Trying to FIX a Faulty 1995 US Panasonic 3DO Games Console

  • Hi, this 'trying to fix video shows me attempting to repair a Panasonic 3DO games console donated to me by Asher from the United States. He has also donated a bunch of games and another surprise!!! This particular 3DO is a US based console and it is from 1995. I don't normally accept donations but on this one I thought it would be interesting as personally I had never heard of the 3DO before :-)
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

      My Mate VINCE ohh my gosh serves me right I tried everything. I even tested that ribbon cable haha. That’s amazing that’s why it wasn’t getting power. Guess all my years of fixing stuff and I missed that haha but super happy you got it and fixed it.

      Lol, well it is nice to have a simple fix every now and then :-) It was easier than trying to get through those screens on Dragon's Lair!!!!! I don't remember that game being so hard :-) Thanks for all the other games as well - it's a great collection. Enjoy the rest of the day.

    3DO often gets thrown in with the Philips CD-i as one of the crappy multimedia consoles of the early 90s. However 3DO was actually a cool design created by the same people who came up with the Amiga. The founder of Electronic Arts, Trip Hawkings then formed the 3DO company to sell it. Unfortunately all the companies that they sold the license to, ended up having to sell the machine at way too high a price. Trip really believed in the machine and even left EA to try to make 3DO succeed (EA quickly turned into a monster without his lead). Personally I think 3DO is a fun machine especially if you are into cheesy Full Motion Video games.

    • @roasthunter
      @roasthunter 5 років тому +2

      Yeah I think it was a stupid price like £799, I remember working someone while at University in the 1990s and someone trying to tell me how wonderful it was but it was never going to succeed at that price.

      3do was a pretty awesome console, it had killer graphics for its time the only downside is they really didn't make that many games for it hence why it flopped.

    The 3DO was the first console I bought with my own money. It was quite difficult to get one of these here in Brazil, I saved 1000 dollars in a year to pay for a smuggler to get one of these for me. He would go abroad almost every month and for almost 2 years he'd bring me new games. Unfortunately in one of these trips he got shot on a armed robbery and died in 1997. Sad that to this day we have to rely on smugglers to bring new consoles to the country (an illegal PS4 costs only 300 dollars while an official sony ps4 with taxes costs almost 1000 dollars). Nice video btw.

  • @loganjorgensen

    I thought the license model of the 3DO turned out pretty good since most titles are at least professional looking unlike the CD-i or Amiga CD32 which got some very amateur quality software a lot of the time. I mean yeah 3DO did get Plumbers Don't Wear Ties. ^_^ Dang what a package, great way to start. :D
    Trip Hawkins had this crazy idea that a game console could be like a video player or microwave, unchanging with little to no hardware generations. The multi manufacturing setup did lower the 3DO cost eventually but the ever advancing console scene released the Saturn/PS1/N64 showing the obvious matter that you can't just sit still in that market. :\

    The laser in that 3D0 might actually be a Helium Neon Laser Tube and therefore has high voltages present inside, a Helium Neon Laser should not destroy any discs, Your LCD TV is actually a Multi-Standard LCD-TV, I do think that you are curious about how the system works but if you take the metal screen off and have a look around. I really thought that this 3DO had a Helium Neon Laser.

    The old 3DO was my favourite in the day and i would buy the edge games magazine and the 3DO magazines also which would come with a demo cd and there was articles i read about a chip that was going to be 64 bit and plugged into the expansion slot on the 3DO that chip was going to make the system way way ahead of anything else out there but it never made it to reality and then everyone wanted a playstation but the 3DO is a more powerful system and didnt need memory cards
    either and if i remember correctly when you put in a music cd there was a screen that created mesmerising colour effects and you could change them with the controller.

    I'm guessing if that first game is representative of the 3DO library that would be the reason it wasn't popular. I hate "fixed rail" games! I did play a lot of them back in the day though (House of the Dead!).

    3DO had some affiliation with New World Computing
    i know this because one of my most favorite games of all times is Heroes of Might and Magic and those 2 logos were in the intro (before Ubisoftication)
    23:15 (shame in life)
    i am more dismayed at the fact that some things can be allowed to muddle through on subpar quality when something much beter is niped off inspite of being objectively much beter(Star Trek Enterprise vs Firefly for example, or Jaguar vs Arrows F1 or VW vs SAAB or *insert your underrated studio killed off by corporations* vs E.A. (formly known as electronic Arts now pressumingly standing for Evil Arseholes))

  • @GadgetUK164
    @GadgetUK164 5 років тому +27

    Fantastic pickup!!! There are some great games for the system - things like Space Hulk, Cannon Fodder, Wing Commander, Street Fighter 2 etc. No protection on these I think - pretty sure you can just burn a CD with the ISO. It might be worth removing the PSU board to check for dry solder joints (maybe on the under of the mains lead socket?). If you decide to sell any of the games please let me know! Do you keep all the things you collect - I've always wondered where you store all this stuff lol.

    • @XxRaidenxXminecraft

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 років тому +5

      Cheers Chris, I will pop out the power board and have a close look. I did hear something about the lack of protection but now that emu***adise has gone I haven't looked into any other ISO websites. I do have trouble with storage, bit by bit the house is slowly getting taken over!!!! It is only a matter of time before I start getting grief :-) If you are interested in any game(s) let me know and I will send it up to you (after I have played it/them for a bit). It can be a thank you for the advice and help you dish out on here.

      Excellent, thanks for sharing the info :-) I don't have a huge amount of spare time at the mo. The most things I play are PS4 (online and shareplay), and the Switch. I like testing out different controllers and stuff on different systems so the more controllers and obscure consoles I have the more options it gives :-)

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 5 років тому +2

      No problem =D Yeah, I find myself playing PS4 mostly at the moment too! Mostly Battlefield V and COD Black Ops (Blackout) recently. Just ordered Resident Evil 2 though, looking forward to playing that.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 5 років тому +2

      Haha, I can relate to that! I have stuff in storage crates all over the place (mostly out of sight, but there's no more room here lol). Yeah, I don't expect anything for free - quite happy to pay! I've been after Alone in the Dark for a while! But I can understand if you decide to keep it - it's a long game but I just have so much nostalgia for it. The emuparadise thing is a pain, but there are quite a few other sites hosting ISOs still. I suspect over time they are going to get gradually shut down =/

    LOL. It looked like it was rigged. It's easy to explain why 3d0 flopped? 1. Expensive 2. Different machines 3. Almost same path as cd32, but less attractive 4. PlayStation took a new grip with popular game titles and soon also a lot of fun with n64. Multimedia PC's also rocked in 1994. I have seen a 3d0 in a 90's toystore but it was a rare odd expensive thing so why buy it?

  • @wiesshund-games
    @wiesshund-games 3 роки тому +1

    The 3DO was a nice machine, but the price point was terrible
    No one wanted to build them, they finally got Panasonic on board to build them, but the cost was way too high
    considering that the SNES was competing with it for $99 and carried the Nintendo name, and the Sega machines and Sony had the PS1 coming out soon after, and Sony built their own hardware and had the buying power etc to keep the cost way lower than the 3DO who was only licensing a design for someone else to build and sell.
    The 3DO was like $700 dollars in 1993, so not exactly enticing to parents to rush out and buy one for the kids.
    As far as the hardware itself goes though, for 1993 it was great, if they could have built and sold it for say $299 on release
    it would have probably have had a much nicer fate.

    It's a Panasonic, and yet it uses "Goldstar" components commonly known as "LG" it also uses "NEC" "National Electronic Components", and I am pretty sure I saw a Sanyo Component in there as well.. Shame 3DO never took off, just goes to show greed via an overly bloated release price can kill a killer product..

    I had a 3DO when I was little. The games came in those huge boxes in the beginning but they switched to the smaller jewel cases later on. I don't recognize many of the games you have but there are some good games on the system. The only game you have that I had was Gex which I remember as being one of the better games. I think it was the most powerful console at the time but the price was really really high, like $650 US dollars. I was only able to watch the first bit of the video so far, I really hope you're able to fix it!

    You need to check out Return Fire, Road Rash, Need for Speed, Crash 'n Burn, Way of the Warrior, Off-World Interceptor and PO'ed. The first 4 for sure. All but CnB and WotW were on PS1, but weren't nearly as good as on 3DO.

    3DO failed for two main reasons: The initial $699 price tag, and the lack of a must-have game. Much like the CDI, the 3DO had a large library of weird games that primarily looked like bad ports of PC games, or full motion video Sega CD ports. The closest they ever came was Gex, which was later released for Playstation

      I'm using a Pi 3 B+ right now to control and broadcast my 3D printer and webcam. I love the little box! It barely needs anything to run, but make sure you feed it at least 5vdc and above 2amps if you don't want to voltage throttle. And some minimal cooling if you don't want to temp throttle. Wireless and all built right in! Re-installing a system is as easy as writing an SD card!

    He sent you this for free!!! In my country (NZ) these go for $500 minimum, even broken ones go for around 250-300. the games are like $40 each!!!!
    I own a Panasonic 3DO and about 12 games. it cost me a fortune a few years ago. The Phillips one is even more expensive here.
    The ahem, "game" plumbers don't wear ties (a global meme by now) goes for like $60 haha

    As someone who was a gamer when (and before) the 3DO came out, it was a combination of price and not many compelling games. Road Rash was probably the only one I can think of that I was interested in.

    Hey Vince you should do a video when you put parts from random consoles to make an ULTIMATE console and name it like some xbox one and ps4 parts maybe some nintendo switch parts as well and use the kronis maxs for the controller I doubt youll see this but if you do its worth a shot keep up the good work.

    Funny thing is a Hitachi CX w700 boombox I got from eBay with a faulty cd player, was only faulty because the connector was partly out on one side. Annoyingly only realized after I had tested found it not to spin disc and bought a new laser.

    North America is 110v @ 60Hz with broadcast standard of NTSC (525 scan lines @ 60Hz 30FPS) and UK is 240v @ 50Hz with broadcast standard of PAL (625 scan line @ 50Hz 25 FPS)

  • @abzhuofficial

    1. NTSC: 60Hz (USA/Japan) - PAL: 50Hz (UK/Mainland Europe/Australia)
    2. The video standards of the 1990s is no longer actively enforced in modern media distribution.
    3. @6:50 That is a Raspberry Pi - get a USB plug and wire, plug in the HDMI, and input devices, and you're good to go, once you have a Raspberry Pi OS installed on a microSD card.
    4. The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer has no copy protection, so you can make backups and run them off the 3DO without any system mods

    Hi Vince, I was going to suggest you get a Raspberry Pi as it's something that I think you will really get into. There is a million things you can do with them. They are a great tool for learning computing, electronics and coding, which is something your viewers would be interested in. I'm not really into the coding side of things but love all the other aspects of them. The first thing you are going to want to do is install Retro Pi on it and play all the retro games. retropie.org.uk/ I haven't done so myself but it will get you started on learning how to write an OS to a SD card and get it going on your Pi. There is a huge amount of info about them on UA-cam and the net. Have fun and keep smiling. 😁

    I had a 3DO it has the best version of Wolfenstein , way better then the DOS version
    fyi
    pal is 50hz
    NTSC is 60hz
    it's in line with the countries power grid
    your 220v-240v 50hz
    North America is 110-120v 60hz (although we use 220-230v 60hz for our stoves and dryers )
    there is no copyright protection on this system , just get some quality CDR discs and burn them as slow as possible tons of ISOs on the internet

    I had one of these Panasonic 3DO consoles (the bigger first version). My older cousin just gave it to me one day out of the blue, I guess he got tired of it. I do remember the games that I got with the system were graphically way ahead of anything else out for the home console market at that time. Games were definitely a problem, there weren't that many and even less good ones.

    Ahh the FZ-10, honestly I’m surprised the CD drive works, they usually fail. I have the FZ-1 which is a bit more reliable. There’s no copy protection on these so you can just download the ISO files for games and burn them to a CD-R. I recommend Street Fighter 2, it was the best home port of the game by far, almost arcade perfect but hard to play with the standard 3 button controller but looks like you’ve got a nice 6 button one to play with there. Need For Speed, Road Rash and Return Fire are also pretty good but If you fancy a laugh then get yourself a copy of Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties 😂.
