You can always asked for LESS SUGAR @ "kurang manis" in any of your drink. Btw, the courgette like vegetable is brinjal @ aubergine and the leaves in your curry is curry leaves.
Malaysia has 13 states.. Each state has their own speciality in food/dishes. For example.. Melaka is well known for its Asam Pedas, Pahang for Gulai Tempoyak Ikan Patin, Kelantan for Nasi Kerabu & Nasi Dagang, etc.
Its like a rice buffet. Get mixed gravy, a senior server will know the best way to mix it. Ok gravy done so now you choose either chicken, mutton, beef or fish (you can choose more than one), and finally some veges. You can add fried egg and dont forget papadom. Thats how I normally order.
Hi Skye, I'm glad that you treid many different food from Malaysia. Next time you should try Laksa Sarawak, Nasi Kerabu, Mee Goreng Mamak, Keropok Lekor, Popiah, Nasi Goreng Kampung, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Laksa Johor, Laksa Penang, Rendang, Asam Pedas and so on. As for drinks you should try Wheatgrass, Soy Milk, Sugarcane, Cendol or Ais Kacang.
I suggest try all the variety of laksa..Laksa Penang, Laksa Johor, Laksa Sarawak,Laksam etc..Every state have their own unique laksa..My favourite Laksa Johor, Laksam & Laksa Sarawak..
Skye, almost ALL DRINKS in malaysia you can order them with "NO SUGAR" "LESS SUGAR" or Normal (no need to mention upon order, its on discretion of the drink maker)
Nasi kandar in mamak restaurants terminology simply means rice with anything.....so you choose the type of chicken or meat, or fish or veges to go with the rice or its combo. Another similar drink is apple juice with asam boi ( preserved plum)
Let me share a bit about the roti’s 1. Roti canai = plain roti 2. Roti boom = roti but bit thicker in texture and sweet 3. Roti telur = roti with egg 4. Roti jantan = roti with 2 eggs 5. Roti naan = oven baked roti, can add cheese, garlic and pair with tandoori 6. Roti tisu : paper thin roti and usually very tall like klcc tower 7. Chapatti : sibling to roti canai but taste bit flour’y 8. Tosai : thin roti , hint of sour taste but nice.. can pair with sardine for fuller dish 9. Roti bakar : toast 10. Roti jala : kinda like pancake, usually yellow in colour, nice to eat with curry 11. Roti poori : thin air puffed roti that would deflate when you pop it
Just to add on what Reez mentioned above. 12 Roti Sardin 13 Roti sarang burung 14 Roti Pisang + Nutella 15 Roti Susu (First time i ve heard from Skye) 16 Roti Milo (First time i ve heard from Skye) 17 Roti Bawang 18 Roti Tampal 19 Roti Murtabak 20 Roti Planta I like my roti to be BANJIR and have it with teh tarik. And also just dip a plain roti canai into teh tarik
I’m a local Malay … grew up in the 70s … about food in Malaysia especially locals seemed to be eating hearty portions of rice as breakfast lunch and dinner is arguably due to the hot humid weather where the sun sap all the energy like nothing …
You should visit Perhentian island in east coast, Langkawi in Kedah, Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands in Pahang, Tioman in Johor and many beautiful beaches in the Borneo islands of Sabah and Sarawak.
the leaf is curry leave normaly many malaysia indian cuisine must in curry dish due for flaour smell and curry tease. another vegetable is call aubugine dry curry
Actually in Malaysia, there’s two types of Roti Canai, one is ‘Mamak Style’, that you have already tried. And another one is ‘Malay Style’ which is made by a malay guy. If you find any Roti Canai that is made by a malay guy somewhere later, you should have a try. I tell you what, it taste different. 👍🏻
That’s true. While both are good, I always find myself preferring the small stall, regular kind of roti canai. I think it’s got something to do with the dough. Small businesses usually make their dough from scratch, but from what I’ve seen, kedai mamak will use some premade dough that comes in big packages. So the taste and texture of roti canai are very similar across all mamaks. I can’t quite articulate the differences between kedai mamak’s roti canai and Malay style roti canai, but if you’ve eaten it for the most part of your life, you know some things aren’t just the same.
normaly nasi kandar is all about white rice that cover verity of different curry..which is can also be dry, mild, creamy, spice curry, stew or fried dish..some can from made from veriity of vegetable..chicken.. motton, seafood..beef..type of eggs like fish eggs, chicken eggs. yet will accompny with pickles that is sweet savoiry..hot spice and salty pickles from vegetable and young fruit as pickle..not forget also papardam creakers..in others word eat as small buffet all in one plate. the best part we eat with hand finger lunker fingger good not using cutleries. it is normaly better go flow with teh tarik you can go with hot neither cold of your choise.
I would say nasi kandar is more suitable for lunch rather than breakfast...bcoz it is too heavy for me...unless you take only a small portion...but roti canai is definitely ok for breakfast....
sorry...basic nasi kandar is spiced fried chicken, 1 type of vegetable, boiled egg and mixed sauce. u can also add other dishes if you want such as black meat, squid, shrimp, fish n others
Actually I feel the best is roti planta, but just a bit too evil to eat at night🤣🤣, roti canai dip with sambal is the best for me too.... nasi kandar is what u ate, u have to choose the dishes put on the rice and mix it...for the set one, I guess what u wanna to try is banana leaf rice...u just need to choose what curry base u want and they will separately bring u some dishes if u want...like sambal sotong, curry kambing, fried chicken etc.
The queue for eating rice and dishes..but if you are ordering something else like roti or other food you can just sit at your table and the waiter will come and take your order..for roti canai most mamaks will only take order until 11 am and continue back in the afternoon at 4 depends to the restaurant
Many Mamak restaurant employed people from India or Bangladesh. Many of them do not know English language. They learn English and Malay only when they had arrived in Malaysia. Therefore their vocabulary are rather limited. Hence , they do not understand your questions.
If you order nasi kandar, just say “ayam goreng, kuah campur” the. Choose whatever type of vegetable dish. Then if you’re feeling it, get some mutton curry.
another great variation of asam boi drink, imo a FAR superior version is Kedondong Asam Boi. It's not available everywhere but please try and find it to try because it is heavenly. Kedondong is Hog Plum and you might get better luck at chinese or chinese-style spots to try it but Malays love it too
Just watchout...mamak's drink like juices are the most sweet 😂...maybe you better oder the plain water thou..enjoy varieties of malaysian food...really true asia..you can can everything here... cuisine's all over the world
i love spicy food but i don't like to dip roti canai in sambal (the red one).. don't know why.. 🤣 🤣 the yellow one is dhal curry and the left one is maybe fish curry...
Some malaysians have very heavy meal for their breakfast - they eat lunch/dinner meals like nasi + chicken/fish + vegetable ( nasi kandar or nasi campur)...For me Nasi Kandar is too heavy for breaskfast😁
Some of the mamak staffs are Indian citizens.. they are not good in Malay nor English..😃 Nevertheless you can point to what you want to order using sign language perhaps 😆 Hope to see you again in Malaysia and enjoying much more Malaysia can offer... 👍🇲🇾😎
I prefer roti canai made by Malays. It tastes better, fluffy and soft. Maybe the making of Roti Canai dough by Malays is mixed with eggs ,milk. water and salt compared to Mamaks who only mix flour, water and salt.

Sgt sedap. I usually for less sugar or no sugar at all for d drinks..
The leaf is the curry leaf, can be eaten. The gravy for roti canai is curry fish (orange), dhal (yellow) and sambal (chilli paste).
