I believe when the band commented on this song, they were examining the great doubt Islam's prophet Mohammed was experiencing while he was alone in the cave. When he had the dream about Gabriel the Angel telling him his destiny as a prophet, he doubted himself and thought it might be evil spirits. This song does some very cool interpretive storytelling.
Mike Turner Muhammad had doubts in the religion and beliefs of his people but we was in no doubt that what he saw and experienced in the cave was real.The Meccans ( Muhammad’s people) had a religion which was a aging form of the monotheistic religion of Abraham (a one that existed before Judaism) and it had partially sunk through ages into polytheism and paganism until the day of Muhammad but some features of the original monotheistic religion remained. Muhammad’s first encounter with Gabriel was not described by Muhammad as a dream... he described it and felt it as real. the angels first words to him was a verse of the Quran which orders him to “read” (after the angel) in the name of the lord who created (mankind)....Muhammad (probably in shock) replied back ( i am not someone who knows how to read) . The angel squeezed him until he got tired and then released him and repeated this act 3 times. Muhammad was then able to speak after the angel the rest of the verses until the end of the first sura in Quran. He was then released by the angel to go home. Muhammad when released went home shaking and scared of what he had experienced and saw but it appeared all real to him not a dream.

I agree with you there, but honestly think that a lot of the 'negativity' comes from people deep down knowing they could be putting out stuff like this and like on the first three albums material if they only stuck to this psych/shoegaze sound. So much potential and should be bigger than they are.

Ok, you have the primary Em - D - A chord progression, plodding tempo and same mood but other than that it’s not the same song. John Cope has a lot more going on in the way of harmonic tension and progression and the vocal melody is totally different. In general, Courtney’s influences are obvious but he has always had his own voice and, the similarities notwithstanding, has produced a uniquely creative and prolific body of work. In short, he has confidently and unabashedly taken all his influences and made them his own. Here, the thematic melody played by the guitar, the meandering trumpet and especially the vocal melody set this tune apart. I love Talk Talk and their song but personally I like Courtney’s melody better over these changes (strictly personal preference), and the falsetto on the 13 Tales version is just fucking stellar.

But we still get to enjoy the music, regardless (I mean, you're in here obviously listening to the songs, too...is that just to pick out the "rip-offs" and pass judgement in your omnipotence?) and give credit for creativity where it's due. Also, as I mentioned previously, the Dandys song only borrows the base elements of the Talk Talk song, the latter of which has a more involved chord progression and arrangement. But there are a lot of factors we don't know here. Still, Mr. Taylor-Taylor has had a successful 25-year career as the main songwriter for a popular band on a major label with a dedicated worldwide fan base. I think he's got a bit more talent than...what's the old term...a "rip-off artist." And with that, I'm done here.
