Good evening! Thank you very much to everybody for getting the channel to 2,800 subscribers - do subscribe if you haven't yet, it really helps me out to make more interesting tours, and I have some exciting plans for the near future too :)
Now for some bonus info on Seahouses: we mention around 13:11 about Chathill station, the nearest station to Seahouses. However, the village was once home to its own station, which was the terminus of the North Sunderland Railway, which stopped at North Sunderland and Seahouses on the route from Chathill. It was a short, independent line, but it closed down in 1951, and the stations with it.

      Dr.Beeching's doing, no doubt.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 роки тому

@@popazz1 It seems that the North Sunderland Railway was one of the few lines that actually ended business of its own accord - before Dr. Beeching could get his axe to it I imagine! But maybe he had some part in the closure, he certainly had quite the impact :)

I remember traveling there must have been 10 at the time, and the corrugated building at the platform end was the cinema (roughly where the present day carpark toilet is)

There are lots of amateur travelogues on UA-cam, many of them quite a disappoint. This feature on Seahouses is one of the best I've seen. It's created in a professional manner and, unlike some offerings, give a wealth of information about where one actually is and what the significance of that section is. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Thank you so much! That's so kind of you to say, and I'm really glad that you enjoyed this walk around Seahouses :) There's a lot of history and heritage in the village, some on display for all to see and some that needs a little bit of looking harder to catch - but I'm delighted that you found the information about Seahouses interesting!

I love seahouses, My great uncle murray used to live in a small fisherman’s cottage , he was in a wheel chair as he had lost his legs below the knees. Taught me to paint in the early 1970’s. every time I go back the smell of the sea and the open fires brings me back to being a child.

Coming from the City of Sunderland, I can confirm that the name of 'our Sunderland' is derived from 'sundered land', in our case land 'sundered' or parted from the church. The original Sunderland was on the south side of the river Wear, whilst the church owned the land north of the river in what is known as Monkwearmouth.
Loved the video, and have visited Seahouses many times.

Another well presented and informative video. I could almost smell the smoke house, kippers were a real favourite with me until I reached my 40s/50s. Then almost overnight they became impossible to eat due to the awful heartburn which invariably followed after eating them! Haven't had any in an age. One thing I didn't notice, or rather two, namely litter and graffiti, and how often can we say that? Steadily working my way through your collection. Guisborough next methinks. I had my first proper job interview at Guisborough Hall after leaving school in 1977, as a trainee junior butler no less. I was overwhelmed by the place, being an ordinary Boro lad from working class roots. I wasn't taken on, lol. Ho-hum.

Nice walking tour of Seahouses thank you. Can I make a small correction? While Swallows Fish is based at the site of a very old fish smokery and is a wonderful shop, the home of the kipper was just round the corner. John Woodger's Yard was actually on land between Union Street and Taylor Street, behind Braidcarr Cottage (18 Union Street).

It really is a lovely town - perhaps not quite as grandiose as Bamburgh, but definitely a delight to walk around, and full of heritage like the Grace Darling connection. She may have lived a short life but she certainly hasn't been forgotten up on this part of the coast :)
Thank you so much for watching and for your eagle-eyed perception, I think that was quite the fright I got from the dog bark, strange as I have a dog of my own at home!

I went there about 6 or 7 years ago now... husband and 2 doggies...sad that on a lovely day it's not busier.....

That sounds like a lovely trip! I'm sure the pups had a lovely time by the sea - and I hope you and your husband did too :) Seahouses certainly is a lovely place, but it is often a little calmer than many of the other big destinations on the Northumberland coast - but that only makes it more lovely!
Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!

I know the place well and you're video really made it shine. Can you tell us what recording gear you use ...I thought it might be in the description. Thanks

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - Seahouses is a place that really does shine (especially on such a gorgeous and sunny afternoon!)
As for recording equipment - it's a fairly simple setup, I use a GoPro Hero 8 Black attached to a small hand tripod which I carry around town :)
Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words!

When on your walks my wife would like to see more details of the church’s

Thank you very much for the suggestion! I'll make an effort to put a bit more detail of the churches in videos in future - is there anything specific you or your wife would like to know about churches?

The plaques which include the religious affiliation, e.g., Catholic, CofE, Methodist, etc. Thank you for taking us to these beautiful places.

The mine was never a 'War Mine' and nor was it donated to Seahouses. It is around 20-30 years old an only 'on-loan' to the Seahouses Village Lights.

Oh no! It would appear that my research has let me down a little on that front, but thank you very much for pointing it out :)
Thank you for watching - I do hope you enjoyed the rest of the video!

I attended cub/scout camp in Seahouses, during the early 1960s. The hostel was close to the town centre. Does anyone here know if the hostel is still there, or where exactly it is/was located?

Great walk - however do you stop yourself walking into things?

Ha ha - I can tell you that it's a lot of work keeping your eyes on the cars and lamp posts etc while walking with a camera :) What you didn't see here is that I actually stumbled over a bench on my first attempt at filming Seahouses - all fine though! Maybe I'll release an outtakes video some day!
Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

I visited Seahouses a month ago and must say it is quite a noisy village. We walked along the seashore to Bambourg. This was nice. But kipper is not very good, too much fat and the taste is also not great. I like fish and chips more.

I believe that Craster kippers were sent to London by train, for the Dorchester Hotel. I wonder if there is anybody who can confirm this?

Good evening to you too! I'll certainly put Bournemouth on my list of future videos - though it's certainly a long way from my main area of work in the North :) Look out for the video in the future!

Seahouses has lost its quaint look of the 60's as i remember it as a young boy . My grandad had a caravan on the Seaview , which was completely open with grass and a view to the sea . That has been ruined , it now looks hideous and built up . In fact that whole front part is awful , lost its character and beauty completely forever . . . .

Just come here for a few days. What a dull and nondescript place.
Granted, weather not great so doesn’t help, but this is like a ‘poor mans Cornwall’
Only 2 pubs open... both extortionately expensive and a ghost town after tea time 😑

It is quite a dull place, I have been visiting there for the past 23 years because my grandma lived there. There isn’t much to see and do, but the sea air is a bonus
