My grandfather was born in Indiana in 1895. His father was very ill and couldn't help raise him. But never the less, he was able to earn a teaching certificate and nearly right out of high school. (This would have been around 1923-13). He was drafted into WWI and was a private...even though he had a teaching certificate. He was sent to France and faught in the trenches at Argonne Forest. He nearly died there because he developed pneumonia. It rained constantly and they weren't allowed to start a fire to dry out their clothing and stay warm. They eventually had to sneak into the woods to start a fire. He became extremely sick and was moved to the south of France to a hospital there. He stayed there a long time fighting for his life. (Remember there was no penicillin at that time, it hadnt been discovered yet). He was finally well enough for the journey back to the US where he was in a military hospital in Georgia. Hebwas able to finally write a letter to his mother (in Indiana) and brother in Oklahoma. I have the letter he wrote to his brother telling the entire story from when he left Indiana, went on a military train up to Canada, then back through the US and left on a ship to France. He told his brother not to say anything to their mother that he nearly died because he told her that he was doing great.
Sometimes i feel like other countries dont know what its like to send their child away to a foreign courty to fight another country's (continent's) war. Yes, we went, because if germany took france and Britain, the America's would be next. But my grandfather nearly died there, my father was a Korean war vet. I cant imagine how my great grandmother felt to not know where her youngest son was and if he was still alive or suffering somewhere.
Will other countries come to our aide in full force if the 1,000,000 military aged male illegals get their dignal to attack us???
Honestly, I do believe something huge and frightening will happen here in the US before the presidential election.

No matter where you go in the world, there will always be corruption. That being said, I have lived in the US all my life, and wouldn't have it any other way. You are absolutely right when you say that most of the problems are of choice. I am personally obese, and it stems from being abused at work. I was required to lift things alone that should have been with assistance. This has ended in health conditions that have rendered me unable to get the proper exercise I should have. Not to mention that the job I did, did not provide the proper exercise needed to sustain a healthy weight. This is my issue, my lack of knowledge, and is unfortunate, but is and was my choice. In the end, the experience and knowledge I gained in my lifetime was worth all of it. Many people here have been spoiled by the life here, and haven't done the research to see the flaws of living elsewhere. No, not everything is perfect here, but here life can be a matter of perspective, you are free to have an opinion, and voice that opinion. I will be following your vlogs, and would love to see from an outsiders perspective how the scale balances on your decision. Thank you for your videos. It would be interesting to see a video on what rights you may lose by leaving the US.

Paul Johnson wrote a wonderful book "A History of The American People" that's one of the best and fairest takes on American History. Also for an outstanding history of the West Will and Ariel Durant wrote an 11 volunme set that is simply outstanding!

Some states are also comparatively much better to live in. Since we have a strong federalist system we have a wide overarching system of federal laws (Constitution) but also states have a large control of their own individual laws. Just because someone dislikes living in California does not mean they won't hate living in places like Florida or Texas. I personally moved from New England to Georgia and the change was fantastic

I just now caught this broadcast. I was so impressed by your love of history. There is a book, now out of print, that you should read. Its title is “Plain Speaking” by Merle Miller. It is a type of biographical book where former president, Harry Truman, is interviewed by the author. In it Truman is often quoted “The only thing you don’t know is the history you haven’t read yet.” He illustrates that maxim many times in the book when he is asked why he made certain decisions. With your interest in WWII, you can learn how the Marshall Plan was influenced by the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War.
You can sometimes find out of print books online; It’s been several years since I checked for this one, but I was successful then. It would really be worth your while to check it out.

I can’t quite agree with your take on the monarchy. I think the underlying civil society is more important than the theory of sovereignty. Kings or Presidents, it doesn’t matter. But then again I have a warm feeling for Great Britain.

    Healthcare...
When i had my son in 1994, we wrote a $5 check!!! That was it!!! Every well child appointment was $5. Medications were $5.
Now, the Marketplace insurance is income based. If you have a lower income, you get free insurance, if you own your own business and must use the Marketplace insurance you can buy it according to your income.
When i worked my career i had insurance through my employer. Now I'm semi-retired and am an independent contractor. I qualify for my states insurance and I pay nothing for my insurance, nothing for my appointments and most of my medications are nothing. I think one of them is $2. So dont listen to the people complaining about healthcare costs. Yes, there are many instances that costs can become overwhelming (long-term treatments or long-term care and surgeries). Everyone's situation is different, but for the most part we have good healthcare here.
And...if I want an appointment with my primary doctor, I can just call and get an appointment. When I had a torn retina, I got an immediate appointment with my eye doctor, who immediately contacted a specialist, and I was seen within 24 hrs. None of it cost me anything because my insurance covered all of it! Including the follow-up appointments for the next 6 months.

What you said about the food supply is kinda true. You don't HAVE to buy processed foods, which is where all the junk is at. You can go to the fresh produce section and load up on vegetables and fruit whose Nutrition Facts labels state just, "vegetables". You can go to farmers markets and get stuff straight out of the ground if you like. There are options. However you also have to consider how much time you want to make available to cook your food. Most people are busy, which is why at first they find it easy to go through the McDonald's drive thru and then one compromise leads to another until they are morbidly obese. But also I hate the fact that the food supply is deceptive. For instance, our bread contains many more grams of sugar than yours does. This is deceptive marketing and destroying our health. You should be able to grab most anything off the shelves and know it isn't loaded with unhealthy garbage. Why should the grocery store be a minefield of healthy vs. poison for people with finite time leading busy lives??? So America is in need of some serious reforms to be sure. But here's the thing: if you go to a European country, you will also find problems there. For instance Germans complain bitterly about the fact that they can barely move in their country without incurring a fine or needing a permission slip of some kind. They speak of a suffocating environment created by onerous regulations that are well beyond reason. So you see what I mean? Wherever you go will not be perfect. America is not perfect, the UK is not perfect, France is not perfect, etc.

I always have to laugh when I hear people say that the United States has no culture and no history. I think the Native Americans would take exception to the history part and there has certainly been tremendous history since the first landing of English settlers seeking freedom of religion more than 300 years ago. As for culture, America is made up of many cultures, which is why we are referred to as the "melting pot." People from all over the world have sought freedom and prosperity here when they could not get it in their own countries. There is a dominant overall "American" culture but there are many, many subcultures in America, which gives it so much more flavor and texture. No other country in the world has that. What people fail to understand about America is that it is an experiment, an idea founded on personal liberty. Our Constitution is a work of art and genius. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights guarantees those freedoms. We are always moving towards those ideals, sometimes we fail, but we are always moving towards it and most Americans would die to protect it. Those who don't appreciate America are likely to never have been anywhere else to understand what an incredible place it is, both in its natural beauty and diversity of landscape, but in the development of the Republic itself, which is unique in all the world. I also hear a lot of criticism about the American health care system, which I have worked in for the last 36 years and I know to be one of the best in the world in terms of quality and advanced technology. I have worked at one institution with five Nobel Prize Laureats. Why do you think Kings and Queens come here for care? There are many reasons for the cost of our system, not the least of which is the many people who come here, both legally and illegally, to take advantage of the system to receive care and pay nothing for it. They know if they don't have the money to pay, the American tax payer will pay for their care. We do not turn anyone away for care, regardless of their ability to pay. Americans are required to carry health care insurance but many don't, they gamble that they will not need it but when they get sick or injured and can't pay for it, they file bankruptcy and walk away from the bill and once again, the American tax payer picks up that bill as well. People know we do not turn anyone away for care, regardless of their ability to pay, so they show up, demand it and receive it. Another reason is that Americans are not healthy people, they drink, smoke, do drugs, engage in other high risk activities, and have a poor diet. All of those poor decisions drives up cost for everyone. And still another reason is that we are always on the cutting edge of the best technology but it does not come cheap. There are other factors as well but you get the idea as to why the cost of care here is so expensive. Most Americans have health insurance through their employers and pay comparatively little for it, it's a wonderful benefit and gives us access to the very best care possible. I know many Canadians who come to the US for care they can't get in their own country. Their national health care system does not cover basic things like dental, hearing, vision, and the wait times for surgery and imaging is ridiculous, they can die on a waiting list! That does not happen here. So for all the people who criticize the US, who do they call when their country needs money or protection? America, of course. The Americans got drug unwillingly into two world wars and shed their blood to protect the Europeans against the Germans. Afterwards, we rebuilt the countries of Europe and Japan through the Marshall Plan and were never paid back! For any American who criticizes their country, ask them if they have been anywhere else to make a comparison and if they would give up their passport and/or citizenship. I bet you find very few who will because they know it's the golden ticket. Mikey, I hope you love it here. We welcome you and look forward to hearing your adventures in discovering America and eventually becoming an American. You are exactly what our country needs, someone who believes in her promise.

Your idea that pre-European, the US (and the Americas in general) were empty and without civilization needs revision and I hope at some point you'll study it. Have you heard of Cahokia? Cahokia sits on the Mississippi River directly across from modern St. Louis. "Between AD 1050 and 1100, Cahokia's population increased from between 1,400 and 2,800 people to between 10,200 and 15,300 people", an estimate that applies only to a 1.8-square-kilometre (0.69 sq mi) high-density central occupation area. Archaeologists estimate the city's population at between 6,000 and 40,000 at its peak." By some estimates, it was larger than major European cities, and in the early European Middle Ages its culture was probably comparable. Also, of course, in the Southwest the Pueblan culture had substantial cities and the Meso-American cultures of Central and South America had great cities comparable to those of pre-Christian Eurasia. One or more of their pyramids were taller than those of Egypt.

I love how you've submerged yourself in our culture, ideology, and history. You actually understand what America is. You are the kind of immigrant we love. Not unregistered illegals coming from the poorest, degraded, crime ridden, impoverished countries on earth (who aren't inherently bad people) but who see America as a land of infinite wealth in comparison to theirs, that can simply provide and care for anyone who enters its borders for free. America is only sustainably rich because of our endlessly hardworking population. Unfortunately that hardworking population is diminishing and being diluted by others who only live off the wealth we feed into the system. Those of us who collectively provide the means for the welfare system to exist sadly aren't even its primary benefactors. What's even worse is if all these new people we're letting in who live off the government get the right to vote, they're going to vote for whoever promises them the most free benefits (democrats), not the leaders who generally want to improve the lives, prosperity, and conditions of the working class and lessen the governments presence over them (republicans). You'll get a pretty good sense of our politics when you live here at least a year. Just don't listen to the TV too much. ;)
PS. One primary difference between democrats and republicans can be demonstrated with these statements. Democrat ideology is generally based around the statement of "How can we the government help you?" and republican ideology is generally based around the statement "How can we the government help you help yourself?"

I will freely admit that Houston is not my favorite City simply because Houston is so dreaded big. But when all is said and done it still texas. I will say this if you get a mandatory evacuation notice due to a hurricane go at least as far up as Austin preferably a little further like Waco just to be on the safe side. And don't write out hurricanes it's not a smart thing to do. Once again I I welcome you and your lovely fiance. It's a pretty great place to live

Mikey I would advise you to not romanticize the U.S. It's a great country with a rich history (compressed into a relatively short time interval) vast opportunities and of course unparalleled natural beauty but we also have problems and the country is morally divided (i.e. between the conservatives who have them and the left who have no moral center because they are in open combat against reality) and i do not perceive that division will be going away. You're walking into a tumultuous time in America, but then again, it's a tumultuous time in the world, so pick your battles. My recommendation is to keep your options open by getting a dual US-UK citizenship and suspend judgment until you've been hear a while. NO country on this planet is a panacea. In every major city of America, there is a slum where you don't want to go, for example, but there's a bad side of town in every city on the planet is there not? The poor, the criminal element, the drug abusers, the prostitutes, etc. will always be with us. All we can do is try to limit the suffering and maximize the opportunities as much as possible. I highly recommend coming here with marketable skills or acquiring them asap after your arrival. In America, it's easier to get hired & fired which is a double-edged sword but if you have marketable skills then you will have a fine quality of life & standard of living and you will have a lot more options available to you. Finance, Medicine, Engineering, Computer Science, pretty much anything STEM is golden and also if you are skilled in the trades that is also stable lifelong income.

You think the left in America is the one to not acknowledge reality? Sorry but when the rest of the entire world disagrees with you, perhaps you should consider that you're on the wrong side of things. We in the rest of the world consider America's left the centrist or moderate position and in many parts of the world America's left would be considered conservative. America makes the mistake of assuming their idea of a political spectrum is the way it is on the rest of the planet.

My chief concern about your plan is that you'll be disappointed. The US is a modern nation which means it has an intrusive government; not perhaps as intrusive as some in Europe but intrusive nevertheless. Several times you've mentioned a 40% income tax rate and I hate to tell you but in several states, if your income is high enough, the marginal combined state and federal tax rate is at that level. In others, where it's lower or where there is no state income tax, you will face other costs such as high property tax rates and, in some cases, very high property insurance costs (Florida and, I believe, Texas have those issues). Basically there is no free lunch.
Since I'm a retired doctor, let me also opine on health care. I firmly believe America has the best health care in the world but the problem is access. The cutting edge medical centers are in certain cities: Boston; Rochester, Minnesota; San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston . . . the usual roster. But there are places in America where one must drive a hundred or more miles for even rudimentary health care. When I was a medical resident, my teaching program (U. of Florida) sent us to a small town in Florida to work in a clinic it ran because there were no other practicing physicians in 4 adjacent counties there. I have a second home now in a small town in Arizona where the local hospital closed because, during covid, people put off most elective surgeries and treating covid patients was a money loser. Fortunately, we have other hospitals not too far away. And I have excellent insurance: Have had a number of emergency room visits and surgeries myself and none of it cost me a dime. But not everyone is so lucky. If your insurance comes from your employer, it's up to that employer to provide good insurance. Many don't. Even Medicare, the government health insurance for seniors, pays only 80% of "allowable charges" (too complicated to go into here) but most importantly, it doesn't cover drugs unless you buy and pay for additional coverage.
I do agree with those who argue the US pays for things that should be shared with other countries: Mainly, the cost of new drug discovery and development. Many advanced countries do not allow enough in what companies are permitted to charge for drugs to fully cover discovery and development costs, only the cost of production. That means if drug prices weren't unregulated in the US, so that companies can charge enough here to fully cover those discovery and development costs, the planet would not have the pipeline of new drugs it does because discovering them would be unprofitable.

They get their money one way or the other don't they? Texas does have crazy high taxes by other names.
