    You and Erin are a ideal ambassador to the outdoor lifestyle. When you two are together, it's like some one wearing their favorite comfortable shirt. It's not perfect, it may be a little loose and I have a couple wrinkles. But most importantly, it fits perfectly and is warm and comforting. Just like your relationship with each other. It's nice to see you away from the insane portages through inhabitable lands during the worst weather imaginable. Thanks for the time and effort to entertain us.

    Hey guys! I absolutely love all your videos. Watching them brings so much joy, especially during winter months. I can’t thank you enough for sharing.
    With that said, I have to say that it really blows my mind how irresponsible you guys are paddling on freezing water without immersion gear on. For god’s sake, buy a damn drysuit!!!!!! You guys paddled a fair distance from shore on a few occasions during this trip. There’s no way you would have survived if you had gone in. Every year we hear of people who underestimated what it means to swim in 3 degree celsius water without immersion gear on and DIE. You not only put yourselves at risk but everyone that may be involved in a rescue or recovery operation, not to mention the impact it would have on your loved ones. If you’re not willing or able to swim in it on purpose for the time it would take you to reach shore because it’s too cold then wear immersion gear.
    Sorry for ranting but this really blows my mind.
    Take care.
    Love you guys. 👍

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  4 роки тому +3

      Thank you Chuck for saying that in the most caring way possible :) Hard to make yourself pay $1000+ each for a piece of gear you don't want to wear, but you are completely right. It is life and death. Your comment got Erin and I talking about it again. Basically looking for the first Kokatat, NRS, or Level 6 dry suit to go on sale. Not sure about one piece or two though. Thanks brother

    • @caegwynrecords5721
      @caegwynrecords5721 Рік тому

      @@LostLakes Yes I was thinking that. Surely if you went overboard in water where the average temperature all year is 4 degrees, and you were in the water for anything more than a few minutes, without a dry suit, you'd be in trouble? It looks, from subsequent videos, though, (on Superior at least) that you now do the dry suit thing as par for the course?

      Unfortunately Cold Water Shock can happen much quicker than we all think.
      My young cousin passed away 2 years ago due to Cold Water Shock in 50°F water, here in Washington State, usa. Zach was only 18. He was a really fit guy, champion wrestler for his high school. It took less than 60 seconds for the cold water to immobilize him.
      We searched the river for 28 days before we found his body.
      To anyone who happens to read this: please be safe, especially in cold water/weather ❤️

      @@LostLakes Chicken is probably the most difficult protein to rehydrate properly. Canned and pressure cooked chicken rehydrates better but it still isn't always perfect. for those that are interested, to dehydrate chicken succesffully you need to cook it in a pressure cooker and then shred it , if you fry, bake , grill it , it won't rehydrate well,

    You can see the trains and hear them from there . I’ve been there every few days for over 10 years on my way to White River with CP Rail . Not much straight track in around that area with a few tunnels. It’s difficult to see the tail end of your train over 7/8000 feet long. Now perhaps a trip around the islands at Rossport there’s lots to choose from. And you can always hide away from the wind. And good fishing with spoons just flat line. Thanks great trip. 👍🇨🇦

    Just working my way through your video library. A comment about the moose sign on the beach. A moose took up residence there for some period of time during late winter early spring most likely. The marks on the trees appear not to be rubs. It looks like there are two parallel gouges in the cambium layer which are made by a moose's bottom incisors (they have no uppers) stripping bark and cambium for food when there isn't another source. Usually indicative of lacking better forage; often just to wait out the last of a hard winter. Rubbing off hair could be a sign of winter tick infestation which is an issue in the northeast state and provinces. I didn't see another suggestion, but one I'd make is that you both invest in dry suits for future adventures this time of year and the fall. Pricey, but a long-term investment in your well being and safety. Doesn't mean permission to be reckless, but as you suggested, one unexpected/un-anticipated move could spell disaster. I've done some early spring outings like this in my kayak and have self-critical for not minimizing my risk. It's another item "on my list." Enjoying your videos! Oh, and loved the background music on this one too!

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  5 років тому

      Ahh great insight, thank you again Tom! I love learning tidbits like that. And we completely agree about dry suits, in fact we just walked down to Superior on a wavy day here and we were talking about them again. As you say though, pricey... Definitely on our list though. Great feedback and comments from you...I appreciate it.

Very nice. Edit Is there a river nearby???

      Thanks River rat! Interesting, I've never heard of a kelt. The Little Pic is the nearest sizable river, maybe 20km west along the shoreline, along with the Pic River which is bigger and about 30km east. Would've been nice to be close to one of the outlets for fishing by sites but access points are pretty limited, especially early.

    I've spent much time on the south shore of Lake Superior on Michigan's coast and along Minnesota's North Shore. Waves are too big in Michigan for anything other than maybe kayaking. In MN canoes could be ok if the wind is right, but must be aware of changing conditions. Is the North Coast in Ontario often calm and mellow? Or is it just the luck of what I see in your videos that you have calm water? Or you have more protected bays? Looks like I'm adding this comment a year after you posted this video.

    Servus Jon und Erin, es gefällt mir Euch beide in einem Video zu sehen ! Kann eventuell Erin deutsch lesen ? Bei meinen Campingreisen nach Skandinavien habe ich festgestellt, dass dort viele deutsch verstehen . Wenn nicht schreibe ich künftig per Google-Übersetzer.

    Great video and awesome steelhead! I worked in Nipigon for a year and I really miss Lake Superior. What do you think of the sea to summit pan? I’ve been in the market for a new pan and I keep looking at this one. How does it handle over the open flame? Thanks, Tom.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  5 років тому

      Thanks Tom! It's a paddler's paradise when the lake cooperates. I like it, but there's a rubber keeper for the handle which will surely burn eventually. At that point I'll remove the handle and use my pot gripper so not a big deal. I'd prefer no plastic and no handle, but otherwise it's good.

    That rainbow trout would have been my dinner. I would have gutted it and sliced it into steaks. Throw those into the skillet with some butter, salt, pepper, garlic, lemon and maybe some dill, mmmmummm. That wish some potatoes, like some dried hash browns. I would sleep good.

      If you ever want to make a trip down to Tennessee or one of the Carolinas I would love to take you fishing. The mountains down here are amazing. The trout aren't nearly as big as what you are pulling out and they get a lot more pressure than the isolated lakes you fish in Ontario but it's still a great time. The local beer is amazing as well. I got to warn you though, it's much hotter here in the summer than up there. Highs can easily reach 30-40 C.

    Great Content! That was a neat trick inflating your sleeping pad with the plastic bag. Is there a special adaptor or is it something you MacGyver'd?

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  5 років тому

      Thanks Eric! It's an adaptor called the Therm-a-rest AirTap Pump Kit. I found it at a store called Ramakko's in Sudbury, and it can be a bit tricky to find in stock online.

      This one seems to be popular as well.
