I feel that the criticism of this game not doing much to push or being bolder is completely valid. That said, there is something very nice about a game nailing the basics and just being straight up Good. It’s to the point and not filled with unnecessary fluff trying to hit some arbitrary length. Well made quality. Thanks for the review Mort.
Geist is often better translated as "spirit". Ghost is kind of a narrow word in English. Geist has connotations of "essence", "fundamental", or "soul" in the sense of like: "the soul of a city is its people." See: Zeitgeist, Weltgeist.
If it came out that Mort had a staff of 30 people, I still wouldn't believe he could get these reviews out this fast. You're a machine and deserve all your success, man.
According to the devs, crashing on steamdeck is linked to the memory leak caused by the newer version of the proton. According to their recommendation I tried switching to 8.0-5 and there were no more crashes with the demo. Valve is apparently supposed to force the launch of the full game with this version even.
@@bokocchop To be fair, the demo had some bugs still like some videos/slideshows didn't play on the 8.0-5 version of proton. So there's that. Hopefully they fixed that.
The game seems nice, I think I'll buy it in a few months. Personally, I think the prudent approach of publishing a shorter, less content-stuffed game, as their 1st try in the genre, was a good way to go about it, allowing for much less bugs and problems at publication. Hopefully the developers will be more experimental and ambitious in the future, if this one sells well enough and they decide to keep on making games of the same kind. Thanks for your videos!
I have no problem with this not trying to reinvent the Mimimi game formula. Since that studio no longer exists, that just left a gap for these types of games to continued to be made. Devolver/Artificer has filled that gap.
This game reminds me a little bit of the no too old "Partisans 1941" and "War Mongrels", love this kind o game since Desperado and Comandos came out when I was young!
"Geiststoff" is German. It's a translation of the English "mind stuff" or "mind dust". It's a philosophical term from the mid 1800s and means "the simple elements of which consciousness is composed of".
Shadow Gambit got a quite a bit of hate because of selectable characters on most maps as it really effected the game's difficulty. These games are balanced around the characters and their abilities so I understand why the developers did not want to go into that rabbit hole, as such I don't think that is a fair critism. Also, just based on this review, I saw quite a bit of ability types/situation which I did not encounter in neither Mimimi 's games, so I would not say that it does not try new things. As I read on the steam's forum, for steam deck, Proton 8.0-5 must be used to avoid crashes. In the end, I think this genre will always be a genre which will have a smaller player base, but in my book that's actually a good thing. So yeah, if you love the genre, buy it. Simple as that.
Seems a fair price and its great they have a demo. The fun part of stealth games to me is the high speed pattern recognition, sounds like this game doesn't have a ton of variation on that front.
Thanks for the video. In-game cutscenes aren't what they used to be. Even in FF they feel less cinematic. I think that's what makes these story board cutscenes stand out more. They break-up and punctuate the gameplay rather than blend in with it. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
Geiststoff is a compound of two words: "Geist" (meaning "spirit" or "ghost") and "Stoff" (meaning "substance" or "matter"). So it it basically means something like "spirit substance" or "spiritual material" or "ghost matter".
Pro tip for translating words online: when it doesn't work, try breaking the word into its individual components. In this case Geist is ghost or spirit and Stoff is material, so it's "Ghost-stuff", clearly meant to be "ectoplasm" or similar
I was so bummed with the closure of mimimi games. Desperados 3 and the shadow tactics games were excellent. With the commandos origins and this game coming out, it's good to see other studios putting games in this genre
Amusingly enough, Geiststoff seems to be such a hard (made up) word for people not used to germanic languages, that not only do they mispronounce it (which is perfectly understandable), but they also *mistype* it the way they mispronounce it. xD I've seen more than one written review type the word as "Geistoff". Jokes aside, while I don't play many stealth tactics games, I did like Shadow Tactics so I'll pick this one up too eventually.
What's funny to me is that a German would likely have gone with Geisterstoff instead, which would both be easier to pronounce and less likely to get mistyped.
@@rexsceleratorum1632 While it's true enough that English nominally ekes out an existence on the far western end of the germanic language tree, that's more of an honorary position by now. In reality, as a famous quote suggests, it's just the language that steals words from every other language it comes across. I'm not entirely serious btw, just in case it didn't come across. ; )
Honestly, I've been playing PC games for a while (since the early '90s), and I don't mind innovation-in fact, I appreciate it. However, I've come to value polish more. Give me solid, perfected gameplay and a good story over ambitious gameplay most of the time, say 70/30. That being said, I do understand the importance of experimentation; I just tend to buy those games later, like six months or so after release, when most of the major bugs have been patched or when the game is inexpensive at launch.
Sounds like a good start in the genre, since it's pretty different from the Showgunners gameplay except the camera. Hopefully they will innovate more if they do another stealth'em up like this
This game seems like my type of game! If any devs are reading and wondering how they could "shoot for the moon a little bit". I'd like to play a stealth strategy game where the missions are either in an open explorable world, either open world or something like Baldurs Gate. I think it'd also mix well with a narrative game. Imagine something like Disco Elysium, where one could stealthily infiltrate places of interest!
I was worried about the price but $30 seems fair for this genre/length of game. Gonna check out the demo first but I pretty sure this is gonna be a buy for me! Hopefully Artificer can become the new "stealth guys" because I really do love those types of games. I'll have to go back and check out Showgunners at some point too.
I loved Show Gunners. I doubt I would have ever heard of it, if it weren't for you. I played desperados 3 which looks similar to this. I played through it but didn't love the genre. I hope they make another game in the style of Show Gunners.
10-15 hours is pretty much what I was looking for. I got burned out hard by Desperados 3 due to its length and relatively low variety, and ended up dropping it when the game kept throwing maps with 100+ enemies at me.
While I absolutely enjoy those kind of games and this looks pretty good, I‘m a little disappointed in how innovation averse that genre is. I mean apart from the change of setting from wild west to alternative WW2, it sounds like every feature of this game was already in Desperados 3, which is almost five years old. It looks good though, so i‘ll probably try it.
I think there is some overlooking of the characters' abilities. Rosa, the green attired chemist, can dissolve an enemy body with her default melee attack, which takes away a major part of this genre; hiding bodies. That and I've noticed several reviewers being dissapointed at Mimimi allowing players to select their own characters for most missions, since this meant the missions couldn't be tailor made for certain abilities. From what I've heard, this genre tends to not sell well, so it could be hard to get a new audience while not pissing off the old guard.
Tldr : For fans of "Commandos"......this is an EASY buy. Commandos, Shadow Tactics, Desperados 3, Shadow Gambit plays the same....and other than SG, all the others have to be completed with the same set of characters......so I don't see how that is a negative. 10 levels with difficulty settings should easily offer AT LEAST 15+ hours of game play. This is anyways a niche genere.....but within its limited player base, it should be a resounding hit.
Hi Mortismal Gaming, Idk if you read comments but how do you get through games that are not good? or are all the games you choose to review something you know you would probably like or do you just never review games you tried but never 100%.
Well I have the luxury of choosing games Im already interested in from the start so that helps, but otherwise it's about the same as any other job. You're not gonna love every day of work, but its still gotta get done.
@@MortismalGaming You are my goat mortismal gaming thanks for your response!!! Came for the BG3 and stayed for the rest of your crpg content. Thank you for all that you do and the effort you put into your videos. :^)
Game looks interesting but man they really did take a lot of stuff from the Mimimi games. Even the distortion signalling the sound you make when you run and the use of solid/stripes and 'filling in' for the sightlines is straight out of Mimimi. I'm fairly sure they've even used the same colour scheme.
Would you rather they overturn the mechanics for an already niche genre, and hope it works? Cause these games have a habit of not selling well. What mechanic could they replace full and partial sight cones with similar depth that would be intuitive?
I just played and platinum Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time since I preordered and then cancelled it over 3 1/2 years ago. It was very good and now it’s time for the dlc.
this is the easiest game among all of these real time tactics games. most of the heroes are overpowered and when combined together you just obliterate all the enemies even on hard difficulty

Well said.
Within its limited player base it should be hit.
It helps this genre is quite niche. We're not talking another triple A loot driven open world game. ;)
"Geiststoff" is a made-up German word that best translates as "ghost substance" or "spirit substance", but it's funnier to go with "ghost stuff".
Is it Neil Cicierega 'Bustin' ghost stuff or regular ghost stuff?
Geist is not just ghost, but also spirit. Think of Hegel‘s Weltgeist.
Ectoplasm.

Nothing wrong with a short game that does everything its supposed to. More developers should take notes.
