  • Delhi based artist Asim Waqif introduces us to वेणु [Venu], his striking bamboo installation on our Hayward Gallery Terrace.
The third Bagri Foundation commission to appear at the Southbank Centre, वेणु [Venu] is a swirling, sprawling natural bamboo structure, wrapped around the industrial metal skeleton which holds it against the concrete of our brutalist Hayward Gallery. It embodies Waqif’s keenness ‘to try and bring together things that are apparently very disparate or polarised.’
As he explains in the video Waqif is not a fan of art being kept behind velvet ropes, and encourages use of all senses in experiencing his work. वेणु [Venu] should not just be touched, but also played; bamboo musical instruments are presented in and around the structure, encouraging spontaneous moments of creativity.
वेणु [Venu] can be experienced in person at the Southbank Centre until 22 October 2023.

Complexity masquerading as creativity. I don’t like that. It reminds me of what I don’t like about historical Indian design - I see the same fundamental flaw.
