    Dying from going over Max Strain is crazy but also A: EPIC and B: Revivify is only a 3rd level spell, so at a certain point the Talent burning themselves out is a temporary setback. :D

      If i ever get around to dming for a player using this class prolly gonna house rule that if you kill yourself with an ability it supercharges your spell in some cool way (so long as they dont pull revivify shenanigans in which case they can enjoy their lame normal effects)

      I’m always looking for ways to get make death dramatic, or something that the players are in control of. It’s so much more heroic, the fantasy of “I’m going down swinging, trying to save the squad” is huge!

      Max Strain is going to be the name for my fantasy superhero; he lives on the edge.

  • @mcolville
    @mcolville 8 місяців тому +526

    By the way, this idea: that a spellcaster can just...keep casting spells as long as their Endurance holds out, is how a lots of fantasy RPGs handle casting, including at least two official Middle-earth RPGs.
    We think this design brings what you as a player are doing (managing strain) more in line with what your CHARACTER is doing (also managing strain!). As opposed to 5e spellcasters who have never even HEARD of spell slots! I got like 50+ hours in Baldur's Gate 3 and I've NEVER HEARD Gale say "I'm outta SLOTS! I gotta rest to get my SLOTS BACK!"

      I want that soft limit system for regular spellcasters. I'll probably get most of my mileage from this book trying to cannibalize it for a new arcane spellcaster system that none of my players will ever be interested in.

    • @andrewshandle
      @andrewshandle 8 місяців тому +39

      It is funny how completely weird the Vancian system is, especially now that ritual spells and cantrips exist which contradict the system.
      As a 1st level wizard I can cast a Firebolt 600 times an hour and literally be a harbinger of destruction, but can only cast Burning Hands once before telling my party "sorry everyone, but I'm tapped out. I need to study for 8 hours before doing that one again."
      So silly. 😉

    • @Lurklen
      @Lurklen 8 місяців тому +34

      I actually literalized spell slots in my setting. They appear like little coin like scars that fill with a shimmer or glow when a person has enough magic in them to channel it into a spell. When you get new ones you choose or roll on where they appear on your body, and what colour each level is. The glow is faint enough you can't really see it in the light, and even in darkness its not really visible until you cast a spell, in which case there's a flare of energy. Casters can suppress this effect, and try to hide their power, like tensing a muscle. Detect Magic can sense the level of spell a caster can cast, unless they are hiding it behind an illusion or by suppressing it, in the latter case you basically do an opposed roll to see if you can see what they're hiding. The big ones 7th level on appear as halos or motes of flame at the brow or hands.
      Helped me explain it to the players better. Different cultures call them different things. Gates, wards, crowns, or have like a title for different levels "Marks of the humming bird" for 1st level slots, things like that. Levels are sometimes called Risings, or Hosts depending on faction and philosophy. So a wizard might say they have "Three wards of the third Rising." Or a someone might say of a Cleric "She bears a Crown of the Seventh Host!".
      But I also am fine with like mana and spell points and I kind of feel like that makes way more sense for innate casting creatures, or like devils and demons and the like. Powers are cool, and I like strain. Even with a slot system, I kind of which there was more casting checks with cool results. You cast the spell but X happens, kind of thing. Looking forward to The Talent.

    • @AngelicBeatdown
      @AngelicBeatdown 8 місяців тому +4

      @@andrewshandle Well I see it as pretty reasonable, and not "silly" as if it is an oversight. It's a major part of the game that still holds up.
      No need to read my further thoughts but I would like to share:
      You're being intellectually dishonest by saying it is contradictory because when you compare the limits of magical effects most cantrips do compared to levelled spells there is a big jump in effectiveness.
      The intuitive design of spell slots is self-explanatory and I agree with it because it presumes that the PC is still a mortal who cannot simply go on forever taxing their body and mind.
      Cantrips are like warm-ups, it's a very non-taxing form of ejecting magic from your body. Yes, it's so natural to you, you can do it 600 times. Like a bodybuilder curling a 1 lb. dumbbell.
      Rituals require time which makes up for the need to immediately expend magic to cause an effect like most spells require. I can understand how it is just a way to use a LEVELED spell without exhausting yourself because of familiarity with it. To touch on your example: Burning Hands is literally spewing flame from your hands in a concentrated, continuous form for damage naturally higher than firebolt. Yeah, that sounds much more mentally and physically taxing because it's a giant sheet of fire coming from your body that you are trying not to get burned by as you use it as a weapon compared to a small fireball you launch. If you do it over and over, yeah that sounds exhausting...a REST is reasonable for your body and mind to regain the capacity to do the spells. Higher level spells have less spell slots to use for them, and that makes sense because they generally have stronger magical effects compared to cantrips.
      The Talent is basically the exception because you are intentionally trying to exhaust yourself in a almost suicidal manner if you want to be very effective, with a cost, which is cool. It also makes sense for the class that the strain on the corporeal form of the PC is suffering as they overexert themselves using a unique form of psionics magic.

    8:57 “dispel magic doesn’t affect psionics”
    Yay! You just sold me! For me, the table stakes for psionics in D&D are “isn’t magic” and “is way better than magic at mental stuff, but much less versatile in other ways”. Sounds like you’ve nailed both of those.

      I just have a thing in my (non DnD) game that works similar (strain is uncapped, you don't randomly roll to reduce it, it randomly goes down on rests, but basically on sorcerer miscast, it adds the strain to the misscast, with my own wild magic table) and while i don't think it would be that great in general, it was well liked by the player that got to play with it, and liked and hated by the party suffering the misscasts (sometimes the misscasts were even beneficial, summoning a great storm for them to escape with, for example)
      So reddit reviewers be darned :D

    I have a concept for a West Marches campaign where the players are from a small town and discover an anomalous build that presents differently depending on their expectations, but is essentially a mix between Stargate Command, the Federal Bureau of Control and a magic school, from which they can enter alternate worlds. The idea is to allow the group to try different games and systems whilst still advancing their characters meta narrative. In each world their psyche crafts an avatar for their conciousness to occupy, the death of which would have ramifications beyond that setting. Because the players are outsiders I wanted their powers to be personal and slightly different from the natives, with the more connections to places and beings of power manifesting in the real world facilities available to support the players.
    So this new take on powers may just be what I'm looking for.

      The main difference between the 5E Talent and the MCDM Talent (right now) is that the 5E Talent is a Generalist, because the 5E Wizard is a Generalist. But we don't think there ARE any Generalist classes in the MCDM RPG. Basically, we think the Wizard's design is the source of the "Linear Fighters, Quadratic Wizards" problem, so instead we have different classes like the Elementalist and the Summoner. What would, in 5E, be weaksauce, watered-down Wizard subclasses, get to be their own cool thing in our game.
      Which means the Talent is also not a generalist, they're more specialized.

    I am so excited to buy this and use it!
    I’m running a veeery low magic game where no PC is a magic user at all. Having Talents available would provide access to cool stuff without introducing sources of magic.

    I wasn't expecting the comic book super hero style. I'm really excited to try this along side Illrigger and Beast Heart.

    I recently ran a homebrew action-oriented monster: the werewolf packlord. He had a bunch of cool abilities that he could use only few times each, which kept the battle dynamic and interesting because it forced me to do something different every few turns. One ability my players loved was his howl, which had a chance to impose the frightened condition or make the pc lose a bonus action on their next turn. This affected combat hugely, since both the monk and the rogue had to adapt their whole strategy whenever they failed a save

    1:39 You landed square on why I have so many issues with a lot of Starfinder classes... there just aren't existing fantasies that really fit into the archetypes they provide, or are downright misleading as to what sort of fantasy they're trying to represent. Solarion, Nanocyte, Precog, Vanguard, Evolutionist, Witchwarper... they're all so very specific about what they do that it's hard to imagine and be invested in a character idea that fits into those classes... and classes like Nanocyte and Mechanic just don't embody the fantasy that they're trying to sell you effectively, I think.

    Absolutely love systems that do away with spell slots in favor of balancing through mechanics like risk management. Offers much more rewarding player agency and most importantly, never forces you to ration your ability to do cool stuff in the cool fantasy game. Excited about this!

    Just off the cusp of Baldur's Gate 3 was the best time to launch this, when everyone is feeling more generous towards the idea of psionics in D&D.
