Older hollow knight just fits the dark-souls title even more than now but the final product is something I can appreciate just as much
It's not a dark souls game, if it was it would be on the cover or smth
I like to imagine that a lot of that old art is the knight traveling away and eventually back to hallownest seeing what the world really is outside of the Pale king’s influence
this is exactly what I was thinking, it looks similar to the Qural comic
Imagine if Hollow knight stuck to its original art style, and all the bugs looked like actual bugs. That would certainly be interesting.
Just imagine a game where we play as The Knight returning to Hallownest, before picking up his old nail, just exploring the wastelands beyond the Howling Cliffs and discovering more of the outside world. That would be cool.
I love Hollow Knight as is but I may have loved it more if they kept the darker tone from the concepts. I'm big into the grimdark and the gigeresque monster bug thing. My girlfriend probably wouldn't enjoy it as much though, to be fair.
I would love a Hollow Knight open world spin-off based off of this. I fall in love with dark, vague things like this- a place where you *know* something bad happened, and you can only hope it doesn’t reach you too.
It’s a concept I like to explore through poetry.
A forgotten world filled with bodies,
The only living, breathing being, is me.
Tip toe fast, ignore the past, but what if I’m the last? What just crept past?
An empty world, deserted and forgotten. Who was here, and why didn’t anyone stop them?
@@delusionaldonut1326 me too! It just seems much more aligned with what you’re talking about. Excited for the third game!
The knight IS a strange traveller in a wasteland
Not a strange traveler. A prince and a knight, born of god and void, who's ultimate goal is to save the kingdom that raised him by sacrificing himself for eternity
@@EaterOfGeese yes but that means that he is a traveller because he travels around the kingdom upgrading himself, and he just happens to be a prince.
Well not a “prince” per se, more an heir. Hence Hornet’s “Gendered Child” title. And I would say that Hallownest in its current state is a wasteland, though not surreal.
They were not.. Raised. They were literally outcast into a hole filled with their siblings bodies. They were the residue in the process of producing the 'perfect' vessel that turned out to be faulty too. @@EaterOfGeese
I'm just hoping that those old Dark-theme concepts come back in the future games. Not just Silksong, but I genuinely would want a Hollow Knight Franchise Series. I'm just so in love with the game, the lore, the concept,... everything. That I would want any Hollow Knight related products to have that Fresh yet Familiar feeling of the game.
Thank god they didn't go with realistic designs, just imagine what deepnest would look like
if it stayed like that then the second I enter deep nest il find a way to leave
Honestly the music in this game is some of the best music I’ve ever heard all of my time playing games. A lot of indie games are also right up there.
The darker moments in hollow knight aren’t necessarily dark, just surreal. No eyes is probably one of the darkest things I can think of off the top of my head that’s in the current game (except no eye’s original story is darker than it is in game)
The Hollow Knight Boss fight is also actually quite dark. It's not even an actual fight, you just fight him while he also tries to kill himself
The older hollow knight gives me a ghibli vibe, I love it.
Imagine if team cherry was making a mini series of hollow knight lore and how the infection killed all hallownest
The concept art with the big bug with the mask on looks like the bug u see thats holding the void liquid to get shade cloak
god i as much as a love modern hollow knight, i think i also woulda LOVED a more surreal and desolate aesthetic with more emphasis on the grotesque insecty-ness of the characters. i imagine there'd be more focus on the journey/pilgrimage, rather than exploration, which would probably be more linear and wouldnt lend itself to the richly detailed matroidvania-type map as much, but i still think if they'd stuck closer to the original concept they couldve created something equally as special as hollow knight
"There's a few places that are more on the dull side like crossroads and Dirtmouth"
Multiple people are typing...
Damn the first bug really looked so badass tho waiting for my grand grand kids to try silksong
i really hope after hornet knight, they make a game like a prequel to hollow knight, where its more like the original idea, of the knight exploring the world outside hallownest
@@johangabriellomehoc473 ngl i knew it was silksong, i dont have a clue why i said hornet knight but it sounds funny so imma call it that from now on
I would give my leg to play the possible dark version, the reason I keep My arm is so I can play properly
I love how the mask are the only simple thing in the og art style it loooks a lot more dark and eerie
I really want that old version tho
And then there is deepnest
If you want a taste of that more moody athmosphere, and a traveller arriving in a bizarre abandoned land, check out the movie Angel's Egg. It was one of Hollow Knight's inspirations and it's very apparent when you see it. The whole film is up on UA-cam with english subtitles if you're interested
I like the idea of hollow knight could be told like a bed time story
I can really feel the emptiness and darkness when passing through dirtmouth
That second picture gave me chills lol
Honestly im glad they didn't go too dark with it because a lot of Metroidvania does that and on top if that people wouldn't see it as original as it is, the best think about Hollow knight is how everything sets the tone of everything, in other words, the gameplay sets the tone for the nice combat and navigation, the story sets the tone for the world building and exploration and the art direction sets the tone for the atmosphere and immersion, these components works perfectly together and i think a slight change in these can be crucial.
The second picture accualy gives me chills🥶💀
"what could have been"🎶🎶🎶
Tbh the concept art wouldve been such the type for me. Surrealistic vague and a bit more horror-ish but I also am glad with how the game currently is! A bit more cohesive and diverse with the more simplistic artstyle which they have pulled me in deep so well. Great job to the artists honestly, well done
Deepnest is so bright and beautiful
Older hollow knight looks like it was straight up like a horror game
why do I fell like those early designs depict the Ancient civilization that was before hallownest
deep dark Fantasy game
кратко если
Imagine a foggy empty wide space with gray background and quiet sounds of distant creatures while they fly, crawl or walk past you ignoring the insignificant tiny knight, more or less like that concept art?, id personally love jt
I dont even want to imagine what deepnest would be like if this game had been much darker
My favorite place in Hollow Knight gotta be deepnest, all the enemies are so cute ☺️
"What would you say is more important in depts bellow? A companion or a light tp guide your way? Well, why not both? With this lantern you won't have to deal with not being able to see, and the lumafly inside is sure to keep you company"
I only remembered the first half and didn't wanna give up, so I made up the rest
All I want now is the knight before they got to hallownest, the vague idea that something is calling but unable to reach it, discovering massive swaths of empty ground, and towering cities and ruins
Honestly I feel like the knight is still very much a waunder, they seem to exsplore every inch and crack of the hallow nest, uncovering things that were never meant to be uncovered, it also just so happens they are bloodthirsty as all hell and will cut down anything that stands in its path
Forgotten cross roads and dirt mouth r probably intentionally dull
The art looks SO COOL!!! It’s like what it woulda looked like years or centuries ago
i would love a special area purely based off those original concept images, especially with those giant towering stick bugs...
It's pretty funny how the knight character changed from a bug fighter who is trying save his friend without dying of hunger to a stranger in a dead world to a dead bug killing gods.
The game give me so many Castle Crashers vibes because of how the Characters and enemies look like
Man it is so sad that you don’t have more subs
I loved hk soo much
But i wasn't paying much attention to the small background detail until i saw mossbags explanation which blew my mind
An open world game where you traverse a wasteland crawling with enemies and random encounter bosses with checkpoints here and there as you run around in search of the next quest would’ve been pretty cool.
Hollow knight is one of my favorite games! The atmosphere is amazing, the sound design is glorious, the combat is brutal but it always feels great whenever you beat a boss, and the amount of things you can do is astounding! AND ALL MADE BY 3 PEOPLE! 3! It's insane and I LOVE IT.
That first picture looks like a prototype of Millibelle
Like a banker typing on a typewrite
i love all the thoughts around this game ^-^
Every hollow knight lore freak reading the title: well which of the Ten thousands?!
the stick bugs would’ve been so cool
I would love to play a 2nd game of what hollow knight would be I just really wanna play it
these giant mantises would have been soooo cool. i think in general they missed the opportunity for more colossal insects. really the only ones are the worms who are already dead.
Old ghost just looks like he has seen things.
I'm excited for Silksong, because in Hollow knight, Hallownest is a kingdom that has already run its course and is nearly dead. Farloom is a kingdom in it's prime, or at least that's what it seems, meaning more movement and action. I never really paid attention to the stunning backgrounds of hollow knight because there wasn't much movement, but something I loved about the pale court mod was the living background in Hegemall's boss room.
It's a contrast to lush places like the queens gardens as you've said with the older version. With the old version looking more desolate which could have been mixed with a little bit of horror.
I wonder if the void and abyss was a concept here, though it wouldn't surprise me. It would of been cool if this was similar to or was meant to be the ancient civilisation before hollownest that worshipped the void.
The older concepts really remind me of Angels egg
I will love for team cherry to make a game about the travels of the kinght trough the wastelands
I know it will be hard to fit in the story but it will be amazing to know how the knight ended up back in his birthplace
I've been in a state of limbo waiting for silksong please help me
I'd like to think that the first concept art here is what godseeker was inspired from.
That one bug kinda looks like the huntress in silksong
hollow knight atmosphere is top notch
We *NEED* a mod that changes the atmosphere to this!
I like the origonal more as art but the look of the game is perfect.
if the old concept interests you, I recommend checking out Made in Abyss. It starts off a bit slowly but those old images definitely give the same vibe as made in abyss, especially season 2.
The furst aesthethic of hollow knight reminds me of birdbpy and the forgotten children aesthethic, the hopeless dark vibes
I just realized Sheo uses all 3 nail arts in his fight, even though he does them with paint
Holow knight tiene tiene una de las mejores historias que vi en todos mis años jugando videojuegos. También sigo esperando sobre que nos va a dar Silksong sobre la historia de tremenda obra maestra
While I love how the game turned out, I can’t help but wonder how this darker version of the game would have worked. It definitely would’ve fit the theme of a land abandoned by their gods.
Wow
Omg that would've been so cool, I'm a sucker for that type of stuff. I kvoe HK as it is but damn, it could've been even cooler.
A more arty and surreal less combat focused Hollow Knight would have been pretty cool as well but I think I prefer the final result
Older hollow knight seems like it could still work in the context of current game as the knights journey through the desolate wastes.
We need an open world hollow knight game
I want a deep dark hollow knight its both scary and really cool
This is kinda what I think most of the world is supposed to look like, where the Ghost came from
I personally like the newer one better but also looking back I find that the areas the knight was going to walk across seem more mysterious and empty kind of showing that there used to be a kingdom but it collapsed and now your a wanderer lurking across a old destroyed empty kingdom. kind of a cooler astecetic in my opinion
Hollow knight 1.5 should be the old Aesthetic. That would be cool to play
For all you guys wanting this version, just combine deepest with every single area. Yeah, now you hate the idea don't you?
Bring on silksong 🙌
I love Hollow Knight but MAAN I would've loved to see those surreal landscapes in the final version, I'm a sucker for surrealism
The game we got is very coherent with the style and i do like a mix of dark melancholic and goofy, but something surreal made out of hollow knight ideas where the knight is a nobody walking around in an uncomprehendable and uncanny land just itches something in my brain
How dare you call Dirtmouth dull? We've got Elderbug there!
You are so right
Zote the Mighty deserved to be the original protagonist 😢
Feel like this could've been what the player knight could've been doing outside of the kingdom of hollownest
I play hollow knight alot (im sure you can tell) and i think that that old design would be a great design, but i prefer this design. If your a huge fan and your waiting for silksong, like here

Thumbnail bug looks alot like the Godseeker.
This game has a very goth aesthetic and as a goth I love it 🖤
In a universe far far away…
Ok but imagine dung defender’s boss fight with the old realistic aesthetic💀
Honestly having that location with the stickbugs all wandering in the same direction feels so incredibly distopian. Having something like this in the game would have added so much to the overall atmosphere of the game. Also I love the old desing of the knight. The rigid eyeholes gives him the feeling of something unnatural that shouldn’t exist.
My question is why are there chairs in the hive, are these damn bees sitting down?
Wouldnt be much of a surprise honestly, considering you can see plenty of bugs throughout the game sitting down
As much as I love the current mood of the game, I feel like a mix of this darker version and the current version could have created a really cool atmosphere.
Yea I agree prop be more like deepnest
@@Skitozzz not deepnest again
Tbh, something like a more Little Nightmares-y hollow knight sounds really interesting.
Same
Honestly the argument I have here is that this type of thing has been done before. As in the “stray traveler” part that doesn’t really feel original. I feel like what team Cherry did with giving the knight a more dominant role in the story was honestly one of the more brilliantly subtle decisions.
