Resulting in Marina having to produce this entire album by herself with only one other guy, write alone, pay for her own album cover shoot completely out of pocket & do her own promotion without help from the label. She could’ve had it easy if she let them “pin her down” but she decided to forage her own path. Marina has also stated that label executives literally told her straight up that they didn’t think this album could do well. Just fyi ‘FROOT’ went on to be her first top ten album in the U.S. so she definitely got the last laugh ;) + Marina actually just recently left her label & is now independent!
The song Savages was made after the Boston marathon bombing, in a interview she said this “It’s so hard to reconcile how one man can be running a charity race, while another man is building a bomb to blow this person up. That’s how it started, and I think it was more a result about how these same kinds of news stories keep coming up day-in and day-out” and with that added context it makes that song even more impactful
Agree - this album is near total perfection - lyrically has some powerful existential lyrics on Happy, Froot and Immortal … and the production is both varied and cohesive - it still flaws me in its brilliance!! Praying for a vinyl rerelease
i’m super happy your reacting to marina again honestly all her music has such amazing important messages! and in reference to your question about what the media tried to pin her down as… at first she was made to sound more “rock” but she didn’t like that sound. During her first album she was introduced as quirky because for the time her music was very different from what other mainstream female artists were doing. There were a lot of comments about her she looks and her potential as a pop artist but she made it clear that she didn’t ever want to be a pop artist. I think the media actually framed her in quite a good light but there were certainly people trying to make her into something she wasn’t and didn’t want to be. I really hope you listen to her other albums at some point:)

When you dive into Electra Heart I highly recommend you to listen to Froot again, you'll see the album with a 3d glasses and be able to catch some layers about the struggle she's been through during Electra Heart era. I see Froot like a detox from her past album and the character (the housewife) created by the label in order to make her huge in USA. Sad that such iconic album damaged her mental health so badly. "Better Than That" was my initial favorite song from this album back in 2015, but since then I've been changing my mind like 3 times at least LOL (Happy, I'm a Ruin, Forget...). Same with all her albums, you can listen to them over and over and you'll still find new details to dig. That's the power and richness of Marina's music. Love her.

Better than that is (allegedly) about Ellie Goulding who rose came into the music industry around the same time as Marina - both were nominated for the Rising Star Brit Award in 2010 (Florence won 2009 and Adele in 2008) and i remember them having pictures together at the time. I forget the whole story but Ellie apparently reacted badly to it when fans queried it. Savages/Immortal definitely has that impact on a lot of us first listen
The feud with Ellie was because she hook up with her ex boyfriend at the time, when she was touring in US for her Lonely Hearts Club Tour. Marina's ex boyfriend was Dj Burns. Ellie even have a song with him.

Listening to this album alongside you is so nostalgic. Electra Heart is one of my favorite albums of all time and extremely important to me, and when she releases FROOT and I heard "Happy" right out the gate, I bawled my eyes out. Going from EH to FROOT, that song felt so cathartic for me, but I was also so happy for Marina that she got to a place where she could write a song about finding happiness. She's written so many songs that feel so incredibly relatable or hit a deep place within.

I think maybe they were trying to pin her down as the satirical shallow gold-digging melodramatic teenage dream she portrayed in the Electra Heart era, in reality she created the character as satire to allow her to explore new musical genres and themes, but critics really were polarised by it, however the album was CULT on tumblr and still at her live shows people will come with the heart on their cheeks (including me) and they really took this character and RAN, (much to marinas dismay as this was not her intention) but honestly this girlboss character was really formative for teens when it came out! Maybe thats who they were thinking she actually was, rather than just the character!! Can’t wait to see you react to Electra Heart and The Family Jewels!

i rarely leave comments but i just wanted to say i really loved your reaction and review! stumbled in here for marina as a long time stan of hers, but i may find myself sticking around for the great content! i really respect your ability to honestly and succinctly sum up your thoughts on each song and the courage of being totally transparent with your vulnerabilities, and also how you're able to really think about both the production and the lyrics. i really hope you decide to continue listening to marina's work! each album is quite different sonically/thematically, but all of them have a unique vibe that is truly marina's own to them. electra heart is a fan favorite concept album about a character/alter ego of the same name representing the roles/archetypes women are forced to play in the public lexicon, and the family jewels is an equally well-rounded debut for marina with a lot of fun experimental sounds and ideas and a lot of personality. love+fear is a little bit less of a loved album among a lot of stans for its' more commercial vibe, but also stands on its own as a great album with a cohesive and mature feeling and has a few songs that i really adore on it too. i think you'll really enjoy the rest of her work based on the way you seem to have felt about the two albums you've heard so far!
