I wish HMD engineers would ditch the halo design. Not that it's a bad thing, but what I found on the PSVR is that the halo actually contributes to more weight and heat inside the headset. The reason being is that front pad covers your forehead far too much and doesn't allow heat to dissipate from the top of your head, which is where most of your body heat is vented from. The thing actually warms you up, makes you sweat, and eventually, is a contributing factor in motion sickness. They need to have a lattice work type design so that air can escape from your forehead. Not only would this be lighter, there's no way it would be less comfortable, or even compromise how sturdy it is. Far too many of these manufactuers are basically just taking what works from the most successful headsets and not innovating.

I’m thinking about going from the OG Odyssey to the Rift S because the Odyssey has many technical issues in my experience. Would you consider this an upgrade? Is it worth sacrificing OLED for better controllers and more content (ReVive doesn’t working with WMR now)? I already bought the Quest too so I’d have a lot of saving to do again.
In a way, I guess I got lucky. I built a decent computer, but had some unexpected expenses that tanked my savings for buying the rift, then the supply shortages started. I'm actually fine with the $399 price, since my plan from the beginning was to buy the 3rd sensor, so $350+$60=$410, and this is improved tracking, optics, and resolution over what I would have if I had been able to buy last month like I planned. (I'll take the 10hz hit as a fair trade on not having to upgrade the PC I literally built last month for this purpose) I haven't seen it announced when it is expected to hit retailers, or I missed it... it will probably take me a few months to save up again anyway, so I'm not devastated by the news or gap in supply. My biggest worry was that they were either going to try to hit the Vive standard price range or abandon the PCVR space for mobile with their other product lines.
I'd like to see a Rift version that is a standalone headset like the Quest and also has TPcast built into it so you can use it without wires with your PC. Sounds like a lot of nice improvements though except for the black tones.
the original rift uses quite a bit of supersampling anyway, so i'd suspect that the resolution will allow you to see some finer details, even if they don't up the render resolution any more than it is.
I like my space black in ED so I'll stick with my OG Odyssey for now. Maybe the Quest 2 will come with a removable cable and an SD845, cross my fingers and wait another year.
Thanks Sebastian. Great review and breakdown. Interesting point you raised about reduced god rays but blacks not as good as CV1 and how this might affect Elite D and dark horror titles. Like others have asked I would like your thoughts please on the FOV compared to CV1.
this is what i knew so far: RiftS: no ipd, that settles through software. Quest: small lil ipd adjustment on the left side of the HMD RS: 80hz refresh. Q: 72hz refresh RS & Q: uses the same controllersQ: controller battery is AA, lasted almost 2.5 weeks during my development cycle... i dunno about consumer cycle though RS: HMD weight? Q: lighter than rift/vive/focus, about same weight as acer's WMR & PSVR from what i gather so far:RS & Q will share the same ecosystem, meaning if u buy the game on quest, the same name game will appear in your rift s game library? passthrough+ was called Guardian System in quest, basically you view the world through your HMD in black & white though..Basically you can make a cuppa while still wearing your HMD passthrough+ only activates when u leave your play area
I’ve loved your coverage here at GDC, thank you. I’m a current WMR Dell Visor user and I’ve been looking into getting an oculus model. Your videos have been very helpful and in depth. Now I gotta choose between the rift s and the quest from a streamer’s standpoint. Since it’s tethered and I have a gaming pc I am leaning towards the rift s but the quest is quite enticing
I like the tracking solution, the controllers and certainly the video pass through. But that resolution, that's a real problem. We've had better resolution for over a year now with non-Oculus headsets. If they simply used the Quest displays, I'd absolutely buy it on release even if $200 more expensive. But now I'm looking harder at the Odyssey+ despite the inferior controls and tracking to replace my old Rift as a traveling laptop based headset. Resolution is king for VR, and this just doesn't have that or even come close. I might still grab it over the Odyssey+, but it's not an easy decision like it could have been.
Same render resolution? isn't there some sort of super-sampling-type setting in the Oculus software that can make you change that? I would have hoped that they would have just been talking about the default setting, assuming there is one.
@@dtz1000 Motion sickness and 90hz have NOTHING to do with each other. Hell you can even play in 60hz and be perfectly fine, if you're a VR veteran. Motion sickness is just for VR newbs and those that haven't put a few dozens of hours into it. It becomes overcome with time. I used to have motion sickness after no time at all 2 years ago, and now i could play 4-5 hours straight and come out perfectly fine
How is it reading text by chance? Doing flight sims with the Oculus Rift and reading the dash and gauges is quite hard with the current Rift resolution. Curious if text is sharper on the S, and if so by how much?
Thanks for asking about black levels, I’m too obsessed with true blacks on OLED so I’m sticking to getting Quest even though I’ll miss out on the much higher graphics games of Rift S via PC!
I dont understand why that rep couldn't tell you what the IPD range is on the Rift S and didn't understand his answer. My IPD is around 62. Couple of questions: Black or real Dark scenes, How dark or light is the Greys you are seeing from 1-10 being black? Also how long is the tethered chord to be able to do movements around freely? Also would like to know the FOV and how wide is the high RES center focus area, good as the Rift, better, or worse? Thanks for your initial hands on video review. Still not sold on jumping to this from my Rift 1 headset. Too many concerns to spend $400 to see how good it is. Will still watch more reviews from you and others for more details about this device.
Great coverage. This headset is just coming out. That means I’m guessing the rift 2 will not come out 2-3 years from now so it better be wireless and half dome 150-200 POV with 4K display hopefully.
you can't manually, only digital they said digital limits how much you can alter the IPD so some people won't be able to use headset if their eyes are wide or too close
My only real concern is the eye-box/IPD. Personally I'm smack in the middle of the range so all devices it me, but It would be unfortunate if the Rift S excludes too many people. Regardless of what the guy said, no lens can fit everyone, yet. I've seen people with IPD way outside the reasonable range. I met a woman once with IIRC 48mm IPD, that's a whole centimeter shorter than the Rift minimum IPD. The rest of the compromises I totally understand. They need to deliver good convenient VR at a profit to as many people as possible. That's actually hwta everyone in the VR fields needs. More consumers ASAP, with devices that they don't abandon after a short time.
I believe that S Will be only a Minor percentual, the Quest Will get an huge mass like PS4. And im on It! Because much people means low price and more tittles to come
I see Rift s and division of Rift but a more cheap model. People expect a Better one and think its the 2nd. It isnt. Its like Oculus Go, an lower price than Rift itself. I would compare with an PS4 slim, but lower price than the normal Rift. Its acessible and no need bases but doesnt mean bases can be Better. Also i would compare to PSViTA LCD version
About the confort, I think you only tested it standing up. I'm not sure how comfortable it will be when sitting down with the ring and the button in the back of your hear. Something that still a lot of people do (Elite Dangerous, Car races, Google Earth VR, UA-cam VR, BigScreen, ...).
It seems many of their design choices were made to lower manufacturing costs. That's fine if you are trying to attract people new to VR. For me, the single LCD panel with digital IPD adjustment is a big negative because my IPD is at the lower end of the range and I'm afraid it wouldn't work well for me.
Rift S won't sell that much, it is a transition product until the real Rift 2 (PCVR) ready. Wireless, OLED, 140 FOV, higer resolution, hand tracking, etc ...
$399 is at least *half* of the *release* price for a combination of the CV1 and the touch controllers combined (3rd camera not included) ... or the Vive for that matter. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll keep coming down eventually.
The Oculus rep seems confused about the render resolution. It’s not the same as Rift, but the performance requirements are supposed to be similar (“almost a wash”) because of the change from 90fps to 80fps.
Every single technical question that Seb asked had a pretty "cop-out" answer. It's basically marketing answers because they literally downgraded almost everything. The only cool thing seems to be the 5-camera tracking system.
Thanks Sebastian for asking the hard questions like black levels and getting them to verify it's using parts from the cheaper Go. Made them a little uncomfortable maybe but we know the truth. With inferior tracking (behind the head stuff for lone echo etc. will likely suck) worse black levels, and 80hz refresh rate, it's very clear that market share is their main and possibly only priority -- not quality
The IPD “it should cover everybody” (no not according to Nate) and they won’t release specs... so its better for someone that can’t use this to buy it, then request a refund when they can’t obtain focus? wow. I’ve heard of cutting corners, but..
render resolution is the same as Rift? That's how they kept the same requirement specs? Because 10hz drop was not enough imo. I hope there's a way to render at 1440p
The latest news is theyve listened to all the complaints and just announced the Rift S+ . It's got 1,440 x 1,600 per eye, OLED, 120 FOV, built in ear phones, all for $449! ;)
I love how they won't even specify what they think the ipd range is. He said it should work fir everybody...but that's not true as other interviews and coverage have said it could be an issue for some people, but that most would be ok. This is not something I'm enjoying them being coy about. Overall, after his final comments, I think this headset is really nice, but I don't think I'll upgrade from rift. I love my rift and tracking, and might buy a quest, but only for active games like thrill of the fight, so if we don't get that...I'm in a pickle. I don't think I need the quest for demoing or travel tight now.
i think they should make if possible a non pen tile OLED instead of a LCD because the psvr was a non pen tile display and people said it was great despite the lower res
Only Samsung, LG and Sony have large production capacity of micro Oled panels to my knowledge. If anyone will come out with high res micro rgb oled panel it will be one of them.
I really like Oculus products. They have not only become the best quality for VR headsets but also at the lowest price. I cant see Vive lasting much longer unless they cut the price of their headsets by 50% or more. Well I will be getting a few Oculus Rift S headsets and 3 or 4 Oculus Quest ones. Cant wait.
One problem that I'm thinking with the assessment of tracking is that it can not be as good as having base stations that has site of the controllers whereabouts. Sure there is the time delay that is allowed to bring the controllers back in focus, which is still good. But as has been proven already by some reviews, from what I can tell you cannot hide the controllers behind the back out of site of the cameras. But, all in all I think inside out tracking is the better option depending on where and how, use.
I read somewhere that Rift S is fully compatible with Oculus Home and all Rift games. However, given the disappointing spec of the S I think I'll wait to see how HP Reverb (twice resolution, 115 FOV) works out with ReVive!
I wish Oculus would just offer a VR cover like solution for all the padding. They better not have that same foam on the front & rear head rests because then you would have to buy multiple inserts to not sweaty the thing up. Especially in warmer climates they are going to be a places to collect a lot of germs unless they have a pleather solution. At least with the Rift you just had to replace the facial interface now we have to replace three areas 😡.
Pardon me while I put on my tin-foil hat for a bit. =) Why are they 'upgrading' the Rift with Oculus Go panels? Theory: I believe Oculus overestimated how successful the Oculus Go would be, so now they're sitting on a ton of panels that won't get used because they are releasing the Oculus Quest which in many ways is the successor of the Go. So how can they get rid of all of these Go panels? Put them in the Rift S and call it an 'upgrade'. Seems like us PCVR users here are getting the short end of the stick. I'd kill for a Rift S with Quest panels in it. But they gotta get rid of their stock pile of Go panels somehow, right? Am I crazy for thinking this?
Hmmm I’ve had a Vive for two years which I like, but was looking to get a second hmd, my issue with rift was the tracking set up, but maybe this is an option. Although I can’t believe it’s not wireless wtf. After having wireless Vive going back to a cable rapping around my feet again feel like a downgrade
STEAM, STEAM, STEAM, VALVE come on Abe lets see what you have made for us VR enthusiasts. FOV was smaller. From OLED to LCD. 90 to 80hz. Bump in rez. High end, I don't think so this was just a refresh. You'll have to wait another 3 years for another step up. But be warned it may be another infant step
Coming from a mixed reality user, inside out tracking has it's own issues that would make it annoying for professional settings, like the controllers not being positionally tracked while out of the cameras fov
I love how everyone who works for Oculus marketing seems to know less about the headset than me or any of the reviewers.. if that were my job I’d know every fucking detail and tech spec..
Instead of this downgrade,if they made a rift 2 with better lenses and a much higher resolution and offered a headset only option for cheaper for people that already own a rift that would be perfect for me.The guy couldn’t answer why they use lcd and it has worse blacks just babbling a load of bullshit. Also the current rift headphones are bloody brilliant, one of the best things about it so they got rid of them, all for cheapness and max profits Grrrr. The tracking will be worse for sure, try it in the dark and try games like Robo recall plus I play a lot of racing games and 90hz is bare minimum, would prefer 120hz.This is why so many people get motion sick.
Totally disappointed, i expected a little more. And Lcd. I love my Vive and i thought this would have brought me over to Oculus. I guess ill wait and see what else will happen in the future of VR. Hopefully the Vive Cosmos is more impressive.
I feel Oculus did a Blizzard. This is their Diablo Immortal. This Rift is not what most Rift fans want to replace their already beloved headset. Thank you, Sebastian, for asking them about the black levels. I feel most are too 'humble' to confront them about that.

Quest 2? That will be like 5 years away minimum. By then 845 will be ancient
@@ge2719 No, the VR evolution is speeding up exponentially, so probably sooner than my prediction :)
They need to increase the FOV. For me that is the biggest thing that needs to happen. I want the VR world to fill my vision.
Thanks Sebastian. Great review and breakdown. Interesting point you raised about reduced god rays but blacks not as good as CV1 and how this might affect Elite D and dark horror titles. Like others have asked I would like your thoughts please on the FOV compared to CV1.
FOV is slightly higher than CV1. Like Vive.
this is what i knew so far:
RiftS: no ipd, that settles through software.
Quest: small lil ipd adjustment on the left side of the HMD
RS: 80hz refresh.
Q: 72hz refresh
RS & Q: uses the same controllersQ: controller battery is AA, lasted almost 2.5 weeks during my development cycle... i dunno about consumer cycle though
RS: HMD weight?
Q: lighter than rift/vive/focus, about same weight as acer's WMR & PSVR
from what i gather so far:RS & Q will share the same ecosystem, meaning if u buy the game on quest, the same name game will appear in your rift s game library?
passthrough+ was called Guardian System in quest, basically you view the world through your HMD in black & white though..Basically you can make a cuppa while still wearing your HMD
passthrough+ only activates when u leave your play area
Actually it's heavier then of rift even with its no headphones audio strap. Another fail for rift s
Dont buy rift s just do not buy it
How is the quest?
What’s the FOV?
Field of view
Oculus executives said 80 Hertz was to keep the recommended spec to use the device the same even with higher resolution
@capote5000 I wonder what that is going to do for motion sickness
@@dtz1000 people who tried it seemed to say it felt pretty much the same
@@dtz1000 Motion sickness and 90hz have NOTHING to do with each other.
Help! im saving for a Samsung Odyssey mainly for DCS and shooter. Should i wait for the Oculus Rift S or Samsung for the win? e.e
One word: disappointed.
sponge720 I did an impression video this morning and I used the exact same word.
Kaizen I was not even hoping for the rift 2, just the quest for PC would have be perfect for now. I need IPD adjustment...
@@Somtric I'm not sure 😔
i don't have a vr yet, but the rift S is the most friendly for new users ( who have a nice pc ).
How is it reading text by chance? Doing flight sims with the Oculus Rift and reading the dash and gauges is quite hard with the current Rift resolution. Curious if text is sharper on the S, and if so by how much?
Are you sure the resolution is the same as the original Oculus Rift? Everything else ive heard contradicts that statement.
Will it also work with base stations for superior tracking? That would be awesome to be able to use both.
Great coverage. This headset is just coming out. That means I’m guessing the rift 2 will not come out 2-3 years from now so it better be wireless and half dome 150-200 POV with 4K display hopefully.
What about comparing with VIVE or VIVE PRO? in terms of FOV and visual?
I also am interested in a comparison. I've never used a rift
Its worse. Of course.
What about adjusting the lenses?
you can't manually, only digital they said digital limits how much you can alter the IPD so some people won't be able to use headset if their eyes are wide or too close
Thats gone. They think you should adjust with your eyes. Until they fall out
Mike !
how FAST were the responses ? are the 5 cameas and tracking really as fast as the light waves from the rift ?
You didn't really discuss the resolution / image quality vs the competition, most notably the Odyssey +. How does it compare?
Also i would compare to PSViTA LCD version
they upgraded their profit margin
About the confort, I think you only tested it standing up. I'm not sure how comfortable it will be when sitting down with the ring and the button in the back of your hear. Something that still a lot of people do (Elite Dangerous, Car races, Google Earth VR, UA-cam VR, BigScreen, ...).
Wheres the Quest reviews? Did they not have it there?
I would pay extra for an OLED version as I use my HMD to display my 360 photography. Big fail for Oculus.
Well people would already be paying extra for an lcd if they buy this.
How to connect the motion controller? did it build in BT like "Odyssey plus" or you need to connect the motion controller to PC BT?
What is the microphone quality on the mic on the Rift S, and it has an audio jack right?
Nice one Seb
It seems many of their design choices were made to lower manufacturing costs. That's fine if you are trying to attract people new to VR. For me, the single LCD panel with digital IPD adjustment is a big negative because my IPD is at the lower end of the range and I'm afraid it wouldn't work well for me.
Rift S won't sell that much, it is a transition product until the real Rift 2 (PCVR) ready. Wireless, OLED, 140 FOV, higer resolution, hand tracking, etc ...
most likely the rift 2 will never arrive
Oculus Quest for me.
Oculus rift s or samsung odyssey plus which is better
The tracking being supposedly as good as rift is the most impressive thing about this device. Not a device for existing rift owners imo
I hope there's a way to render at 1440p
can it still run steamVR??
it's their pc headset u can see the cable runs the same stuff as the old rift
I was a bit excited... But LCD?
How was the fov compared to the quest and rift cv1?
Does it have a built in microphone?
Papias yes, the little hole at the bottom of the rift is the mic
The latest news is theyve listened to all the complaints and just announced the Rift S+ . It's got 1,440 x 1,600 per eye, OLED, 120 FOV, built in ear phones, all for $449! ;)
That will probably end up being the CV2, if it ever see's the light of day!
LOL
Is that Garmin vívoactive 3 on your wrist?
Cant wait.
sounds really good! Would you say that the tracking is better than the Samsung odyssey?
It has 5 cams, it has to be...but the screen
@@MrPXOMan yeah I can't help but think that LCD seems too old tech to be putting in a VR head set?
it has 3 more cameras , so it covers for sure more space to track.
I wonder why noone is asking if all games/apps (also the Steam ones) are compatible right out of the box or is an update for eachgame/app needed?
Why are they 'upgrading' the Rift with Oculus Go panels?
Theory: I believe Oculus overestimated how successful the Oculus Go would be, so now they're sitting on a ton of panels that won't get used because they are releasing the Oculus Quest which in many ways is the successor of the Go. So how can they get rid of all of these Go panels? Put them in the Rift S and call it an 'upgrade'. Seems like us PCVR users here are getting the short end of the stick. I'd kill for a Rift S with Quest panels in it. But they gotta get rid of their stock pile of Go panels somehow, right?
Am I crazy for thinking this?
The only possible logical explanation. And they've brought in Lenovo as producer because it has rights to copy Sonys' PSVR ring design.
does it have their inside out tracking?
Its a shame we had to settle on the 80hz lcd panel. Its an amazing panel for the go. But i expected 90 hz oled.
The rep was so close to revealing the actual IPD range...
While im excited for these changes I wish the quality of games moved/caught up as fast as the hardware improvements. Kinda tired of the shovelware.
That depends on the next improvements in the pc world which didn't happen yet.
is the FoV like Rift? or is it closer to the FoV of the Oculus Go?
Less than rift according to VoodooDE
But be warned it may be another infant step
lol I'm mad I spent 800 dollars on a rift in Jan 2017...
for professional users, like fast action (echo arena, fps, etc) is the tracking good enough?
Coming from a mixed reality user, inside out tracking has it's own issues that would make it annoying for professional settings, like the controllers not being positionally tracked while out of the cameras fov
You'll likely have some issues if you hold onto environmental elements behind your back a lot on Echo. Throwing should be fine.
I did too.. They did give me a $200 credit to buy games after the price drop.. I want FOV.. Until then I will be keeping my money..
Lower res than Vive Pro/Odyssey.
mamefan the vive Pro costs $1400 dipshit
Oculus already has us as PCVR gamer. Rift S is meant to bring new user to PCVR and get more people for the launch of RIFT 2.
Why is this the same price as the quest?
I will get the Quest and the Rift S instead of buying the Pimax 5K + without the base station with the same price
Is the FOV the same as the original rift?
Worse according to VodooDE
tl;dr: For high end VR experience go with HTC Vive's line up. For more normie lower quality more portable/convenient go with Oculus's line up.
Good review..I wont be upgrading theres no point really. I'm just going to keep the rift untill they come out with a major improvement!
Think if my rift dies I'll get this at best buy try it then if the blacks suck then i will go with the hp one
I love how everyone who works for Oculus marketing seems to know less about the headset than me or any of the reviewers.. if that were my job I’d know every fucking detail and tech spec..
If it's not rendering more pixels, then there's no need for 80 Hz. Someone is lying or just wrong.
I will get the Quest and that's probably it.
I have a high end gaming computer but am thinking quest.
Just as I expected, went to amazon.ca to check the price on Lenovo explorer for fun. Went from $191 about 1 month ago to now, $373, so much for Lenovo being the cheaper choice in VR headsets lol.
James Fralic that’s Amazon market prices typically that jump around like that. Hi, from Canada also ;)

@@TEKDAD Yeah before I got my O+ I was watching Lenovo explorer prices daily. That's a hell of a jump in price if you ask me. Nothing really changed in the market except demand went up for hmds.
