My first sparring accident - Learn from my misfortune

  • Grappling in HEMA can be quite dangerous if you mess up your footwork. Got my knee twisted in a throw and am now grounded for a while, dealing with an injured ligament and resulting inflammation. Fortunately no permanent damage but definitely a painful lesson.
    How to have a better chance of preventing such mishaps:
    1.) Practice proper stances, steps and body posture frequently
    2.) Avoid high intensity sparring before you've mastered the basics
    3.) Don't skip or shorten your warmup and stretching routine
    4.) Be cautious with grappling, do throws and joint locks in a slow-controlled manner first before attempting free play

      ***** nahh you aint getting used to pain. So weakness isn't leaving your body.
      And i dont think that pain is the real reason for someome to change his footwork or watch out. If he is hammerimg something and he hammers his finger by accident, then if he thinks, well what a stupid hammer then nothing will change. If he thinks, maybe i aim better next time then he will learn. Pain only helps with realizing your doing it wrong. Actually accepting that you did something wrong is the important part in learning anything.

    I was sparring with a kid about a year younger than me and 1-2 belts under my rank once when I was still in ATA. He went for a jump kick at the same time I went for a front kick to the stomach, and since I didn't anticipate the jump, he jumped really quickly and really high and as I was spooling up the kick, my knee met his crotch while he was midair. His kick just barely missed my crotch as well, hitting the sensitive part of my inner thigh. It kinda hurt but I could tell he was in worse condition. I felt bad, he was laying on the floor. But he was a tough kid and he got back up, we finished our sparring match honorably and only used punches/arm maneuvers for safety. I apologized like crazy but he wasn't mad, saying it was his fault for the jump kick attempt and he should have tried to block. We remained friends throughout the time we were in the classes. Not sure if he's still in it right now as I've been out for 2 years. Other than that that's my only sparring incident.

    • @TheTriforceCrusader
      @TheTriforceCrusader 8 років тому

      Tribaldragon1 In our class, kicks to the head, especially the face, were not allowed. Any sort of jarring strike to the head was an automatic round forfeit. I only made it to red belt too, but I would liked to have kept going if I had the choice.

    • @moonrazk
      @moonrazk 9 років тому +22

      Watch the video, his "opponent" had his dagger by his throat at the end of the movement, he'd be dead right there.
      But if you mean if he went to battle as he is now, I think he'd be able to fight but very poorly since at least he'd be limping.

      tulp35000 When I was leaving the bus a guy pushed me, the way I landed my left foot pretty much sprained my ankle. Later the same day I tripped and well because I didnt want to land on my foot that hurt I made a very awkward step that basically ended with me spraining my OTHER ankle. It wasn't a very good day.

    We're evolutive beings crafted to learn from our mistakes. That's why the first thing we always think is: "it won't happen to me, it happens to other people but won't to me". Hidden tricky brain mechanism to lure us into purposely ignoring what we've already learnt and still trying it out.
    The second, but the most important point, is that an amazing amount of knee and joint injuries began to appear as a result of practicing sports on artificial surfaces. We haven't evolved *that* much yet :-)
    Cheers mate, I know it's a year and a half old video but still a very good one.

    Sorry to hear that Skall. I know that pain too. I had a similar injury to my right knee and it took a few years before I was able to be on my feet for more than a few hours without that knee starting to ache. If they prescribe Physiotherapy....DO IT!!! I hate physio but it works, and you wanna make sure you get full strength and mobility back as early as possible...because its harder to do later on. Get well man.

    You're well on your way to becoming one of my favourite UA-camrs. I've always had the fantasy of learning more about medieval "western" martial arts and all the techniques, tools, etc. that are a part of it-- at I can at least variously experience it through you and your channel. Maybe a couple of weeks worth of historical content and discussions would be a welcomed addition to your library.
    But keep at it, don't be discouraged, and stay careful. Creating content on UA-cam difficult and takes a toll on lives, work, relationships, and quality of life -- and that's true of UA-camrs who aren't also risking physical damage.

    Thank you so much for telling us what happened, and I hope you get better soon! This is an important message to the martial arts community, we get injured because of silly mistakes; just yesterday I sprained my thumb tendon while sparring, it happens to all of us. Atleast you will have a full recovery, at my second day at this specific HEMA club (about 3 months ago) in longsword wrestling, someone was thrown over their ankle at a poor angle and it had a 90 degree break. Fortunatly, they are still able to observe lessons and correct technique. Don't think this only happens to you, this guy has been practicing longsword for over 30 years. Get well.

    Sorry to hear about your injury. Remarkable that it's the first real injury you've had in training though! I've been to the doctor many times myself for sprains, hyperextensions and the like. Don't beat yourself up too much. Sounds like you've pinpointed the problem and know what to do to fix it. That's the best kind of injury you can hope for. That was a sweet throw your friend did by the way. Props to him.
