The legendary PIXIES recently celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the release of their third LP 'Bossanova.' To celebrate the album that gave us "Velouria" and "Dig For Fire," guitarist Joey Santiago spoke to APTV about the tension in the band during the time of the recording, the "Guys" who make up his playing style and the legacy of the record.

Early 90's, walking down the street in San Francisco, I see a white cassette tape on the sidewalk. It says "Pixies - Bossanova" on it. Of course I pick it up and play it later. It's cued up on the B-Side, and first song out is "Dig For Fire." I'm completely floored. Growin' up on punk, rap, and metal, I'd never heard something like this before. I devour the whole tape, then go on to find every single thing the Pixies ever made. To this day, still definitively my favorite band of all time. But it started with that tape, and that song.
Joey turned into this cynical grumpy old Filipino man though, LMAO. Still a genius guitarist that created so much of the texture that made Pixies a next-level band. Lighten up dude! You're a legend!
ALL of it, its my fave pixies record, but if I had to narrow down to one song it would have to be 'Is She Weird'.
Dig for Fire.
He's only sounding cynical in this one video imo. Hee doesn't generally seem like that, even in other recent appearances. Pauly Shore had a good interview with him.
Bossanova is my absolute favorite Pixies record. It was amazing that they created something so joyful when things were starting the slide for them.
I'm baffled by how these guys made such great songs.
I saw the band play during this period. They were great! A whole bunch a people were singing along to the chorus to "Is She Weird". It was a very exciting evening. December 1990, Bill Graham Civic in SF, the line up was: Primus, Pixies, Jane's Addiction. 😎👽
This was very appreciated. Thank you Mr Santiago for insights on what it is to be a Pixie.
The Happening is one of my favourite songs ever
A Legend here !
I remember going to your concert in Deinze (Belgium) in 1990 having no ticket. Hearing Velouria from outside gave me goosebumps. Managed to get in by the end of the gig for the encore. I've seen you since in Brussels (Forest National), Rock Werchter and New York (Webster Hall). All time favourite band. See you next year in Werchter.
Of all the pixies joey is the funniest 😂
Which is saying something because Frank Black is funny as hell too
He's actually my favorite. He's just a dude that tells you like it is.
Mind you, you have the MOST unlikeliest bona fida ROCKSTAR in Charles (Frank Black) and the Queen Goddess of Rock N Roll, Kim Deal. ( She beats, Joan Jett, Suzie Quattro and Chrissy Hynde who is also from Dayton)
All Over The World is the greatest song ever recorded. Hands down.
I freaking love this song too.
The very end is amazing. Very Neil Youngish as they were influenced by Neil. Winterlong version by the Pixies is great song.
Bossanova fucking rocks amazing LP
proud fi;ipino here bru
Astig yan si kabayan!
I love bossanova
Ana & Havalina , he picked my favorite songs from Bossanova.
Joey is my favourite
Rock Music is a great song.
I've been a fan of the pixies since 88 all the way into they broke up followed by Frank Black solo career then my music taste change or whatever this is the first time I see him Joe speak one of the two words back then. Two best songs of that album...Rock Music.. Blown Away...
I do believe they wanted to go in a different to shake fair weather fans...But I could tell then there was something missing the harmony of playing together with this album it seen force at the time.
They are all Great, every song is a great song, By far my favprite Pixies Album. I cringe with irritation when I'm watching documentaries or I read an article, dismissing BossaNova.,.= I love the entire Pixie body of work, but "SHE'S MY FAVE". My favorite songs are Ana and Velouria.....and Havalina. ( I could keep going until Ive named every song)
Velouria must be one of the greatest video clips of the era.
Thanks J.S.
Santiago in the 90's: Substitute teacher.
Santiago in the 2010's: The underboss of a crime family.
Why do I play guitar?
Joey santiago.
Legend.
The best album of this group. Kim in the photo turned out so beautiful. 👍❤️
simp
the inimitable Joey Santiago
bossanova is my favorite!
While Pixies might have been more in your face on the Pilgrim EP and their two first LP's, I honestly think the band grew better with time.
Charles' tunes just got better and better, and their way of sequencing an album into a homogenic piece of art evolved as well.
I think Bossanova is the second best Pixies release, only outdone by the marvellous Trompe Le Monde.
All of what you stated. Ditto!
"I've got what I call a JESUS ear... it's very very forgiving" 😂 Joey Santiago is hilarious!
best pixies record imo
I like it BUT love surfer Rosa Doolittle and come on pilgrim A LOT more ... Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are TEN outta TEN
how many times does he say "you know"?
The happening is a very distinctive song, and too much overlooked.
Bossanova is hands down my favorite pixies record. I mean Doolittle is okay, trompe le monde is amazing... surfer Rosa has a handful of great songs.
Too many to name a favorite. Maybe Ana or The Happening.
There was the Beatles > Pixies > Where does the baton go?
3:31 That's BS !!!! I just looked it up. The Greeks invented it. In fact, the Philippines were the last to manufacture this toy.
