WHERE IS THE RETREATING KOUCHI
Ultimate Drill:
47:49 throw at allllll the angles
49:12 check if this kouchi and then 10:30 throw is anywhere else
Extras:
knee strike set up (same purpose as kouchi, but for extreme RvR):
53:50 movement sample
outside stepping uchimata:
38:56 takashi ono and nagase do this. explain theory,
39:35 movement sample: go across, hop and find the angle
japanese technical movement sample:
40:12 movement sample. movement amplifies your power
backward step sequence also good for kouchi (offbalancing, not timing sweep):
36:18 talking step by step.
36:48 movement sample
ken ken RvR:
46:02
why do sukashi's happen?
- stay square to partner
- two stepping patterns
- how to apply to the movement drills?
moriyama uchimata break down
on the mechanics of the throw itself:
- 23:16 - power comes from looseness and the body. 10-20% from the arms
- 20:14 for his uchimata. 25:04 for uchimata example
- 28:31 - loosness in the jacket to not get stuck and still transfer force into uke. use it like jabs and movement as distraction
general tips:
- 6:27 - pattern work: uke needs to do the exact same steps every time. your goal is to learn footwork, hip motion, ability to pull with body and thighs, rather than just arms.
- 8:13 - "you need to be able to do ALL OF YOUR THROWS, and all angles", not just one throw each angle.
- use hands more than meat of body, chest, and footwork. sell him on the movement and get the rhythm.
- 16:14: snap the gi: snap them into off balance, but not so much that they step.
- set up the throws with movement
- need ddifferent footwork, set ups, styles of thr throw to pull it offm .
fun drills:
- start in ken ken uchimata, try to finish
Thanks a bunch mister Stevens. Your videos are top notch.
There is so much things I need to work on ... I always take notes, and set my goals before every practice session. Sometimes it's fruitful, and sometimes not so much, but over the course of 2 years I've made some good progress.
I still cannot do uchi mata though. I'll keep trying, but I suck at it big time. People around me specialize in it, so I know very well the feeling of getting thrown by it. I wish I could do it too.
Hopefuly I'll get there thanks to you.
Matthieu
Amazing stuff. I really enjoy especially the introduction step by step. When we watch the highlights from judo olympians trainings, we see hundreads of Uchi Komis, randoris and hard workout, but we don't see this strategical part of judo game improvment. Thank you so much for this, now it's not the secret knowledge anymore.
The jacket concept is so enlightening .
Hearing Travis respond to the comments will never not be hilarious
Thanks for showing the Japanese seoi nage player opening style uchimata/harai goshi footwork setup. I was slightly bothered all the time thinking how my instructor has taught keeping the chest direction and opening the left foot almost 180° before doing the turn and I was trying to figure out how much I should absorb from this and how much of it to make just a mental note about for later.
That jacket pull was a game changer because I was flexing my wrist and shoulder and also finding I didn’t get enough power. (Yellow belt here so still learning)
Thank you Sensei! I'm all for hane goshi and a lot is clearer now on fixing it.
13:00 Left vs Right setup
Hi from Platon from Georgia
thanks for teaching me how to protect my life
“You’re an egotistical prick, and you should be doing something better with your time.”
Best part, of a great video mate.
27:10 RvR motion in throw
Harai is my favourite throw
Wish this guy coached in California
13:30 LVR
24.10 so important about jacket and tensing up!!!! 210lbs meathead who is always too tense from the grip through the lats. I will use this!
Great remarks about street fighting starts at 44:28
This was awesome! Too bad I was sleeping when it happened, 3AM in Japan D;
Hey you mentioned you did a one-handed Taio, I've been trying to work on that recently, any tips? Specifically getting a reaction so they come forward. In randori I find I grab the sleeve but they become defensive and walk backwards and pin their elbow to their waist (but that might be me pinning it to their waist now that I think about it...)
LOL. Try letting them have your collar and then do it once you break the sleeve free. You could also just practice taping them in the chest to get a reaction. I know Jimmy had a lot of success with that method.
I really love the walking explanation and how to get in the correct line. Explains why my uchi Mata is so awkward while I'm in action.Thank u!
Glad it was helpful!
@@TravisStevensgrapplingthis is going to sound bad but hear me out. I feel judo throws are easy when you have the proper angle, timing, and foot position/foot work. If you use the proper foot work to create kazushi with “the meat of your body” you can get the throw even if your throw isn’t perfect technique simply because your opponent is in such an off balanced and compromised position when you attack. Basics like this are so under rated because it’s not “fun” or flashy. Do you have a instructional DVD that goes in further depth on what you shower in this UA-cam video?
Awesome stuff, love this. Still implementing the principles of judo.
The study of the 8 directions should be day one of judo.but lots of clubs dont practice it.great breakdown of the directions.
It can be over whelming when people first start it's better to just add one and stick to only the four major directions to start. But I do think it's a topic that is not taught enough.
Super helpful! Love all your content, Travis!
Awesome class!! Thank you!
Thanks coach
You're welcome!
Wow!!! Amazing
Thanks Jimmy!
Hi,is there a store to purchase stuff,ie uchikomi bands?
Hi I'm new to the page how does one get on the live seminars?
Amazing video, thank you Travis. Here is my suggestion for the weekly youtube videos. Takedowns/throws from collar tie. Judo throws against wrestlers
Great suggestion!
Also I'd love a live session on ashiwaza to include kouchi, okuri ashi, and Kosoto gari
Thats a great idea!
Thanks this was really helpfull
Glad it helped you!
Interesting..... This video is to my liking. Ciao 👏
Thanks Luca! I'm glad you like the video!
Wow, oh yeah, all the throws at all the angles!! I have a question please. My first judo instructor ( pretty high rank, was the first white man to get black belt at the Kodokan, while serving as an MP during Vietnam) would often tell me, don’t fight for grips, let uki grip you, then take what he gives you and throw him. What do you think about that philosophy? I’ll never forget my first tournament, I was white belt, first match was an Australian aborigine, brown belt. He hit me with a shoulder throw, I threw him with ushiro goshi, ...
that's the art and the philosophy. the sport has made things about attacking.
Awesome sesh! I really enjoyed it. I was following along with my bands a bit 😉 One concept I've been struggling with across the recent vids is when you refer to cutting the angle. Would it be possible to please do a short vid explaining this concept? I know it roughly has to do with getting into position to throw towards the top of the off balance triangle...
What's up Matt! I just add it to the list to shoot this coming weekend!
Awesome! Thanks so much. Super psyched to check out the vid!
15 minutes into the video and you fixed my judo
I'm glad I was able to help!
It´s amazing how much you can learn.
Thanks for the tutorial Travis. It's great. What do you think about Rohskopf-Drysdale situation by the way? Coach thinks that he was right. Its interesting moment especially in the context of your opinion (I'm not sure if I understand it correctly) that the main purpose of coaching is tactics/strategy rather than psychological pushing. Thanks again
What situation is this "Rohskopf-Drysdale situation by the way"

Why do people not incorporate judo throws in wrestling or jiu jitsu?
