Charlie Berens, self renowned Winter Fitness Expert, takes his client, Taylor Calmus aka Dude Dad, through a rigorous winter training routine. As Charlie puts it, no one needs to know how to do 50 sit ups but they do need to have the endurance to shovel, snowblow, and ice fish to survive the winter.
It's the "ope you hit a crack" that's got it for me. I don't know how many shovel handle punches to the gut I've taken this year, but it's a lot.
You are shoveling the wrong way
😂 I can empathize. Been there, done that.
Yeah... u learn young, growing up on a dairy farm, scraping the barn floor, to KEEP THE END OF THE HANDLE AWAY FROM YOUR PIGEON HOLE !!! One time, it took me scary long to be able to breathe again !!
Yeah, any adult impaling him/herself while shoveling just didn't grow up doing it. Start em young enough and their first big surprise is a shovel handle to the face, throat or shoulder. Though you tend to forget, so when you get it down to one or two per year then you'll be like a native.
Or a rock, cause you have an asphalt driveway. It's entertaining if it doesn't happen to you
“Developed by people too stubborn to move somewhere warmer” so true lol
We move somewhere warmer we get hit by hurricanes or wild fires or earthquakes.
Warm states aren't all they're cracked to be. I'm in Texas and miss the seasons. Not the snow from February on though.
@@iwinrar5207 Don't forget about all the dangerous critters there as well.
@@90whatever I’m from florida and I miss the snow from Connecticut, but Connecticut was fucking poor and had crazy ass taxes.
@@youreapoopiepants9278 I assume Indiana gets a good bit of snow. My state of ohio got about 50in last year
"Late April, or early May.. Some years June." So true.
People from more habitable states have no idea how many calories you burn when it's -40° and you're shoveling 3 feet of snow in a huge hurry to get to work.
That statement literally hurts my brain. If there is 3ft of snow you shouldn't be driving!!! And yes I am new cold state from warm and a huge wimp with driving in the snow. Had my first snow storm and literally watched my husband skid up and down the driveway in the car. How,... Why... I was like this is the end we have no food and that dude was like f*** that we are going to town.... Mental
@@stormybadtype1diabetic244 The main roads are kept pretty clear, it's just the long country driveways that need shoveling. I have about a 300 foot stretch myself. 😁🌨☃️❄ it builds character, just like hole digging, rock picking, and manure shoveling.
@@Russo-Delenda-Est lol a ranch man, I like it. Gotta love those rock parties. Yes there will be stooping and lifting but there's pizza! Our drive is about a tenth of a mile. Then upon exiting we slid into a ditch and had to shovel some more... Lovely
The stupidity of my channel name is nothing compared to the stupidity you will feel if you check out my stupid comedy videos. 😀😀😀🙌🙌🙌
@@stormybadtype1diabetic244 Lesson 1 When there is a storm predicted, go to the store the day before. Those bread, milk , and booze aisles don't empty themselves. Don't worry, it will be spring in a few months.
As humourous as it is, this is also pretty on point. And these are actually creative workouts to simulate the garbage we deal with. Lol
"'til late April, early May. Some years June.". Oohhhh yeah😂
I just moved from Texas to northeast Iowa. I never shoveled snow in my life until this winter and I'm here to tell you that it sucks when you hit the crack in the driveway.
From where we're sitting right now, that was a very smart move.
Ohhhh yeah...probably took two-tree times of the shovel handle ta da nads for me to learn not to push like a snow plow when I was a kid
@@loismiller2830 I hope you were able to stay safe and warm. Lotsa great friends down there.
@@loismiller2830 for sure. Usually the travel goes the other way. I bet his buddies aren't calling him crazy anymore! 😂
Cracks are just reminders to manage the angle of the shovel.
Reading that script off the paper turned this ad into a hostage video 😂
The actual legitimacy of this workout routine is blowing my mind lol. This is legit. Winter Chores/Activities Crossfit lol. Charlie u have done it again 😂
This might be Charlie’s funniest one yet! As both a trainer and someone from Wisconsin, every part of this sketch cracks me up!
Hey Charlie. Tell your folks I said hey, and while you're in the gym pushing that Prius remember to keep watching out for deer!
I know yaller gonna laugh at me, but I'm starting to wish I'd taken this course in Texas right about now... :D
Hang in there. Consider this year's storm training for what's to come. Be prepared. Plenty of warm clothes, long underwear, boot socks, below zero sleeping bags, blankets, quilts, and make sure that the larder is full of food that you can eat without heating it. (Canned goods, granola bars, dry cereal, snacks) Don't forget to have an emergency stash of water on hand! If you can install an alternative heat source, do it as soon as possible. (Stand-by generator, portable generator, or a wood-burning fireplace)
"Yaller". I am simply amazed. Not "y'all're". Yaller. That is the most beautiful use of language I have ever seen. I feel like I just saw the next phase of the evolution of English.
😁
Yeah, but you made up for it by saying “yaller”.... that’s the most Texan thing I’ve ever seen on UA-cam.
Yeah. Ima laugh at you
Hahaha.
You forgot the ever fun taking kids to the hill to toboggan exercise.
My favorite is when the tiny one is tired but wants to go down the hill a few more times so you have to carry him.......😓
He doesn’t have kids, so he forgot that one. Just wait. 😊
This one year I was doing snowhill sledding duty and some genius mom shared the hard hot chocolate she had brought in a thermos. Angels exist.

I was at a resort in Duluth two years ago in February. Girl who was working the coffee bar in the hotel had that exact outfit on........leave room for brandy I told her.
"I used to barely be able to scrape a hole in my windshield big enough to see out of. Now I realize that's all you need" oh this is so me. Cheap scraper but expensive blades and antifreeze windshield wash ain't nobody got time for winter when you're late (again) for work!
Now this is functional training
You betcha this was the best gosh dang minute of my life. Thanks dere guy.
How is this so accurate 🤣 I moved to the carribbean from northern MN in december, your videos are really helping with the (small amount of) homesickness. Thanks bud, and tell yer folks I says hi
From a person born and raised in the twin cities, and attending college in Duluth, don't worry! Once a Minnesotan, always a Minnesotan!

Charlie is an Emmy winning journalist, so PSAS and timeliness are in his blood. Along with the brand old fashioneds and fish fries. 😁
@@tinaperez7393 what emmy did he win
The stupidity of my channel name is nothing compared to the stupidity you will feel if you check out my stupid comedy videos. 😀😀😀🙌🙌🙌
@@saxo689 : maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it as I shouldn't be speaking for him or anyone and it's not really relevant here (except that he's always got journalism in his blood - the manitowoc minute being a great example of combining three of his "loves" - "journalism" 😁, comedy and Wisconsin culture.) He is a grad of UW Madison's journalism school and was even invited to and spoke at the grad ceremony of a later class - the videos of the short and long / complete speech is available on his channel - it's actually really good. I think of it often actually - he talks about being skeptical but not cynical. His manitowoc minute character also starts off the speech.
As for the emmy, Charlie paid his dues in broadcast journalism gigs across the country before he grew and switched to comedy. When in broadcast journalism he did a piece that won one of the emmy categories for regional (I think) journalism. Those aren't as famous as the other kinds but they still count. 😁 I don't know which piece it was for or the exact name of the emmy. Those details are probably somewhere on google or maybe his other sites and/or this channel.
I feel an up Nort yogah spring training needs to happen. Tell yer folks I says hi.
“Once is enough, or its child abuse” yeah, yeah tell that to my Asian parents
Don't worry you're not alone my parents didn't know there was a thing called child abuse they thought it was called "active parenting".
Ouch! 😳😫😭
I get the Asian parent aspect, but have you had a (any race) daycare granny? Trust me there is always a slapping object and severe judgment involved. Race is not the issue!
@@pambronson4467 Then maybe the more accurate term is “cultures” perhaps. And speaking only for America, the older generations are more likely to come from the parenting traditions of a swift slap / bop / other forms of corporal discipline. 🧐😳😫
I grew up in the era of beat first - then ask why you did it.
We can relate to that. You fellas are hilarious. Hello from Canada 🇨🇦
An England vlogger stated the other day that winter was basically over and I just looked outside at the 15 inches of snow. And dreamt of when spring will show up in late May.
So true! I lived in Chicago for two years and Wisconsin for four before returning back to Texas. I think my husband or I have done everyone of these exercises except for the gutter hang
'You're gotta get your taxes in' GOLD
I know that this is just for comedy, but I’m going to use this technique tonight to help my son do his physical therapy. This is honestly a genius idea! Thank you!!!
It’s May 27th today - and it was 37 degrees this morning in Duluth, MN when I dropped the kids to school. And all I could think of was ‘April, early May.... some years June’ 😂 #facts
Next video: First Aid 101 - Frozen Tundra Edition. 😂😁♥️💕
@@jamesszczender2907 : you have a point! 😁 But maybe that applies more to permafrost. The phrase "frozen tundra" might actually be more of a colloquialism requiring both words depending on where and how it's used. For instance, Lambeau Field, much less in the dead of winter, cannot really be described as "the Tundra". Only if you say "The Frozen Tundra" will you be using the correct, accepted, and understood terminology.
I’ve lived in Calgary, Alberta for my entire life, and this video had me laughing so hard I was wheezing!! It was so relatable, it hurt 😂😂. Thank you for making a video that I’ll be able to turn to for some laughs in February, when we are deep in the thick of winter, and it seems like it’s never going to end 🥶🌨. I’m going to forward this to everyone I know right now!
My one visit to Calgary I experienced one of those snow squalls from NOWHERE. Jeepers creepers, weather went to complete sh!t in 5 minutes flat. Being a Minnesotan I wasn’t freaked by the snow, but it’s suddenness. Back home the cold front spans the horizon and develops rather leisurely.
@@CorePathway That sounds like Calgary! We have a saying here: “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes” 🤣🤣
This should be an actual thing
Right? It would totally work!
The stupidity of my channel name is nothing compared to the stupidity you will feel if you check out my stupid comedy videos. 😀😀😀🙌🙌🙌
It should be an actual thing. Apparently alot of older gentlemen end up in the hospital after the first big snowfall because they had to bust out the shovels for the first time all year. Gotta keep those back aches and hernias at bay.
@@Serenade2461 That would be from not enough gardening followed by leaf raking I'd say. Building and turning compost heaps could be a more common thing.
It's just a matter of time before Cody calls Charlie. For training.
For my first snow storm after moving from warm state to cold state this is 100% accurate lol. The snow was pretty untill I had to shovel and drive 😣
I like shoveling
you never look at snow the same again after that first driveway
@@CharlieBerens lol I always thought the driveway was scenic and loved that the house was set back from the road....yeah no. I'm buying a snowblower for sure. #thingsadultsgetexcitedabout
@@CharlieBerens even worse I slid into a ditch my first day in a snow storm after shoveling and had to shovel my car out 🥺 I just wanted some beer and ice melt.
If it's cold enough and the snow is still powdery, you can clear it with a leaf blower (within reason). That's how my dad's been touching up the sidewalk and driveway after we get a couple extra inches.
Helping us Texans right now, thanks!
Why is WI called God's country? Because that's where He practices with the weather before sending it to Texas.
As long as the ice hole is aobut 4 square inches you are safe to drive. It will grow as you drive and you defrost does it's thing.
Yeah, just make sure u got your AC on if inside starts fogging up ! I was young and didn't know any better, not being used to winter driving, having grown up working on dairy farm and being homeschooled since 3rd grade... hadn't gone anywhere much in years when I got married and had to drive to the farm. My Camry would fog up rather suddenly, badly and 1st time I nearly panicked, not able to see at all , kept trying to wipe it w my sleeve. Kept getting worse n worse, but I only had to go 1.5 miles, later my husband told me about using the AC for that 😁😁. ... .
PERFECT ENDING!!!!! HAAA
The ending is hilarious! You're awesome.
The muscular / sphincter contractions of merely surviving in -30 is a workout unto itself for cripes sakes 🥶
“The program is working” 😲
The ending: what happened to Taylor?! I only saw Charlie there making his escape. 🤔😲

Starting the snowblower part was so accurate. You just start kicking it for no reason
Monkey brain tried everything it could. Lizard brain demands VENGANCE
I think all texans need to see this!
It's true. It's far too cold and we are not okay 😂
I agree! I'm in Dallas right now, it's brutal for Texas but I have family in Wisconsin and I always got put to work for snow shoveling so I at least have that going for me lol
My son just moved to Texas but growing up in Pittsburgh, he's a pro when it comes to snow.
Midwest: deals with 2 feet of snow every year*
Texas with 3 inches: 🥴
@@sanmarino8605 The houses are not insulated from the cold, they don't have the snow removal equipment and lack experience driving in it. It's been a nightmare with rolling brown outs and freezing pipes.

We had a Prius but it was the only non-AWD vehicle we had. The others were a Suburban, Highlander and RAV-4, so when it snowed, the Prius stayed in the garage until the streets and the driveway were plowed.
Always a good laugh GUARANTEED!
This was so on point Charlie should really offer to teach around the entire Midwest.

One thing I've never heard you mention, and that is good German Wisconsin summer sausage. There's a lot of crappy summer sausage made in Chicago, Cincinnati, and other out of state places. But nothing can compare to the sausages from the Wisconsin Sausage Company made in Sheboygan.
