I’m torn between these two bikes I live less than 100 feet from a trail. I wish the R version had lights and the digital dash, don’t like how it has no key just a push button ignition … I could always change the gearing and tires on the 300 to make it more off road, although it seems to be doing just fine.
@backyardscaler After we removed the baffle in the intake, changed the gearing, and added real dirt tires, the 300 (street legal one ) almost feels like the R model. However, the non R model still has softer feeling suspension and weighs more. (It feels heavier than the R model when you crash and have to pick it up.) Me personally, I ride down my street to the trails on the R since it's insanely quiet and very capable. Hope that helps some..
go with the R you can make it street legal easily and i saw one inperson brand new differnt looking alittle nicer and no secondary thorrtle plate alredy
I have a 2020 Suzuki DRZ400 and a 2024 KLX300. Online a lot of people saying the KLX is better because of 6 speed and fuel injection. I have never had a problem with the DRZ carb and the bike is so much more powerful. The DRZ suspension is also better, the KLX is too soft and the bike is smaller, more cramped for a 6ft rider. When I walk out to my garage I pick the DRZ nine times out of ten just because it’s so much more enjoyable to ride with the extra torque and power, get more of a rush. I tuned the KLX into my beater bike, loan to friends, etc.
Same crazy dust as we had on Memorial Day weekend. You need a WolfSnout! Good rides on those KLX's! Did Dad at least change the tires to something more capable than those stinking D605's? I was running the Tusk D-Sports on my KLX300 when I was there.
Thank you for the advice! He wants to change the tires so maybe we can look into TUSK D sport. We're going again this weekend but with the same setup on both machines for now.
I was able to ride both and noticed that the 300R feels a bit more responsive, the seat is not as comfy as the street bike. The tires were the biggest difference between them. We changed to a 48 tooth rear sprocket from the 40 tooth stock one on the street bike as well. I think with a little tweaking it will feel very similar to the 300R

More Parts fit the 300R as well
Besides the 2023 XR150, I also have a 2023 KLX 300.
That's a fine combination of machines!

Seems pretty capable to me 👍
It really is!
Is the 300R faster or the same?
