My grandma used to reminisce about when Elizabeth married Philip - the nation had just come out of the horrors of six years of war and bloodshed and how it cheered everyone up to have the lovely dark-haired princess marrying her handsome blonde war hero suitor, (who was a bona fide prince into the bargain) and how they seemed to be the symbol of a new beginning

Value them well because these people are genuine. I was so impressed with their visit to the Republic over the last few days. HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will be 90 years old on friday! The only man who's spent 64 years walking 2 paces behind his wife! I'm not a royalist but I have a great deal of admiration for this man.He wasn't even allowed to give his children his family name instead he had to 'go' with Windsor.And yes,he's managed a fair number of 'gaffes' down the years which in today's world are seen as 'racist',which is more than unfortunate.But I'm still gonna wish the old duffer a Happy 90th!

@EleLoris It takes two to make a marriage work, right? Would they have lasted 60+ years as a couple if Prince Philip didn't feel something for her? What kind of man would give up a sport that he loves very much and continues to exercise even at 90 years old just to stay alive so that he could support his wife. If that is merely out of a sense of duty, then why give so much of yourself to another person. If their relationship is not love then I don't know what else it is.

I'm just curious and please don't take it personally... but are you this pessimistic towards everyone around you? Truth is that when it comes to feelings, people always have the benefit of the doubt. Prince Philip and the Queen are still married after all these years without any concrete evidence of grave unhappiness. Hence, they have the benefit of the doubt of being in love.

@tatigugu1 Their other two kids. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have 4 kids. Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and Prince Edward. The two kids in the picture are Andrew and Edward.

@TheCaveCrew She is rightly Queen, as Prince William will be rightly King when the time comes. Of the two brothers the eldest was next in line for the throne, so he was crowned King. However, if he died, or became unfit for the role of King, then the next in line for the throne would be the younger brother. This is what happened according to the film, the eldest brother gave it up because he was a) not suited for the role and b) wanted to marry a divorcee... big no no in the church!

@8y8use8labels8 This is because of the male dominated system in the monarchy (whish historically favoured male monarchs because of their more likely victories in battles). Males in line to the throne take precident over females, and male monarchs take precident over female monarchs. This means that a king is allowed to call his wife 'queen' although she is not queen in her own right, but any queen born in her own right cannot call her husband 'king'.

There is no doubt what she saw in him. He was one of the few who looked like a prince. She was petite and beautiful. A much more happening couple than William and Kate. But it is not the perfect love story the PR machine makes you believe. Over the years, there have been many suggestions that he was not loyal.

Because he was not born into the Royal Family, he married into it. Prince William, Charles ' firstborn , will be King, but Kate , his wife, is not going to be Queen.
