Secondly, so I did some digging and found that “Cool With You” portrays the Roman/Greek mythological love story of “Cupid and Psyche” but instead of Cupid being a "he" they made him a "she" (played by Hoyeon). Cupid and Psyche is a story found in an ancient Roman novel called "Metamorphoses" by Apuleius (he was a Roman citizen and a latin-language writer). His most widely known work is his Latin based novel “Metamorphoses.” However, even though Apuleius wrote the story, I read that this same story can be found in many ancient Greek works of art, indicating that the story was FIRST told in Ancient Greece rather than Ancient Rome. I don't know I am not a historical researcher lol but anyways... the main takeaway from the story of Cupid (also known as Eros, a Greek name for Cupid) and Psyche is that Cupid (a god) fell in love with a mortal who he found to be the most beautiful woman ever. Not to mention, Psyche's beauty even rivaled with Cupid’s mother, Aphrodite’s beauty. It was said that Psyche’s beauty caused many men from many lands to travel just to be graced by the looks of her beauty. Aphrodite (also known as Venus which is her Roman name) is the “ Greek goddess of love and beauty” as we know in Greek Mythology. Therefore, she was both jealous and furious that a “mortal woman was the subject of the admiration of so many men.” Aphrodite then took it upon herself to tell Eros (Cupid) to “descend to the world of mortals and poison men’s souls so that they no longer desire Psyche.” Eros went to do as he was told however before he realized it, also found himself falling in love with Psyche’s beauty and failed to carry out his mother’s orders which led to Cupid actually being with Psyche. The whole story is actually really good if you ever decide to look into it and does have a happy ending! Moreover, the MV depicted some of this story along with some CHANGES and twists. Furthermore, you can see when Hoyeon looked at people and made them fall in love (1:24), you saw that she indeed was Cupid. Also, the painting all of them were looking at symbolizes the story of “Cupid and Psyche” which is an oil painting by François-Édouard Picot (2:24). It depicts the part of the tale when Cupid would leave Psyche’s bed-side before she woke up every morning as he would only visit her at night. That is also the same scene we saw Hoyeon in at 3:45. Now, at the end of Side A, Hoyeon (Cupid) goes outside naked looking up into the night sky assuringly asking to be granted her wish as a mortal that way she could live her life with Psyche as a mortal. Fast forward, in the b-side they are together until mystery man, Tony Leung (who appears to be Aphrodite/Venus) in the end. He turns Cupid (Hoyeon) back into Cupid again and making Psyche forget all the time they had shared together which is why he walks past her in the street and smiles at another woman. NWJNS MV has more of a darker turn than the original story which I like because they decided to still take their own route of things. But just know, Cupid actually DOES end up with Psyche in the very tale's end.
wow. gotta lot to say. first of all, i loveee symbolism. which is why i esp loved newjeans ditto, omg, and COOL WITH YOU! coincidentally i also love greek mythology, so i LOVE this concept even more. as i continued to rewatch both mvs to make my own theories, i realized "yeah, there has to be some type of tale this is based off of." because some of the things that were happening made me think they were representing something.. specific? idk. like the way newjeans were first living alongside the mortals but were continiously watching and seeing her fall in love w someone. the looks they gave just reminded me of when youre caught doing something youre not supposed to. like yk in those movies where youre supposed to act a certain way to avoid suspicion? but someone had been caught without even realizing it. its almost a pitiful look. then right after, newjeans all gathered up with completely different clothing (im assuming their original forms), watching her as a group. reading this made sm sense. cant wait for all the theory videos. stan new jeanssssss (SORRY FOR THE RANT ITS JUST SO INTERESTING)
