Burnelli vs Boeing - One Goes Thermal Bumping

  • Film shows the 4th trim session of the 37" free-flight rubber-powered Burnelli Transport concept aircraft from 1947, along with a flight by the 44" Boeing 306-C. The focus was on both models flying for the first time with recent updates. The Burnelli was having its right circling flight path flipped to going left at launch...which hopefully will be more controlled during the middle of the flight, and thru the transition to the glide. The Boeing is looking to be more spirally stable, and keep the wings level after the power run. Flown in Wawayanda, NY, filmed by Tom Hallman on 6.28.24 with a Canon PowerShot SX20, and iPhones 11 & 14Pro. Music via the talented musicians at ArtList.io, who breathe life into my films.

With it's planar configuration and double rudder, this Burnelli Twin really shows how thermals do so much more than just aiding lift! The DT works beautifully, it's great to see the plane coming back in that realistic and gradated way.
The Boeing Delta is one of my favourite planes I've seen Tom; there's such an air of solidity about that big fuselage, really magical.
Most enjoyable as ever, thank you Sir! 🌟👍

Marvellous, thank you! When I flew rubber, if there was a loud FERTWAAANGG!!, the immediate cry would go up..."Back off one turn!" 😁 These vids are starting the itch again

I'm going to take this up. Zen like. No noise. Thoughtful. And the serene music that just comes from nowhere? I'm in.

Brilliant Tom, I remember thinking it looked like it wanted to go left, so glad you gave it a try... wow what a day and what a fantastic pair of flying wings .

Your videos are so relaxing to watch!! Also love the subjects you model, not the run of the mill stuff. Your craftsmanship is also superb. Can't wait for another video!!

SMOOTH FLIGHT PATTERNS EVEN INTO BUMPY THERMALS... I WISHED THE 306 HAD PICKED UP A LITTLE BIT MORE ALTITUDE THOUGH!😶
BUT YOUR TRIMMINGS ARE JUST PERFECT!🤓👌
    PROPS TO YOU MONSIEUR!!!👏👍😊😎

Great flying airplane! But I have always wondered why more FAC fliers don’t use a tracking system. There are transmitters small enough to be used on birds and bats. Most planes need some ballast anyway, and the model could be built to have an enclosed tracker where the weight would do some good. I did a demo at Geneseo, taped a transmitter to George Bredehoft’s embryo. Wind shifted and it went pretty far into the corn. I had a guy on the antenna who had never used a tracker, while I worked the controls on the receiver. We got the plane and we were out of the corn in about ten minutes. The embryo could not be seen until we got within a couple of feet. The time and effort to build such a gem and trim it out adds up to a lot. Seems silly to just throw all that away if it flies OOS.

    Hi Tom,
The Burnelli sure was getting some air. I think you have it dialed in now. Can't tell if the mods to the Boeing made any improvements. Looking forward to next adventure.

Talking there about maximum turns on the motor, have you witnessed an airframe 'implode' during winding? (hope not!) Loving the vid as always.

Great flights! One question: How is the DT activated? Viscous? Mechanical? Fuse?

The drag of the canopy may create a left turn. Its weight also may favor a left turn. Is the CG off center to the left?

Two of my favourites. Was the Boeing ever built? I know Northrop built many flying wings, including the original blended body Avion-1 which was much more similar to the Burnelli with it's twin tail booms and offset cockpit. I kinda wish you'd have honoured Jack Northrop for his pioneering work in this configuration especially after the tragic loss of the N-9MB in 2019. As a cleaner design, lacking the detached elevons and wing tip rudders, if you were able to make it work, I'm sure it would outperform the Boeing.
