    I was on the QE2 when that wave struck. The passenger areas were empty, all of us had been confined to our cabins by Captain Ron Warwick. I had gone out on deckl around 30 minutes before and the wind was so strong I was frightened to go more than 1 step with my hands holding the doorframe, before I returned inside. Around 10 minutes later the crew locked all the doors leading to the deck...and we were all asked to return to our cabins. I believe the anti-flood doors were also lowered between corridor areas. After the storm, there was a fair bit of damage to the ships common areas. However, in no way were the passengers eating and drinking and the band playing even 30 minutes before the wave hit.

    I was there too. I was a wine steward sitting in the crew bar, all the rest of the crew had gone to bed as it was starting to get a wee bit scary. I was very drunk. When we hit the big one the watertight doors buckled and water pissed in. I'm sat there and the captain and several officers came in to inspect the damage, all in overalls...so I knew it was serious as I'd never seen them wearing that before. They barely glanced at the young and very drunk idiot in the corner with water sloshing around his feet and instead proceeded to go check out the damage. I remember thinking I'd best be off to bed as things seemed very serious all of a sudden, so I sloped off. We stayed over in NY and assessed the damage. The crew and passengers all got a certificate stating we'd survived hitting a tidal wave. Great PR...passengers loved it, something to brag about. I've still got mine in the attic at my folk's house. They were good times :)

    I wish they would do one on the SS Michelangelo's incident. In 1965, she was hit by a rogue wave that tore open her forward aluminum superstructure like tinfoil, causing way more extreme damage than this. The ship arrived in New York looking like a huge bomb had gone off. That incident and the fact QE2's own aluminum structure was really costly to maintain, is why Cunard built the Queen Mary 2 with traditional steel superstructure, despite the heavier weight it added.

    i was on the ship when the wave occurred, and nobody was in the public areas. i was in my canin with some friends, and everybody else was in there cabins aswell. the ship went through one giant wave, me being on a window cabin. the window had been flushed with the wave, i was also on the high decks of the ship. nobody new how big the wave was, but it was terrifying. as the morning came, i returned to the public areas to see furniture everywhere. there was one bathroom i went in, and the toilit seat was smashed on the floor. it was a terrifuing experience, but it could have been way worse.

    This is a good evidence that the QE2 was a proper ocean liner. What if an average cruise ship hits a 33 metre high wave? It was a little chaos onboard the Anthem of the Seas when she hit 10 metre waves in february 2016 and that ship has more than twice the tonnage of the QE2. This is one reason why I have a great passion for ocean liners.

    • @sealover5861
      @sealover5861 7 років тому +1

      The design of the ocean liners is the other and actually the most important reason why I love them. All of them weren't big and fast like the QE2, and some of these beautiful ships were still built in the early 1970's, like the former NAL-liner MS Vistafjord (1972), later renamed Caronia, Saga Ruby and Oasia. Unfortunately this ship is sold for scrap now. I don't actually like the exterior design of the new large cruise ships, they look too fat and too boxy.

    • @leDespicable

      Well, that´s a matter of opinion. Many People don´t like the Oasis Class of Royal Caribbean, because they have so many balconys and look like a giant Hotel, but I still think that the ships have a beautiful side Profile. They may be very big, but from the side they still look like an actual ship, unlike other ships like the Norwegian Epic which have vertical walls at the Stern from the water line all the way to the top. And the Oasis Class has no strange clunky structures, like that "Thing" built on top of the Bridge of the Epic...

    The QE2 was hit just two years after my then seven-year-old son and I crossed in 1993 on his first trip to the UK, so we followed the 1995 wave story with much interest. I remember reading that that grand piano in the Queen's Grill, which was bolted to the floor, broke loose and crashed across the width of the room to the opposite wall.
    We did another transatlantic QE2 crossing in 2003 before she was sold. That was the summer that NYC had the huge blackout, which was reported in the ship's morning paper. We planned to spend a few days in NYC and had a reservation at the Plaza, but with all their electricity knocked out the hotel had passed out pillows and blankets and sent their guests across the street to sleep in Central Park. I didn't know sleeping rough was so expensive! We had no idea whether we'd have a place to stay. Luckily by the time the ship docked the city power was restored and our room was OK, although Plaza employees were still collecting bedding from the park.

    The major difference between an Ocean Liner design and a Cruise Ship design -- Ocean Liner hulls are considerably thicker and more rigid, they ride lower in the water to gain support and stability, and their bows tend to be longer and extend higher, making it much easier to pierce through very large waves and gain buoyancy through waves that exceed hull height. Even a side hit by such a large wave would have been unlikely to fully capsize this vessel, due to its deep displacement hull design. That kind of wave would have made short work of the standard cruise ship designs preferred today.
    There are currently only a few passenger vessels that are Ocean Liner deep displacement hulls operating today. Queen Mary 2 is one, now that Queen Elizabeth 2 has been retired. These were remarkably well constructed, and expensive, designs that have the robustness to weather the worst conceivable storms and all but the largest ever detected ocean waves.

      @@deborahpeeples1439 Hi Deborah; thank you for the compliment!
      I do so enjoy reviewing the extraordinary engineering of these older and more expensive vessels and lament their passing out of fashion as a form of convenient travel. With global WIFI and remote work and zoom meetups, one could all but avoid a fast and usually uncomfortable intercontinental aircraft flight in favor of transportation more at ease, spacious, and enjoyable -- and perhaps equally affordable -- aboard one of these remarkable Passenger Liner style vessels. So, perhaps there will come a time in our modern age when work/life balance and convenient interconnectedness revitalizes this mode of travel for more than the niche client... where people can once again revel in "the journeys of life" moreso than merely leaping as quickly as possible to each "destination."
      Moreso than QM2, QE2 had some engineering features that made it even more impervious to easy water incursion above its primary hull, which you can observe along its sides, for virtually the entire length of the craft. While QM2 began the trend toward sliding glass door accesses on topside infrastructure -- to be sure, a significant weakness point in engineering should any flanking superwave avoid actions by captain and crew to align against slicing bow structures. But people today expect hotel-like room views everywhere, with balconies that are difficult to reinforce against the potential 100 ton impact of a side swiper -- otherwise, these vessels were nearly as impractical to skuttle or sink as many of the best and largest navy vessels are today, and in fact have a better safety profile historically (outside of wartime) than intercontinental air or, indeed, automobile travel.
      In any case, hats off to the marvelous and thoughtful engineering that went in to this mode of travel on particularly these two amazing ships, QM2 and QE2.

      I too was aboard as Cruise Sales Manager and the re-creation here is ridiculous. As Terry mentioned, (hello Terry) we’d been pitching and rolling about for quite a while. I lived on 5 deck near G stairway, and was very bad back there. I’m sure it was worse in the forward section though. Of course I was in bed, and of course unable to sleep.
      As I laid in bed, I watched on my TV the (LIVE) camera view from the bridge. I remember when “it” hit, I watched on the TV the entire fo’c’sle deck do under, and when it came up the shipped shuddered terribly, which made horrible cracking and bending noises in and around my cabin. For the first and only time aboard ship, I feared for my safety, but after several minutes things started to get better. And yes, we actually had an overnight in NYC due to the need of the coast guard (?) needing to inspect the ship for seaworthiness. We were cleared to sail, and went right back to Southampton the next day. Fun to have an overnight in NYC though. By the way... I wouldn’t at all call this a rogue wave. We’d been tossing quite badly for a while. It certainly didn’t come out of nowhere.

    • @deborahpeeples1439
      @deborahpeeples1439 3 роки тому +2

      Appreciated your account, Terry. I was passenger on HAL ship, sailing from Bar Harbor, Maine to Halifax, NS (rough) and then from Halifax back to St John's, NB (very rough) through the remains of Hurricane Luis. Leaving Halifax the captain came on the PA and told us to clear all surfaces, put everything in drawers. We were locked in/battened down/no access outside. They served supper, but all live entertainment was cancelled. We had a Coast Guard escort. There were trays of green apples and saltines, and barf bag dispensers everywhere. My family was knocked out with every seasick medicine available, but I couldn't sleep, so rambled around the ship. All the way forward the theatre was showing an action movie, I think it was one of the Die Hard series. There were only about a dozen of us there, eating popcorn and talking more than watching. The ship would rise and drop so that our bums left the seats, and the winds howling through the hawsers (sp?, anchor chain holes) was deafening. We all laughed about it being a surround sound, you-are-there, movie going experience. I slept on the cabin floor (vs top bunk!!) that night, and could feel the sea change when we headed north into the Bay of Fundy. There was talk all over the next day or two about the QEII and the rogue wave. The story was that her bow and main staircase had been damaged. It's most interesting to read the memories of survivors. Thx for sharing!!

      It's okay, I find her to be one of the most interesting ocean liners built. Cunard's eagerness for her to take up the transatlantic passage from her predecessors when travel by sea was at an all time low is incredible. It was a massive gamble for Cunard. If QE2 failed them the entire company went down the toilet and would not be here today, as a matter of fact QE2 actually saved Cunard, she became increasingly popular and kept the Cunard Line bankrolling for over 49 years of service. Truly the great thing about her was that her design had made her easily upgradeable, in fact over the course of her life she had over 9 refits!!! It's too bad she languishes away in Dubai as a floating hulk with all of her luxuries covered in a thick layer of dust and rot thats stinks from constant neglect and loneliness.

      leDespicable Also... Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass du deutsch bist, von daher schreibe ich jetzt auf deutsch.
      Du kennst ja sicherlich den LASH-Carrier MS München, der angeblich von einer Monsterwelle versenkt worden sein soll. Und wir sprechen hier nicht von beschädigt sondern eirklich versenkt. Es ist also schon krass (selbst für eine Monsterwelle) einen 50.000 Tonner zu versenken. Von daher bezweifle ich stark, dass solch eine Welle das Schiff versenkt hat. Die Welle hätte mit 30m Höhe das Schiff zwar beschädigt, allerdings noch lange nicht versenkt. Und die QE2 hat ja auch eine Montserwelle scheinbar pberlebt die 33m hoch war. Ich glaube zear, dass der Hurrikan die Welle so hoch aufgepeitscht hat, jedoch ist es ja immer noch eine Welle.

    • @leDespicable
      @leDespicable 5 років тому

      Schon klar. Allerdings werden Wellen in der Höhe ja trotzdem als Freak Waves bezeichnet, weil sie aus der Reihe tanzen. Bei Schiffen wie der München muss die Welle ja nur die Brücke lahmlegen, dann ist die Situation sehr schnell brenzlig.

    • @chrisi06
      @chrisi06 5 років тому

      leDespicable Die MS München war ein hochseetüchtiges Schiff, dass solche Stürme schon öfters überstanden hat. Selbst wenn die Brücke von einer Welle lahmgelegt worden wäre, hätte das Schiff immer noch tagelang weitertreiben können. Man hätte das Schiff auch vom Maschinenraum aus steuern können. Aber die Frage ist, dass wenn es eine Welle wäre, sie wirklich die Brücke zerlegt hätte. Denn Schiffe wie die RMS Olympic wurden auch von Monsterwellen getroffen, auch die QE2 konnte trotzdem weiterfahren. Ich glaube deshalb nicht, dass das Schicksal der München wirklich von einer Monterwelle besiegelt worden war.

      No. It's simply the second ship to bear that name. Not named after the current Queen. It's the same with the Queen Mary 2. Both the QE and QM ran a passenger service between Southampton and New York from the late 1930's up to about 1968/9. QE1 was sold in 1968 but it caught fire and sank in Hong Kong harbour in 1972. Cunard replaced it with the QE2 in 1969. QM1 was retired in 1967, sold in 1968 and is now a floating hotel/museum and tourist attraction in Long Beach California. RMS QM2 entered service in 2004. Hope that helps:-)

      He's a captain with years upon years of experience in harsh seas such as the North Atlantic in winter. This is nothing new to him. While he admitted that this one particular wave was the biggest wave he had ever seen, it's all about keeping things professional. The captain is responsible for everyone on the ship including the ship itself. Screaming would have helped no one. Taking the best possible action as soon as possible would.

In fact, you made well-honed piece that hangs together well. tbh I noticed things that were regretfully left out by focusing on one aspect, specifically _how the pace of the visual and musical footage dovetails increasingly through the work, until the two combine into a single thread_ at the end. Good editing and a fine accomplishment!
