He compared the black experience with gang life and the life you live later after it disables either physically, lawfully, or mentally. Using samurai as a correlation to us just being factions at war. Him being in blue and his opponent in red. Living after you’ve made so many mistakes and watching your dreams be cut short because of those choices is the television scene. And the ending scene of another red and blue warrior cutting down another life and possible dream is just the recurring cycle of violence that we have in our communities. Really genius anime level type shit
I would feel it more if things like the FBI and CIA elements were exposed. War on drugs and these gangwars were and still are manufacturings of the vested elite and genocidal, propped up to sabotage the likes of the original Black Panthers and the Black power movement, as well as any potential resurgences. I hope Thundercat absorbs a bit more elements like The Coup into their work in the future.

This music brings me a mixed feelings. In that year i lost my father, sad as hell. But when i listen this music on the radio I smile. This sound is my father. I love it
What separates this from other cheesy heartbreak songs is it based on Thundercat grieving over the loss of his friend Mac Miller and its slow tempo really shows the hurt.

Knowing that the video is about losing your passion and that "Show You the Way" music video is a sequel to this is so golden. Our samurai finds peace with his new life.
probably because of the drums, the drums are just one kick on he first beat and a snare on the third beat and the tempo is kinda slow so it seems like long steps
@@1nsgnfgnt there's actually a lot of good shit on tik tok, It's just that people hate them because it's """"cringey""" like bruh, the shit u enjoy might be cringey to other people
This video and the lyrics are the perfect depiction of what it felt like to get Lyme disease and losing my ability to sing professionally. The horrible, physical pain and the emotional pain of losing a God given talent--and having to watch everyone you used to soar and perform with moving on without you. It feels so devastating. But as the follow-up video to this, you have to make peace with your loved ones who seemed insensitive towards you when you were suffering --and find your new identity to find your way back to joy. ❤
I have Lyme disease too! I know exactly what you're talking about. I was never a singer but I was an athlete. My biggest symptom from Lyme disease is exhaustion and headaches. I just don't feel like myself anymore. And the worst part is everyone's judging you for not having energy or not being able to get much done outside of daily tasks to survive. Because it's an invisible illness. I hope you're one of the people who get better after a few years ❤
This song really got to me...ugh I broke down sobbing when I first saw this video. The song alright is beautiful by itself, but to see this man lose his arms while doing the thing he loved most really got to me (even if he did not lose his arms in a katana showdown as a samuri he still lost his arms regardless) This is how life goes...you still have to deal with 'them changes' wondering and reminiscing about what life use to be and what it could be even when you feel helpless at times and it feel like all you can do is day dream your time away...
I loved the song and couldnt get enough of it. After watching the video several times, I couldnt understand it. I think you perfectly explained the concept. Thanks
2:15 - "Now I'm sitting here with a black hole in my chest-a heartless, broken mess". God damn. I've been there too and it's a long, tough climb out of that hole. 💔 😞
The man's painful facial expressions, the girl's sassy attitude, it all shows the pain and the representation so painfully and true. It hurts to think of myself in that position. This music video makes me soo sad😭
the name and the theme are so symbolic. samurai lived by a code, and accepted death by combat as a means of an honorable death.. this man had to accept his life without that, and could not and become complacent, and his family threw him aside. i would love other opinions, but there is a lot of great symbolism here.
You could see this song from many angles like depression or betrayal but also a samurai who lost his arms and now feels usless, i think a person in a situation like this have to find a way to rise out of this and bring a new purpose to his life no matter how hard it may be.
My take with the lyrics and video in mind : Its about falling into depression about something unrelated to your passion, which causes you to lose it unexpectedly. The 1st verse talks about a missing heart (passion for something you were born to do) and I think that's being emulated through the profession of the samurai and the mutilation scene is the theft of his heart. 2nd verse is almost like placing blame on the issues that clouded the samurai's brain (why in the world would I give my heart to you, just to watch you throw it in the trash/now I'm sitting here with a black hole in my chest, a broken heartless mess) the search to find himself is impossible because hes reveling in the fact that he is physically useless to his passion and he is just simply placing the blame on whatever spiraled his drive to find a new purpose down the drain.
I wonder what inspired him to write this? With the video and title in mind it makes me think of a friend betraying or turning their back to someone close. Things change and its not always easy to accept them at first but we must move on.
I remember when this song first came out and I was going through the roughest time of my life the comments were great, only a few all going in deep bout the videos metaphors and stuff. Can't seem to find em now, that was years ago, and I mean YEARS ago if you see the upload date. Now all these comments are infuriating, they're all unfunny unimaginative bait ass comments for hooking in muh thumbs up from molemen. Only reason I'm back is I made an edit to this song using the album version which cuts off earlier than this version. It's on my channel I'd recommend checking it out if you want an alternate music video for this song
Besides God and Jordan Peterson this guy and Tame Impala helped me get my mental health together. I was a broken man now I’m like one of those tea pots that broke and was fixed with gold in the cracks . Thank you 🙏🏾
My favourite part about this video is that it recontextualizes my understanding of the song for the better. I used to view this as a love song- and in a sense, it still sort of is, though it's really a love song about the heartache of personal deterioration physically and, consequentially, emotionally. 'Them Changes', if you will. It leads me to relate even harder to its message given my own health experiences the past couple years, and well above that I imagine it's a beautiful conveyance of the pain that many disabled individuals must experience every day. I'm not disabled, but the empathy it drew from me really brought home its hardest statement while watching. This is definitely one of my favourite music videos.
lol....”how do you KNOW?” you silly goose. Security, reliance, and “knowing” are illusions This song is a toe-tapper. How much time is spent on these pointless discussions is the problem
Ryan Parker showed his most likely son followed the footsteps of his dad to be a fighter and he fought a evil looking dude who stabbed his son and walked out of the door away. or it could be his dreams dying but mine has more evidence idk
Ham Boney thought it was him fighting the guy in the read samurai outfit but when they were younger before they grew up and his friend turned into his enemy
The emotion in this song is unreal. This is the first thing I'm doing with my day, and after this song I feel sort of empty just sitting here. TIME TO GO ON A MUFUCKING HIKE WITH THE HOMIES. I need purpose in this day.
Being a die hard fan of George Duke right up until he passed away, this stuff makes me have fond memories of the man. Thundercat does his legacy justice and then some! Awesome musician! Just incredible! :)
Here's my take: This is about a toxic relationship. The red samurai is his wife. You can tell if you look carefully. The opening scene of him dueling his wife and his wife cutting off both of his arms is very symbolic. One of the things he does in his dream when he has arms again is play the piano. I'm interpreting this as him regretting starting a family with his wife who I would infer is probably emotionally and verbally abusive towards him - he may have sacrificed his dreams and ambition to become a family man for the wrong partner. This abusive attitude exhibited by his wife seems to have been inherited by his daughter too, who shuts off the TV when he requests that she change the channel. The last, most telling shot (to me) was the shot of the gerbil in its glass cage with its little wheel at the end. That's symbolic too. It's symbolic of the guy - who's expected to keep on living, keep on generating income, and basically get treated by his wife like that little gerbil in the cage. Completely helpless and trapped. Pretty fucking depressing if you ask me, awesome song though.
Shit... Like we hear enough about women's problems and I know it's very real and I'm not discriminating... But men can face real problems just like women but because it's not heard of in the news it's very easily overlooked or disregarded as something not so serious...
The lyrics tho…. “Why would I give my heart to you?… just to watch you throw it in the trash.” “Where were you when I needed you the most” I’m sure we all felt that😌
This song gives me hope for the music industry. I just started listening to Thundercat today and all I got to say is this dude is fucking talented and I hope more artists like this dude become popular.
That Saxaphone was just something you can't do on a keyboard or sequencer. We need more live musicians. Even I'm getting really good at piano, even though I still enjoy composing on sequencer. Some things just need to be played live.

Where did it go? Did I leave it in the cold?
So please give it back, cause it's not yours to take!
It must've fell when I lost my mind
Deep in the cut, drowning it in pain
Somebody help cause I can't find my way
Nobody move, nobody move!
Somebody tell me how I'm supposed to feel
When I'm sitting here knowing this ain't real
Why in the world would I give my heart to you?
Just to watch you throw it in the trash
I've been traveling so long, I don't think I can hold on
Where were you when I needed you the most?
Now I'm sitting here with a black hole in my chest
A heartless, broken mess

all this time I thought it was "And I can't find my car"
Wish this song was 8 minutes long and had a crazy sax solo in between.
too true
you're looking for frank zappa brother
or David Bowie
Listen to the night court intro and outro, its not got 8 minutes of content; but its a crazy sax solo with a whole lot of stank on top.
A couple of mates saw one of his live sets and he had a 15 minute version of this song, wents fkn nuts so I heard
Knowing that the video is about losing your passion and that "Show You the Way" music video is a sequel to this is so golden. Our samurai finds peace with his new life.
This has to be the most creative sounding piece of music I've heard in a long time
This song sounds like someone walking around the world with overly long steps
Edit wow so much likes haha thanks
That's disturbingly accurate and specific
Oh my god yes I had that in mind that is super disturbing sometimes when there is telepathy for me tbh
Nesrine Benkhaled haha what the fuck?
It was a tiktok trend
probably because of the drums, the drums are just one kick on he first beat and a snare on the third beat and the tempo is kinda slow so it seems like long steps
As much as tiktok can be annoying, I am thrilled that Thundercat is becoming more popular because of it
When I asked what the songs name was, and someone said them changes-thunder cat; I thought it was gonna be from that one animated show thundercats.

I hope you're one of the people who get better after a few years ❤
Bless you guys. Hope you two are doing well today.

@Nuno Martins that doesn’t mean the bass isn’t sick as fuck
This song really got to me...ugh I broke down sobbing when I first saw this video. The song alright is beautiful by itself, but to see this man lose his arms while doing the thing he loved most really got to me (even if he did not lose his arms in a katana showdown as a samuri he still lost his arms regardless) This is how life goes...you still have to deal with 'them changes' wondering and reminiscing about what life use to be and what it could be even when you feel helpless at times and it feel like all you can do is day dream your time away...
I broke down sobbing to,unfortunately I know all too much how that feels. Your comment described it perfectly.
I loved the song and couldnt get enough of it. After watching the video several times, I couldnt understand it. I think you perfectly explained the concept. Thanks
Hey. Watch Thundercat’s “Show Me The Way”.
2:15 - "Now I'm sitting here with a black hole in my chest-a heartless, broken mess".
God damn. I've been there too and it's a long, tough climb out of that hole. 💔 😞
You can hear Michael McDonald doing the background vocals in that part. Perfection. I think they performed together at Coachella.
Man this song is not just a groovy song to jam to but it’s really depressing when you watch the video and listen to the song together.

The man's painful facial expressions, the girl's sassy attitude, it all shows the pain and the representation so painfully and true. It hurts to think of myself in that position. This music video makes me soo sad😭
Watch part two lol it's healing...still sad though
the name and the theme are so symbolic. samurai lived by a code, and accepted death by combat as a means of an honorable death.. this man had to accept his life without that, and could not and become complacent, and his family threw him aside. i would love other opinions, but there is a lot of great symbolism here.
You could see this song from many angles like depression or betrayal but also a samurai who lost his arms and now feels usless, i think a person in a situation like this have to find a way to rise out of this and bring a new purpose to his life no matter how hard it may be.
take me to sovngarde
My take with the lyrics and video in mind :
Its about falling into depression about something unrelated to your passion, which causes you to lose it unexpectedly.
🙌🏽🙌🏽
I wonder what inspired him to write this? With the video and title in mind it makes me think of a friend betraying or turning their back to someone close. Things change and its not always easy to accept them at first but we must move on.
your comment hits me very personally. no wonder i feel so relatable to the song but i could never find out the real message its trying to tell
its about gang ward and conflict between people
@@internetuser5646 to each his own, its art to interpret, not to define.

Supposedly Mac Miller's favorite song. Still can't believe he's gone
how do you know?
@@tythegodlike Thundercat did an interview not that long ago and told the story how Mac told him that

We all agree that even after years this song is art.
That final image of the 2 young samurai fighting in kitchen with the tree growing out the center.
Its beautiful
Ham Boney I think it represents his son that might of been a victim to violence or some shit
George kush kool. didn't make sense. but that's a good depiction
Ryan Parker showed his most likely son followed the footsteps of his dad to be a fighter and he fought a evil looking dude who stabbed his son and walked out of the door away. or it could be his dreams dying but mine has more evidence idk
Ryan Parker shady looking hoodie guy
Ham Boney thought it was him fighting the guy in the read samurai outfit but when they were younger before they grew up and his friend turned into his enemy
The emotion in this song is unreal. This is the first thing I'm doing with my day, and after this song I feel sort of empty just sitting here. TIME TO GO ON A MUFUCKING HIKE WITH THE HOMIES. I need purpose in this day.
As a 70's baby, I truly appreciate the throwback groove of this song, especially the "Footsteps In The Dark" baseline.
Just now discovered this a few days ago. What a groovy funkadelic wave of sound this is. Brilliant both sonically and lyrically. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Loooove that Isley Brother's drum groove
Also used in "It Was A Good Day - Ice Cube". But i agree, fantastic groove!!
I immediately noticed that. Loooove Thundercat.
Did you know? The Isley Brothers co-wrote this song
lol actually, yah mon
they probably got the co right credit because of the use of the drum break? not because of actually writing something
Being a die hard fan of George Duke right up until he passed away, this stuff makes me have fond memories of the man. Thundercat does his legacy justice and then some! Awesome musician! Just incredible! :)
Dang, CoryxKenshin's backstory really be hittin different tho
FRR THOOO
Why you do him like that that's my guy
then he regrew his arms like a true samurai
LOLLL YESS
SHEEEESH
This song Totally has a late 70s early '80s vibe and I love it
Yes!! The drum part is from The Isley Brothers tune “Footsteps In The Dark”, that’s a great start
My car takes up the whole driveway...and the rest fits in the garage.
Spot on
Shit... Like we hear enough about women's problems and I know it's very real and I'm not discriminating...
But men can face real problems just like women but because it's not heard of in the news it's very easily overlooked or disregarded as something not so serious...
Hell yeah im in the same relationship
naw that other samurai looks white as hell
