This should be translated in every spoken language.
There is a Brazilian portuguese version here on UA-cam by Guilherme Briggs, the same guys who dubbed Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story... You can imagine how heavy it is
I guess, Sagan’s book has been translated into many and many languages. But a lot of people still just did not read it :(
There is malayalam also

Maybe if you can translate it in to your own language here or elsewhere, that may help get this more world wide attention.
I was in a miserable mood today , so I decided to use the strongest antidote against petty anger and superficial worries : the soothing voice and the wisdom of Carl Sagan. Always works. Thank you, Carl!
Excatly what happend to me today. ^^
Well, I think it's more of his ability to make you realize you ain't shit that helps.
Same here mate

Same. It always helps to remember we aren’t alone and we are all in this together.
This narration must be recorded in every language in their own accent, so that everyone could understand this deeply 💖🙏 THANKS Carl ❤️
Yes
This video should be translated into all available languages and should be played in all the schools, colleges, universities and specialy in Parliaments for the sake of this beautiful and rare planet.
I don't know if this will help...but a band called nightwish did a song that is based on this..beautiful song❤
"Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot"
This is very relevant today as Russia invades Ukraine.
The hard question is...if you were standing out there, looking down on Earth and seeing what we do to each other. Would you run to save us?
The hard question is how did we get all this on its own? We can't so give the glory to God or just be clueless as Carl was.
@@2fast2block So now the third comment from me. At first i thought you a Troll but you have posted so so many comments abou the same topic that i now think you are serious. You are one of the most hateful human beings i have ever encountered. I am also hateful, I absolutely loathe religious narrow minded Fanatics such as you.
No matter whatever stage you are in life in terms of your health, finance, relationships etc. This speech always gives me perspective and realisation of our insignificance.
Speeches like this never get viral because it takes a while for people to get out of their zone and get this perspective.
Well, this is only planet known to have pizza.
That you know of? Could be a planet out in the cosmos that gives everyone free pizza.
That's a genius comment...
And an even more genius reply
Er... there's a debate wether or not Io on Jupiter is actually a gigantic pizza...

"Ich bin ein Berliner" is nothing compared to these wisest words ever spoken
This should be the motto of a new religion : Humanity

Listen to this while playing "The Blue Planet" - the blue planet soundtrack
This should be a mandatory movie for every student of primary school. This alone would make our world a better place.
Unfortunately it's copyrighted. Somebody wants to make money out of it. That's official.
Living Legend I am doing this for my homework...
Education is already mandatory and quite frankly I think Sagan would agree with Asimov:
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
it should be daily viewing for all politicians and executives.
Looking this up to show my classroom of learners on the first day of school.
"So that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of fraction of a dot"
"Like it or not, the earth is where we make our stand."
i get goose bumps every time i hear that sentence.

The BEST part.
It's so true. Why fight for this spec of dust when it means nothing

I've read that that's a Serbian proverb, but do you happen to know anything more about it? How old is it? What was the original context? And how literally was it meant? I'd love to know, but haven't been able to find any more on it.
If it is in fact ancient it is remarkable for its literal accuracy.
Pretty sure it's just from a song by Moby.
Carl Sagan was as much a philosopher as he was a tireless advocate for science. What an amazing human.
I cry nearly every time I listen to this. It is so beautiful to think about. As a victim of long term abuse, it reminds me not to lash out in return. But instead to open my arms to as many people I can. Let's try to preserve this Pale Blue Dot... and each other.
Dear Jim, Please know that your impact on everyone you meet is profound. You are seen. And your life is NOT defined by those who are unkind to you. I wish you well! Greetings from London: the sun is struggling, and there is a slight chill in the air. Spring is trying! 👋🏼

To say that this has had a significant impact on my life would be a severe understatement. I wish that I had found this speech when I was just a young child, but I am glad that I did find it at 18. This was the greatest way to readjust my perspective on life during 2020 when the world went through a pandemic. I know to never stop savoring every moment on this planet and I hope to follow in Carl Sagan's footsteps and study astrophysics myself.

Same here. The pale blue dot hangs in my home office. It changed the way I look at life. It put things into perspective We are so small.

@@2fast2block Stfu bitch, God is merely a imagination of human.
Funny how Elon Musk read this and missed the fucking point.
Exactly 33 years ago today this iconic image was captured by camera on Voyager 1 on 14/02/1990. God bless Carl Sagan
There are two lines in particular that really stand out for me.
1. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction, of a dot.
2. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image.
Thank you Carl for being such an inspiration.
Never more relevant than now.
#StopPutinsWar #FreeUkraine
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

Carl Sagan "The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be."
Carl Sagan, "I can’t imagine anyone denying the existence of the laws of nature, but I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky."
More from the dumbass, "It’s perfectly possible that the universe is infinitely old and therefore uncaused. In fact, there are detailed cosmological models that hold such a view and that are consistent with everything we know. To my mind, it seems not fully satisfactory to say that there was a first cause. That seems to postpone dealing with the problem rather than solving it. If we say “God” made the universe, then surely the next question is, “Who made God?” If we say “God” was always here, why not say the universe was always here? If we say that the question “Where did God come from?” is too tough for us poor mortals to understand, then why not say that the question of, “Where did the universe come from?” is too tough for us mortals? In what way, exactly, does the God hypothesis advance our knowledge of cosmology? What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?"

Now, Carl the dumbass NEVER can get around these laws and what the lead to...
Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.
....yet the buffoon thinks creation happened naturally, but the idiot says, "What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?" as the crap-for-brains ignores the CLEAR science that creation had to happen by God supernaturally! Still the fool who ignores the laws farted out, "I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky." Notice his mocking God, "man in the sky" as if that makes him look smart as he completely ignores the evidence.
His question, "Who made God?" is as dumb as he is.
So in his way of foolish thinking, if a supernatural creator created the natural realm, then that supernatural creator who created the natural realm with its natural laws has then become also bound by those natural laws the supernatural creator created. So explain why a supernatural creator is also bound by the laws the supernatural creator created. Or, show how smart you are and just give your science for creation happening naturally and don't forget to give your science how the natural laws were created, too. If he wanted to act smart, it may be a good idea to actually show you are.
Sagan the dumbass will at some point face his Maker for his judgment of what he believed in this life. His extreme shame and regret was all his choice. He wanted to be a hypocritical dumbass. @@2fast2block good quotes form Carl Sagan. he truly was brilliant and one of the best teachers weve had in our lifetimes. u know he had like 30 honorary doctorates. if you dont agree with most of the things he teaches, then you dont agree with the last 400 years of the brightest minds on the planet working together to try to figure out whats true about the world. u dont agree with science. its the very arrogance he speaks of. how could you possibly understand more about the universe and its creation than the smartest people of the last 400 yearsall working together.
@@2fast2block I’m assuming your basing your opinion on a religious ideology. “Lake of fire” quote just because you don’t agree with someone based on their beliefs system, doesn’t mean you’re right to mock and belittle someone. The fact is, that we mere humans don’t know if we were created by a spiritual being or we just evolved, the fact is that we don’t truly know. There’s a possibility that a creator of some sort created humanity, earth, and all living things. Yet we live in a vastly imperfect world with many unanswered questions. We didn’t come from nothing, we came from something. What that is exactLy? I don’t know but there’s something magical devine and possibly spiritual wether that’s called a god, a spirit, an alien, or science we evolve and this world 🌎 is just too perfectly created for us humans to survive in it. Yes religions don’t have all the answers, all religions have been created by mankind our of a need to be connected with something higher than ourselves. I choose not believe in religion, but I choose not to deny the possibility of something higher than ourselves. Maybe we’re all godly beings living in a world experience, who knows but there’s something far greater than our own understanding that has to exist simply because it’ll be illogical to think otherwise

@@2fast2block Sounds like Carl Sagan was 100% correct and you're stuck in the Stone Age.
Get with the times, kid. Humanity is leaving religion and seeing it for the lie it is.
Your "god" is simply a pastiche of other pagan faiths thrown together. Jesus, Mithras, Horus all VERY similar stories. Too similar.
We are all we have, all we ever will have, and there is no afterlife, nor a return to this one. Science has proven this.
Think on that. You are wrong, and your pastors LIED TO YOU.

You have been told.
This is by far the best visualization made for that fragment of the book. Even though I prefer the audio quality of the original recording (it's kind of softer), this cleaned-up version suits this video better.
I love the first four chapters of the book (printed or audio), which I think could stand alone as a treatise on our place in the universe. Humbling in the perspective it shows us, but it ends up inspiring us to go on to greater things.
To me this sounds like a newer recording, not just cleaned up. I really love the first one, especially with Vangelis music, everything falls to place with it in such a natural way
I will forever love Dr. Sagan and miss his distinctive and inspiring voice.
I watch this when I'm feeling horribly sad. Went through a hard breakup, and I watch this on repeat to help reset and center myself, just to see how tiny this moment is, in this vast universe.
I am sorry about your breakup. Those hurt. Carl was clueless though in thinking this all came about on its own with NO proof. I turn to God that has all the proof.

@@michaelhall2709 Carl the liar couldn't even get past BASIC science. The 1LofT states that energy can't be created or destroyed, energy can only change forms, energy creation/destruction can't happen naturally. One aspect of the 2LofT shows that the universe is winding down, usable energy is becoming less usable. Creation had to be done supernaturally at some point.
Science deals with what can be observed. The supernatural cannot be observed or measured. It is an assertion! You say “it had to be done supernaturally”. What else could it be, right? That’s an argument from ignorance, it’s a logical fallacy.

Imagine if everyone, especially people in power, held this cosmic perspective of our place in the universe. Surely, our problems would shrink, and the world would be a much better place.

I and my class were watching this and the teacher had given us no indication that this speech was coming.
As this was played in front of us, all of us sat still, mesmerized. After the episode finished, all I remember hearing was the projector's quite hum and seeing the wonder on my classmates' faces.
I truly hope that every person and especially children get to experience this fantastic documentary series once. It transformed my life and given the opportunity, will do the same for many more people.

@@2fast2block I don't think it's right to offend him because you have another opinion. I don't think he called anyone who believes in god or anything else a "dumbass". Of course you can have your own view and opinion, but then say it in a decent way please. How dare you saying things like that just because someone is not sharing your opinion? Somebody who REALLY cares wouldn't go out there and scream around "y'all are fucking ignorant pussies because you .....(don't share my opinion)", right??? Who do you think you are, talking to people like that? It's people like you who are offending others intentionally and on their own initiative! If someone tries to hurt you, defend yourself (or others, of course!), but let the people live their lives just as you want them to let you live yours. And by the way: how are you so sure about being right? Hear me out... me for example... personally, i don't "believe" that there is a god. But i'd never say that i know there isn't. Because i just CAN'T be sure about it. Just as you can't know that there is one. We are humans. We can see, smell, taste, feel and hear. But wait - doesn't it all only happen in our brains? Everything we see...how can we be sure that in reality it looks exactly the way we see it? We can't. Theoretically, everything (EVERYTHING) we have ever seen, heard, etc. could also not be true (or not the only truth). I'm not saying that it isn't, but i'm saying that it's possible. Because everything is possible. We with our modest 5 senses... how can we be sure? We can't. Maybe there IS a god. I cannot know. In my opinion, humans can rely on science the most, because it's based on facts that could have been observed by us, by our modest 5 senses. There are many things that cannot be observed by our senses, although we're still pretty convinced they exist (microwaves for example.. electrons... protons... quarks... oof there are so many), but they could have been proven with logical thinking which we have developed throughout the years (based on the natural laws which we experience every day).
And i have another quick question: how are you sure that it's your "religion" which is right? There are numerous religions and some of them are probably also similar to yours, so how do you know that it's you and only you who is right? As i said, i'm not sure that there isn't a god. All of it is possible. I think one shouldn't think that his opinion is the only right one. I think that people should be more open to other points of view.
The amount of murder and anger and hate all for some stupid small reason like Religion or "Oh, they're different, they're bad!"...

Nice as it would be, more importantly is that we need more people to follow in their footsteps and carry on what they started. We can't get them back, but we can strive to follow their examples and each strive to leave the world a little better place than it was when we arrived.
The problem is those who most need to listen to, and follow the examples of, those men will never do either. It is a cripplingly sad reality that, for many of us, our ideologies have become so entrenched, so a part of our very existences, that we cannot see past them any more than we can see past a brick wall. Yes, we are alone. But we are alone in this together.
That belief--that "the human race is doomed"--can very easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy. It is also very far from being a new notion; in every age, people have said the same thing, but so far, every prediction of it happening (usually in the days of the utterers, or soon afterward) has proved wrong. I take solace in that reassuring statistic. One day, humanity *may* destroy itself (or, like Rome, but on a global scale, may descend into barbarism for one reason or another), but if we just give up and accept it as inevitable, it will be more likely to happen because no one will be working to create a better future.

Every being comes into this world as the center of the universe. We spend our whole lives widening our scope to include everything else that is, if we work hard enough at it.
This is true of you, as well.
This is just as true of our species as it is true for the individuals of our species.
We will grow in time. What other species can you name that has come to know ourselves and the world(s) around us as we have.
We may not be the only game in the universe, but we are the only game in the solar system.
We can be a little cocky, but life itself is the great humbler.
I agree--we may live on a mote of dust, but we can think and reason and discover and question and understand, which is something to be proud of. In his 1965 astronomy education book, "Challenge of the Universe," Dr. J. Allen Hynek wrote to his readers (mostly middle school and high school students) that they need not feel insignificant, knowing that the Earth is just a point in space. He wrote, "In the final analysis, the mind that encompasses the universe is greater than the universe that encompasses the mind."

This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. I would like this played at my funeral! Beautiful piece of writing!
It's up there with the requiem from Rocky Horror.
This is the most beautiful speech I have ever heard. I come back here every now and then, and every time this video brings me to tears.
The visual of the Earth nearly filling the frame, and then slowly receding to nothing but a dot in a sunbeam with the other planets passing by (except Uranus), combined with the soothing music, and Sagan’s mellow narration, really makes this more emotional than it ever could have been in my opinion.
The piano at the end (3:05) with Neptune flying by, literally almost made me shed a tear.

I always come back to this video, from time to time. I remembered it again, now that I see yet another unnecessary war in Ukraine. How many more wars and lost lives will it take for us to figure out how trivial and insignificant we collectively are, and how incredibly lucky we should feel for our chance to share a blinking moment on the pale blue dot?
I just chanced upon this video today..how insignificant are we..
I have a joke that has some truth. In a radio version of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy heard 25 years ago, I seem to remember some entity decided to teach a human how insignificant he was by getting him to open a door that would reveal the infinite size of the Universe. The human opened the door and took a look for a while, then closed the door without having been affected. The reason? The person's ego was bigger.
I always revert back to this poem when the world seems uncertain. It never fails to give me perspective
