The area seems to have a history of big fires associated with rubber. In the 60's my parents lived next door to the London Rubber Company which was at the Croydon end of Mitcham Common. It regularly caught fire and I can certainly recall my mother washing curtains and nets for days afterwards to get rid of the smog and smell.
