No you don’t have to drop the tank but if you aren’t used to working blind it would definitely help.. I just installed this bumper yesterday. The holes he drills using the template are the extra bolts you may be thinking of.
I have a Shiitybuilt soft top on my TJ and the zippers broke on a side window and the rear window in just about 15 months. Of course, they would not do anything about it.
had this bumper on my TJ when i got it. added the tire carrier, absolute junk- never latched and constantly popped open. also can’t use it without body lift with the zerk fitting installed. swapping to the garvin ats. NO clue how you guys got the inner 4 bolts torqued. for the record, smittybilt says you only have to drop the tank for the two interior bolts on the 97 in the instructions for this
Won’t latch. Is literally like 3/4” away from latching. You have to stand on it and force it down to lock in. If daughter needs to get in trunk no way she can latch it back. Not sure what to do
Just been watching a couple of similar installs...Tow rating....practically ZERO...designed more for a bike rack or similar type item...it's a 2 inch hitch. Check out the Extreme Terrain version...called Barricade. That is the one that stated the hitch was not really tow rated....and no drilling needed.
The tire carrier may not be fully seated. I install this bumper yesterday and it was not lining up to lock at all. I stood on the carrier and that made it drop enough to start locking
My 85 cj7 (what are the odds huh) has a custom rear bumper on it already. We just added this spare tire carrier to it today. Had to do some fab work for the pivot and latch mount but I think it will work out great. The bolt pattern on the wheel mount is different for my cj though. Cut the lugs off and welded some new ones in the proper position.

Will this bumper be possible to use on a 85cj7????
I have a TJ since 2001 and I like this rear bumper. It's a very good option. Thanks for sharing.
Can we add a lock to the system??
Cause it seems easy to steal the wheel on this thing!
Thank you for these awsome instals
Whats the solution for the third brake light?
Good video but doesn't the proper install require dropping the fuel tank and adding bolts at the center for towing capacity?

@@michaelcouch75 I ended up dropping the tank. I needed to replace mine anyways
you don't have to drop the tank if you have little girl hands. if you have normal dude hands, you will need to drop the tank.
lot of people saying this one rattles loudly at the lock.
Mine never has , but I also installed the proper bump stop that came with the kit

I have one my main complaint is it hold the tire to high can’t see out the rear window at all and that’s with 16 wheels and 31 tires

yeah I came here to see how they torqued those and of course thats the one thing they didnt show
Do you really need inner bolts? Seems excessive?
I did a frame brace by I think poison spyder instead of
What about the brake light on top or doesn’t need one
I added a extended led one that still is on the tailgate but is high enough over my 33

smittybuilt lists it as class III tow rated.. www.smittybilt.com/product/index/11.htm
I just unpacked this bumper and it is tagged 500 lb tongue weight and 5000 lb gross trailer weight.
I have problems with it locking. It clicks into place but after a few minutes of driving it pops open. Any ideas?

Not working! Have to remove the gas tank and put the bolts on the bumper!!
the hardware they give you is complete shit. plan on a trip to the hardware store to get stronger nuts and bolts.
