CELTA - Mistakes trainees make when asking questions

- Questions are an important part of interaction in the classroom but some questions just aren't helpful. This is the first in a series of mistakes NOT to make on your CELTA teaching practice.

I agree! I feel like I could have got an A even, or at least been less stressed! Apart from the excellent advice, Jo you have such a calming voice! Just what we all need during our Celta.
Useful as always! For me, even 3 years after CELTA it's hard to stop asking 'What does x mean?' As you said, it's like some teaching habits are hard-wired into us lol. Will try to avoid it next week 😁

I'm constantly falling into the trap of asking "Do you understand?" or "Do you have any questions about this?"
I''m bringing my awareness to go for more specifical questions such picking a possibily new vocabulary or sentence and providing them with two options that use language they have already learned. Even so, I still worry if they are understanding.
Checking understanding is one of the most challenging things I had to rethink on my teaching. After 10 years of teaching I had to bring my knowledge to square zero and build my concepts all over again. It's really hard to let go of ineffective teaching habits.
I think that teaching is always a 'work in progress'.... I see it as a good sign to be self aware - maybe when you stop thinking about your teaching, it's time to stop :)

At the beginning u said we shouldn’t ask SS what is this n at the end u did exactly what u said we shouldn’t. I’m confused
She said we shouldn't ask "what does ___ mean?" because to answer this question the student needs to come up with a definition and they might not have the language to do it. This is different from showing an image and asking for the corresponding word.
