Sgt. Pepper, Gong, Early Genesis, Strawbs, Gryphon, VDGG and Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull all deserve a place at the high table. Most of the others, if honest, will concur, generally, if threatened with having to listen to Nickleback or Ye. ELP also deserves a seat at the high table, although it was long fashionable to poke fun. "Pictures at an Exhibition" alone, puts them there, just as "Close to the Edge" and "Awaken" and "Tales" put Yes firmly there. Rush strikes me as pretenders, and that voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I was told that 2112 was their "Close to the Edge" but so far, I don't hear it. It seems late to the game, historically.
Roots is a pretty good record but the three before them are classics for me. I knew very little of Porcupine Tree a few years back, but now they are a top ten band. Really can't argue with the S tier as they are all time greats no matter the genre.
Rush (my favorite band period, regardless of anything ever) Genesis Van Der Graaf Generator King Crimson Kansas Jethro Tull Gentle Giant Camel Pink Floyd Moody Blues IQ ELP ELO Marillion Yes Ambrosia Dixie Dregs Styx Starcastle Matching Mole CAN Le Orme PFM Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso Locanda Della Fate Supertramp Caravan
And after that..... Family, Aphrodites Child, Focus, Kayak, The Nice, Soft Machine, Hatfield and The North, Fruup, Banco di Mutuo Soccorso, Locomotiv GT, The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, The Open Mind, Le Orme......
Thanks for the thoughtful list. And the honesty! I would agree with almost all your rankings, with a few exceptions. Rush, sorry. Can't stand them. I've tried and tried and tried, and failed and failed and failed. Just don't like metal. And Yes, of course. I like everything by them, except the ones without Jon (Drama, and everything after Magnification). For me, they would be S. But kudos on your placement of Van der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant. Vastly under-appreciated.
I have no argument with that. I'm not much of a Rush fan so that'll be my only quibble. Down with Rush! 🤣 I like Yes more but I probably would have put them in the A category also. The only change I would have made was Jethro Tull would be in my S section. And do get to Nektar. They're a little more harder edged than PMF. They can get to Jethro Tull levels of prog rocking hardness and the early albums mix psychedelia into it. PMF has folkish/classical guitar parts and if you love mellotron you'll enjoy almost everything up to Jet Lag.
Good list. I am not such a fan of King Crimson and like Porcupine Tree and Kansas much more. I agree somewhat with your comments about Yes. But their good is so great that I would put in them in the S tier. My favorite group since 81 has been Rush. I am a more hard rock with some prog. then full crazy prog. I do not like songs that lose the groove for technical songs.
......to vary your sonix......read Thurston Moore's interview, solely on early 70s folk like John Fahey, Michael Chapman, Brigitte St John, John Martin.......his secret enthusiasm has always been these alternative tuning meisters.....sonically, Niamh gets harder, I go softer.....I go the way Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore.......exercise your ears with a few changes of key.
Either YT fails to notify me,or you have been away for a few or more months Good to see you back i disagree with ZERO on your "S" list i almost perfectly picked the "S" list from the go LOL i may only add "Hawkwind", and "King Gizzard" and Voivod? Tho they don't follow the traditional path of all the ones you list In fact, i recall a time when prog nerds despised Hawkwind i am pleased that Prog is still alive and well i 've just discovered this band The Anchoret "It All Began With Loneliness" ua-cam.com/video/U3b_GMUQvUo/v-deo.html It is mind-bending prog and with repeated listens it is bound to make my "S" list i would love to hear your spin on it,and your Dad as well would be nice Cheers
Have heard them and at first I was hopeful, but then I came to realise that the more I heard of them all I was hearing was every trick in the Rush catalogue. Even worse is the fact that they lift complete themes, riffs and ideas and if Rush weren't the super nice guys they are then they could probably use for plagiarism.
Not a big fan of these tier lists, especially for things like bands - and extra especially for prog bands that sometimes have a 50+ years carreer. 1970s Kansas is almost a different band from late 80s Kansas, not to mention Yes or Genesis.
S Yes Pink Floyd Rush Genesis Jethro Tull A Porcupine Tree Van Der Graaf Gentle Giant Renaissance Eloy Camel King Crimson PFM (from what I've heard) Everyone else is B or C
I highly recommend Klaatu's Hope album. Easily one of the most underrated concept albums yet it's a masterpiece; I'd even go as far as to say it's the best concept album, although I enjoy some other albums which technically classify as concept albums more than this (Wish You Were Here, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven, Everywhere at the End of Time, F# A# Infinity, Dark Side of the Moon). It's in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Haven't checked the band's other works besides their debut which is also pretty great but defiantly not as much as Hope and other prog albums in general, but I'd say it was still a strong debut. I've heard their other albums are also pretty good, except one which they were forced to make a more commercial album although it's not bad as far as I know, but in the end Hope is considered their magnum opus.
If I were to make another tier list video, what would you guys want the topic to be? Let me know!
Nu-Metal! Let’s go for some controversy.
albums of your s-tier bands
How about ranking the genres of music you like....
Rank your favorite bands discographies 🤔
European prog bands
Kansas is highly recommended. Their live album "Two for the Show is one of the best live albums I have ever heard.
Kansas American so not prog at all AOR
Yes, they are fantantastic!!!!!
@merlinman7300 wtf man so prog bands need to be British now?

Roots is a classic and my favorite metal album. Nice to see someone talking about it.
I definitely agree with you about Rush,Genesis and Pink Floyd. All exceptional bands.
If you want a great Klaatu album, hope is my personal favorite from them. Works more as a single unit than any of their other albums. Most of their other stuff is really cool though. Like ELO/Beatles with just a bit of prog.
Couple of bands/individuals I would have added to the list, Focus & Mike Oldfield

If you haven’t already, listen to A Passion Play, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses and Stormwatch; all by Jethro Tull. As a die hard fan, I’m so glad they made A tier.
I'm a fan of *Wood* and *Heavy Horses.* The anniversary editions are gorgeous!
...Passion Play, Songs from the wood👌👍!

I mainly listen to 70's music so my S tier would be: Rush, Genesis, Yes, Max Webster, Kansas, Steve Hackett solo, Mile Davis, Queen.
I still enjoy Tier List rankings! Great ranking. QuestforMetal (now Questy) would approve of this video.

What do you think of Mr.Bungle? Or any Mike Patton band in general?
Have you heard Satori by Flower Travellin Band? It's one of the best Heavy Prog/Psych albums of all time!
Are you into Rock In Opposition bands like Univers Zero, Samla Mammas Manna and Aksak Maboul?
Interesting. You forgot The Nice.
your hair looks good!
......to vary your sonix......read Thurston Moore's interview, solely on early 70s folk like John Fahey, Michael Chapman, Brigitte St John, John Martin.......his secret enthusiasm has always been these alternative tuning meisters.....sonically, Niamh gets harder, I go softer.....I go the way Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore.......exercise your ears with a few changes of key.
I will try to keep it short....starts at 3 15 : )
Either YT fails to notify me,or you have been away for a few or more months
Good to see you back
i disagree with ZERO on your "S" list
i almost perfectly picked the "S" list from the go LOL
i may only add "Hawkwind", and "King Gizzard" and Voivod?
Tho they don't follow the traditional path of all the ones you list
In fact, i recall a time when prog nerds despised Hawkwind
i am pleased that Prog is still alive and well
i 've just discovered this band
The Anchoret "It All Began With Loneliness"
ua-cam.com/video/U3b_GMUQvUo/v-deo.html
It is mind-bending prog and with repeated listens it is bound to make my "S" list
i would love to hear your spin on it,and your Dad as well would be nice
Cheers
You should check out a really good prog rock band called Thank You Scientist
1 - Genesis 1971-1980 and After Crying 1988-1996, 2 - everyone else.
Great video, I agree with most of your rankings, and you look so beautiful!
Have you heard Haikara by Haikara? It's one of the best prog albums ever made!
I am a huge fan of Rush just like you. You should give Crown Lands a listen. A duo from Canada that is very much Rush inspired.
By the way, do you like progressive metal? Such as Opeth, Gojira, Enslaved, Emperor...?
i do!
@@the_prog_nerd Niceeee, I fucking love Opeth and Enslaved, they're my favourite metal bands of all time.
Anybody know what's her favourite (PF) album? Also, couldn't Zappa be on here?
I'm gonna guess Atom Heart Mother or Animals.
Have you heard Gusliar by Pesniary? It's the second best prog album ever made!
Have you listened to Pulsar from France 🇫🇷 they are great
Cheers from guadalajara Mexico 🇲🇽
Have you heard Framtiden är ett svävande skepp by Älgarnas Trädgård? It has the best album cover of all time!
Keep, em coming!
Yo have forgot Focus and Supertramp. Do you know BJH?
That Jon Davison thing with "Yes" is the worst thing in music, I hate it. Some solo stuff recently from Jon Anderson is very beautiful.
ELP have always been interesting !
Have you heard Hybris by Änglagård? It's the best prog album of the 90s!
Have you heard Angherr Shispa by Koenji Hyakkei? They are one of the best zeuhl bands that's not Magma!
Have you heard Shintokumaru by J.A.Seazer? It's the best prog album ever made!
Eloy! Nice 👍🏼
What about Dream Theater?
🌠Good List..hello from America..I like your blue wall..I woulda put Yes ..@ the top with the others..other then that I agree with u..
Not a big fan of these tier lists, especially for things like bands - and extra especially for prog bands that sometimes have a 50+ years carreer. 1970s Kansas is almost a different band from late 80s Kansas, not to mention Yes or Genesis.
Porcupine tree and Yes in the same category.... Interesting. Otherwise great video Thsnks
Aww rate Yes at their best in the '70s... good review
Bloody Roots!
"Tier maker?: "No, she went of her own accord."

Renaissance
Eloy
Camel
King Crimson
PFM (from what I've heard)
Everyone else is B or C

Camel at least A tier , Yes S Tier, Rush A tier or B, pink floyd A tier ... as always is it just my opinion 🙂
The only band on here I really listen to is Renaissance
Marillion??
Nektar is Very Underrated
