Mine is stalled a bit at the halfway milestones point due to burnout from my program. So, I'm just gonna take an official medical break next term 🤷🏽♀️
I'm also transitioning therapists -- from psychotherapy to somatic therapy for complex PTSD. Now...I still hate exercise & y'all can't make me! 😅 But I feel nI do enough as a public transit commuter 👀
PhD suck update: first year board paper due in 8 days, buggering off north immediately afterwards, board on Dec 4th, absolutely bricking it. Also my skin too has decided to go from milkmaid to teenager as soon as I hit 30 this year, go figure.
Holly, thank you for sharing such relatable content. We've all had days, weeks even months at sucking at a PhD. But I truly believe that sucking at a PhD is part of doing a PhD. I'm proud of you without even knowing you, congratulations on kicking your mental health's ass. Sending you love ♥x
I have watched and rewatched this, as it is so relatable. My biggest take is the 'small gains' comment from the archives. I aspire to 'small gains' days in general with the Ph.D! Final year here, 2 extensions and a leave of absence later..... keep on keeping on x
Your videos ALWAYS make me laugh out loud. I adore your sense of humor. Also, such a huge congratulations on managing your mental health with your lifestyle. That's a gigantic accomplishment and I salute you
Love this vlog! I'm in the midst of writing up my dissertation proposal for my proposal defense in about a month. Although I'm almost to the 3rd year, the imposter syndrome is still strong and I never think that my writing is any good! Why do us perfectionists do that to ourselves??!! Keep on delivering "real life" while getting a doctorate...it is so refreshing to watch! I would love to get a coffee anytime!
Oh, that’s interesting! I leant into the practice rather organically, it really helped me visualize my day and what number of tasks I can actually get done. I’ll do some research on it, thanks for that comment! X
Thank you so much for putting this vlog up. Its so validating and heart warming to see how you manage the challenges of health, mental health, academia and life. Thank you.
Holly, as usual you share the most relevant-to-the-research stuff, which is YOU and your process. Always very inspiring. Thanks for taking us with you on your rounds! ☕🙋🏻♀💖
Just found your videos, you are amazing, beautiful person. 1 Year cold water emersion!! Wow, you are smashing it. I wish i lived by the sea. I'm inspired to get in my cold water tub tomorrow, ive chickened out for the last 3 days.
Holly I love to see your vlogs! the jumper is indeed fabulous and when you put your rucksack on you looked like it was your first day back to school - so cute :) Keep going my friend, lately i'm reminding myself that sometimes life doesn't look how we expected it to, both in the long run & on a day to day basis. katie x x
Your videos are always such a comfort ❤ (and your hair is looking fab!) My PhD had been going pretty well, after a few months of hardship, but I'm giving my first lecture soon and I'm terrified I'll suck 😅 Take care, Holly! xx
Another fantastic vlog, thanks for sharing Holly! Well done on the new place and a new job, too! Great news indeed! I definitely feel you when it comes to the 'Shouldn't I be up at the crack of dawn and slave away' feeling. I don't/can't do that. I often struggle carving enough time out for it during the week as my full-time job keeps me super busy atm but, nevertheless, I handed in a draft of my lit review last Monday. Hoping to hand in the draft of the next chapter by mid-december 🤞🏻 Good luck with your research and writing process. Be gentle with yourself, you've done amazing so far!! 💪🏼
Love the video Holly! Glad to see you are doing so well. My PhD journey is full of ups and downs as I manage multiple other demands (FT work, parenting, health) and am learning that for me a max of 4 hours is the best I can give it in one day and am slowly accepting that it is ok!
This spoke to me today. I only got through a chapter of the book I'm reading for background info for my chapter two. I feel like I'm taking "too long", but I also have to remember to keep "chipping away at the boulder"...I like visual metaphor, so that helps me remember to keep doing the little things.
Hey lovely. I’m super proud of you and you absolutely do not suck! PhD is about total growth, not just that itty bit of writing! I also adore that jumper - pure sunshine! ☀️ My little proud moment today is that I found out this evening I got the travel grant I went for 😁 Much love ❤️ xx
Oh man I feel you! I think we'll look back on these times one day and see what great things we were doing and what a lot we achieved even if it doesn't feel that way right now. After surviving stage IV melanoma (last OP in 2017) thanks to immunotherapy I decided cancer and a PhD isn't enough so I added a baby to the mix 😂 I'm due in January and I actually believe (in my enthusiasm of youth) that it could help my PhD. We'll see 😁 At the moment I feel like I'm really growing with the challenges. Some days I feel like I'm failing on every level. Your vlogs give me hope and are fun to watch!
Wow. You are INCREDIBLE. I hope pregnancy is going well, and you feel okay! You can do anything you set your mind to, and I hope you both enjoy the PhD journey and this new adventure into parenthood. Thanks for sharing such an amazing story, pal x
I am behind and feeling it. However, small victories- I had a very successful lighting talk with participants for 2 other institutions.👏🏽 So, I gave up 6-8 hr writing days unless I am inspired or have a deadline. I did a writing Bootcamp about a month ago and fell into my writing practice. I commit to 30-45 minute windows 9am-2 on “deep work” days I have no other obligations, and at least 30 minutes either planning or reading on days I teach. Reading and note taking constitute “thinking” time so I put that into part of “deep work”. Slow and steady wins. I have found that weekly and daily list of tasks has help, and making space for whatever I enjoy doing.
I just took a two month extension for my annual progression, because I had surgery. I could have pushed through and got straight back to work - always have in the past - but no! I took a break. Good decision. 😊
My problem is I compare everything to what I could do at my peak work efficiency - when I last wrote a paper, for example and was very much in a flow. I think whatever you can do, consistently, is the best option for you!
@@HollyJaneYT I Agree with Carmem's comment above. 6-8 hours is a lot!!. I now include in these 6-8 working hours everything that should keep me well and " productive", including exercises and cooking decent meals. It had helped to overload the self-pressure. :) PS: please, keep vlogging
That took a few rewinds...if I get what you said....it's kinda like doing the Pomadoro timer technique for life/PhD.....little bits at a time will eventually add up? Shit, I know it's 4pm but after seeing that much coffee, gonna go make one....maybe three. Cheers. Keep on rolling...
Yes, it’s a recent discovery. I love parts of it. I’m not always so keen on the main speaker’s language and opinions at times, but overall I think the advice can be sound.
@@HollyJaneYT totally hear you, the nuance or range of experiences they can speak can be limited. I’ve listened since the beginning and actually do the program they have, which I think is quite good. There are certainly some misses I think, but I appreciate that they do try to say take what works and leave the rest.
Loved this video, as always you have humour and irreverency in spades. Random question: how do you film the swimming part? Do you get someone to video you, or do you have a fancy whosiewhatsit to do it for you? Yes, these are the questions that keep me awake at night. Whoseiwhatsits.

every time I watch a video of yours, I just want to be mates in real life😄💛

absolutely same!!
Haaiiii friends. Enjoy the silliness. Update me please on how your own PhD journey is going. Much love to you all, and thanks for watching 👀❤🤓

Best of luck with the PhD, pal! Hope it goes well for you ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for such a lovely comment, Debra 🥰 I hope the writing continues to go okay. You can do this!
Writing down your daily task accomplishments is also *behavior activation,* a CBT technique. Was reading about it last week
