Ive been to Kingston Communications for work (years and years ago). I got on the train from Birmingham to hull (had to swap trains) got off at the end of the track (literally) in Hull. It was raining more than I ever saw in my life, I was like a drowned rat! When I got to KCOM they came running over with towels lol. I went up the main call center which included there 999 operators. I was making a 118 system for the company I worked at. All i remember was they had loads of office blocks, there was loads of satellite dishes, the weather is crap and I found a pub doing pints at £1.50!
Years since I've lived in Hull but KC was massively uncompetitive back then and looking at their packages now it looks even worse. Download caps? 30/40/50/60 £ a month...Just crazy.
Hey do our phone lines get replaced regularly without us knowing or could it be the same line that was there in the 80s and were there cabinets back then or did the wire go all the way to the exchange?
+Knuckles the Echidna They generally only get replaced when a substantial failure occurs, so you could be using a decades old cable, yes. generally lines used to go back to the exchange, but since housing estates have been around, they've been using cabinets. So say you had a factory before, requiring maybe a few lines and then a housing estate requiring a few hundred is built, so it's sensible then to fit a cabinet.
An update from me - a new tech support person for BT: Still Hull is an outlier and I just learned this fact and it's blown my mind.
