Lycan - Werewolf. Lichen -basically moss (can also be bioluminescent). So you were kinda correct, but it's a great double in the context. Also, I think he actually hit every 007 movie title that had been released at that point. it's crazy.
The only differences between a werewolf and a lycan is: 1. size, the lycan is usually bigger and much stronger. 2. Transformation ability, Lycans can shift at will regardless of time of day or the phase of the moon whereas werewolves can only shift on the full moon although some lore says they can shift on the 3 full moon days which is like day before, day of, day after. 3. Lycans are usually naturally born with their wolf within them and when they reach a certain age (puberty or older but usually no later that 19) Werewolves are bitten and then if they survive their first shift they become a werewolf, so kinda like a virus with the genetic disposition to survive rather than being strictly a genetic thing.
007 movies quoted: 1. Quantum of Solace - 2. Golden Eye - 3. Thunderball - 4. Diamonds are forever - 5. Die another day (Ren says "Live another day") - 6. Tomorrow never dies - 7. Live and let die - 8. You only live twice - 9. For your eyes only - 10. (?) "See through your eyeballs" is a reference to "A view to a kil" - 11. Moonraker - 12. Skyfall 13. Doctor No 14. Licence to kill - 15. The man with the golden gun - 16. Octopussy - 17. Goldfinger - 18. From Russia with love - 19. On her Majesty secret service - 20. Casino Royale - 21. The world is not enough Ren left out: 1. The spy who loved me - 2. The living daylights - 3. Spectre ("No Time To Die" was released after LM pt2)
Werewolves, which have their origin in English folklore, are human beings that have been changed into humanoid wolves whereas lycans are humanoid wolves. Both the lycan and werewolf possess great superhuman powers, agility, speed, regenerative abilities, coordination, and have excellent tracking abilities.
Oh, thank you Cliff! 1st for the awesome reaction, but also because I thought I was the only one who heard lycan when hearing this the first few times. I wrote a comment about it & was instantly corrected by "a fan" who said he was saying lion. I now hear both. I would not put it past Ren though, who is known & has actually said that he writes music so it is left open ended for the listener to interpret, to have intentionally said this in a way that leaves it up to you as to what word you hear. When I first heard this, I wanted to make sure there were no other meanings for the word lycan so I googled it & found yes, it was a werewolf. But I also found a man by the name of WIlliam Lycan who is an American Philosopher & a retired college professor that has published books on linguistics (still used in many colleges today) as well as many books about the conscious & subconscious mind (which is Ren's wheelhouse). Call me crazy, but Ren is well read & usually does things with a purpose. This may be entirely coincidental, but if so then the world works in very mysterious ways.....Linguistics of a "lycan"....A Man with the last name of Lycan wrote a college textbook about linguistics (Philosophy of Language)??? And right before this bar he talks about word play fetish & alliteration of lines lush like lettuce. I would not be surprised if Ren hasn't read some of his books and incorporated them here, but said it so you can hear both lycan and lion and apply it a hundred different ways. Forget double and triple entendres, I think we have some quadruple entendres going on here! At the very least it has everyone talking and thinking about those bars! I absolutely love Ren and I absolutely love you! ❤❤❤
I am beginning to think that Ren will never stop surprising me. This is a great find, that I wouldn’t put past him at all. I always heard lion in that bar, until Cliff’s reaction. But now reading what you found, Lucan fits so perfectly. Thanks for sharing, I always love when we find out how much more depth there really is in Ren’s lyrics.

Hope everyone is having a great day, find some music you love and listen to it. (edit) Lichens grow slowly but survive the harshest conditions, you can use them to roughly date rocks/gravestones, making history? - maybe reading too deep into a fun song.
Look up all the bond films, pretty sure he mentioned them all bar any that released afterwards. The fact he did that while making it make sense is just brilliant 😂
REN’s ability to write is insane. A rarity that only comes around once in a blue moon. Gotta love this kid…he’s in a lane all to himself..really. And I believe he said, his next album is going to be more rock
5:40. You could be thinking of Lykanthrope, which is a mental disorder in which the sufferer believes that they are a wolf or some other nonhuman animal. Lichen is an composite organism found growing on rocks. Some pronounce it as lykan.
It's the same word just different spelling but yes lycan is werewolf The word "Lycan" is derived from the word "lycanthrope," meaning someone who suffers from lycanthropy; "the professed ability or power of a human being to transform into a wolf, or to gain wolf-like characteristics." From google I believe what they told you is lichen...❤
I personally always heard lion in that bar until Cliffs reaction. I started reading comments and a lot of others heard Lycan as well. One commenter @Christgill1632 left a great comment about something she found that I think you’d like. If you put comments sorted from newest her comment was about 13 hours after yours, if that helps at all.
I love each of these songs for different reasons. For me, the wordplay in this one is amazing! The line about the lobster always makes me think of Mr. Burns from the Simpsons... the way he hunches and rubs his hands together. Love the references and nods. Interesting catch with the Nicki Minaj. I'm not sure I've heard it mentioned before and now that I listen to both, I do hear it a bit in the music there. Great reaction Cliff!
Lycan is an accepted shortening for lycanthrope, but I do think lichen fits Ren's scheme. It's a clever way of saying he's from the streets, i.e. the "lower life forms" of society (it's a Class-based reference).
Indeed, a Lycan (or lycanthrope?) is a werewolf... However, the lyric is actually 'linguistics of of a lion'. I always picture Patience and Fortitude, the marble lions that stand in front of the New York Public Library. I think there's also a kids' book called Library Lions.
Watching your reaction to this fucking slayed me lol. You trying to process and shaking your head and trying to pick up on all the 007 references is indeed gonna shake and stir your brain, any time of day 😂 🤜🤛

'It wasn't me' killed me all the times he said it (is actually a good 00s song tho lol). Lycans are the werewolves in the Underworld movie series.
