Many people have the hippo as an extra car but fewer drive them day to day, it's amazing some are still around, like an Austin Princess 18-22 or Ambassador. They were so common in scrapyards without their wheels and we could easily study their corrosion weak spots.

I once left a box of stuff on the roof of one of these. The box stayed on the roof until I joined a dual carriageway, at which point the box slid off the roof and got wedged between the back window and the spare wheel. At this point, it became obvious what the electrically opening tailgate window was all about.

We have a Freelander 1 facelift V6 in black. Its a great car, but a bit thirsty. It has a black leather interior with a tear in the drivers seat in the same place as yours :) I sealed the sunroof with silicone as it leaked and when opened - wouldn't shut without a lot of pushing. I also drilled two holes in the boot cubby hole (which has a factory fitted harman kardon bass bin in it) as water leaks into the boot from the top and fills it up. Also keep a ODB2 unit in the car all the time to reset codes as it gets the engine light on occasionally).

.not into SUVs myself but if your going to buy one then a Freelander is a good choice. They were very popular at launch and really could cut it both in the high street or crossing Africa.
Roof tent would be cool.amd if your wife is on board then go for it, wives are not always supportive of spending money on cars. This really could be one of the family and create some fantastic memories.
I'm actually more interested in this than the Crown Vic.
I am keen to see more progress on the R3 200 Vi though.

I was surprised to see that you had taken the Freelander in part ex on the previous video, as an automatic SUV isn’t something you’d usually choose to buy.
However the Freelander isn’t like modern SUVs, it is a 4X4 capable of going off road, even if it’s not in Defender league.
Early Freelanders are becoming rare now and I agree that they could become future classics. Your example has been well cared for and has had a considerable amount of money spent on it and it deserves to be saved.
It has a few issues like window regulators etc but nothing too serious and it’s a practical car so why not keep it for a while. The Volvo was never meant to be a keeper and look what happened to that. The Freelander might become a channel favourite.

nice! Bought a 3 doors TD4 from 2004 last year with 246 000 miles (397 000km), well serviced and it is a real mule! Gets you everywhere (and I live in the French Alps), good one and off-road, perfect on the snow, struggling a bit to start when it's really cold and needs to know some basics to be repaired, but overall, very underrated!

My sister had one of these things 20 years ago. I used it a couple of times. It was a nice-looking, underpowered, fake off-road, truly massive disappointment - with a dodgy head gasket. If you can turn my scepticism about this machine around, then - truly - you are the genius I have believed you are since I started following your adventures ;)

Got 78k mile, one owner 05 td4 5 door March last year. Great car, I did get lucky, needed a bit of welding on the rear end, would advise to coat the underside in some rust proofing. Is pretty basic inside and Disco owners do look down on it but when they see the speed they tend to stay away from it 😂 also would advise the updated media radio replacement and using actual land rover parts. It is more expensive but you won’t be replacing the parts as Often but from the video you seem to know your stuff anyway.

  • @sleepycatpictures1176
    @sleepycatpictures1176 2 роки тому

That is a good buy. I would hang on to it. The CVT needs changing every 70,000 miles. If it seems to 'drag' on full lock when reversing, it's time to change the CVT. If not, the rest of the transmission will be wrecked. Auto's are best when off-roading. Without a low box, the clutches soon wear out.

Freelander is a very capable vehicle off road, and the td4 in auto with the hill descent is absolutely ideal combo. I've had a few and did a massive freelander commercial project on my driveway with Rover 220 turbo coupe seats (that bolt straight in), massive 205 80 16 mud tyres, lift kit, safari bull bar, all sorts on my channel as it used to be Freelander focused. Try and find a dash twin cup holder. Export spec, really useful.
My advice I tell everyone who buys a mk1, don't spend a penny on it until you do the rear diff, vcu and clutch. Unless the vehicle is mechanically drive train perfect, live with the faults until you fix the running gear but you know that yourself!

This is the first project car on the channel that turns me right off. Whoever thought brake lamps in the bumper was a good idea needs a brain scan to find out if they have one. A front wheel drive part time all wheel drive set up is hopeless. Just yesterday southern Ontario got a near record snow fall. The largest amount of snow in a single day since 1977. I had a 125 mile run I had to make. The old rear wheel drive Volvo 240 Estate had no problem at all. Almost every single vehicle with a front drive/part time all wheel drive system I saw was stranded in a snow bank. Having the rear wheels kick in when traction is suddenly lost is the worst thing going. Mind you, some were very graceful as they pirouetted across the motorway and into the snow bank.

The Suzuki grand vitara 1.9ddis is better as a 4x4 a true go anywhere vehicle and tough and reliable.

Looking forward to seeing the progress with the Freelander. But I absolutely loved Quentin. You did the most amazing job with him. I love the variety within your fleet. Makes things so interesting

Please please please do this as your first job. The rear tailgate has a gas ram to help it open. It’s underneath the tailgate. You must replace this (about £10). It makes the tailgate basically open itself. It stops yous pulling the tailgate handle off. They are getting very hard to find. Fitting the ram is a 30 second job. Then lube all the moving parts of the tailgate. 👍

This will be a very exciting project Matt, it's a good solid car to start with. You can get Harman Kardon Speaker Tweeters for the front doors, with grills included off eBay pretty cheap now. A full black leather interior would be smart, plus more practical, ease of use wipe down etc. Definitely plenty of opportunities for this one.

I was thinking Alpine, but harman/kardon is good!

Lovely Jubbly, I think it's just something different, bit like Quentin was different Matt, if everyone on UA-cam did the same Yawn "Audi" it would be very boring.

I reckon it's a good idea to have a 4x4 on the channel. It's another side to driving and opens up more opportunities for content. After all, it's your choice what you buy, not someone who happens to watch your channel. Good luck with it Matt🙂👍

Having moved to Vodafone from EE as they were going to stop free roaming, and then Vodafone did as well, that would be ideal, although they'd want YOU not YES
