  • I've had a handful of people ask me about my hand technique and practice regimen so I figured I would just record a full practice session from absolutely cold to fully warmed up to show how my technique changes through tempo changes.
    0:00 200 BPM
200 is currently on the edge of being a very comfortable "infinite" speed for me, so it's where my warmup starts. I try to focus on long double bass runs with singles as well as trying to keep my hands going with 8ths or 16ths for at least 2 minutes. Near the middle I switch to quint/triplet bursts to try and warm up my hands faster.
    4:03 220 BPM
At 220 I try to do at least one or two long runs of double bass with singles and try to keep my hands going with 8ths or 16ths just like 200. I will occasionally try to do the quint/triplets at this speed as well, but it's nowhere near as "comfortable" as it is at 200 bpm.
    7:49 240 BPM
At 240 I start to focus on hands much more than feet because ~240 is where singles start becoming a pain to play for longer runs, but I do still try to play at least one or two thirty second runs. Most of the practice from here until ~300 will be hands focused by trying to play very long stamina runs.
    11:03 278 BPM
This particular song that I chose to put in the playlist starts at 139 and then switches to 130 after about 1.5 minutes. This might not seem like a great idea but the giant 38 bpm jump does help me get warmed up faster while also making the upcoming 260 segment slightly easier. The focus here remains the same - primarily hands.
    12:40 260 BPM
After the change from 278 down to 260 I try to play very long stamina runs on my hands while also trying to play the occasional ~15 second double bass runs. I also start incorporating heel toe at this point.
    16:50 280 BPM
Here I basically do the same thing that I do with 260-278 but I also start playing longer triplet double bass runs to help with coordination practice.
    22:16 300 BPM
This song switches between 150, 157 and 162 bpm. The focus here is still hands but the stamina runs now start getting shorter. I still try to play 8 or so measures of 8th notes with my left hand a few times, but my right hand isn't quite up to this speed yet. This means that I still "try" to play a couple of measures of 8th notes straight with my right hand but I hold back a little bit so I don't hurt myself. 16th double bass singles are now gone and I instead try to play triplet double bass runs throughout the 157 and 162 sections.
    26:05 320 BPM
I do essentially the same thing here as I do for the 300 bpm segment but the stamina here is very hit or miss depending on the day. I try to play 8 measures of 8th notes with my left hand a few times but sometimes it's more like 6 or 7 measures before it falls apart. Longer triplet double bass runs come even more to the forefront here since they're now the equivalent of 240 bpm. This means I get to practice the coordination of triplets while also helping with speed.
    30:35 340 BPM
Stamina runs here start to get very very hit or miss so I will attempt to play 2 or 3 measure runs throughout the song depending on how my left hand is feeling. Again, triplet double bass is a big part of this speed although this is where it starts to get difficult. Still possible, but difficult.
    34:59 360-370 BPM
These 2 speeds serve essentially the same purpose. I try to play 1 measure straight of 8th notes with my left hand, but at this point my technique starts failing a little bit. This is the in between area where my hands can still "understand" what they're doing but the stamina definitely isn't there yet. Triplet double bass starts getting very difficult here which means heel toe takes precedent again. Triplet 8ths on my hands also start being utilized here for coordination practice.
    42:34 380-400 BPM
This is the point of no return hell section where i'm basically throwing my hands at the kit to try and eventually get my technique to work. This segment is never pretty and I can typically only play 1 measure of clean 8th notes a couple of times, no consistency to speak of yet. Triplets on hands take more of the focus here since they're also very fast at these speeds. I wouldn't recommend playing these types of speeds that you REALLY can't play unless you're very careful not to hurt yourself. Don't force it.

you may call this is a 'low effort' video but there's an obvious large amount of effort put into practicing consistently and efficiently. 1 hour of focused practice with no breaks/noodling/distraction is more 'effort' than most people can even handle. not to mention this straddles the line between practice and an impressive performance to me. absolutely nutty all around, it's no wonder you're as good as you are

I'm playing to random rap songs but I didn't include them so the video doesn't get blocked
