This came to mind when you were talking about the Go scene and the fact that Marta beats everyone by not playing life as a game, and not trying to win, but just by following her good heart: I think the ultimate confirmation of this is that, if she had simply followed her own instincts and her conscience from the beginning, Harlan would still be alive and none of the events of the movie would have even happened. Harlan is a very likeable character and a kind man, but he can also be guilty (to a lesser extent than his family) of playing games and convoluting things. Sometimes this works, as with his method of telling Linda to leave her husband. But in this case, it causes his death and sets all of this mess into motion. The Go scene, where he complains that even HE can't ever beat Marta, is a wonderful foreshadowing of that reveal. Long story short, everyone should have just listened to Marta from the beginning 😤
You did not go overboard! Honestly, you could have easily done another hour on this movie. :) I'm so glad I saw it in the theater with a packed crowd (only the one time, though, hehe) because it really was the rare mystery that was not based on an existing book so everyone was legitimately trying to follow and figure it out. Easily one of the most fun theater experiences I've had in recent years.
acidnova I pretty much experienced the full spectrum of packed theatres and nearly empty ones (near the end of the theatrical run) and it was so much fun every time! Also, certain lines got laughs basically every time I saw it (like the “We have no idea” line about Great Nana Thrombey). I want to know if Rian has an extended version though because I want to see those scenes from Michael Shannon’s subplot. Maybe he could combine them into a short? GIVE IT UP, RIAN! 🤣😍🔥
@@LadyJenevia The deleted scenes are available on youtube but unfortunately don't actually feature more Michael Shannon but rather Riki Lindhome (who unfortunately got mostly cut out of the movie). Well my analysis is already 1 hour and 18 minutes long. I had to split it into four parts because it kept getting copyright blocked when I tried to upload it as one long video essay. 🙃
Great essay series! I enjoyed the analysis of the family resemblances, I totally didn't pick up on that when I was watching it. I don't get why you're so generous with your interpretation of Meg's character. Where I come from you don't snitch like that, giving up Marta's mom was a huge breach of trust and not something that you'd do in passing. She clearly sides with her class interests over her political ones and does whatever it takes to maintain the status quo.
Because I’m judging it from the perspective of analysing how she is presented as a character in a fictional story on film and how her material varies from the rest of her family. If she was a real person and she had slighted me or my family to that level, I would mostly run on emotion and I would never ever be her friend after that. 😆
@@LadyJenevia I agree with that sentiment 100% lol, no one messes with mama! She hangs up on Marta as soon as she doesn't give in and starts feeding Meg the same lines about taking care of her and her family. Harlan and his mother were immigrants themselves. Thus, no matter how rich he got, Harlan was able to stay humble, and was able to recognize that Marta's roots as the daughter of an undocumented immigrant made her a lot more humble than all his children and grandchildren combined, and more worthy as an heir.
There's a great video about the Go scene by Lord Ravenscraft. He analyzes the symbolism of the Go game and what it illustrates about both characters. I wonder if the next Blanc mystery will have the lead be an asian member of the queer community (maybe someone non-binary). I’ve seen a number of video essays about how he always tends to pick female leads of color with good intentions and bad circumstances, and I would adore some East asian and west asian representation! Perhaps the next mystery occurring in Bali or Thailand? I also love hearing you gush about this movie! I absolutely adore it, and all it’s stunning details (one I wish you’d mentioned is Ransoms personal characterization with clothing; how all his garments are expensive yet poorly maintained with worn in holes showing how he takes his wealth and privilege for granted)
To keep my commentary respectful I will not talk about the Star Wars film that Rian Johnson directed. However, let's just say that simply thinking about the quality of that Star Wars film makes me sooo much happier at how "Knives Out" and the subsequent "Glass Onion" turned out.
Thank youuuuuuu! This was one of those passion projects of mine that flopped when I released it (it didn’t pick up any traction until Glass Onion came out and I started making videos about that). 😂
Love your video essay. Happily subscribed to you! You want above & beyond! This film felt like a new modern Agatha Christie. & Henry Goulding would be amazing 😻😻😻 He could flirt with Benoit. 😹
I like Glass Onion, but I easily prefer Knives Out more. Setting, climate/time of year, the cast and the fact that they're a family, are some of the reasons why.
I grew up on ms.Marple and Poirot, even did theater for a few years. I can say that Knifes out is not some modern masterpiece, and Ryan Jhonson is not some brilliant film maker. However, Knifes out is a realy good movie, and i love it, and it comes to show that when Ryan is surrounded by a crew and cast that shares his vision and the support to make it, something wonderful can be made by someone who isnt all that special. You dont need to be brilliant or some master film maker to make an amazing and enjoyable movie, you just need a good hearth.
I didnt understand Meg's shirt. Can someone explain? Edit: I now need Henry Golding to star in a Whodunit as a red herring that is more than meets the eye. Thanks for that.
We don't know with absolute certainty that Marta is innocent. The flashbacks are structured to be fallible and contradictory, but as a nurse Marta would know instantly that Harlan hadn't been poisoned by morphine, bc otherwise they wouldn't be able to have that length of conversation. Great Granny Thrombey's evidence will not be admissible in court, and she could easily have confused Marta with Ransom. Ransom does confess, but he confesses initially to a smaller crime, when he agreed in the diner with Marta to work in cahoots with her. If he confesses, she gets everything, and when he gets out on a lesser charge, he will take his cut. Marta outplays him by holding back Fran's death; that nails him for 1st degree murder, which means even if he can get off, he can't profit from Harlan's legacy. That is when he runs at her with a knife. Like, under no circumstances are the actual police ever allowed to straight out say, you can't be guilty, you have a good heart. If Ransom used that in his trial, it would definitely go against the whole investigation, that they allowed a PI to make value judgements like that. The film is amazing, but it is like it still has the structure in place from an earlier draft when Marta was guilty.
Let me tell you something. I dislike crime books, movies, shows, anything really. I don't like whodunit as a genre. I think it's overrated and largely uninteresting because most of the time, the characters really aren't that interesting or likable. But knives out? Holy shit I'm grateful a friend insisted I sit down and watch it with her. This movie is perfect
I think you were too easy on Meg. She acts all progressive and like she is a friend to Marta, but when it becomes inconvenient for her she tells the family about her mother and tries to get Marta to give back the money. She says Marta is like family, but after Marta gets the inheritance, she says it should go to Harlan's "actual family"
Meg isn't good, but the difference between Meg and the other Thrombeys is that (1) Meg knows what "good" looks like, and (2) Meg wants to get to it. This is an incredibly big deal, because what generally makes people irredeemable is that they either have no interest or idea of how to be better people. Ransom *enjoys* that he's doing the wrong thing. Richard and Walt have no idea that they're doing the wrong thing. Joni knows she's doing the wrong thing, but thinks it's for the right reason. But Meg? Meg is ashamed of doing the wrong thing. She still does it, so she is not redeemed. But that shame? It's more than anyone else manages She does not deserve praise or even forgiveness, but she does deserve acknowledgement for being better, even if it's not good enough..

One vote for Doctor Sleep.
I LOVE DOCTOR SLEEP. I was appalled when more people didn’t go see it when it was out in cinemas.
DR. SLEEP. HELL. YES.
I LOVE THAT FILM. More people should have seen it in the cinemas! A masterpiece!
no henry golding but we got jessica henwick :)
I didnt understand Meg's shirt. Can someone explain?
Edit: I now need Henry Golding to star in a Whodunit as a red herring that is more than meets the eye. Thanks for that.
I was confused at first, but upon further inspection it is a vagina 😅
@@saralocks 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 Oh my gosh.
The film is amazing, but it is like it still has the structure in place from an earlier draft when Marta was guilty.
randall park in Benoit Blanc 3
Let me tell you something. I dislike crime books, movies, shows, anything really. I don't like whodunit as a genre. I think it's overrated and largely uninteresting because most of the time, the characters really aren't that interesting or likable. But knives out? Holy shit I'm grateful a friend insisted I sit down and watch it with her. This movie is perfect
I wish I could live in this house, I'm not gonna say I wish it was with ransom butttttttttttttt I kind of want him there so I can pick on him lol
I’m not white so I don’t want to be anywhere near anyone in that family unless it’s Harlan before he died. 🌚👀🙅🏻♀️
@@LadyJenevia I would love to live in that house with marta & harlen
