Steve Alten had a really good book "The Loch" where the monster was a species of prehistoric, giant, oceanic eel. It would enter the Loch to spawn, following the salmon.
I agree it's probably Steve Alten's best but overall I don't think he's that good an author, nevertheless he's the one who got me into reading so I gotta give him credit for that at least
Coincidentally enough, recent tests show there's actually a large subspecies of European eel living in the loch. They were separated during the Ice Age when the loch & near by rivers was created by receding glaciers.
I'm the same way. I remember seeing the "terrier" version of Nessie in a book on Loch Ness, in fact it ended with it. And seeing some the pictures made me think of it when it was shown.
Dragons or fae, I heard a funny idea once that the bored shape shifter would stir up the locals with sightings but when the big explorers would come would turn into a person and watch from the shore, maybe even get in on the photos laughing as they find nothing.
Here's one for you, I remember when they sailed a number of boats fitted with sonar to track Nessie. I can imagine the lot of them lounging on the shore with a picnic lunch and waving to the crews from the shore as they sailed past them. I can also imagine one of them listening to the Police's Synchronicity 2 which references the Loch Ness monster.

It's really funny. I had this idea of doing a short documentary style film about the different interpretations of the monsters of loch ness with stop motion inspired by your amazing work. And low and behold you had already done it.
The first thing I thought of when I saw the critter of the Spicer account at 2:55 was a cowrie, although the proboscis was far too long. Of all the mollusks I've kept over the years, my favorites by far!

That idea has been suggested by a number of people. Apparently, the bedrocks of both Loch Ness and Lake Champlain have big deposits of quartz, which some think has something to do with the monster phenomenon.
I've kept watching some of your videos and I'm also a fan stop motion films. I just wish that live action movies today would just use Stop Motion sequences just like how the late Ray Harryhausen did with his films.
I think the way stop-motion is being made today would certainly be a competitive FX technique. The animation produced by Laika is now so smooth I can't tell it from CGI.

There's a fun book written by Steve Alten "The Loch" which is cannon with his "Meg" series that was made into a movie a few years back. He has a fun way of mixing science with science fiction to make his stories more plausible. I wont spoil the theory he brings up about the monster in the book, but it is one that is not often covered. The Meg world goes down an insane rabbit hole, I recommend it. Also your work is incredible, I cannot get enough of it!
If you haven't seen it, I bet you'd like Incident at Loch Ness. It's a shakey-cam horror movie/pseudo-documentary about Werner Herzog making a movie at Loch Ness about the monster as a social and psychological phenomenon. The monster shows up late but the minimalist effects are quite effective; the bulk of the movie is a prickly satire on filmmaking.

I remember seeing that picture of the dinosaur/ terrier Loch Ness monster at the end of a book about the Loch Ness Monster. I believe the book was called "The Mystery of Loch Ness." I read it when I was a kid, possibly forty years ago. Disney did a short, part animation and part live action which I believe was called "Man, Myth, and Monster" and it was shown originally before Pete's Dragon back in the 70s. What is good about it is it deals more with the myth rather than any sort of proof, and even the monster - voiced by the same actor who did Whinny the Pooh - says he's avoiding scientific proof.
bluworm has that effect. He's majick. Something similar happened to me a couple of years back and I told him in a comment. I think for no reason he popped into my head and I started thinking about his cool videos, then a new video appeared on my subs page after a long absence.

Looking at these early sightings really shows how the 1925 adaptation of The Lost World & King Kong effected the later sightings of the Loch Ness Monster. Especially after the 1934 hoax.
This was extremely well done and would love to see more monster-based documentaries from you! I've also shared this video on as many giant monster-related Facebook groups as I could for more exposure.
Very good, my favorites are at 2:59 and 4:34, I always like the weirder, more unconventional depictions. Multiple people have already brought up "The Loch" but I do like how ol' Stevie didn't take the cliche plesiosaur route. Another thing I find interesting is the giant salamander theory, there's a little blog page on it here: thelochnessgiantsalamander.blogspot.com/ Not that I believe in these cryptids, but the most interesting evidence for me are Robert Rines' sonar studies, which evidently picked up various signatures ranging from 20 to 30 feet in length moving from the bottom of the loch to about halfway. Pretty interesting stuff. I think if there ever were sightings that actually were an animal something like a large sturgeon would be most likely, or maybe a Greenland shark as Jeremy Wade concluded. But yeah cryptids are really interesting stuff, and I think your stop-motion art style could really have a field day with the weirder ones, like trunko or this insane depiction of the bunyip upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/Bunyip_%281935%29.jpg What's your favorite cryptid? Mine's got to be the mothman by a good margin, I think that one just has by far the most interesting story behind the whole thing.
The more you look into a cryptozoological phenomenon, the weirder it gets. Personally, I'm kind of a fan of the invertebrate or giant snail theory. If we are to go by the Dutch DNA analysis of the lake's water, then Nessie ought to be a giant eel. But I don't think it's as simple as that. Loch Ness is obviously a location where people experience phenomena in a number of ways. I'm planning on doing more cryptid animations, in fact, I'm working on a short film concept where the mothman battles the slender man, because why not? :) As for my fave cryptid, I don't have one, but there are many that really interest me, like the mothman, the Jersey devil, Sweden's very own lake monster "Storie", and a bunch of others. I'd love to tackle the bunyip myth. Unfortunately, today in this present climate, that would be considered cultural appropriation. If such wolves start howling, I'll just have to ignore them.

As a fan of your work, and having an interest in cryptozoology myself, I really like the idea of you merging your interests in cryptozoology with your animation skills. I especially liked the dino-terrier and mollusk model-work. I would like to see you eventually tackle other cryptids like the thunderbird, dogman, dab-sog, mothman, and beast of bray road. Or, UFO encounter critters like the Hopkinsville Hobgoblins, if your interests take you there.

With all those descriptions, & suggestions; have you ever heard of the, Lou-Carcolh, of France: your Loch-Ness-Monster's varieties, when combined, add up to the same kind of creature described by the French people. Medieval textx & writings often depict images on their borders, many of which illustrate armored-knights in combat with horse-size-snails; I hope this is enough of a rabbit-hole to be worth your interest.
@@TheLoneAnimator I'd say that the most commonly it has to do with eradicating the devil (sometimes literally as with st Prokopius) or just taming the nature itself...sometimes they are adaptations of pagan stories (Cuchulain/Arthur...not sure about the spelling) or even a Christianisation of a popular genre of heroic tales
Oh yes. We especially have the Great Lake Monster from the north of Sweden. I'm a member of a society that works for its preservation and encourages research about it.

It's very hard to disprove what doesn't exist, that's why BS like this is so insidious, and that's why the burden of proof is ALWAYS on the person making the positive claim. Great work as always. Particularly liked the way you made the final frame of your Highland terrier nessie match the postcard. Just out of curiosity - how long did that little segment take to animate? How often do you animate a segment and then think that it looks all wrong and you start again?
I don't regard the Loch Ness monster as BS at all. I think of it as a phenomena we might never get an explanation for, but we shouldn't discard at least some experiences because of that. We have a similar monster phenomena in a lake in Sweden, and I've talked to people who have seen the creature. Some have been so close they could've touched it had they reached out their arm. Others have been in the company of 20 odd people during observations. The terrier Nessie didn't take very long to animate, a couple of hours, maybe. I'm not a very good animator and I accept that, but sometimes the stuff I do really needs a second take. That happens from time to time, and it often comes out of me pressing the puppet to perform in ways I didn't really build it for.
@@TheLoneAnimator Yeah, anyone who tells you they've seen a lake monster up close is a liar, delusional or hallucinating. Human senses are EXTREMELY fallible and we're also really bad at identifying things, especially at distance. Logs, seals, otters, under water features - all create water occurences that are easy to work up as something more dramatic. It's curious whenever you investigate cryptids that have a lot of sighting all of a sudden, then you realise some book or movie or news piece just came out and hey, wouldn't you know it, the sightings all look exactly like taht thing - even when it was fictitious. Th e fact taht "sightings" have occurred with large numbers of people means NOTHING. Thousands of people witnessed the virgin mary, and UFO attacks. Even the navy, with all their expertise, recently released those ridiculous UFO videos filmed from planes. If the world's experts with all their technology can make such a pathetic error, how much do you trust a bunch of ordinary people? I'm open - even optimistic about the possibility of as-yet unidentified animals - especially at sea, but the chance of large creatures walking around or swimming undiscovered in lakes is so close to zero as to be not worth considering. I was definitely not knocking your animations skills - far from it - I was just curious. Sometimes I animate on the computer and the movement makes sense in my head, but when I do the key frames and test animations it looks awful. I was just thinking how frustrating redos must be with what you do, and how hard it is to do the motion given that you cannot simply say "Start here and end up there". It's always a pleasure to see your work.
@@Martial-Mat The problem is any kind of large, active animal is going to need a ton of energy, and you can't really get that in areas humans don't frequent because all the biological energy is concentrated near where the sun is. Furthermore in the loch you get a whole host of other issues such as the fact that there's been no physical evidence after all this time, you'd need a population, and anything that's a new species would need to be closely related to something that already exists, else you end up with a very implausible phylogenetic gap, though I still think Trey did this subject a disservice with his video on it.
@@neo-filthyfrank1347 Not sure I follow your logic there Frank. Whales are relatively active and exist where humans don't, and why are you assuming an "active" animal? I agree 100% that the lack of evidence in such a relatively small and thoroughly searched area is extremely damning. Also the need for a sustaining population to keep the sightings active over all these centuries. As for such a creature's relationship to other creatures, I don't really understand the point you're making there. Is somebody suggesting that it genetically arose from nowhere?
@@Martial-Mat Well whales still have to surface is the point, and you're right in that they have the entire ocean where's the loch ness monster has only a lake, which makes its existence less likely. But to try to make things more clear, we are generally very good at cataloguing megafauna, as those animals typically have a remarkably clear presence. Discovering bigfoot would be like discovering a new species of bear in the US forests, not likely to put it mildly. It's true that some whales can still be very elusive, like beaked whales, but on the point of genetics they are still beaked whales. When we discover new species today they are always closely related to something we already knew existed, we don't find giant mollusks not related to anything, or giant worms that would have to be their own order, or a completely new kind of whale etc. I'm saying that if anything new were discovered it would have to be closely related to something we're already familiar with, because finding incredibly different and new genetic creatures isn't really something that's happened in the past 80 years. And yes, I was using the energetic quality more to respond to the fact that there is a persistent belief that there still could be megalodons, or plesiosaurs, or any other "action movie star" of an animal still lurking undiscovered. Of course a low-energy organism that happens to be large is much more plausible, and I don't find it unreasonable that there still could be big things down there left to find, like larger colossal squids or a new species of giant squid entirely, or something like a megamouth shark, but these aren't usually what people think of when they think cryptids or "random scary thing lurking undiscovered".

Maybe Nessie is a trickster spirit. It makes sense, if you believe in such things.
Considering how Kelpies are supposed to be shape-shifters it's as good as an explanation as anything.

It seems many of the first observations of Nessie were on land. Oh, the Dino-Scottie hybrid is doubtless one of the most plausible explanations :)

There is much strangeness in the world, but some places are stranger than others.
There's a fun book written by Steve Alten "The Loch" which is cannon with his "Meg" series that was made into a movie a few years back. He has a fun way of mixing science with science fiction to make his stories more plausible. I wont spoil the theory he brings up about the monster in the book, but it is one that is not often covered. The Meg world goes down an insane rabbit hole, I recommend it. Also your work is incredible, I cannot get enough of it!

If you haven't seen it, I bet you'd like Incident at Loch Ness. It's a shakey-cam horror movie/pseudo-documentary about Werner Herzog making a movie at Loch Ness about the monster as a social and psychological phenomenon. The monster shows up late but the minimalist effects are quite effective; the bulk of the movie is a prickly satire on filmmaking.
I have seen Incident At Loch Ness, and I liked it. When the monster appears it looks very credible. It's just a glimpse of something.

I remember seeing that picture of the dinosaur/ terrier Loch Ness monster at the end of a book about the Loch Ness Monster. I believe the book was called "The Mystery of Loch Ness." I read it when I was a kid, possibly forty years ago. Disney did a short, part animation and part live action which I believe was called "Man, Myth, and Monster" and it was shown originally before Pete's Dragon back in the 70s. What is good about it is it deals more with the myth rather than any sort of proof, and even the monster - voiced by the same actor who did Whinny the Pooh - says he's avoiding scientific proof.
I've only seen stills of the animated Disney monster. Didn't know it was connected to Pete's Dragon.

The world is stranger than people would like to accept. Much is real that we cannot understand which makes us uncomfortable in our limitations.
Right! We should let go of the notion that we know everything. In our hubris, we likely miss so many things that would otherwise be revealed to us.
Looking at these early sightings really shows how the 1925 adaptation of The Lost World & King Kong effected the later sightings of the Loch Ness Monster. Especially after the 1934 hoax.
The Brontosaurus in the swamp is a very Nessie-like apparition.
I still believe that 'Nessie' is some kind of mutant slug, able to walk on land efficiently, albeit rarely.
I'm also a fan of the slug theory.

Very good, my favorites are at 2:59 and 4:34, I always like the weirder, more unconventional depictions. Multiple people have already brought up "The Loch" but I do like how ol' Stevie didn't take the cliche plesiosaur route. Another thing I find interesting is the giant salamander theory, there's a little blog page on it here: thelochnessgiantsalamander.blogspot.com/
Not that I believe in these cryptids, but the most interesting evidence for me are Robert Rines' sonar studies, which evidently picked up various signatures ranging from 20 to 30 feet in length moving from the bottom of the loch to about halfway. Pretty interesting stuff. I think if there ever were sightings that actually were an animal something like a large sturgeon would be most likely, or maybe a Greenland shark as Jeremy Wade concluded.

What's your favorite cryptid? Mine's got to be the mothman by a good margin, I think that one just has by far the most interesting story behind the whole thing.
The more you look into a cryptozoological phenomenon, the weirder it gets. Personally, I'm kind of a fan of the invertebrate or giant snail theory. If we are to go by the Dutch DNA analysis of the lake's water, then Nessie ought to be a giant eel. But I don't think it's as simple as that. Loch Ness is obviously a location where people experience phenomena in a number of ways. I'm planning on doing more cryptid animations, in fact, I'm working on a short film concept where the mothman battles the slender man, because why not? :) As for my fave cryptid, I don't have one, but there are many that really interest me, like the mothman, the Jersey devil, Sweden's very own lake monster "Storie", and a bunch of others. I'd love to tackle the bunyip myth. Unfortunately, today in this present climate, that would be considered cultural appropriation. If such wolves start howling, I'll just have to ignore them.

As a fan of your work, and having an interest in cryptozoology myself, I really like the idea of you merging your interests in cryptozoology with your animation skills. I especially liked the dino-terrier and mollusk model-work. I would like to see you eventually tackle other cryptids like the thunderbird, dogman, dab-sog, mothman, and beast of bray road. Or, UFO encounter critters like the Hopkinsville Hobgoblins, if your interests take you there.

With all those descriptions, & suggestions; have you ever heard of the, Lou-Carcolh, of France: your Loch-Ness-Monster's varieties, when combined, add up to the same kind of creature described by the French people. Medieval textx & writings often depict images on their borders, many of which illustrate armored-knights in combat with horse-size-snails; I hope this is enough of a rabbit-hole to be worth your interest.

Monsters are often represented as something pagan, so they're a perfect foil for any would-be christian hero.
@@TheLoneAnimator I'd say that the most commonly it has to do with eradicating the devil (sometimes literally as with st Prokopius) or just taming the nature itself...sometimes they are adaptations of pagan stories (Cuchulain/Arthur...not sure about the spelling) or even a Christianisation of a popular genre of heroic tales

It's very hard to disprove what doesn't exist, that's why BS like this is so insidious, and that's why the burden of proof is ALWAYS on the person making the positive claim.
Great work as always. Particularly liked the way you made the final frame of your Highland terrier nessie match the postcard. Just out of curiosity - how long did that little segment take to animate? How often do you animate a segment and then think that it looks all wrong and you start again?
I don't regard the Loch Ness monster as BS at all. I think of it as a phenomena we might never get an explanation for, but we shouldn't discard at least some experiences because of that. We have a similar monster phenomena in a lake in Sweden, and I've talked to people who have seen the creature. Some have been so close they could've touched it had they reached out their arm. Others have been in the company of 20 odd people during observations.
The terrier Nessie didn't take very long to animate, a couple of hours, maybe. I'm not a very good animator and I accept that, but sometimes the stuff I do really needs a second take. That happens from time to time, and it often comes out of me pressing the puppet to perform in ways I didn't really build it for.
@@TheLoneAnimator Yeah, anyone who tells you they've seen a lake monster up close is a liar, delusional or hallucinating. Human senses are EXTREMELY fallible and we're also really bad at identifying things, especially at distance. Logs, seals, otters, under water features - all create water occurences that are easy to work up as something more dramatic.
It's curious whenever you investigate cryptids that have a lot of sighting all of a sudden, then you realise some book or movie or news piece just came out and hey, wouldn't you know it, the sightings all look exactly like taht thing - even when it was fictitious.
Th e fact taht "sightings" have occurred with large numbers of people means NOTHING. Thousands of people witnessed the virgin mary, and UFO attacks. Even the navy, with all their expertise, recently released those ridiculous UFO videos filmed from planes. If the world's experts with all their technology can make such a pathetic error, how much do you trust a bunch of ordinary people?
I'm open - even optimistic about the possibility of as-yet unidentified animals - especially at sea, but the chance of large creatures walking around or swimming undiscovered in lakes is so close to zero as to be not worth considering.
I was definitely not knocking your animations skills - far from it - I was just curious. Sometimes I animate on the computer and the movement makes sense in my head, but when I do the key frames and test animations it looks awful. I was just thinking how frustrating redos must be with what you do, and how hard it is to do the motion given that you cannot simply say "Start here and end up there".

@@Martial-Mat The problem is any kind of large, active animal is going to need a ton of energy, and you can't really get that in areas humans don't frequent because all the biological energy is concentrated near where the sun is. Furthermore in the loch you get a whole host of other issues such as the fact that there's been no physical evidence after all this time, you'd need a population, and anything that's a new species would need to be closely related to something that already exists, else you end up with a very implausible phylogenetic gap, though I still think Trey did this subject a disservice with his video on it.

I agree 100% that the lack of evidence in such a relatively small and thoroughly searched area is extremely damning. Also the need for a sustaining population to keep the sightings active over all these centuries. As for such a creature's relationship to other creatures, I don't really understand the point you're making there. Is somebody suggesting that it genetically arose from nowhere?
@@Martial-Mat Well whales still have to surface is the point, and you're right in that they have the entire ocean where's the loch ness monster has only a lake, which makes its existence less likely.
But to try to make things more clear, we are generally very good at cataloguing megafauna, as those animals typically have a remarkably clear presence. Discovering bigfoot would be like discovering a new species of bear in the US forests, not likely to put it mildly.
It's true that some whales can still be very elusive, like beaked whales, but on the point of genetics they are still beaked whales. When we discover new species today they are always closely related to something we already knew existed, we don't find giant mollusks not related to anything, or giant worms that would have to be their own order, or a completely new kind of whale etc.
I'm saying that if anything new were discovered it would have to be closely related to something we're already familiar with, because finding incredibly different and new genetic creatures isn't really something that's happened in the past 80 years.
And yes, I was using the energetic quality more to respond to the fact that there is a persistent belief that there still could be megalodons, or plesiosaurs, or any other "action movie star" of an animal still lurking undiscovered.
Of course a low-energy organism that happens to be large is much more plausible, and I don't find it unreasonable that there still could be big things down there left to find, like larger colossal squids or a new species of giant squid entirely, or something like a megamouth shark, but these aren't usually what people think of when they think cryptids or "random scary thing lurking undiscovered".
