Best not to harvest your Asparagus for a couple of years for the plants to establish. Very feathery stalks about 4foot tall. I have found they do best if they are supported within canes and twine. Delicious, worth the wait.
Sean, the hedge will look very nice but it will grow to about 5 to 6ft wide which will take up quite a bit of space
Loving all your plans Sean.. The pathway being defined makes a lot of difference .Hope the weather isn't too cold for you , freezing here !
Your hedgerow sounds like it will be beautiful! and, yes, the wood defining your garden beds really helps put your plan into perspective. That bird is definitely a predator... 😀, sounds like a hawk , maybe he is checking out the vole population?
Gorgeous buzzard....🦅❤
That's more of a wildlife field hedgerow than a small garden windbreak? Hazels alone are kinda triffids which is why they were suitable to coppice.
So glad the moles will be dealt with naturally!
Buzzard Sean - beautiful sight almost wiped out in 50s thanks to DDT
I remember DDT use in those days....big poison...
Oh I see buzzards under the motorway bridge when I'm coming home in early mornings, never knew what they were until somebody told me.i never even knew uk had buzzards.when they are sat on the fence watching cars pass them it is amazing to see such a large bird.could do with one in my back garden because I saw a rat going into one of my sheds.
I often see buzzards in Somerset and now on perches on the side of roads. Never see kestrels on the roadside anymore.
Thanks again Sean I've started my seeds onions and cabbages and peppers and I am feeling better gardening feeds the body and the soul
You've accomplished so much in a year Sean, well done and best of luck with the spring and summer growth 🌻🌷
Sean, at least the moles are turning the soil over for you, saves you digging lol. By the way absolutely love asparagus. I will be interested to see how it goes x
Have you thought about ever baring strawberries . They keep going till the first frost.last year we had strawberries till the middle of November
Just ordered a few.
The hedgerow sounds lovely, cannot wait to see it grow. I can picture now how you are planning your homestead. The idea of the boards to separate areas is a good one as you have a lot of space to cover xx
Just love to come along with the planning. We have had moles, and it seems their underground pathways become highways for voles at least here in Virginia in the states. The voles eat the roots of almost anything. so we make a real effort to get rid of moles usually by trapping at obvious openings. Not easy to catch them and their tunnels tend to disrupt the root systems, especially of annuals, which are short. Yes they detest daffodils, so we have lots. Much good luck with everything. 😊
Sean the gate and pathway is very nice and will look beautiful when finished.
The garden it coming along as the shape is more defined.
Loved seeing the buzzard in the sky.
Have a lovely evening my friend. It’s very cold here too in Northern California.
Your homestead is starting to look good now Sean.
Yes that is a buzzard.. its the call they make.
Hedgerow is a great thing for nature, animals like hedgehogs and birds but you should consider how wide and the shadow cast. a natural hedge will be 1m wide or more and 2m high...and then casts a shadow of 3m. maybe consider your point of view??? Freshly planted asparagus is harvested for the first time in the 3rd year but each year only until St. John's Day, 24th June...then you let it grow. The green parts grow up to 1.2m high and bushy, later they have red berries. In late winter you remove the dead parts and add compost. Asparagus likes loose, sandy soil... you should mix sand into the soil and the vine has to grow high above the asparagus otherwise it will get too much shade from the vine. I would let grapes grow long on the shed or garden house, then you have a shady spot underneath in the summer and the water barrel next to it with a solar pump, very relaxing.
The hedge idea is great, the birds will love it once it grown, the plot coming along really nicely now. Wow the bird of prey was amazing, love seeing wild animals
Looks great x you are doing well that hedge is fabulous ,asparagus plant looks like locks x coming on lovely
Your garden is starting to come together. Really enjoy your videos.
Think thats a Buzzard! Red kites have more forked bit longer tail ....n wings more graceful looking!
In the summer you will spot buzzards following thermals in upward spirals with wings held out..n when they spot carrion they drop at high speed ,over quite a distance, in straight line at approx 45° which can look spectacular.n when any chicks fledge can watch parents teaching them t hunt etc younger birds can be a bit clumsy... Coz their markings can vary quite a bit you can get t know indevidual birds more easily than some other species!
Why not have some binoculars in summerhouse or shed?( charity shop finds?). f those cuppa tea moments sat outside in better weather?
Binoculars are a great idea!
Definitely a buzzard. It has quite a chunky outline and the right call.
Your beautiful gate reminds me of the film “The Optimists”. Peter Sellers plays a dignified former music hall artist who has fallen on hard times. He lives in a rundown goods yard beside a derelict canal. There are no walls around it, only two tall pillars and a gate between them. Peter always enters and exits through the gate.
1 was just thinking a little bowl and jug in to good to waste to wash your hands in warm water from the kettle put in summer house 😊 I think maybe the Walton had one
The hedgerow sounds lovely and the birds will enjoy the fruits. Excellent plans as it takes time to properly get the feel of it. Good idea to only put things down temporary until it's right. I think I shall have to follow that good advice instead of just plonking things about and then needing to move it. Get's me in trouble! 😂
Everything is coming together so nicely 😊
I was replaying an old video from the Rusty allotment when you had that black composter with the built in thermometer in the top. It was styrofoam like? I was wondering what your opinion of that type was.
Have a good week 😊
Am thinking of getting one for this site in the summer.
@ Ok great. Thanks. I’ll keep that on my list and see what you get up to too
We have loads red kite here sw scotland good ldea some bushes for wind brakers got hawthorn bush in back garden birds eat the berries this time of year.
I don't know about wales, but privet is considered invasive in the US. It can be lovely. Maybe it's just the variety. Can it wait to see the hedge in a couple of years.
Save a space for a couple of chickens
Leek and potato soup, ideal for a cold day.
Hi Sean, I think I saw a cat on your live stream of the Homestead in the middle of the night. I saw its eyes reflecting the light.
😺
@seanjamescameron
Yes, it looked exactly like that😅🐈🐱🐈⬛😅
Learned something new today thank you
It's a Buzzard Red Kites that are moving into you area have a forked tail....
😂 i don't want four toasters!.....reminds me of the two Ronnie's sketch four candles 🤣
Take care Sean 💜
I love the cry/ call of a Buzzard. ❤
Used "look up" on iphone. The bird maybe a Corvus, a type of large crow, with long wings and diamond shaped tail. "Look up" can also be used to ID plants. On the subject of grapes, be very selective, maybe some recommendations from your viewers?
I am growing pine berries. They are ok.
From what I learned Buzzards glide, hawks hover :)
Coming along nicely sean
I love Hawthorn. They're my favourite. Pretty in the spring, and sooo resilient, twisting and bending into strange shapes. A couple of months ago I put a Midland Hawthorn as the centrepiece for my front garden. They have pretty pink flowers rather than white.
Homestead is looking good with all your layout. Laughed about the moles leaving holes everywhere. 😅
Will look forward to seeing how your hedge grows 😊
Buzzard, beautiful bird
You could have your own small pagan stone circle if there was room
Hi Sean, it’s a Buzzard. I’ve heard them calling on the live stream so they may be thinking of nesting in the forest as it’s nearly the birds wedding day (old country saying). We hear a lot of birds on the live stream but rarely see any ☹️
They have been in the mountains here for decades.
Beautiful Buzzard.
Pretty sure that’s a buzzard Sean ❤
Looks wonderful Sean, are you going to make walk paths every so many feet into your garden beds? Looking forward to the hedge plants leafing out this spring. ❤
That’s a buzzard 👍
Looked like a Common Buzzard Sean.
It's great to see your process in work! I am excited to see everything fall into place and enjoy watching the 24/7 live stream, especially when you are having a potch.
Everything is coming along great sean ❤
Great to see you today Sean, garden coming along well.🐞
A scarecrow would be nice to make the livestream more colorful and interesting. It could also feature in the vlog, and scare the moles away 😂
What a beautiful Hawk landing in the trees. Where I live Hawks nest on the tall skyscraper buildings in Manhattan. I live in Brooklyn. It's an amazing sight too, but not as pretty as them in the trees and the mountains.😊
Morning Sean nice the hedge for the birds en bees gr ire
I can see the vision and can't wait to see it take shape. Will you plant currants?
Red, white and black.
The hedgerow sounds really lovely! And definitely a buzzard 😊
nice video sean
What is difference berween an allotment and a homestead?
Homestead has livestock which this one will in a few years. Chickens mostly.
@seanjamescameron thanks
Your plan looks lovely enjoy watching your dreams come to fruition...pun intended.
Always tell by the scream
The metal cabinet in the summerhouse looks like a good place to store tools. The fruit trees might cut down on some of the wind coming off of the waterside. I liked the overview of all of the space. Really coming together. Maybe set a goal of putting in 1 window every other day.
I think the alignment is going to look beautiful in the Spring and summer. I can't wait to see it. Looking forward to it.😊
Sean, can we get a grocery haul soon, please? Thanks.
Will do.
@seanjamescameron Whoohoo!! Thanks!!
Exciting to see the homestead evolve.
Sean, soon you will be having some strawberry shortcake! That is one of my favorite spring/summer desserts. The plants look good, and hopefully you can get them in the ground before any bad weather. Stay warm! ❤
Homestead is looking great!
What is under that glass bell dome near the leaks?
Nothing at the moment.
You missed an opportunity for a good toaster harvest. Bird of prey was a buzzard judging by the sound it made.
Did you find out what metal was being blown around Sean?
Probably not due to the weather.
Yes I show it in this video.
Looks like a Buzzard ?
Great! ❤
Looking great Sean and thank you for setting up the livestream . I think it’s lovely that the moles are making your seed sowing soil for you 😊 . Maybe try and get some dried mealworms for the birds ..the robins will love them.
You’re winning Sean. 👍👍
Definitely a buzzard
Buzzard me thinks 😊
Buzzard😀
Love the timber mapping! It’s going to look great! X
Ahh, I see you did.
Looked like a buzzard to me. Most hawks are smaller than it looked
It might be a peregrine falcon.
It's a buzzard Sean .
Perhaps you could exchange your four toasters for.........four candles ?......or some fork handles ? 😂
That was a buzzard, most definitely.
Hi Sean, I think that hedgerow will look fab, I can see it in my minds eye now. Glad you got your parcel sorted, luckily you opened it straight away!
I spotted in our garden a first sign of Spring, yellow Crocuses just starting to appear. 🙂 And a local cafe round the corner from us posted on Instagram Snowdrops! The Daffs will soon be out Sean, when they appear I'll send you a photo.
Take care and catch up soon.
🌷
Buzzard
The Homestead is really coming along Sean 👍
I'm currently pretty much bedbound because of a wonky knee so I'm watching your videos from the beginning of your moving back to Wales I've reached No45. Hopefully by the time I've caught up to present day recordings I'll be back on my feet 😬
Only another 100 plus to go! Get well soon.
It's a buzzard
Definitely a buzzard.
It’s a hawk
It sounds like a buzzard
Your hedge will be lovely, separating you from the neighbour. We won't see all his junk then. That bird was a hawk.
It's a hawk
The garden will soon be quite an oasis. 🙂👍🇨🇦
Have you had post from your PO Box? We sent something earlier this week.
Yes but there was no note so no idea from who. A bottle?
This was a small piece of art for the homestead @seanjamescameron
@@TraceyCsrdiff1971 Not yet.
Oh dear, it was sent on 4 February.@seanjamescameron
Great progress
The fly over appears to be a hawk. It might be a red tail but not sure.
Sounds like a red kite
