I love Christy's voice on this classic song, but I must admit I don't care much for the way he changed some of the lyrics around. I think it's fully reasonable to love both The Pogues and Christy's version of this song. :)

Of course I know that, but I think he ruined it still, the song is a meaningful song and his changes were bad. Even changing it to "I turned my eyes away and thought about you" doesn't seem to have the same effect as "I turned my face away and dreamed about you".
He does not sing it better than Shane, there's something about Shane that make him perfect for this song. I hated his changing of lyrics and ayr to parts where it was not needed, I know he was trying to make it his own but it didn't work whatsoever.

It's not uncommon for Irish/Folk singers to alter lyrics. A lot of them, even Shane, change the words from one performance to another.
