Aha, you are here! I just referred to you above. Reposting here again so it is easier for you. I welcome your input: "Hi Ian, I live near Sherbrooke Quebec where we do not really have a dearth and am thinking of doing this next weekend with about half a dozen virgin queens that will be ready. Do you think it might work given they are virgins and also that I do not have a second yard I can move them to and can only beekeep on weekends? (At a stretch, I could do this on a Friday evening and put a mesh grill on the entrance to the hive (with syrup and water) for the two or three nights that the Man at Faith Apiaries suggests.)". @@hildebrandtrius The shim in half inch. I know because I build Ian's lids and pallets. Sequestering the bees for TWO nights will work BUT, you need to keep them cool. They will overheat and die very easily in summer weather.
@@ThatBeeMan Thank you. You and he never really said you made them for him but it was obvious (as a fellow wood worker) to me. Hence my question. Thank you for your quick responses. I had not thought of the cooling aspect.
Ian Steve here from Lockport. You should consider doing a video on how you build your lids and your bottoms. I think you would say the beekeepers a lot of money that they can put back into their businesses. Just A Thought.
thought about doing splits like that but I'm soon to be 68 and doing everything by hand Lol. I really don't need more bees but I've been offered more spots to put bees.
Do you find issues with skunks, or racoons or possums having the hives so low? I'm just wondering because we have a lot of these animals where I am located and originally I had a hive on a pallet but got nervous because of the wildlife so I lifted that hive up as well
Hello. Sorry, I'm a newbie. But what is that thing that you hit with the lever at 0:21? Is it a queen excluder? Why does it have horizontal holes and a space in the center?
Hello. Thank you very much for answering. Is this escape board placed after the honey supers are full or when they are not yet full? How do nurse bees, queen bees, drones and foraging bees behave with that board? ?. What type of these bees come down to the nest or is there any risk that any of these could go up?

Moving them to another yard would definitely help, you will loose some bee population to drift if setting them in the same yard. The virgins will work if you have time . Count your days, you need 2 rounds of brood
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Thank you, I need to get started ASAP. I am thinking of putting in a brood frame or two if I can spare them to accelerate things and anchor them to the hive.
Those bulk splits are genius!

Would you not be better to remove the lower box with the queen and brood and allowing the new colony to get the returning foragers to boost them?

Are those Carrie's grafted queens? That last rain must have helped with your late flow. Honey Money. LOL
No, Its too late in the season to make more queens. The queens they are placing are Northstar, we will see how they do.

My northern stars are only coming in on Monday hopefully it's not to late for bulk bee splits. 🤞🏻
Excellent explanations. Could you explain the details about make the escape boards (measurements of cones or things like that)? Thank you

Its an escape board, to remove bees from the honey supers.

Do you guys get a golden rod flow?
Mild
No brood at all in the splits? Interesting. Have you done this successfully in the past?
Works very well if enough bees go with the split
Time stamp 5:23, I can relate to holy gloves such as those. Lol

Ian I know you pull multiple boxes but how many pulls are you ending up having to do per colony .
he is usualy doing two

Maybe 2 weeks
