It’s not just age, the party’s continued leadership by centrists and center right politicians has been a failure and led to Donald Trump and shown itself to be unable to fight him with Trumps reelection. People are craving change and a populist message and Democrats are refusing to offer a left wing version of that.
Uh, no. We need to stay centrist so that these people who think they like the populist BS now will have a sane adult party to come back to when it goes south or they're just sick of lies. It would really help too if we distanced ourselves from all the identity crap too.

To get a majority you'd need to compromise that number. At least if you make it 80 the parties will strategically shy away from people who get closer to that deadline.

This is so disappointing. Some Democrats still don't have a handle on where America is at this moment. The Oversight Committee needs someone with lots of stamina and who can take on the fight of their lives. Connolly is not that person. These Democrats wonder why people have no confidence in government yet cannot look in the mirror and see that the "old guard" way of doing things no longer cuts it at this moment.

@@jonnyfendi2003 No, we lost the election because Harris abandoned her already middling progressive campaign promises and veered straight for more centrist bs. As a Republican I must say Chris Hayes makes a lot of sense here. On our side, Mitch McConnell is among several GOPers who need to retire now! Time to let the younger voices be heard.
I would be okay with 75, but overall agree. There has to be a mandatory retirement age for all federal and state level officials. You can start training the next in line for a couple of years before retirement. No one is saying that a senior citizen can't still be a good mentor, but age and health do matter. Plus, at some point, you would think they would want to spend time with their families and be there to enjoy time with their grandkids and great grandchildren. Stuff like that. If they still want to be involved in politics, a mentorship type of role would be fine. They just need to get new blood into the system so that the future is protected as well. As for term limits, I agree. To a point. I think if you want to run for a different office, you still can. Like, say you get elected like AOC did at a young age. She is just now 35. So if she spent 3 terms more in the house and 2-3 in the Senate and then ran for president, I wouldn't take issue with that. Still would only be in her late 50's or early 60's by that point.
@@10Centaur Most businesses in the corporate world have a mandatory retirement age. Schools often have them. Most government offices have them. Police departments have them. It isn't always about age discrimination. Sometimes it is about the safety of the people. Sometimes it is about making sure you can physically handle the job. Sometimes you have to have some rules to protect people from themselves. Especially once you hit your mid 70's, your body just starts to have even more trouble than it does in your 40's and 50's. As I said though, I wouldn't have an issue if they took on a mentorship role. There are always things they can teach the younger generations how to do. Help them learn the rules of etiquette, learn how to properly write a bill, stuff like that. Especially in someone's first term. There just needs to be some guardrails to make sure that people aren't as likely to die while in office.

Many have to go but need competency to step in. 🤝🇺🇲
They have to begin leading by example. Setting an example: term and age limits for all their elected members. Money limits for all their campaigns, especially primaries. Term limits of 12 years for all offices. Age limits of 70 for all. Exceptions could be made for those starting late -- but this would have to follow a formula that takes into account an upper limit for age, perhaps 75 at the time the term ends. Make it a rule, make it begin today. Bernie: this is your last term, do good.

New Yorkers probably like her but don't assume she is well liked all over the country. And what are her qualifications to be the chair of this committee?
She's been on the committee for years and was the second ranking member for that committee in the previous congress. She definitely understands the job
Brother Clyburn suggested President Joe Biden, his dear friend, should pardon Donald Trump, "Pardon Donald Trump, for a clean slate for the sake of the country." Think about his disregard towards Vice President Kamala Harris during the campaign, his use of vulgarity against Stephanie Ruhle, saving his hardest and most racists attacks against Black women! "No way jay."
Hayes is conflating different issues here and is simply wrong. The only one that was truly about age was RBG. Biden was the sitting President. Could he have been forced out before the debate? I don't think so. And making AOC the head of the oversight committee would of hurt the party more than helped it. AOC will have to moderate her tone for another 10 years before voters believe it true.
I absolutely love AOC, and her tenacity, her intelligence and common sense. I have no doubt she will accomplish great things and do great things for this nation. I feel it may be premature to give her the near highest position in her party. Her time for party leadership will come. Her time for Speaker of the House will come. And more. Put some more time in where you are and continue to learn and to lead. You have plenty of time to accomplish these great things that you will.
I live in California. I knew Dianne Feinstein was getting older, and that she was planning to retire after just one more last term. She was a senator, we elected her not only for her to represent us, but for her savvy and intelligence. I respected that Ms.Feinstein would know if she could physically and mentally handle one last term. After she passed away during her last term, there were horror stories about how her party harangued her into staying so as not to lose a seat and use her as a rubber stamp. As her health declined, her team handled all the work, and just had her sign the papers. We will never know what she was thinking and how she was feeling in her final days, but she had served California for decades, she deserved her rest. They are real people, as frail and fallible as the rest of us. Just like all these BS performative shows that our elected officials put on for the cameras in chambers so they can clip it for their party's culture war show reel, how much of this is for ego, for "legacy"? How much is genuinely for the good of the country?

Who said he can't process information? Age doesn't equal ineptness regardless of your personal experience. My mother is 90 and she's sharper than AOC. Not that I'm arguing he should have the position, he shouldn't, but not because of his age or anything your parents experienced. AOC is simply more qualified and better tempered for the work the job requires.

I'm sorry but if I asked you to take a PDF and transfer it to google docs and send it to me through discord and you CAN'T you are TOO OLD to run this country! Untrue. Maybe that's all shallow, short memory idiots will remember of her, but not those who have paid attention over the years.
Similar to Biden and Pelosi. This is not what legacies should be about.
He is right. Another big mistake by the Dems. At a time when the party desperately needed to chart a new path with new stronger, more vigorous leadership. Very disappointing. To me, anyway.
Bad for internal unity, and an even worse message to send the public.
It’s not just age, the party’s continued leadership by centrists and center right politicians has been a failure and led to Donald Trump and shown itself to be unable to fight him with Trumps reelection. People are craving change and a populist message and Democrats are refusing to offer a left wing version of that.
Democrats leftward sprint cost them record losses among minority voters. Democrats have to moderate or continue to lose. Leftism has been rejected
Uh, no. We need to stay centrist so that these people who think they like the populist BS now will have a sane adult party to come back to when it goes south or they're just sick of lies. It would really help too if we distanced ourselves from all the identity crap too.
💯% True.
Absolutely.
I think you're right on the populism, but going too far left is exactly part of the problem. We won't pull people from the moderate right if we go too far left
Ginsburg refused to resign and ended up pathetically begging Trump to be a nice guy and let his successor appoint her replacement.
You missed the point, Chris. These folks just have an addiction to power.

Change is necessary for progress in politics. 🔄

We have a minimum age to run for office we should have maximum age as well. That and Congressional term limits.
Excellent point!
REALLLLLL tired of the gerontocracy 🙄
Same. On both the microcosm (thanks to controlling family I didn't get to work, drive or date until after I moved out at 26 and I had to run away from home to do that...yes they were Democrats!) and the macro (the same patterns as my family are all what is destroying the country).

for you..
I'm retired I'm old enough to speak on this matter.. It's time we stop allowing anyone over 70 to hold office... I wish 65 was the max ... because we need youth as well as talent... in the democrat party.. There are many thing our older citizens can do... to participate.. holding office isn't one of them...
To get a majority you'd need to compromise that number.
At least if you make it 80 the parties will strategically shy away from people who get closer to that deadline.
It's tough to give up insider trading.
I do believe that we are witnessing a seismic shift like the one that happened during the civil rights movement. That's a good thing. Let those old fogeys have the democratic party and the new blood leave and form a new party.
Greed for power. No one is TRULY thinking of the country, their thinking of themselves and their own success
Exactly.
It’s also the overwhelming stubbornness that got them there in the first place. If they were good at admitting defeat, they wouldn’t have gotten into those positions at all. But you know what they say about too much of a good thing……
One political party shameless fascists, the other toothless and spineless.... To quote better geriatric: I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
David Hogg is running for Vice Chair of the Democratic Party. He just did a really good interview with Brian Tyler Cohen on his podcast. We all need to contact our state party chair and tell them we want them to support David. We also need to support Ben Wikler as Chair. Look him up. He has done wonders with the Democratic Party in Wisconsin. He has a clear and forward agenda, which we desperately need if we are going to move the party forward.
He's a troll and shallow. I don't trust him one bit.
David Hogg should get the position. He’s one to watch.

Pelosi should stop meddling with the affairs of the Democratic Party and fully devote herself to insider trading.
It's time for Pelosi and the gerontocracy to retire!
A joke and an embarrassment. But I’m glad AOC put up the challenge. She’s in this for the long con.
But..but...but... term limits!

As a care giver to my now 89 year old mother. Term amd age limits.
Smh 🙄 You have to wonder whose side are they really on 🤔
As a Republican I must say Chris Hayes makes a lot of sense here. On our side, Mitch McConnell is among several GOPers who need to retire now! Time to let the younger voices be heard.
Like Pelosi, McConnell has at least stepped down from leadership.
There needs to be an age limit of 70 for all federal officials! No one should be in government if they are over 70!
The retirement age or mandatory age for senior status for Federal judges is 70.
Isn't that age discrimination?
Terms and age limits
Please Democrats we need to pass the torch and years of knowledge and service to the next generation. This act will ensure fresh ideas and connects with the law makers and companies they represent.
And yet they elected a 78 year old Chris.
This was so frustrating to watch ....
Really feels like there’s no reforming this party, and YET they complain when its voters don’t vote, vote third party or move to the right. This is PATHETIC! They are such a disgrace.
My favorite: Harris refuses to go on Joe Rogan's show. Joe was an early backer of Bernie!!! She could have talked to him about that: why your change, what can we do.... what's your job like... anything. But she backed off, made her squeamish I think. Walz would have gone on, he probably even follows the UFC. Some of us do.
@@gameburn178 Tbf to Harris, that was a trap. If she were to go on Rogan’s show, she would have to spend months preparing to combat the sheer disinformation she would get assaulted with. With so little time to go, not going on Rogan’s show was actually the right move.
I couldn't agree more Chris. AOC would have been amazing in this role too.
Has Margie Greene said any more about releasing Trump's Epstein tapes?

There's a gulf between her and the elderly. She is not the only option on the planet. There are plenty of people in their 40s and 50s who are qualified, more experienced, and more level-headed

They refuse to listen, so vote them out
Pretty hard when they do everything they possibly can to refuse to allow us a say
Start with Chuck Schumer! 🤬

I'm a senior and I even agree it's time for a younger, forward-thinking generation to step forward to help move this country forward. We are held back by old thinking.
I wouldn't assume that age is the only factor or generalize this one committee vote. Someone other than AOC may have gotten the vote over Connolly. New Yorkers probably like her but don't assume she is well liked all over the country. And what are her qualifications to be the chair of this committee?
She's been on the committee for years and was the second ranking member for that committee in the previous congress. She definitely understands the job
I agree with OP.
Unconscionable 🤦♂️
Brother Clyburn suggested President Joe Biden, his dear friend, should pardon Donald Trump, "Pardon Donald Trump, for a clean slate for the sake of the country." I don't think 🤔 😕 so, time for old heads to go! After all the heavy lifting and struggling? Would Trump do anything for a democrat? Think about his disregard towards Vice President Kamala Harris during the campaign, his use of vulgarity against Stephanie Ruhle, saving his hardest and most racists attacks against Black women!
I stand with Luigi
This is crazy. They need to pass the baton to a younger generation. I am to walk away from the Democrats.
Thank you for being the voice of reason. The ageism has to stop.
@@LindaC616 If there are minimum age limits, there should be maximum age limits too.
