In 1963 the Beatles performed at the Royal Variety Charity Show (QEII couldn't make it; in her place The Queen Mum and Princess Margaret) and coming out to perform, John Lennon announced:
"The people in the cheaper seats, clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you'd just rattle your jewelry."

I met Tracey in Washington State, back in 1988. She was filming the movie I love you to death. She was sporting a black lace tutu and drinking an Orange Julius. She was so kind and funny kept asking about my accent because she said I didn't have one. She was a joy to met and a pleasure to talk to.

I did not think that movie was a very good vehicle for her talent. I already adored her from her TV show and kept VHS versions for years. Joan Plowright was fantastic.

And another, alleged, conversation between her and a guest at a Buckingham Palace 'do' went something like, " And how is your sister? " To which Margaret responded, " Oh she's fine, you know, she's still Queen ". Apparently the guest couldn't quite place Margaret but knew she had a famous sibling and by asking after the sibling would prompt her to remember who Margaret was.

I recall hearing that when Elizabeth Taylor met Princess Margaret, the actress was wearing some fabulously expensive and dazzling necklace that Burton had given her. Princess Margaret inspected it and sniffed, 'It's rather vulgar, don't you think?' La Liz handed it to her and said 'Please try it on. I insist.' HRH did just that, and as she was admiring herself in a mirror, Liz snarked 'Not so vulgar now, is it!' 😂😂😂

The Queen's late paternal grandmother, Queen Mary, was especially the dread of many a hostess. Husbands would often warn their wives to hide the good stuff just in case the Queen Consort took a shining to something that she coveted. Oftentimes, a palace footman would show up hours later after a royal visit to collect a valuable trinket or two to add to Queen Mary's collection!

In 2014 I met a woman in her 90's who, as a young teenager in England during the war, was the youngest member of a MENSA type group and won an award; she was part of a group of young people who met the Royal Family. She and Margaret hit it off. A few wks later Margaret spotted her out walking. She got her driver to stop the car, and asked, "Do you know how to drive a car?" She claims she, aged 14, and Margaret, also 14, were subsequently allowed to drive around London "incognito" (with security people following, of course) collecting wounded and taking them to hospital. She told me Margaret was "great fun with a sharp wit".

Just finished watching the Graham Norton Show, Olivia Coleman and Helena Bonham Carter were two of the guests talking about their roles as Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret in season 3 of The Crown, begining next week. Another guest was Anne, Lady Glenconner who was Lady In Waiting to Princess Margaret for over 30 years and who was promoting her newly published book.. She doesn't say too much about the late princess, though she recounts how Margaret came to own a house on the island of Mustique which the Glenconners owned. What Lady Glenconner does state is how 'annoyed' she is by the relaying of 'juicy gossip' of Margaret by people who'd never met her. I did meet HRH once when I was in respite care at the London Lighthouse. She didn't publicise that she would be visiting, unlike Diana. But she'd quietly slip in, chat with patients, laugh and joke with them and comfort them in her own way. She wasn't the 'touchy, feely ' type as Diana was. Lady Glenconner's 2nd son died as a result of AIDS and when all their friends were making excuses to not visit them on Mustique Princess Margaret was there taking great care of the Glenconners and not shying away from the son just because he'd got a 'deadly virus'. Whatever the princess's foibles and quirks she was first and foremost a human being who likely didn't deserve much of the crap that was printed about her.

Cremated because she insisted on being buried in her parents' vault in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle and there simply wasn't room for her any other way. In fact, her headstone within that chapel simply leans against the wall. It's actually rather moving to see that, beyond all the HRH, she simply wanted to be with her parents.

Nobody invited her, she would send her equerry to "inquire" about a royal visit, and (assuming you didn't say fuggedabadit) he would give you a list of rules: tune the piano, import young men who can sing/dance, get a recording of Scotland the Brave by the Highland Pipers, provide plenty of gin, keep the kids out of sight, get rid of the cats, have lots of raspberry jam sandwiches for tea (and since HRH doesn't like seeds between her teeth, purchase imported jam) and have barley water in the washroom for her to wash her face with.
