Admittedly, part of why she got sidelined was her VA getting pregnant and wanting to focus on that, thus asking for Aki to get less screentime. This led to her being a "benchwarmer".
Finally someone who appreciates the Sevens & Go Rush. Agreed that Romin is by far the best portrayed main heroine in the franchise. And as a Vanguard content creator, nice call back to Aoi/Blue Angel's VA Yuki Nakashima role in Vanguard Over/Will+Dress.
I just had to make that that comparison to Yuki Nakashima's roles in Vanguard and Vrains since it was like night and day the way her characters were treated. Just glad that Sevens and Go Rush are actually very good when it comes to their female characters and they are series that do characters in general so well. Finally Yu-Gi-Oh is doing for female characters what Vanguard has been doing since series one.
Well, I will give an interesting date of each Female Lead: Tea: She is the first Female Lead who has aspirations outside of Duels. Duels are not what is important to her. She also has a 100% winning streak in her only Duels. Alexis: She is the only Female Lead dedicated reclusively in a Ritual Deck. Akiza: She is the first Female Lead to start as an antagonist. Also she is the first Female Lead who has supernatural powers (psychic powers) Kotori: She is the only Female Lead to declare her love for her MC in her own series. She is also the only Female Lead whose concept and focus is not Duels. Yuzu: She is the first Female Lead which is an important plot point: she is a piece of an entity. Aoi: She is one of the few Female Leads who Duels or participates against Arc antagonists (or Final antagonists). She is also the Female Lead with the fewest Duels on screen. Romin: She is the first Female Lead to beat the MC and a Rival fairly without any weird tricks. She is also the only Female Lead who comes with the "Brainwashing" gimmick as part of the character. Yuamu: She is the first Female Lead to use a pure Dragon Deck (also, the only Female Lead who does not have female-looking Monsters in her Deck)
@@SoraBellAs you said, Yuya forgot how to pendulum summon which gave Yuzu the chance to defeat him otherwise she would've likely lost. Meanwhile, Yuga made no mistakes and Romin still defeated him. That's the difference.
You may have been mistaken on Romin, Luke on-screen was undefeated until the last episode (unless you count The Lukeman possessing him. His only other losses are in flashbacks). But, you know, with that in mind, "Lost to Luke" is just par for the course.
@@Zetact_ I think they mean Roa and not Luke since the comment says "a rival" and not "the main rival". And many count Roa, Neil and Asana as rivals of Yuga besides Luke is the main rival. (even if some don't believe that since he's also Yuga's best friend)
I truly hate how they wasted Aki/Akiza's potential in 5Ds, even worse how they dropped the ball entirely on the Arcadia Movement being a potential story Arc for Aki, I know, I know, there was a cult issue at the time. But it doesn't change the fact this could have really helped her character arc and growth as a person as she deals with whoever inherits the leadership role of the Arcadia movement after Divine died and tried to follow in his footsteps to ensure they still could go about their plans. Which would force Aki to confront them to stop them from feeding the cycle of hatred and fear of the public toward Psychic Duelists like her. Possibly even helping start a TRUE haven for them to learn to control their powers at for the better of society. But NOPE, they made her a damn bench warmer and I remember how they did her dirty against Team Unicorn, she was only able to keep Stardust on the field? REALLY? You made Aki, the strongest psychic duelist and arguably the strongest female duelist at the time unable to defeat even ONE of their members to give Yusei his big 1 v 3 in a row spotlight? You couldn't let Aki knock ONE of their members out of the way for Yusei?! That's insulting and I actually for Aki in how they screwed over her potential. Not to mention I'm pissed how Stardust and Red Dragon Archfiend gets so damn many supports and evolutions, even Majestic Dragon forms, but Black Rose Dragon didn't see support for years until Ruddy Rose finally came out long AFTER 5Ds was done....And still no Majestic Form for Black Rose Dragon OR Ancient Fairy Dragon! WTF?!
Exactly! People like to defend Aki in part 2 of 5Ds but don't really understand all the loss in potential for her character to actually grow. She becomes a bench warmer and even when she duels she could not beat the first member of Team Unicorn even after he faced Jack, which makes her look pretty weak. If she could not beat him one on one then fine, but even after using his resources on Jack she still took an "L". We never see her growing accustom to utilizing her powers for good but just see the end result when she becomes a doctor. We know of the evil of Divine but never see her attempt to help fellow psychic duelist who still might be misguided by Divines teachings. Heck even Kiryu got closure, but Aki never really had dedicated fleshed out development. And yes apparently the Crimson Dragon plays favorites. I don't get whey it couldn't provide evolutios to Black Rose or Ancient Fairy in situations when the world was on the line like with Stardust and Red Dragon.
THANK YOU, @@ventusace9054, I am truly glad someone understands where I am coming from! I mean Aki started out as someone who's strength and dueling skill could easily be considered the third top duelist, especially given Sayer considered her his big "ace in the hole" when needing someone powerful to deal with powerful duelists or an army as his walking nuke. Black Rose Dragon's Ruddy Rose Dragon form would have been great to see if they only gave her more character arc to bring it out and maybe, ideally, a Majestic Form for her Black Rose Dragon as she is needed to save the world. I'm not saying make Yusei or Jack seem weak but give Aki her due credit as a powerful female duelist who CAN help the two guys out as the third strongest signer that she should have been! Give us a story arc or two of her process to go from trying to find her place in life and not JUST be seen as the terrible Black Rose Witch, but someone who uses her powers for good and even help out her fellow psychic duelists who was mislead, or in some cases brainwashed, by Sayer/Divine's way of thinking and psychic powers when needed for his goals. An organization that big and influential in society could not be removed so easily. Case and point? Look at Umbrella from Resident Evil. It took a whole incident like Raccoon City to start their collapse and it was a battle that took YEARS! I know there must have been others who would have carried his will and desires to have revenge on the society that shuns and hates them! Oh, better example, think Magneto's side of the Mutant/human problems in society!
One thing that bugs me about Alexis was as awesome as her Cyber Angel's profile is, it wasn't until Arc V where she'd make the Ritual portion a consistent gameplan. It was just "What flavor of Fairy am I feeling?" where as Zane ALWAYS had a route to get the Cyber Dragons he loves to show off. Cyber Angel Dakini is such a cool boss monster that'd also give her recycling capabilities, but I guess they thought of Idaten and Izama wayyyy too late. Also don't help she was done dirty by losing off-screen.
I'll open by saying I 100% agree Romin is the current top mark for Yu-Gi-Oh girls. As far as I'm concerned, that's not a serious question. However: While Aki was sidelined, I don't think it came off as overly disrespectful of her. Worth noting, she's slightly younger than the male leads, starting the series at 16. This would totally leave her in the territory of still going to school before and during the WRGP arc. While I agree she was a passenger and she wasn't as strong in the later parts, she still did absolutely fine given the circumstances. The little mini-arc of her getting her license seemed like reasonable enough character to me. It showed that those years of abuse made her tough. It made her resilient. While she did lose her thorns and become a much nicer person, she still could absolutely roll with the punches. She wasn't inherently better than the other students. She tried ten times as hard. Fell down, and kept getting up over and over. That's inspiring. And when she did get her chance to put that training to use later, well, that leads into my next point. When she did duel, she never lost her edge. She wasn't Jack or Yusei, but she pulled off good plays. She lost to Andre. Jack got stomped by Andre. But she at least did the legwork of setting up the stage. That's more than Jack can say- given his ego nearly lost them the match instantly. One could make an argument that that duel made her a better duelist than Jack, at least at that point. And in the tag duel against Sherry, she was shown to be at least on Crow's level in stopping the mindgames. Sure, she didn't get the amount of duels the male leads did, but she also didn't take random losses. The part where she lost her powers was absolutely just to job her. That being said, it did lead to the hospital scene, which had her doing what she could as herself without needing them. This experience might've influenced her epilogue trajectory. And while it's not explicitly confirmed, the implications of Divine/Sayer's commentary on the strength of her powers suggests that they're tied to her emotional state. During the WRGP arc she was pretty much just coasting along without a major stake besides wanting her friends to win at that point. When the Arc Cradle descended though, it was life or death for the fate of the world and the lives of her friends. I think the reason she was accepting of her powers coming back was because she fully controlled them and understood their utility. It's not like she hadn't already made her peace with them at that point. It had been at least a year since the Dark Signers. Surely she'd dueled a good bit in that time. As for the love interest bit, yeah, the pattern is annoying. Though given her story through that point, it's hardly surprising. Yusei literally singlehandedly pulled her from an extremely dark place. He was the catalyst by which she was able to reconcile with her parents. I'd have been pretty surprised if they DIDN'T try to do something. And for what it's worth, Yusei is pretty hard to read. I might be hoping a bit too much about their final scene in the last episode, but I think that's as close to Yusei flirting as we'll ever see. TL;DR I recently rewatched 5Ds (and finished the final episode last night) with extra attention paid to Aki in particular given the Yugioh Girl discourse since particularly Romin showed up. Aki is fine. I think she's a good character and a reasonably strong showing of a female lead. I think I'm personally liking her participation more than Yuamu right now. (And imo Yuamu's in a pretty floppy state right now.) That makes her second place in my book. Hope you all have a nice day. Thanks for bearing the wall of text. lol
I wouldn't go so far as to say Rio is the best out of all the series, but I did like her in Zexal. She had a really strong start and it's a shame that they didn't do more with her character. She just ended up being used for Shark's character development later on
Best you can hope for with Yoshida as showrunner. And...given most only care about Gallop, they'd better settle in on a rewatch, as he's composed the series for slightly more episodes than not. And even material he had nothing to do with is rife with sexism, like most of Arc-V.
I honestly hated ryo. She went from useless princess in castle to mary sue(i mean lets be honest, her being great at everything she try when she was back in school was pretty much lazy writing) to "oh yeah, remember this is supposed to be a serie mainly for boys so lets make ryo as useless as the traditionnal girl in a shonen anime" And they fucking dropped the whole plot with IV too. What is it that caused the incident that got her hospitalize....? We know IV was here
@@drearydoll6305 I can see your point about it being lazy writing, but I didn't mind it much, because at least it served a purpose. It demonstrated her "ice queen" personality and how she learned to become strong so she could protect her brother. In IV's first duel with Shark, we learn that Tron was the one behind the incident, and that he gave IV a card (I don't remember the name off the top of my head) which was the cause of the fire that put Rio in the hospital
I'm gonna have to go with Tea cause she's the OG and I had a major crush on her growing up. But all the Yu-Gi-Oh girls are pretty cool in their own way. At least none of them are unlikable.
Nice to see a video talking about all the ygo main girls done by someone who actually watched all shows and so can judge better. Here my "two cents" about the girls (wall of text incoming): Anzu (Tea): First ygo main girl and I used to not like her much but now, I think she's alright. She might not really be a duelist but she was a good friend and hey, she had a dream to became a professional dancer. That's something. Her feelings for Atem were one-sided but I think she and Yugi have a chance since Yugi in the early manga volumes/season 0 definitely had a crush on Anzu. Sure in DM, his feelings for her weren't that prominently shown but it's fine imo. (Takahashi apparently also said that they would marry if Anzu returned from the US and was still in love with Yugi in some interview) Asuka (Alexis): I think she is still my fave GX girl but tbh, there's basically no competition for her. Most GX girls are so irrelevant sadly. There is Rei (Blair) but I never really cared for her. I will agree that despite being called "Queen of Obelisk Blue", Asuka's not really shown to be on the same level as Ryo. But I guess when you have no other strong female duelists, Asuka's automatically the best aka "the Queen". Her crush on Judai was really unnecessary since that boy won't ever like her more than a friend especially after having fused with Yubel. Aki (Akiza): Yeah, I can see why many people said (or still say) she's like the best main girl since her introduction was interesting (no immediate friend of the protag + her psychic powers) and also a pretty good duelist. Which makes it sadder with how she was handled later. I didn't need her crush on Yusei but at least I can sort of see why she loves him and well, they have that scene at the end of 5D's where they're all alone, staring at each other with a smile. So maybe, this wasn't so one-sided even though Yusei was clearly focused on other things than romance. Kotori (Tori): And we go back to the "no duelist, just a childhood friend who supports the MC" main girl. Which is okay but compared to Anzu who loved dancing, I find it a but boring that Kotori had no other passion so her not being a duelist wouldn't be so bad. She had the guts to be the first main girl to actually confess her feelings and while Yuma blushed, Idk if he really felt the same for her before. But since they're childhood friends, they will likely end up together anyway. Yuzu (Zuzu): I like Yuzu which is why it hurts even more what the heck the writers did with her later. She was so good in season 1, had a rival with Masumi, tried to become stronger on her own by asking Sora to teach her Fusion summoning and was the first main girl who was the main protag's most important person. And while Yuya never outright admitted his feelings for Yuzu, his actions spoke a lot about how he felt for her. This is the one ygo MCxMain Girl ship that truly feels mutual imo. However, I still hate how Yuzu became a damsel after s1 and in the last 80 (?) episodes of Arc-V, she didn't even have a duel! Imagine a ygo main girl who can duel doesn't duel in such a long time. And I agree with you when it comes to "why did Yuzu never learn the other summoning methods other than fusion like Yuya?". Felt like a waste to reduce her to Fusion especially when we already have Serena for that. Aoi (Skye): Ngl, I sometimes struggle to decide who had it worse: Yuzu or Aoi? I'd personally say it's Yuzu since she had a high phase so her downfall hurt more. Meanwhile with Aoi, I was always hoping that Vrains would do something with her - but they didn't. (instead it just became worse and worse for her) When she saved Playmaker and he saved her later, I thought this could led to an interesting dynamic. Sadly, I got disappointed. I like Aoi and how her as Blue Angel felt so bubbly while her real self was introverted and kinda lonely. But Vrains really just disrespected her with her not having really impressive wins but some rather humiliating losses. I stil think she should've defeated Soulburner or got a rematch with Spectre where she beats him. Her at the end of Vrains saying that she did nothing makes you wonder if Aoi was just modest or the writers were doing some bad meta joke. Romin: Overall, I will agree that she is the best ygo main girl we have so far. Not only had Romin some impressive wins but she was no Miss Flawless and despite loving duels, she also loved music and had a dream of her own. But I can't deny that I hated how overdone the whole "Romin can't cook" gag was. Idk why she only got 1 duel per arc in season 2. And I personally disliked the retcon of her tonedeafness. Heck, Princess G even wondered about that and Romin's explanation why she suddenly makes music was also weak imo. If it had been foreshadowed that she simply believes in being a bad singer despite this isn't the truth, alright. But there was nothing so I don't like this change. Tbh, I believe this was just an excuse to have her VA sing this special ED song especially how Romin's solo career immediately ended after defeating Princess G. Yuamu: I know, Go Rush isn't over yet but so far, I'm a little disappointed with Yuamu. At first I thought she's cool for being the first main girl having a dragon deck (that isn't "girly" either) and also very smart. But right now, I feel like the show doesn't really care much to do with her despite her being part of the main trio. While Yuhi was introduced as weaker as Yuamu and so had plenty of room to grow, Idk if I can say the same for Yuamu. She already started of as a smart girl who runs UTS and is said to be the stronger Ohdo twin. But Yuamu doesn't seem to have an actual dream or goal to achieve like Romin imo. Her only "flaw" is her greed/love for money but that's mostly handled as a joke and isn't that focused on either. I hope season 3 does something big with Yuamu since she mostly exists rn while Yuhi on the other hand gets a lot of focus and him being Yudias' best friend also gives him a bigger role. The season 3 poster is a little worrisome since Yuamu's absent there for some reason. (even if some speculate on her being the big bad on the poster which I'm not sure of) Btw, I'm all for your video idea about the Vrains characters. I'm glad someone else thinks that not just Aoi but many more were done dirty. (heck, Go might be done worse considering he was randomly made an antagonist in s2 despite him being jealous of PM was already done in s1 and then they became sort of friends - my guess is that they did this to him so Soulburner could take his place as PM's ally)
I feel that Tori actually had the most potential as a character rather than duelist. Her being Yuma's childhood friend was only seen in one of the endings but I definitely think they could have expanded on her more. But I give her points for actually confessing to Yuma. I feel Aoi got done dirty the most. Akiza was good but could have been better. Tea was alright. Alexis was good in the beginning but fell short and I feel the same about Yuzu. Akiza is probably the only valid answer sadly because she's the one that did the most and even that wasn't a lot. I haven't seen Sevens or Go Rush so I'm not sure how they are but many have said Romin is good.
I really have a soft spot for Heroines in Yugioh because they have character despite being underutilized. Especially Aoi who felt like the Vrains Protagonist having heavy involvement with the plot and great duels despite her losses
Hot take maybe but i’m fine if authors don’t want to include female characters, like the Yoshida guy. If he’s aware he sucks at writing them, for whatever reasons, then that’s fine. What i’m not fine with is bothering to write them and make them pathetic characters just for the quota of having one or have her be the trophy love interest for the MC.
Ngl I agree. This was an awesome video and I’m glad there are more people like you covering the YuGiOh anime. Keep up the great work! This is gonna be a bit of a long message, fair warning. Hahaha. I know people have their complaints about Romin because she didn’t win as much in the 2nd half and they feel as if they overused the joke that she can’t cook. But I still liked her character. I mean her development did come full circle when she quite dueled her idol princess G and won. She’s the shining example of what a female lead should be. I do wanna play devil’s advocate and give Tea her props. Despite her not being a duelist. She’s shown to have held her own and won a few times. Granted Joey didn’t know as much how to duel. And Mai did surrender (to cheer yugi up) and her one win was against Crump (a filler character but i consider the DM Manga and anime 2 Separate things) But imo it does show she’s at least willing to put herself out there if need be. She’s a lot better of a duelist than Tristan will ever be that’s for sure. But I do wish more was done with her. Aki is the best Studio Gallop YuGiOh female lead. It makes me sad just how irrelevant she was in the second half. She did get that win against Sherry in the end (with Crow) but i can’t help but feel she got shafted. Yuzu’s career ended when Sergey beat her which is awful. But he killed off any momentum she had. Tori was always gonna be just a support character and she does fill that role well, as does Tea, but the fact she was not only brainwashed but lost EVERY duel she took part in is a bit of a disappointment. It was one episode but still. Aoi is a sad case. But I am gonna give her credit too. She had the hardest set of opponents any Gallop female lead has had. She had to duel the OP MC, the OP MC’s best friend in Soulburner and the main villains of season 2 and 3. I still think that despite her losing her duel with Bohman. She put up a hell of a fight and went down swinging. It was the best showing a YuGiOh female lead has had against a villain in Gallop YuGiOh.
I think one thing that is often an issue is that a lot of the girls and women of Yugioh don’t really have good friendships with other girls. If they do, they’re often unexplored like Alexis with Jasmin and Mindy. With many, it’s a rivalry over a guy. You see this with Tea and how she is with Mai, Rebecca and Vivian, the group of girls that Jack has in season 2 and interactions between Tori and Cathy. It’s part of a broader problem that the women of yugioh often can’t seem to exist without needing a guy to bounce off of. We have a lot of girls in yugioh who either look up to or have storylines where it’s focused on her brother. We rarely ever have a younger brother of a girl where he looks up to her or a pair of sisters where this sentiment is done. Don’t know if the Tyler sisters from Arc v count. That’s why Yuzu was the most disappointing for me. She had Masumi and Celina but then she became a pokemon princess peach. And then the manga came along where I wanted to burn the book.
@@danielmizera6124 It’s just… it shouldn’t be hard to do. And yet they just don’t try. And it does suck, frankly. Just reminds me of the Pete David controversy where he’d been writing Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for marvel for over a decade (the most prominent Romani heroes) and then, a few years ago at an LGBTplus panel, he went on a very long rant against Romani people.
@@danielmizera6124 No one knew how to write women… that is surprising. Feels more like no one was bothered to learn about how to write women. Aki I can agree on to some extent because she had episodes about her own goals eg learning to turbo duel. I think it’s the Divine of it all where, whilst its good stuff and she does have some good matches with Misty, she does have that problem where she just doesn’t really socialise with the other girls when Yusei isn’t involved. The social media thing is good.
@@danielmizera6124 Yeah, the mangas don’t really do it justice or, if they do, they’re told to drop it. Honestly, GX did a good amount of things for Alexis. Just feels weird that we never see a girl help a girl out.
@@danielmizera6124 Also the fact that most of the girls outside of Blair go to an elite middle school before duel academy. But yeah, just seems like they really cared about the girls competing with the guys.
It's true that ygo main girls don't really tend to have (many) friendships with other girls. There's Aoi and Miyu but considering that Miyu was mostly off screen due to her coma (and introduced pretty late), we barely saw anything from that friendship besides a flashback and their reunion in the last episode. Yuamu has Manya as her best friend and she's seen to have a good relationship with Asaka and Mitsuko. Even though I wouldn't say that any of those friendships are treated as important as some friendships the guys have. As for "brother looking up to his sister": I don't have an example for that but I remember Yoshio looking up to Mimi, his mother. That was even the main point of the episode when they dueled which is sweet since most guys look up to their dads or other male figures if anything.
asides from being written in cliche ways... i think a significant part about YGO female characters being incomplete/incompetent (relatively speaking) was due to the theme of them trying to make everything female in their deck, instead of trying to come up with a proper strategy this limits their options heavily if they (including the writer) actually tried like the mc, his rival and the villain, they could actually showcase their skills and become good characters.
Gender of their monsters is not the issue to be honest. Romin has a whole female deck (besides 1 card) and doesn't have issues as a character or duelist, while in Contrast Aoi has two decks with good strategies one of which was meta and the decks were all female, but they still made her a loser. It is not an issue for the writers giving a character a waifu deck, the issue is what do they want the character to achieve as a duelist and in most cases the answer is not much. Anna has a train deck, Rio has a Ice Bird deck and Blair has a Mystic Dragon deck and still could not be good characters despite not having waifu decks.
@@ventusace9054 i have a question,i know it was a figure of speech when you said if you don't watch the whole series you're not playing with a full deck of cards, but do you mean a 45 card deck or 60 card deck😅😂
To be fair, Aki falling for Yusei makes sense, especially given how he went out of his way to help her more than once throughout the series But I am disappointed she was sidelined for a lot of the Post Dark Signers arc. It was a mess and a huge disservice to her character and her development
7:24 i wouldn't necessarily put téa and Alexis in the caring girl next door category as téa clearly cares about atem more than yugi and Alexis even in the best of times (when she wasn't in the society of light, where she didn't care about anything at all) shows sass and little compassion especially when shes spectating a duel and comments over it, and that comes to a head in season 3 where she guilt tripped jaden even when he risked his life many times, and season 4 when she couldn't empathise with him over his change in personality after the yubel incident and then couldn't properly admit her feelings for him Sure they have their good moments but the points i mentioned sour their characters for me As a side note aki is my favorite of the yugioh heroines as she had the best development and the fact that she got sidelined for crow still bothers me to this day
Roa isn't the main rival, it's Luke. (and yes, Luke can be both, best friend AND main rival) Romin lost to Luke off screen when they and Gakuto had to decide on their team name during the tournament arc.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that Aki is voiced by the super sentai/power rangers SPD yellow dekaranger Ayumi Kinoshita my favorite Super Sentai series. I like all of them tbh they all have their pros and cons.
On the subject of female characters that's kinda funny is that Sevens snuck in a romantic sideplot of Luke and Romin throughout the series - you see them steadily build up from a rather cold annoyance (on Romin's part) or an active hostility (on Luke's) to a friendship with multiple episodes focusing to some degree on that pair (like the curry episode or the dishwashing episode) so that by the end of the series the subtext is extremely palpable, especially when things are wrapping up in the lost memories arc ("The Kirishima Band Affair" kind of makes it difficult to say it's "sub"text at that point). Point being that Romin does so well as a character she takes something that other characters were trying to do as their main motivation, does it in the background, and performs BETTER.
I wouldn't count what Luke and Romin had as a "romantic sideplot" because none of them has a crush on the other. What they have in the end is a good friendship at most.
@@mikai4738 It's mostly subtext and can go either way, really. But near the end, with "The Kirishima Band Affair" it's a bit tough to say that it's more of a unique relationship. It being something that you can easily see based around genuine chemistry and not needing to do the usual song and dance of the characters fawning over one another and still coming across as being a thing is my point. It might not even have been intended and the writing of Sevens was good enough that it could really be either. Point being it can be a case of doing what previous heroines were trying to do with more effectiveness.
I think the writing for the female characters is a little ridiculous :/ I’m pretty sure the writers said they “can’t write women” or something 😭 but honestly they just need to write a dude that wins a few duels and loses a few and has a decent personality and bam, that’s literally a perfect female protagonist 😭 they very clearly want women to like yugioh they had the whole princess cup tournament in Japan where it was women only
I liked Aoi the most of the girls pre-Romin (still need to watch SEVENS, life hits hard sometimes) but I think the real thing that irked me around her is that she was actually given not one but two of the most meta-relevant archetypes in a series where they went out of their way to make everyone at least somewhat viable AND she herself actually went out of her way to tweak her deck to patch around the thing that took her out the last time. And she still loses spectacularly.
In what way did Blue Angel very well? No impressive wins, got humiliated several times when losing a duel, was infected by a virus, d*ed several times (not just her but still), her fighting for Miyu felt like a lazy way to give her Aqua as a partner without being a Lost Incident victim and to still have her relevant after season 1. I like Aoi but to think she did very well is pretty weird imo.
While Romin is a great yugioh main female protagonist, my personal favorite will always be Téa Gardner, aka Anzu Mazaki. Téa is a great support system for her yugioh series that I honestly think was better Tori. Téa is kinda the reason why friendship is such an integral part of the yugioh franchise. Téa was also brave enough to stand up to Seto Kaiba, which shows that she can be tough. Plus, she was the one who came up with the plan that allowed the Pharoah to learn his true name of Atem, which allowed him to defeat Zorc once and for all. Not to mention that while she wasn't primarily a duelist, Téa Gardner is still technically an undefeated duelist. I especially like how she dueled using Dark Magician Girl. In the matter of Alexis Rhodes, I think that she was a great female yugioh protagonist and a pretty good duelist. She was sadly underutilized in GX, and her arc V counterpart was even more so. However, I still think that Alexis got some good character development, particularly during season 4 of GX. Aki Izayoi is without a doubt the best duelist among the main female protagonists. She definitely had a great character arc, but after the dark signer arc, she got sidelined due to the popularity of Crow and his blackwing deck. Even so, Aki going to the dueling school after the dark signer arc isn't out of the blue, especially when it was established that she was previously a student from a dueling school. Not to mention that losing her powers was part of her arc of her realizing that she is more than just her powers and that she can help without her powers. It even sets Aki up on her path to being a doctor, especially when her powers come back and are used to heal rather than harm as they had been previously used for. Not to mention that Aki didn't have a one sided relationship with Yusei. It is heavily implied in the final episode of 5ds that Yusei may have feelings for Aki too. Plus, considering how much Yusei has done for Aki, it makes sense for her to fall for him. Tori in particular was just a cheerleader, even more so than Téa, but just not as good. Not to mention that she has never won a duel. Yuzu was a good female protagonist and a pretty good duelist with a good character rivalry with Julia, but she was reduced to being a plot device. Also, Yuzu did lose in the tournament to form the lancers when Dennis defeated her. Also, as the UA-camr Yugioheverything pointed out which I agree with, I think that Yuzu's downward spiral began when she ran away from Yuri. From then on, regardless of her duel record, she was just relegated to plot device. At least Yuzu is the first female yugioh protagonist to defeat the main protagonist of her respective yugioh series, even if it was due to Yuya not understanding pendulum summoning. Aoi Zaizen was sadly a disappointment in Yugioh Vrains. Romin definitely had great character development from start to finish, while being a good duelist. She even legitimately defeated the main protagonist of her Yugioh series, even though Yuga isn't exactly the best duelist in yugioh sevens. I honestly don't know much about yugioh go rush, so I can't make a proper assessment of the main female protagonist of that series. However, Téa Gardner aka Anzu Mazaki is still my personal favorite yugioh girl and who I consider the best yugioh girl.
I partly agree téa has her good moments, but they are few and far between, and I feel she doesn't even like yugi that much, but she obsessed over atem, which is clear when she implied that losing atem would mean losing everything in season 5s finale even when yugi was right there Alexis was only relevant in season 1 with her looking for atticus and that's it. In season 2 she's done nothing important and is then brainwashed. In season 3 she's dead for most of it and only made things harder for jaden. In season 4 I don't see any development as she didn't understand why jaden had a change even though she made him feel guilty in season 3 and doesn't even let him know how she feels about him. Its a shame since she is one of my favourite characters from gx Aki had big potential only in the dark signers arc with her conflict with sayer, the arcadia movement and misty, only to have a few highlights near the end of the series. She's also the one who had strong chemistry with the mc yusei considering how much they've been through together(the other series don't have that many good moments with their mc) and that makes her the best in my eyes (sure she didn't outright admit it but she gave really strong implications while alexis diverted from the subject as soon as the opportunity came up, and she doesn't even mention him in arc-v) Tori was a slightly worse version of téa Zuzu was a damsel in distress and her and yuya just brush off that the other bracelet girls and yu-boys practically died for them to live And I didn't watch vrains, sevens and go rush enough to give an opinion on them
I was very surprised that Roman and Yuga weren't shipped together since it's a tradition in a Yugioh show for the leads to be shipped together. I prefer them not being shipped, Yuga and Asana are one of the best ships in Yugioh and Asana is one of the best female characters on Yugioh. For a lot of female leads, they face the problem is they stick around because there the female lead not because there nessessary to the plot.
I pause the video 2 minutes in before I hear the rest. I've been here since the first series and: I wholeheartedly agree. Romin is fun to watch and appropriately competent compared to the rest of the cast. It sounds like a low bar but somehow struggle with that metric xD EDIT - Now seeing the end of the video: Ishizu, Rebecca, Ghost Girl, Yubel, would like to enter the conversation. I mean, I still agree with the take in the video but you know, for the sake of completion xD
As someome who has also seen all the Yugioh series and continues to watch Go Rush I must tell something about your reasoning here. I will start by saying that, I literally do not see why people think that "Romin is such a great character overall and is way too important to be deleted from the series because of all the great things she has done." I literally could name you all the "great" things she did one by one and that they do not matter at all for the plot of the series overall. That doesn't mean that they are not important moments that need respect I hear you say. YES THEY ARE. If there is no point anyway, then you just like that we have a female character that does things, even though those things don't do anything for the greater picture of the series. So I will analyze to the best of my memeroy all the great things Romin did in the series. 1) She beat the protagonist of the series unlike any prior female protagonist we had ever seen. First of all, Yuga is definetely not on the same caliber as all the other protagonists. He is never visibly stronger and just manages to win barely in his duels, with the exception of like the tournament for the title of King and against Asana and Neil. That aside, it didn't achieve anything because the duel started from what I remember from a misunderstanding that Princess G was gonna quit dueling cause of Rush duels or something and Romin got mad at Yuga for that and decided to quit dueling. Yuga tries to convince her otherwise and the two decide to duel, where Romin wins and just finds out that Princess G like won't quit, so the whole episode was pretty much pantering to Romin fans. 2) Romin beats Gakuto and makes her team not lose the 3 vs 3 tournament. Do I need to say more than GAKUTO IS A JOKE to convince you that it is not a feat to beat the guy? But aside that, the whole tournament from what I remember was about the usual "erasure of Rush duels" which became a constant theme going forward. Why am I mentioning this? Because in the other arcs YUGA LOST with those stakes in place AND NOTHING HAPPENED. Yuga just dueled the ones he lost against again and all got "fixed". So even if the tournament went on Yuga's team favour or the others, nothing would change anyway. But then you say: "How would Roa duel Yuga then?" Because god forbid Roa says something like "Who here would like the great Roa to duel Yuga, creator of Rush duels?" and just like that they would duel for the fun of it and the whole "Sevens roads is fake" conflict could have been avoided because it was useless anyway. 3) Roa beat Roa, a former antagonist to Yuga and also her more talented cousin. Same goes that I said above for this tournament too. It did nothing overall. The title of King that Luke got was mentioned briefly for like the first episodes after the tournament and didn't add anything. You mean to tell me that Luke must have the title in order to show that he is as strong if not strongest than the CREATOR OF RUSH DUELS when HE WAS ON PAR WITH HIM AT EVERY TURN AND OUTPLAYED EVEN YUGA'S MAXIMUM? So this was unnecessary as well. 4) Romin dueled Princess G in order to show that she has the ocnviction to chase both things she loves deeply, music and dueling. Even though I liked the duel vey much and it was a good dynamic between the dreamer and the realist adult, it just didn't make sense to me. I don't remember if there is something I am just missing, but what was stopping Romin from doing both? Princess G supposedly does both and she is fine. Also, Romin doesn't duel by her own volition. She is usually challenged so she duels, or she just joins up with a team and duels for the fun of it. I don't think that her not dueling as much would be a problem, since she doesn't duel much in the first place. Overall, call it hate or anything you want, but the only thing that I take from all that I saw that makes her "a good female yugioh character" and is shown here is that she is treated exactly the same as the male counterparts so that makes her a great character? That is not a cohesive sentence. That is just a vessel for a good idea. The one thing missing is the personality and overall character of the vessel, which here didn't have much going for her despite the cute young girl that can be badass if she wants to. On that note, Aki who is completely treated dirty after the first season, actually has a character, a tragic backstory (psychic powers that kill people), actual struggle to overcome (controlling her powers), has development even in small parts (from her being lonely all the time to now being surrounded by friends and her crush) and is a good duelist because she never lost before Yusei and was ON PAR with him the whole time. Neither is perfect, but I much prefer a character that has substance and is treated poorly than a character that is treated right, but just stops there. Ps: The struggle that Romin must fight her berserk form is non-existent. I don't remember that ever being a struggle, it is more like an asset and it is also something that she uses later on against the sushi girl, so she never got rid of it.
Not including the two newest girls, I feel Tea is the best as character with her low key funny perfect win streak (I could be biased since I followed yugioh around battle city started), Alexis and Akiza are arguably similar as both didn’t live up to expectations (clearly not their fault) anime Alexis post season 2 was wasted to have awkward crush with her best win being Titan from first season while Akiza was arguably worse being important for first plot then only coming back for team unicorn which she surprisingly lost (I know makes since since she’s new against a veteran but that was very anticlimactic after so much build up), Tori wasn’t as liked as other three but I found her more enjoyable than yuma who was annoying boring yugi copycat and I personally didn’t want to see a third disappointing female lead duelist, yuzu is arguably the most disappointing one being plot important but no real role outside damsel in distress (which is why I disliked Serena who just stole her role), finally there Aoi was apparently meant to be like Alexis role wise but ultimately didn’t make much difference plot wise (I believe her dub ironically told playmaker she feels she didn’t do much for him) I would have preferred she stayed as blue angel cause girl was dumb one time thing whole maiden was lazy adding her in final arc after writer remembered aqua didn’t have a role yet.
Calling Yuma an "annoying boring Yugi copycat" is wild lmao. The only things they have in common is both having a special necklace (Yugi the millennium puzzle and Yuma the emperor's key), both having a spirit partner who is great at dueling and both having a female childhood friend who has a crush on them. Other than that, they're pretty different. Yuma is way more extroverted, naive and sillier than Yugi who is calmer, smarter and used to be a bit shy. Yuma had to learn to become better in dueling while Yugi was always good at it. I like Yugi but he got overshadowed by Atem so much since we mostly see him dueling and used for merchandise. Meanwhile Yuma might have gotten some help by Astral at first but he wasn't overshadowed by him for the whole anime.
I haven’t watched Yu gi oh since the 5ds era but hearing you talk about Romin has me like WOW! A badass female lead who beats the protagonist and becomes a dueling idol? That’s a breath of fresh air! ❤
my big problem is not the female lead dosen´t duel, but became more like a statue with no personality that only servers to be the main love interest to the main caracther. Kotori is a great example of that. We never learn nothing about her dreams, her history with yuma and she feel forced in the history, like the writters only put her because the producers wanted a "yamato nadeshiko"and her romance with yuma was very forced. He never treated her with that importance.
Alexis and Jaden are one of the most forced ships in the franchise. Alexis got shipped with so many guys that I eventually stopped caring about her life love. Yusaku and Aoi make a better couple because add least they both struggle with being socially awkward which gives them something to bond over.
I agree. They more often than not are a projection ship for people I've seen. And their "relationship" is sorely misunderstood when you see people saying stuff like, "they are the best couple" or claiming that Jaden is Alexis' boyfriend, or even the real crazies who try to claim it is canon that they got married at the end of the series. Yusaku and Aoi have much better potential from what you said, I agree. The only problem is that I've seen that aspect of them get misunderstood with people turning them into a cutesy shojo anime type pairing and basing them off the fake dub lines that were added in for ship tease like Jaden and Alexis had.
No it wasn't Nothing was forced between Alexis and Jaden First off Alexis always was interested in Jaden anyway and when she dured him she became even more interested and then she started hanging out with him It is kind of obvious that something was going to happen with Jaden and her but I feel like the writers were probably told not to like they get orders like that all the time I don't see anything force between them at all. The only thing that was force was her not admitting her feelings for Jaden or when Jaden mature throughout the series for him not to admit his feelings for her cuz you can tell he had some genuine feelings for Alexis but they were so focused on breaking Jaden and him trying to find Jesse after feeling like it's his fault the reason why all the things are happening at dual academy.
I definitely plan to do it one day. It might take a while to construct it and get resources, but one day I would love to give my sincere opinion on that series.
Rio Kashimiro is the best design wise but Aoi/Blue angel ver. had the best deck. Aoi should have won her fight against Yusaku if plot didn't meddled with the fight.
I think Tori is a better version of Tea, Tori had a more well developed relationship with Yuma and the other characters. Even thought she wasn't much of a duelist she felt like she had more to do then Tea.
It def feels like Konami went back to drawing board after VRAINS, A new card game with a new anime with well written characters from a completely new studio. The more I learn about VRAINS it makes me happy I never watched it, it seems so bad all around. I think I'm fine with Anzu and Aki having the fall for the MC bit. It might fit for Kotori as well but idk. As well as the support role making sense it is a shonen anime afterall. But it sucks seeing the main girls get sidelined especially when they are supposed to be good duelists.
12:33 Aside from when it's collaged with images of the other 'female leads' possessed, *THIS* is by far my most despised image in the franchise. More than Weevil, more than that quiz kid mugging, more than anything. Whomever was responsible for this, go to the Shadow Realm and NEVER come back.
I don’t know much about the yugioh anime outside English dub and mainly the Duel monsters. I also have original Yu-Gi-Oh manga up to volume 9. If I had to take a guess on who the best Yu-Gi-Oh! girl would be I want to say 5Ds girl. She like a actual witch magic and all. And Rose dragon is cool
Aki wins this for me by a mile, while i undertand the logic of good writing and yeah she got done pretty dirty, she still is the most interesting character by far. She is followed by Yuzu and Blue Girl in my book. Still, i agree completely with your views.
Out of all the female leads I think Yuamu is the worst, its not specifically her fault its an issue with Go Rush which is the 3 main characters (Yudias and the twins) don't develop believeable bonds with a lot of side characters which makes it difficult for me to care about characters like Yuamu when they feel distant from most of the cast.
Yudias and Yuhi do have bonds with other characters. Yudias has Yuhi, Zwijo, Epoch and her butler while Yuhi has Yuamu, Damamu, the Jersey Devils and a minor rivalry with Zwijo. Yuamu on the other hand, does feel detached from the other characters asides her brother. Heck she acts more like Yudias' boss than his friend. She's supposedly friends with Manya but the two hardly interact. She doesn't even interact much with Damamu despite him being essentially her youngest sibling. If anything the character Yuamu interacts the most asides her brother and Yudias is Fisher Sky of all people.
@@RivanEXT99 It's kinda sad that Yuamu and Manya's friendship isn't more relevant. As for Sky, I'm not surprised that they have a close bond with Yuamu since Yuamu impressed them during their duel. So much that they would always go to her first when something needs to be told to the main cast since they trust her the most. But even this friendship isn't highlighted much in the last arcs so Yuamu kinda is just "there" when not walking around with Yudias and Yuhi. Btw, I wouldnt put the Jersey Devil brothers as a Yuhi specific bond. Instead there's Tell or Mbembe (the space dino) who showed more connection with him especially the latter through their shared love for plastic models.
I definitely want to do that vid. It will be a tall order since it is a whole series discussion and I need to format it perfectly since I can imagine those who love Vrains wanting to take my head for even having such opinions 🤣
Idk how people can like vrains or even call it the favourite, it’s the worst Yugioh series of all time right now, every season is the same thing, characters who are written smart are forced to miss play because the plot made thst happen, there are many predictable duels, the writing is bad, and there is allot of bullshit in this series overall, like for instance how does lightning turn jin’s continuns into life points to not lose to revolver?? How did Bohman get earth if earth was bonded to go at that time. And many more, if you want I could even help with things that you’d need for this video, because I really hate vrains for how bad it is. @@ventusace9054
Also while not in love with the MC....but she is in love the rival. Don't deny it Romin is with Luke, when Sevens showed up the Female duelist was amazing and gave us great girls Tiger, Asana, Ranze, Yuka, Rovian....Yuna (annoyed the hell out of me at first).
the thing with mirei with vanguard was that she was the main antagonist of her arc, so of course she would be strong because the main antagonist role. as soon as she turned into a good guy she just became another girl in the series, still strong but just as any other girl. if mirei was a hero from the start she would be like any other vangaurd girl, not to strong not to weak
I wouldn't say like any other vanguard girl. Mirei was still strong despite her going from main antagonist to side character and even after her we got Urara, Sophie and Halona who were all strong female characters. Even if it wasn't Mirei on top Vanguard still at least put female characters in high profile positions in the series which is more than what can be said about most Yu-Gi-Oh series and she was far above Aoi who is her VAs Yu-Gi-Oh counterpart.
@@ventusace9054 oh I'm not disagreeing with you. I just think she had a better showing because of her antagonist role. But being like all vanguard girls is not really a bad thing either. Most vanguard girls are pretty competent, I have never really had any complaints about any vanguard girl, and d I really do like vanguard.
Look, I'm not trying to defend Aki as I believe her character got done extremely dirty and is overrated. But I think she did have an arc post dark signers. First of all, she was actually 16, so younger than yusei (which is why she went to school). The reason her psychic powers disappeared wasn't for nothing, it was because she believed she didn't need them anymore, and since she was starting to live a normal life like any other student her age, she actually rejected them. During the Ghost robots attack, she didn't go fight with the rest of the cast, she actually stayed away from conflict to try to protect and reassure a little girl. It's pretty clear she just didn't want to be like the rest of the cast and battle, she wanted to help and save people, yet everyone wanted her to duel. This all came to fruition at first during her duel with Sherry (with whom she had a shadow of a relationship, but it got sidelined pretty quick) and she, alongside crow, managed to help her and bring her back to their cause. At the end of the duel, the building collapses on them and she instictly uses her psychic powers again, because she realizes she needs them once again. With that, she discovers another use to her powers: protecting, and healing people. This allows her to realize she mustn't reject what she is, and accept herself for who she really is. At the end of the series, she has a conflict with the rest of the cast because while they all believe she would continue down the road of a pro duelist, and in fact want her to be, she actually... Doesn't want that. She wants to stop with all the violence, and to help people in other ways than by fighting, because this is who she really is. In the future, she becomes a doctor and uses her psychic abilities for the good of everyone, and I really love that about her! Now this doesn't excuse the fact her love for yusei became more prominent than her entire character, the fact her hinted at relationships with sherry never lead to anything, the fact she was given a whole focus on learning how to do riding duels, only for her to lose at her only important match onscreen, or the fact she was just sidelined for the entirety of it. But there was SOMETHING, and I think it deserves recognition
Romin Gang Let's Go I think Tea might be the best in her role as a non-duelist because of the type of series Yugioh started as. It worked because there were many other non-duelist that did stuff like Tristan and Duke (mainly in the manga). Alexis is a type of character who doesn't get as much focus as many male characters in the series. Even the lesser ones perform better. I feel even in the female department, Blair feels more imposing simply because she is a child and despite not being Obelisk Blue felt like a character that has actual skill in the game. Several non-main female characters have more appeal than her. I can think of Rebecca and Vivian from Original Yugioh or the Amazon users from Arc V and maybe even Tanya from GX. I wish I could give that much credit to Mai who felt like a forced attempt to make females look competent. She gave Yugi trouble but mainly because Yugi had a mental struggle with himself and was very handicapped. And she lost every duel in the manga that was on page.
what're your thoughts on the manga versions of the girls? imo, midori from the gx manga is definitely a contender (very big darklords fan, also, she's a solid character)
Totally agree Midori was handled very well and I also like Reggie. GX probably did the best with females. Luna in Zexal didn't have much of any moments, which is expected since Yoshida didn't even want her in. Yuzu is not even close to how good her Anime counter part was. Aki was okay, but when it comes to 5Ds I really liked the manga's take on Luna/Ruka and the way her and her brother duel together.
Forget? No I spared the embarrassment of mentioning her. Even if she was entertaining for like the 4 or 5 episodes she was in, she doesn't qualify for the discussion of best in an 8 series franchise. Granted I still like her. A female duelist with a machine deck was cool, but yeah I couldn't add her to this list.
Good video! Now to wait for the sequel: Who is The Best Yu-Gi-Oh! Best Friend? Our participants: DM: Joey GX: Syrus/Jesse 5Ds: Crow ZEXAL: Bronk Stone/Shark Arc-V: Gongenzaka/Sawatari VRAINS: Soulburner SEVENS: Luke GO RUSH: Yuhi Fun Fact: It turns out that Gallop's Yu-Gi-Oh actually has better supporting female characters: some even better than the main female characters. If we talk about Rush's Animes, we have some highlights in SEVENS and GO RUSH: see Mimi (SEVENS) or Yuna/Asaka (GO RUSH)
I definitely was going to do that for the list. Kusanagi is definitely feels more like the best friend to Yusaku than Soulburner, who just feels more like an ally than an actual friend.
@@ventusace9054 The thing with Kusanagi is that sometimes I forget about its existence (but this is my problem). Kusanagi could come in as a best friend for VRAINS, but I think Yu-Gi-Oh makes clear some rules/norms on how to identify the best friend in the series. Furthermore, if Kusanagi is considered a best friend, I think Kaizo would also fall into that same category of best friend: even more so that we know that he always supports Yuga in any situation, despite the Drone's complaints.
I just can't watch Sevens and Go Rush. The Speed Duel thing just doesn't do it for and I'm not fond of how insanely young everyone is. If they can bring back regular duels I'll give these new series a chance.
I didn't forget that is intentional. The main list was for the main heroines of each series and at the end was special mention for characters some might try to argue are the best girls, which I don't think Ghost Girl fits that bill either. I like Emma as a character but she is not even in the conversation of the best girl the way she was portrayed in Vrains.
Not gonna disagree since I haven’t seen Sevens. I do think your criteria is flawed though. Best Yugioh female character I don’t think means they also are a good duelist too. If for example let’s say the next yugioh series has the main female character the best written with complex emotions, a good character arc, etc. (far and above what you say this girl from Sevens has going for her) but she isn’t a duelist by you’re criteria she’s out if the running despite being the best. I don’t think the character has to be a duelist to be the best. Now with that in mind I don’t think the two non-duelist girls are the best. Granted I think Tea is a good character and I like her I don’t think she’s the best.
Why shouldn't the best girl of a Yu-Gi-Oh series not be a duelist would you hold that same sentiment for a male character in Yu-Gi-Oh? Most would not claim a sideline male character like Tristan, Mokuba or Riley the best male in the franchise so why should the criteria be changed for female characters? And if the next female lead is a great character with complexity that would be okay but couldn't that be a traits you find in any anime? Why would she be the best female character in the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise? Not saying she can't be an amazing character that personality wise. I just don't think it is asking a lot for a character to be considered the best in a card game battle anime to be able to actually play the game well, being able directly impact the plot outside of just being a device. Having a good personality and arc is just the bare minimum that should be applied to any main character in general. In Yu-Gi-Oh there are many male characters that are great characters and are also duelist, so I won't lower my standards for female characters who should be just as complete as those male character counterparts and finally we are having that in Sevens and Go Rush. I appreciate your comment and get what you are saying but I still think my criteria is fair for what constitutes the best female in the entirety of a card battle anime to be a great personality, have an arc and actually be able to do what the anime focuses on.
I think you put too much into whether or not the character likes the main lead or whatever, I don’t think you should count that as a con, I think the collection of different things can still make them good characters but good vid either way
Tèa wearing sandals with socks - out Although her look is awesome, Alexis can't admit she love someone. I just hope it doesn't show her as a hard-to-get girl - above average Akiza is actually nice, but the facts she was a "witch" gives a little stress - average The girl of Yuma is a child - out The girl of Yuya is actually fine. She doesn't deny her love to Yuya, she looks pretty good, but her worries about her lover are hard and might be a problem - close to good Blue Angel (can't remember her real name) is a girl that will be hard to get into, but I believe once you get into her personality she's basically missing self confidience, but when you see her as blue angel, you see that someone just need to pop her self confidience problem to act like her real self she keeps inside - might be good. Don't know either of the other girls.
I think Jaden and Alexis are one of the most forced ships in Yugioh. I can buy they are friends but I don't think they would make a good couple. Alexis got shipped together with so many guys I stopped caring about her love life.
I'm not going to lie 7 and rush I don't consider you give series I know controversial but honestly I don't consider them Yu-Gi-Oh series I consider them something else because it doesn't feel like Yu-Gi-Oh at all That's just my personal opinion and the two female characters from yugioh7s and go rush are probably good characters I'm not denying that but since the other Yu-Gi-Oh series are a little bit more we have to look at it from a mature lens and yes we do like commented female characters but usually in shonen in general most female characters are not the focus you know and that's just something that people kind of need to understand. And it's great that the writers from Russian sevens were able to create a competent female character but what's the point of having a confident female character in a show or franchise or series that people aren't paying attention to You know what I mean honestly if we're talking about great female characters from Yu-Gi-Oh series honestly it would have to be between Tea Alexis and Akiza, I mean I've watched all the series up until Sevens and I would say those three are probably the best female characters And maybe we'll throw in a little bit of Mai Valentine Because her struggle with trying to find friends and be part of a group and struggling with losses and dealing with loneliness is actually a good character development for her especially compared to how she was kind of left off in the manga where we really didn't get that much from her I would have loved to see a little bit more from that but you know again I understand this is a shounen it's main focus is going to be the boys honestly and I think as much as I don't want to say it I just think that that's just something we got to get used to because we have Shojo and shojo really has a female characters in the lead and the males to the side and it's funny how we don't really hear any complaints about that one but something who's target audience is for boys and they focus primarily on boys there's always videos and essays about how the female characters suck but nobody really has videos about how Shojo males suck So I feel like it's one of those We kind of have to let that one go lol. But yeah I would say those for female characters are probably the best one to me.
Well if you must know and want to question my expertise on the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise the actual pronunciation from the original Japanese version is "Zeal", where the X is a graphic in the logo and always intended to sound like the English word "Zeal". Only in the dubbed version is the X in the graphic incorporated in the name making it sound like "ZECK-sul" when it is not originally supposed to be. So if anything I am calling it by the actual title not the wrong title, I am also a sub watcher of the series. If you don't want to take me on my word the info is readily out there. So to answer your question what people have against pronouncing it "ZECK-sul" is that it is not the intended pronunciation of the title.
It’s a good thing to wait because currently, Yuamu is arguably the worst. The fact she’s hyped to be tied as the second most important character with her brother, to then end up having such a pathetic role, especially to Yuhi, who btw is supposed to be the less skilled duelist, is creating a massive contrast. At least the previous girls didn’t have any real expectations, even Romin, which is why Romin is the best tbh.
Don't need to focus on female characters, they are just there for fanservice and to sell overpriced figures. Shonen anime stories should alway focus on male characters as that is the targey demographic. Imagine how terrible dragon ball would be if chi chi got more focus than goku or vegeta
That’s a stupid take. AOT is better than most other shonen and it has good focus for female characters. Chichi wasn’t boring because she was female, but a useless fighter. If Vegeta was hypothetically a female, the character would still be good, just change a thing or 2 about how she’d get Trunks. Sex has nothing to do with the character writing.
Aki was basically a boss character, she got worse when she joined the heroes.
This happens WAY too much in anime.
God, Aki was actually scary as an antagonist. She became downright useless as a hero, it's depressing.
Admittedly, part of why she got sidelined was her VA getting pregnant and wanting to focus on that, thus asking for Aki to get less screentime. This led to her being a "benchwarmer".
@@jaymiechan Even then, its no different from how other female characters were until ygo sevens decide that girls also deserve to be good.
@@drearydoll6305I wonder how long it will be until we get a female protagonist? 🤔
After all, Pokemon has done it.
Well, I will give an interesting date of each Female Lead:
Tea: She is the first Female Lead who has aspirations outside of Duels. Duels are not what is important to her. She also has a 100% winning streak in her only Duels.
Alexis: She is the only Female Lead dedicated reclusively in a Ritual Deck.
Akiza: She is the first Female Lead to start as an antagonist. Also she is the first Female Lead who has supernatural powers (psychic powers)
Kotori: She is the only Female Lead to declare her love for her MC in her own series.
Yuzu beat yuya in episode 2 of arc v because he forgot how to pendulum summon.
Yuzu is also the first female lead to beat a main protagonist yuya. Romin is the second female lead to beat the main protagonist yuga
Yes but Alexis true Monster is Cyber Blader.
She went from useless princess in castle to mary sue(i mean lets be honest, her being great at everything she try when she was back in school was pretty much lazy writing) to "oh yeah, remember this is supposed to be a serie mainly for boys so lets make ryo as useless as the traditionnal girl in a shonen anime"
And they fucking dropped the whole plot with IV too.
I wouldn't put all the heat on Yoshida. The female characters got did dirty whether he was working on it or not, like arc v
Yoshida makes a lot of dumb decisions though.
Best Yu-Gi-Oh girl?
Dark Magician Girl of course.
:P
Nice to see a video talking about all the ygo main girls done by someone who actually watched all shows and so can judge better.
Here my "two cents" about the girls (wall of text incoming):
Anzu (Tea): First ygo main girl and I used to not like her much but now, I think she's alright. (Takahashi apparently also said that they would marry if Anzu returned from the US and was still in love with Yugi in some interview)
Asuka (Alexis): I think she is still my fave GX girl but tbh, there's basically no competition for her.
(even if some speculate on her being the big bad on the poster which I'm not sure of)
Btw, I'm all for your video idea about the Vrains characters.
Romin is genuinely goated. You should check out sevens
@@XTempestBuster so I've heard. And her deck looks cool I'll definitely give it a shot sometime
Wow, not even 10 seconds in the video and you already did answer the question, I guess i ll watch the rest
Well let's be honest here. The main purpose of females in an anime aimed at boys is to serve as the eye-candy. 🤷♂️
1. Romin 🎉
2. Akiza Izinski 🎉
3. Zuzu
4. Alexis
5. Aoi
N/A. Anzu/Tori
asides from being written in cliche ways...
i think a significant part about YGO female characters being incomplete/incompetent (relatively speaking) was due to the theme of them trying to make everything female in their deck, instead of trying to come up with a proper strategy
this limits their options heavily
if they (including the writer) actually tried like the mc, his rival and the villain, they could actually showcase their skills and become good characters.
Definitely 60 cards. Got to make room for all the hand traps and fodder for Pot of Desires 😆
Hold on for one second! Tori confessed to Yuma in the final episode of Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal!
To be fair, Aki falling for Yusei makes sense, especially given how he went out of his way to help her more than once throughout the series
But I am disappointed she was sidelined for a lot of the Post Dark Signers arc. It was a mess and a huge disservice to her character and her development
Anna Kaboom cuz she has a bazooka
I saw this last year. Finally have the opportunity to comment on it and say thank you. Appreciate this video for giving Roman and Sevens a fair chance
7:24 i wouldn't necessarily put téa and Alexis in the caring girl next door category as téa clearly cares about atem more than yugi and Alexis even in the best of times (when she wasn't in the society of light, where she didn't care about anything at all) shows sass and little compassion especially when shes spectating a duel and comments over it, and that comes to a head in season 3 where she guilt tripped jaden even when he risked his life many times, and season 4 when she couldn't empathise with him over his change in personality after the yubel incident and then couldn't properly admit her feelings for him
Sure they have their good moments but the points i mentioned sour their characters for me
As a side note aki is my favorite of the yugioh heroines as she had the best development and the fact that she got sidelined for crow still bothers me to this day
Yep once we got Yu-Gi-Oh Sevens the girls got really great progress, and Romin is an amazing duelist SHE BEAT THE MAIN PROTAGONIST AND MAIN RIVAL!!!
Roa isn't the main rival, it's Luke. (and yes, Luke can be both, best friend AND main rival) Romin lost to Luke off screen when they and Gakuto had to decide on their team name during the tournament arc.
@@mikai4738dah crap, besides that she is an amazing female duelist and she caught my attention more than the others
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that Aki is voiced by the super sentai/power rangers SPD yellow dekaranger Ayumi Kinoshita my favorite Super Sentai series. I like all of them tbh they all have their pros and cons.
Yeah.
Fun fact... Luna was introduced earlier then Akiza... so for like 2 episodes, she was lead girl... :-P
I don’t Aki wasn’t one sided, she and Yusei seemed to have mutual feelings for each other.
@@mikai4738 It's a more fair reading than shipping either with anyone else.
Still read more into Asana/Tiger, tho.
If I made a Fanfiction story on Yu-Gi-Oh 5ds it would be a rewrite.
Alexis was the first competent female character akiza was decent and blue angel did very well
In what way did Blue Angel very well?
I partly agree
téa has her good moments, but they are few and far between, and I feel she doesn't even like yugi that much, but she obsessed over atem, which is clear when she implied that losing atem would mean losing everything in season 5s finale even when yugi was right there
Alexis was only relevant in season 1 with her looking for atticus and that's it. Its a shame since she is one of my favourite characters from gx
Aki had big potential only in the dark signers arc with her conflict with sayer, the arcadia movement and misty, only to have a few highlights near the end of the series. She's also the one who had strong chemistry with the mc yusei considering how much they've been through together(the other series don't have that many good moments with their mc) and that makes her the best in my eyes (sure she didn't outright admit it but she gave really strong implications while alexis diverted from the subject as soon as the opportunity came up, and she doesn't even mention him in arc-v)
Tori was a slightly worse version of téa
Zuzu was a damsel in distress and her and yuya just brush off that the other bracelet girls and yu-boys practically died for them to live
And I didn't watch vrains, sevens and go rush enough to give an opinion on them
I was very surprised that Roman and Yuga weren't shipped together since it's a tradition in a Yugioh show for the leads to be shipped together.
I've been here since the first series and:
I wholeheartedly agree. Romin is fun to watch and appropriately competent compared to the rest of the cast. It sounds like a low bar but somehow struggle with that metric xD
EDIT - Now seeing the end of the video: Ishizu, Rebecca, Ghost Girl, Yubel, would like to enter the conversation.
I mean, I still agree with the take in the video but you know, for the sake of completion xD
As someome who has also seen all the Yugioh series and continues to watch Go Rush I must tell something about your reasoning here.
I will start by saying that, I literally do not see why people think that "Romin is such a great character overall and is way too important to be deleted from the series because of all the great things she has done."
I literally could name you all the "great" things she did one by one and that they do not matter at all for the plot of the series overall.
But then you say: "How would Roa duel Yuga then?"
Because god forbid Roa says something like "Who here would like the great Roa to duel Yuga, creator of Rush duels?" and just like that they would duel for the fun of it and the whole "Sevens roads is fake" conflict could have been avoided because it was useless anyway.
Man, rush girls keep getting Ws, they're just peak
@@treymykel
If there was Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Movie, Alexis will express her feelings for Jaden.
"Who's the best Yu-Gi-Oh female character?"
Me, an intellectual: "Probably Mia."
Romin still the only girl main character to get a W from the protagonist as far as I know. Definitely her.
Really curious what the rest of your thoughts are on Vrains, would like to hear how you feel about it.
What are your thoughts on Medori and Reggie form the Gx manga?
It def feels like Konami went back to drawing board after VRAINS, A new card game with a new anime with well written characters from a completely new studio. The more I learn about VRAINS it makes me happy I never watched it, it seems so bad all around. I think I'm fine with Anzu and Aki having the fall for the MC bit. It might fit for Kotori as well but idk. As well as the support role making sense it is a shonen anime afterall. But it sucks seeing the main girls get sidelined especially when they are supposed to be good duelists.
Yeeeee romin is a clear number one for me such a good dulest
@@RivanEXT99
Yuamu is much better than Romin because of her strategy and her potential.
Yeah I’d like to see that vrains video you mentioned
Romin definitely surpassed her predecessor
Also while not in love with the MC....but she is in love the rival. Don't deny it Romin is with Luke, when Sevens showed up the Female duelist was amazing and gave us great girls Tiger, Asana, Ranze, Yuka, Rovian....Yuna (annoyed the hell out of me at first).
Romin isn't in love with Luke.
Good video. Sadly this video is wrong because it's not about Goha Yuna, the actual best Yugioh girl.
Serenity, Miho, Risa, Mayumi, Blair
the thing with mirei with vanguard was that she was the main antagonist of her arc, so of course she would be strong because the main antagonist role. as soon as she turned into a good guy she just became another girl in the series, still strong but just as any other girl. if mirei was a hero from the start she would be like any other vangaurd girl, not to strong not to weak
Romin Gang Let's Go
I think Tea might be the best in her role as a non-duelist because of the type of series Yugioh started as.
The amount of Ls blue angel took despite playing two very competent decks is downright depressing.
My brother in Christ, you forgot Anna Kaboom. She was super entertaining.
8:38 Akiza was 17 not 18.
well, for AKi, her voice actress isas bussy on a live action series she was cast to do, os they had to write around Ayumi's bussy schedule
Good video! Now to wait for the sequel: Who is The Best Yu-Gi-Oh! Best Friend?
Our participants:
DM: Joey
GX: Syrus/Jesse
5Ds: Crow
ZEXAL: Bronk Stone/Shark
Arc-V: Gongenzaka/Sawatari
VRAINS: Soulburner
SEVENS: Luke
GO RUSH: Yuhi
Fun Fact: It turns out that Gallop's Yu-Gi-Oh actually has better supporting female characters: some even better than the main female characters. If we talk about Rush's Animes, we have some highlights in SEVENS and GO RUSH: see Mimi (SEVENS) or Yuna/Asaka (GO RUSH)
You know what. That is not a bad idea at all. There are real good contenders for the MC best friend. That is going to be a tough one to make.
Could we add Kusanagi to that list? He’s a lot closer to Yusaku than Takeru/Soulburner
Does Tea's one side love count if we consider Season 0?
Where did you get that pic of Tea? Where she is holding a card like that? I can’t find it anywhere.
I just can't watch Sevens and Go Rush. The Speed Duel thing just doesn't do it for and I'm not fond of how insanely young everyone is. If they can bring back regular duels I'll give these new series a chance.
what change happened after 5Ds? seems......problematic
They really wanted a younger audience, so they made rush duels and a younger cast, cause the regular game is way to hard for a kid.
You forgot about Ghost Gal though
I didn't forget that is intentional. The main list was for the main heroines of each series and at the end was special mention for characters some might try to argue are the best girls, which I don't think Ghost Girl fits that bill either. I like Emma as a character but she is not even in the conversation of the best girl the way she was portrayed in Vrains.
Wrong Tea has a 100 win rate clearly the best
Why the female characters get smaller and younger with each new mainline yu gi oh? is there 8 of them now?
Imagine calling Tea useless. A 100% winrate is nothing to scoff at.
But she only had one and in a Filler arc
@@elvinvazquez9360 Actually, she had 2. Wouldn't make sense to mention 100% winrate if she would have had only 1 duel so far.
I think you put too much into whether or not the character likes the main lead or whatever, I don’t think you should count that as a con, I think the collection of different things can still make them good characters but good vid either way
Tèa wearing sandals with socks - out
Although her look is awesome, Alexis can't admit she love someone. I just hope it doesn't show her as a hard-to-get girl - above average
Akiza is actually nice, but the facts she was a "witch" gives a little stress - average
The girl of Yuma is a child - out
The girl of Yuya is actually fine. She doesn't deny her love to Yuya, she looks pretty good, but her worries about her lover are hard and might be a problem - close to good
Blue Angel (can't remember her real name) is a girl that will be hard to get into, but I believe once you get into her personality she's basically missing self confidience, but when you see her as blue angel, you see that someone just need to pop her self confidience problem to act like her real self she keeps inside - might be good.

You have watched every single series of Yu-Gi-Oh yet you still call it Yu-Gi-Oh Zeal and not Zexal , what do people have against the name zexal?😂😂😂😂😂
In japanese the prononciation is Zeal
It’s a good thing to wait because currently, Yuamu is arguably the worst. The fact she’s hyped to be tied as the second most important character with her brother, to then end up having such a pathetic role, especially to Yuhi, who btw is supposed to be the less skilled duelist, is creating a massive contrast.
At least the previous girls didn’t have any real expectations, even Romin, which is why Romin is the best tbh.
Even if she remains this stagnant thru season 3, she's still better off than Carly, Ruka, Serena, Yuzu, etc.
@@christopherb501 i don’t think so, because again, nobody expected anything from them, unlike Yuamu.
Yuamu is one of the best characters and much better duelist than Romin and Akiza.
Don't need to focus on female characters, they are just there for fanservice and to sell overpriced figures.
Shonen anime stories should alway focus on male characters as that is the targey demographic. Imagine how terrible dragon ball would be if chi chi got more focus than goku or vegeta
Ah well I agree with you but also disagree say hello to Kaito Tenjo, Reiji Akaba and Ryoken Kogami/Revolver.
@@terencebc I'll agree with you on AOT but never forget the 80's and 90's anime as well.
@@yuseifudo7987 i dunno a lot of 80/90s animes.
