Some of the best advice I ever got was, "You're not hardcore just because you wake up early to spike your hair." A torn-up vest and jeans hanging on by a thread doesn't make you punk rock. The clothes you wear don't make art. You really want to be a punk, treat everyone with kindness and respect even when the world doesn't give it back to you, because punks are actually nice people pretending to be mean.

We used to have punkers at my high school twenty years ago. They were anybody's friend and took art and music pretty seriously. Some were very real about it and associated with no one except other artists. It was a fashion but a belief system.

Depends on where you live, and what you're looking for. I live in Louisville KY and we have a thriving Punk/DIY Music Scene. Some ppl like doing the battle jacket and crust pants or goth looks, but a lot of ppl just dress normal/in current trends like Frankie mentioned. The younger kids who keep joining like to dress up but not usually in the 70s/80s punk aesthetic. Doc martins are still popular tho lol The bands here have a wide variety of subgenres but if you ask me punk is more than anything about the DIY aspect, making art just to make it, and a pro working class/anti oppression attitude. Moshing is fun too.

1:47 I got stopped by the police with some of my best mates a few years back. I'd stopped dressing punky years ago but my mates were still in the full on leathers and spikey hair. One of the cops said to me "Compared to them you look like a Young Conservative." That still makes me smile 😉
