Screamer - Graffiti Software's PC answer to Ridge Racer

  • The 3D arcade racer was the big hit of the mid '90s arcade - colourful, fast-moving, simple and yet also endlessly replayable. Then the Playstation brought them into the living room with a spectacularly faithful Ridge Racer conversion. As a PC owner, I was convinced a good 486 could do something just as impressive when it came to polygon-throwing. Screamer certainly looked like it'd be the game... but was it?
I'd tell you, but apparently I can't even get the thing installed correctly. Yes, it's one of THOSE videos.
    Unlockable tracks:
    0:00 There's a box, and it's bad
    1:05 Vintage installer time
1:58 A brief history(ish) of Graffiti and Screamer
5:15 The Playstation arrives in Europe
5:50 It all goes horribly wrong
8:36 The PC's year of being the ultimate gaming machine
10:18 Actually it's Daytona USA we should be talking about
10:52 A lesson about environment mapping
    12:24 Engine sound effect piracy
13:03 A weird sort of nostalgia
    14:16 Controllers from the future!
    15:42 Things fall apart
    18:18 Trouser Bandit League
19:13 Fondness for Screamer, or perhaps its era
20:07 Really we're all just at the whim of the box
Thanks to Genesis Temple for their detailed history of IDEA Soft and Graffiti, which I found incredibly useful while making this video. If you enjoyed it, buy them a Ko-fi at genesistemple....
Also, inevitably, to Evan Amos for his ever-useful library of console images and the community of Pexels.
Music links will probably appear below, but if not they are "Bunny Hop" and "Sand Castle" by Quincas Moreira, from the UA-cam Audio Library.
Comments are pre-reviewed to avoid spam. I aim to publish all comments, including dissent, but overly pedantic or negative ones may be moderated. Hearing about different experiences and what things were like in other countries adds a lot to the video! Please try to do so in a positive way while remembering that if I had to explain every minor difference the video would be 2 hours long and boring, rather than 22 minutes long and boring. Failing that, at least make me laugh.

All praise the UA-cam algorithm! A UA-camr covering classic racing games. Subscribed!
Looking forward to videos on Magnetic Fields Rally games. And Test Drive 5! Although I really hope you don't roast it too much. It seems to be shunned, but I've many fond memories of it.

Draw distance can be increased by selecting the higher details in the options menu.
Though it crashes on one track in dosbox.
To get around it you can simply copy paste the low detail version of the track track and rename it as the high detail one.

I had the annoying thing that I set it to Hi, captured all my first impressions and general racing footage, then when I got to the end I found it back on Mid without time to recapture everything. It's better on Hi certainly, although still some pretty obvious pop-in. That said it was a fast engine in its day for the amount of detail, some compromises have to happen somewhere!
The Track 5 crash is weird. I had more problems back in the day than I did through DOSBox, maybe it just doesn't like non-Intel processors? Found a few other people mentioning similar but don't know how common it was. CPU speed seems a big factor, it never happened when I was using anything Pentium 133 equivalent or slower. Should have a go through PCem to see if I get similar results there. (Short of finding a bunch of vintage DOS machines of various speeds)

Even though I've always enjoyed racing games can't say this one brings up any memories for me. Enjoyed the video 👍

I've been fairly consistent with releases but UA-cam tends not to widely publicise the ones with more niche topics (and then of course the Duke3D one isn't advertiser-friendly, I'm surprised it's done as well as it has) - sometimes it needs a bit of searching or checking the subscriptions page :)

I only just found out about these pc racing games over covid times amazingly enough and …i like em …this one does feel a bit like someone trying to make gran turismo/Screamer and test drive 4 defo wants to be mario kart ……which to me makes them interesting…..cool vid as always 👍

I had screamer 2, bought second hand. I spent so many hours on it, and loved it. It only had a handful of cars and tracks but it felt so good to play!
Pity that for the 3rd they tried to jump on the Colin mcrae rally success, but screamer rally wasn't nearly as good. The series died there :(

It does feel nice! Even the little bit of the demo I played felt much more progressive and linear, S1 by comparison is all about that knife edge between "fine" and "too fast".

Delightful idea for a series, despite having the sanctity of the fundamental premise violated.

Heh, funnily enough this one passed me by back in the day and I only discovered it when putting my S3 ViRGE series together. That card has a lot to answer for!

    • @TimberwolfK
      @TimberwolfK  Рік тому

I think I went through most of the things which gained a reputation for being terrible budget cards! Trident 8900 at first (to be fair, the slow speed was fine until SVGA became the norm for more than just strategy games), then the S3 ViRGE, and then once things moved to AGP a GeForce 2 MX200.
And while more mediocre than bad, I'm not sure the GeForce FX5700 I had in my Pentium 4 was known as a particularly clever purchase, either...

Cute dogs! Obviously quite disappointed the box of games doesn't contain snacks 😅

    • @TimberwolfK
      @TimberwolfK  Рік тому

The smaller one is food-motivated to a ridiculous degree. OBSESSED with food. The large one doesn't really care, he'll take snacks if they're available and not too much effort, but on the other hand, if there was a new tennis ball in that box...

I too owned an S3 Virge.
    It absolutely, was that bad.

The thing for me is I bought it not even knowing it was supposed to be a 3D card, it was purely because S3 had a decent reputation for 2D cards and the speed was a solid upgrade from the cheap VLB cards.
It was only much later I started playing things like Midtown Madness and the Descent 3 demo and going, "hang on, I seem to have a 3D-accelerated option... no wait, I absolutely don't."

THE CHICKEN GAME!!!!! 3:20 God, I completely forgot about that but I loved it as a kid. (actually i kinda hated it, but i kept coming back to it for some reason)
I played a ton of the sequel, which was called Bleifuss 2 over here. I remember it being fun, but I was also quite young when I played it

The little bit of time I spent playing the Screamer 2 demo definitely felt a lot more rally-y, it's also a much better handling model. (Sega Rally's is amazing, it's just the right mix between feeling like a car and letting you get away with ludicrous things)
I should give Screamer Rally another try, I only ever played it round a friend of my dad's who was showing off the fancy new thing he'd just bought called a "Voodoo Graphics card"....
