Jobine Siekman explores JS Bach’s Cello Suite no 6 in D major and new compositions by RCM composers specially written for a five-stringed baroque instrument.
An intriguing addition to the world of stringed instruments, the Piccolo Cello was first used in Baroque music and then re-popularised centuries later by cellist Amaryllis Fleming. An alumna of the RCM and devoted to chamber music, Fleming was the first modern cellist to play Bach’s sixth cello suite as it was originally intended.
The term ‘violoncello piccolo’, features in many of Bach’s cantatas, with the parts written in a variety of clefs, showing the instrument's relatively wide range. We invite you to listen to this five-stringed cello’s inimitable sound, recorded at the RCM for this specially commissioned film.
