In six years, never seen anyone in modern day break into the industry who wasent an intern. Internship are locked to sophomore/junior college students only, miss the window miss your chance.
You're right that AAA games studios use internship programs to bring in junior talent and rarely hire junior talent outside of their internship program. Thankfully, more and more games companies are opening up their internship programs to those who aren't currently students and that's going to increase. In this video I make the point that you can play the long game. Get some experience in a related field and then come back to the industry later in your career. I joined the games industry 5 years after graduating.
