I enjoy cold starting even more than I enjoy blowing stuff up. The spinning-up of APUs and engines and rotor blades is so satisfying 🙂

Wags, another great video as always! The excitement is killing me! One thing I think needs to be said: I know it's an area that many of us tend to overlook, but have to say a huge "Well done!" to the team that did the sounds for this (and other) aircraft. That low, bassy "whoom" as the engines started gave me chills.

  • @Dravira

You and the ED team are killing it. I started on DCS almost 10 years ago and never expected an apache or a viper. I am so happy that we get to experience these since many of us will never get to experience it IRL. We the community can not thank you all enough for the countless hours and hard work. Sky is the limit! On and forward.

For years, had the honor of turning wrenches on Apaches for the famous 1-1 Gunfighters. I actually had in a packet to go to WO flight school to try to get an Apache seat and had a very solid packet. One morning, playing soccer for PT, I got my leg twisted up when 3 of us went for the ball at the same time and my right knee was dislocated. That ended my service and my hopes for flying an Apache. Many times I've been in the hangar or just outside on the flight line and watched as the birds would spin up. I always wondered what they were doing and how they were doing it. Thanks you guys, I will at least know that much.

This is absolutely amazing, the accuracy is spot on. Well, as a AH64 crew chief for 13 y they almost never turn on without some bogus faults.
Some the newer D models have integrated CMWS that includes it in the software. This makes the CMWS control box unnecessary and out of view.
The only thing your missing is the crew chief...

Very good tutorial, After studying it, I picked up more details than you actually explain. You know exactly what you are doing, but some of us have no clue. So I was paying very close detail to which keys on the RMFD you were clicking and writing down in addition to why you were pressing certain keys which helped me understand more so how to operate the Right MFD to go through the set up screens for engine and weapon and global positioning data. Thanks very much this makes it easier to understand how to really get the most experience out of what you are doing when cold starting this awesome module!

@@MattWagner No doubt I have been saving all of your videos and currently going through each in depth to better understand each function thoroughly ! It took me 3 hrs to break down this cold start video into my own cold start to better understand navigating around that MFD for all the different functions and for what they are used for! I know the Left and right MFDs are very important for data information on whats going with the aircraft, as well as weapon status and other stuff. I dont know if it has an active radar system to detect the position of enemy vehicles and personal hence that large AF Radar dome above the the rotor blades, but I guess that is another tutorial! I love all the combined data I get from both you and Cosmos!

Another technique for start-up after the APU is on (once called the DMS Sweep), especially when working with a live CPG, use the top level menu page as a guide on one MPD while pressing buttons on the other MPD; the front seat can start with one side and work clockwise, and back seat start on the other side of the top level page and go counter-clockwise, or vice versa. Point being, you get things up and running faster, and the PC can check the work of the other pilot by the time the INUs align. When in doubt, you can always run home to "mommy" by pressing the M button. Eventually, you learn where everything is in the menu hierarchy and the cockpit becomes less of an MPD piñata.

I could be mis-remembering (it's been a minute since I've pre-flighted an AH-64D), but I think the door latch lever is reversed. Vertical = Unlocked and Horizontal = Locked (both open and closed). Also, there's no key in the throttle-quadrant power selector so the engines wouldn't actually start (APU would, but not engines).

@@oilers8990 what would be the point of us adding a BUCS test when the BUCS isn’t really replicated in game.
ED is making a video game, not a cockpit trainer for the army. Doesn’t make a lot of sense for EVERY SINGLE THING to be replicated to the gnats ass. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The 3D models looks so amazing. Is there a "making of" somewhere that shows how these models are made (I am especially interested in the interior 3D models and what work flow and software is used)? Thank you very much!

I bet they use either 3DS Max or Blender.

Modelling wise it's not that hard (if we are just talking about the interior that is). Just a lot of buttons and detail but the basic shapes are ''relatively simple''. I think the hardest part if you want to try this yourself would be to find good reference. They probably use 3dsMax or Maya. Doubt it's Blender as it's not (yet) really industry standard. But Blender would work and is free so you can go with that. Texturing probably Substance Painter. There are other tools out there for that, but Substance painter, imo, is the best. Don't bother with Photoshop for PBR texturing, you'll only torture yourself. But you could use Photoshop or Gimp to create alphas and stencils you could then use in Substance Painter.
Workflow wise. Making a rough blockout in the modelling software to get the scale and basic shapes correct. ED might actually use scanning data of a real cockpit but not a 100% sure about that. If you could do that tho that would save you a lot of time getting scale and detail correct. Using that to make a high poly model. Make a low poly model. Unwrap the low and split it up in several UVs. Bake high on low. And start texturing.

@@bd5067 Yes, I was just interested in their particular workflow (I am working with CAD and also 3D packages like Maya and 3ds Max since the 90s professionally). You mentioned scanning: what hardware/software do you mean that is suited for scanning cockpit interiors and getting data to create low-poly, real-time rendering suited 3D models? I once had to work with scanned "point clouds". Could as well have started from scratch in a CAD package: a huge amount of work back then. But maybe there are fast, tailor made workflows for that nowadays?

@@SolidWorksCAD3D It's a 3D laser scan of different parts of the cockpit that the devs can then use as a 3D reference for their models. It does not work as it's own 3D model though

A slight heads up, when calibrating the boresight I had slide forward in my seat to get my head/headtracker low enough for the LOS indicator to be in the center of the Boresight.
It's seems it's a bit to much offset perhaps?

Great video. Won’t be to bad to get going in a hurry it seems. Other than waypoint setting up.
